RESUMO

Moiré superlattices of two-dimensional heterostructures arose as a new platform to investigate emergent behaviour in quantum solids with unprecedented tunability. To glean insights into the physics of these systems, it is paramount to discover new probes of the moiré potential and moiré minibands, as well as their dependence on external tuning parameters. Hydrostatic pressure is a powerful control parameter, since it allows to continuously and reversibly enhance the moiré potential. Here we use high pressure to tune the minibands in a rotationally aligned MoS2/WSe2 moiré heterostructure, and show that their evolution can be probed via moiré phonons. The latter are Raman-inactive phonons from the individual layers that are activated by the moiré potential. Moiré phonons manifest themselves as satellite Raman peaks arising exclusively from the heterostructure region, increasing in intensity and frequency under applied pressure. Further theoretical analysis reveals that their scattering rate is directly connected to the moiré potential strength. By comparing the experimental and calculated pressure-induced enhancement, we obtain numerical estimates for the moiré potential amplitude and its pressure dependence. The present work establishes moiré phonons as a sensitive probe of the moiré potential as well as the electronic structures of moiré systems.

RESUMO

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess spin-valley locking and spin-split K/K' valleys, which have led to many fascinating physical phenomena. However, the electronic structure of TMDs also exhibits other conduction band minima with similar properties, the Q/Q' valleys. The intervalley K-Q scattering enables interesting physical phenomena, including multivalley superconductivity, but those effects are typically hindered in monolayer TMDs due to the large K-Q energy difference (ΔEKQ). To unlock elusive multivalley phenomena in monolayer TMDs, it is desirable to reduce ΔEKQ, while being able to sensitively probe the valley shifts and the multivalley scattering processes. Here, we use high pressure to tune the electronic properties of monolayer MoS2 and WSe2 and probe K-Q crossing and multivalley scattering via double-resonance Raman (DRR) scattering. In both systems, we observed a pressure-induced enhancement of the double-resonance LA and 2LA Raman bands, which can be attributed to a band gap opening and ΔEKQ decrease. First-principles calculations and photoluminescence measurements corroborate this scenario. In our analysis, we also addressed the multivalley nature of the DRR bands for WSe2. Our work establishes the DRR 2LA and LA bands as sensitive probes of strain-induced modifications to the electronic structure of TMDs. Conversely, their intensity could potentially be used to monitor the presence of compressive or tensile strain in TMDs. Furthermore, the ability to probe K-K' and K-Q scattering as a function of strain shall advance our understanding of different multivalley phenomena in TMDs such as superconductivity, valley coherence, and valley transport.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effective dosage of the combination tiletamine-zolazepam-ketamine-xylazine (TKX), with or without methadone, in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, experimental study. ANIMALS: A total of 29 dogs. METHODS: Dogs were randomly administered TKX (group TKX, n = 13) or combined with 0.3 mg kg-1 of methadone (group TKXM, n = 16) intramuscularly. The TKX solution contained tiletamine (50 mg mL-1), zolazepam (50 mg mL-1), ketamine (80 mg mL-1) and xylazine (20 mg mL-1). The effective dosages for immobility in 50% and 95% of the population (ED50 and ED95) were estimated using the up-and-down method. Approximately 20 minutes after drug administration, a skin incision was performed and the response was judged as positive or negative if the dogs moved or did not move, respectively. The TKX volume for the subsequent dog in the same group was increased or decreased by 0.005 mL kg-1 if the response of the previous dog was positive or negative, respectively. Heart and respiratory rates, and sedation/anesthesia scores (range 0-21) were recorded before and 15 minutes after drug administration. RESULTS: Estimated ED50 and ED95 (95% confidence intervals) were: TKX, 0.025 (0.020-0.029) and 0.026 (0.010-0.042) mL kg-1; TKXM, 0.022 (0.018-0.025) and 0.033 (0.017-0.049) mL kg-1. Median (interquartile range) scores for sedation/anesthesia were 17 (16-18) and 17 (15-20), and times until lateral recumbency were 5 (4-6) and 6 (4-10) minutes in TKX and TKXM, respectively (p > 0.05). In both groups heart and respiratory rates decreased, but values remained acceptable for anesthetized dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results provide a guide for volumes of TKX and TKXM in dogs requiring restraint for minimally invasive procedures. Inclusion of methadone in the TKX combination did not influence ED50.

