RESUMO

Understanding the scope, prevalence, and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic response will be a rich ground for research for many years. Key to the response to COVID-19 was the non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) measures, such as mask mandates or stay-in-place orders. For future pandemic preparedness, it is critical to understand the impact and scope of these interventions. Given the ongoing nature of the pandemic, existing NPI studies covering only the initial portion provide only a narrow view of the impact of NPI measures. This paper describes a dataset of NPI measures taken by counties in the U.S. state of Virginia that include measures taken over the first two years of the pandemic beginning in March 2020. This data enables analyses of NPI measures over a long time period that can produce impact analyses on both the individual NPI effectiveness in slowing the pandemic spread, and the impact of various NPI measures on the behavior and conditions of the different counties and state.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Servant leadership (SL) is an especially effective leadership style for healthcare. This article relays characteristics, attributes, and essential behaviors of SL. Jesus Christ demonstrated SL by inverting the traditional leadership triangle of leader at the top. Servant leadership promotes a culture of openness, transparency, empowerment, and sharing of ownership. The servant leader values listening, developing, encouraging, building collaboration, and maintaining personal relationships, while displaying authenticity, openness, accountability, and willingness to learn. The experience of a staff nurse functioning as a servant leader for patients and colleagues during the COVID-19 pandemic elaborates how SL can be evidenced in bedside care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe French primary care physicians' beliefs about cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and best practices for managing CVD. METHODS: This study comprised a purposive convenience sample of 656 primary care physicians in France, recruited from contacts made through the French Society of General Medicine. We compiled the physicians' responses to free text questions taken from an Internet-based survey and analyzed them using a qualitative approach. Physician's responses were inductively analyzed using content analysis. Responses were thematically coded, tabulated, and computed for frequencies. Overall themes and verbatim examples are presented in this article. RESULTS: The French physicians in our study are generally happy with their country's health care system and cite equity as the primary reason. Interestingly, along with food and lifestyle differences, they also cite equity of their health system as the reason for the lower CVD death rate in France, Japan, and Israel compared with the United States. The physicians believe that they are successful at managing CVD risk factors by emphasizing aspects of the doctor-patient relationship, including spending more time with patients and focusing on education. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians who are on the front line of care and management offer a fresh perspective on best practices for CVD prevention and management. The equity of the French health care system supports a "culture of care" in France that might lead to better outcomes for CVD risk factor patients than in the United States.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence of type 1 diabetes has been increasing all over the world including Saudi Arabia and environmental factors have been suggested to play an important role in its etiology. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate if there are any contributory roles of various environmental factors in the rising incidence of type 1 diabetes in children in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of Saudi Arab subjects (n = 119) diagnosed between 1980 and 2009 with type 1 diabetes and these subjects were classified to six groups on the basis of the onset of diabetes. RESULTS: 119 subjects (61 boys and 58 girls) with confirmed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes met the study eligibility criteria. 89 children (74%) presented with ketoacidosis. The mean age of onset was 4 3/4 years for Group II and age of onset increased to above 8 years on subsequent years. Excessive weight gain was noted in all study groups. No etiological influences of maternal age at birth, birth order, birth weight, early introduction of cow's milk and cereals, infections and vaccines as well as nitrate levels in drinking water were noted in any of the groups. The predicted doubling of diabetes in young children below 5 years as in previous studies was not found in our study. CONCLUSIONS: The rising incidence of type 1 diabetes over the last 30 years is not proved to have been influenced by various environmental factors.
