[Male transsexualism and hormonal therapy: radiologic pictures of the breast]. / Transessualismo maschile e terapia ormonale: quadri radiologici mammari.

Often the male transsexual takes hormonal drugs, sometimes under medical prescription but most frequently by his personal choice. They wish to obtain a development of mammary gland and the disappearance of hair from facial skin. Prolonged hormonal and incorrect treatments, mainly for too high dosage and absence of association with progesterone, assumption of oestrogens, can cause the growth of mammary tumours. The Authors present the results of a clinical and radiological study on 15 patients, 12 in treated with hormonal drugs for two years and 3 without any therapy.

[Follow-up of surgically treated transsexuals: what has changed?]. / Follow up dei transessuali operati: cosa è cambiato?

The surgery for both male and female transsexuals causes great difference in the behavior of operated patients. Then it is very important to analyze the variations of three parameters before and after operation: 1) the presence and the character of sexual feeling and the modality of sexual intercourse; 2) possibility of orgasm; 3) working behavior. The authors present the results of their study on 16 male transsexuals and 4 female transsexuals.

The patients controlled in our Sexologic Consultation Center for disorders of sex identity had been investigated in order both to have an indication to the surgical sex inversion and to control periodically some possible associated pathologies, which are mainly sex transmitted. A protocol of search and eventual control of these pathologies has been developed, in which lues, HBV and HIV infections received particular attention. The result of the investigation, performed on 58 patients, demonstrated a high incidence of serum positivity with respect to lues and HBV markers (the later infection seems to be due both to the sexual behaviour and to narcotic addiction). HIV infection had, on the contrary, a low incidence, stressing a lower diffusion of HIV among transsexuals than homosexuals.

It is only in the past few years that transsexualism has been deeply investigated systematically. In fact in our Country there is a lack of data on both the incidence of transsexualism and on the behaviour of transsexuals. In this paper we present our experience on this topic. In our Center we observed from 1983 till April 1989, 77 patients (68 M and 9 F). All the patients were investigated from endocrinologic, psychologic and psychiatric points of view. The following data were also collected: distribution of sex and age, people who sent the patients, place of birth, residence, family, social and cultural environments. The results of these investigations were: male patients demonstrated a strong reliance with the clan. A wide distribution of age, from 14 to 58 years, is represented. About half of the patients said to have experienced a break of familiar environment. A low cultural level was prevalent among males, whereas females demonstrated good erudition. Many patients resorted to prostitution to confirm their identity and many patients took hormone therapy to develop the physical characteristics of their desired sex.