RESUMO

Isolated linear carbon chains (LCCs) encapsulated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes are studied under hydrostatic pressure (P) via resonance Raman scattering. The LCCs' spectroscopic signature C band around 1850 cm^{-1} softens linearly with increasing P. A simple anharmonic force-constant model not only describes such softening but also shows that the LCCs' Young's modulus (E), Grüneisen parameter (γ), and strain (ϵ) follow universal P^{-1} and P^{2} laws, respectively. In particular, γ also presents a unified behavior for all LCCs. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results reported on such isolated systems and the first work to explore universal P-dependent responses for LCCs' E, ϵ, and γ.

RESUMO

The aim of this report is to describe general and methodological characteristics of a cohort study in southern Brazil (Coorte Brasil Sul), aimed at understanding the impact of the first 1,000 days of life on children's health. It is a cohort study involving all children born in 2009 and their families living in the municipality of Palhoça, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Face-to-face interviews with parents at home using a structured questionnaire and children's physical and clinical examinations at schools have been carried out. Cross-sectional analyzes, longitudinal comparisons and hierarquical regression analysis will allow understanding if the first 1,000 days of life can influence on 6-year-old children's health. The Coorte Brasil Sul is in its retrospective phase together with the children's physical data collection. Preliminary data (n=1270) related to nutritional status point to a high prevalence of overweight (16.4%) and obesity (15.5%). With the continuity of the study, it is expected to evaluate if the first phases of life can influence health during adolescence and in adult life, mainly in relation to chronic diseases.

RESUMO

In this paper we explore the direct transfer via lamination of chemical vapor deposition graphene onto different flexible substrates. The transfer method investigated here is fast, simple, and does not require an intermediate transfer membrane, such as polymethylmethacrylate, which needs to be removed afterward. Various substrates of general interest in research and industry were studied in this work, including polytetrafluoroethylene filter membranes, PVC, cellulose nitrate/cellulose acetate filter membranes, polycarbonate, paraffin, polyethylene terephthalate, paper, and cloth. By comparing the properties of these substrates, two critical factors to ensure a successful transfer on bare substrates were identified: the substrate's hydrophobicity and good contact between the substrate and graphene. For substrates that do not satisfy those requirements, polymethylmethacrylate can be used as a surface modifier or glue to ensure successful transfer. Our results can be applied to facilitate current processes and open up directions for applications of chemical vapor deposition graphene on flexible substrates. A broad range of applications can be envisioned, including fabrication of graphene devices for opto/organic electronics, graphene membranes for gas/liquid separation, and ubiquitous electronics with graphene.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: HBV-HIV co-infection is associated with an increased liver-related morbidity and mortality. However, little is known about the natural history of chronic hepatitis B in HIV-infected individuals under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) receiving at least one of the two drugs that also affect HBV (TDF and LAM). Information about HBeAg status and HBV viremia in HIV/HBV co-infected patients is scarce. The objective of this study was to search for clinical and virological variables associated with HBeAg status and HBV viremia in patients of an HIV/HBV co-infected cohort. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed, of HBsAg-positive HIV-infected patients in treatment between 1994 and 2007 in two AIDS outpatient clinics located in the São Paulo metropolitan area, Brazil. The baseline data were age, sex, CD4 T+ cell count, ALT level, HIV and HBV viral load, HBV genotype, and duration of antiretroviral use. The variables associated to HBeAg status and HBV viremia were assessed using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 86 HBsAg patients were included in the study. Of these, 48 (56%) were using combination therapy that included lamivudine (LAM) and tenofovir (TDF), 31 (36%) were using LAM monotherapy, and 7 patients had no previous use of either one. Duration of use of TDF and LAM varied from 4 to 21 and 7 to 144 months, respectively. A total of 42 (48.9%) patients were HBeAg positive and 44 (51.1%) were HBeAg negative. The multivariate analysis revealed that the use of TDF for longer than 12 months was associated with undetectable HBV DNA viral load (serum HBV DNA level < 60 UI/ml) (p = 0.047). HBeAg positivity was associated with HBV DNA > 60 UI/ml (p = 0.001) and ALT levels above normality (p = 0.038). CONCLUSION: Prolonged use of TDF containing HAART is associated with undetectable HBV DNA viral load. HBeAg positivity is associated with HBV viremia and increased ALT levels.
