RESUMO

A prospective survey of adult burn patients was undertaken at the Casualty Department of the Royal Brisbane Hospital to determine the epidemiology of burns in the area covered by the hospital. All patients received a proforma when they presented for the first time. 144 people were included in the survey which ran from 1 July to 31 December 1980. Young males of low social status and elderly females, also of low social status, figured prominently. Many burns were the result of hot water or steam. Most patients had no associated medical condition and most people were burnt in or around their homes in daylight hours and at the weekend.

RESUMO

This paper deals with the results of a thirteen-and-a-half year survey of motorcycle accident patients admitted to the burns unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. There were 38 patients in the study. Population and analysis of data in three consecutive four-and-a-half year periods shows changing patterns in aetiology, management and morbidity. Cycle design and the use of suitable clothing were identified as reversible aetiological factors.

RESUMO

This paper details the results of an eleven-year survey of patients admitted to the burns unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital with injuries secondary to motor vehicle accidents. There were 64 subjects in this group. Forty-five were involved in car accidents and 19 in cycle accidents. Fifty of the patients were male, with a mean age of 26.9 years. The mean age of the 14 females was 24.9 years. Petrol fires emerged as the major source of injury in those individuals involved in car accidents, while hot metal injured most of the cyclists. Cyclists did not seem to be more prone to friction burns than motorists. Burns to the limbs predominated, but respiratory burns occurred in seven of the eight patients who did not survive. The median duration of hospitalization was 21 days, and the death rate in this series was 12.5%.
