RESUMO

Calcium channel blockers are currently widely used to treat many cardiological alterations; however, overdose and poisoning have been associated with morbidity and mortality mainly in those patients with suicidal attempts. We report a case and review the pathophysiology of overdose, treatment, and prognosis.

RESUMO

We propose an efficient method to suppress inferior wall attenuation in 201TI 180 degrees myocardial tomography. We systematically performed redistribution studies in both supine and prone decubitus, assuming that the latter should result in shifting with respect to each other's cardiac structures and diaphragm as well as subphrenic organs possibly responsible for attenuation. The comparison of both studies in 25 normal subjects by visual interpretation and circumferential profiles analysis showed a complete suppression of significant attenuation in the inferior wall in prone studies. In addition and consequently, the standard deviation of activity in this area was markedly reduced and became close to its value in anterior and lateral walls. This simple technique now routinely performed in over 400 patients drastically improves specificity in the evaluation of inferior wall abnormalities by suppressing attenuation artifacts and, incidently, the effect of high individual variability in left phrenic and subphrenic anatomic configuration.

RESUMO

Habituation of the orienting response (OR) was used to assess possible attentional deficits associated with infantile malnutrition. The procedure involved the presentation of 40 trials of a pure tone stimulus to 8 marginally nourished and 8 malnourished 13 1/2-month-old male infants. The results showed that the initial OR to stimulus onset, as measured by the magnitude of cardiac deceleration, was significantly larger in marginally nourished than in malnourished infants. Within-group comparisons revealed that marginally nourished infants showed significant increases in OR magnitude to changes in tonal frequency whereas the malnourished infants did not. The results were taken as evidence of an attentional deficit associated with infantile malnutrition that is likely to interfere with subsequent learning.
