Oestrosis is a nasal cavity myiasis caused by Oestrus ovis larvae from Oetrus ovis diptera flies in small ruminants. The presence of the larvae in the nasal cavity is known to cause rhinitis and sinusitis which can negatively impact the productivity of small ruminants. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of Oestrus ovis larvae infestation in sheep and goats presented for necropsy. We reviewed necropsy records of sheep and goats submitted to the Veterinary Pathology diagnostic laboratory at St. George's University from 2001 to 2017. Out of 104 goat necropsy cases, Oestrus ovis larvae were observed in 8 goats giving a prevalence of 7.7% (95% confidence interval (CI):3.38% to 14.6%). Similarly, from the 47 sheep necropsies, Oestus ovis larvae were observed in 4 sheep (8.5%) (95% CI: 2.83% to 20.46%). There was no significant difference in Oestrus ovis larvae infestation rates between sheep and goats (p = 1.000, Fisher's exact test). Oestrosis was an incidental finding in all the small ruminants examined at necropsy. This is the first report on Oestrus ovis larvae infestation in small ruminants in Grenada.

Knowledge of embryology is foundational for understanding normal anatomy and birth defects, yet, embryology is a notoriously difficult subject for medical students. Embryonic lateral folding in particular is one of the most challenging concepts in embryology. Highly effective teaching methods that promote active engagement with dynamic, three-dimensional models may be helpful for teaching this content. The aim of this study was to determine whether a hands-on modeling activity utilizing premade crocheted pieces constructed from durable, inexpensive yarn helped medical students enrolled in a pre-matriculation course to understand embryonic lateral folding. Change in knowledge was assessed using a pre-post design. Students also completed subjective evaluations regarding their satisfaction with the activity. Quiz scores in means (±SD) increased from 62.7 (±24.1) % before the activity to 77.0 (±17.1) % after the activity (P = 0.0495, two-tailed paired t test; d = 0.68). Generally, students reported that the activity was helpful and enjoyable, and the model pieces were easy to manipulate. These promising results suggest that hands-on activities with dynamic, three-dimensional models constitute an effective method for teaching embryology.

Methamphetamine (MA) is a potent, highly addictive psychostimulant abused by millions of people worldwide. MA induces neurotoxicity, damaging striatal dopaminergic terminals, and neuroinflammation, with striatal glial activation leading to pro-inflammatory cytokine and reactive oxygen species production. It is unclear whether MA-induced neuroinflammation contributes to MA-induced neurotoxicity. In the current study, we examined the linkage between the time course and dose response of MA-induced neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation. Adult male mice underwent a binge dosing regimen of four injections given every 2h with doses of 2, 4, 6, or 8 mg/kg MA per injection, and were sacrificed after 1, 3, 7, or 14 days. Binge MA treatment dose-dependently caused hyperthermia and induced hypoactivity after one day, though activity returned to control levels within one week. Striatal dopamine (DA) was diminished one day after treatment with at least 4 mg/kg MA, while DA turnover rates peaked after seven days. Although striatal tyrosine hydroxylase and DA transporter levels were also decreased one day after treatment with at least 4 mg/kg MA, they trended toward recovery by day 14. All doses of MA activated striatal glia within one day. While astrocyte activation persisted, microglial activation was attenuated over the two weeks of the study. These findings help clarify the relationship between MA-induced neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity, particularly regarding their temporal and dose-specific dynamics.

BACKGROUND: In preparation for the initial offering of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), Interior-Aleutians Campus Rural Nutrition Services (RNS) program, a literature review was conducted to establish the need for the proposed program and to substantiate the methodology for delivering integrated, culturally tailored postsecondary education and extension to Alaska Natives and rural Alaskans. There was a striking absence of peer-reviewed journal articles describing culturally tailored postsecondary health curricula for indigenous populations. OBJECTIVE: To complete and discuss a current (November 2012) literature review for culturally tailored postsecondary health curricula designed and delivered for indigenous populations. METHODS/DESIGN: The author conducted an expanded online search that employed multiple configurations of key terms using Google and Google Scholar, as well as pertinent sources. The author located archived reports in person and contacted authors by email. RESULTS: The expanded search produced a modest amount of additional literature for review. A disappointing number of publications describing or evaluating culturally tailored postsecondary health curricula in mainstream institutions are available. Related resources on culturally tailored extension and resources for the development and delivery of culturally tailored nutrition and health curricula were identified. CONCLUSIONS: The present results demonstrate a significant absence of literature on the topic, which may or may not indicate the absence of sufficient culturally tailored postsecondary health curricula for indigenous populations. There are indications that culturally tailored postsecondary health curricula for indigenous populations have the potential to effectively address certain issues of health literacy and health disparities.

Attempts to determine the influence of testicular hormones on learning and memory in males have yielded contradictory results. The present studies examined whether testicular hormones are important for maximal levels of spatial memory in young adult male rats. To minimize any effect of stress, we used the Object Location Task which is a spatial working memory task that does not involve food or water deprivation or aversive stimuli for motivation. In Experiment 1 sham gonadectomized male rats demonstrated robust spatial memory, but gonadectomized males showed diminished spatial memory. In Experiment 2 subcutaneous testosterone (T) capsules restored spatial memory performance in gonadectomized male rats, while rats with blank capsules demonstrated compromised spatial memory. In Experiment 3, gonadectomized male rats implanted with blank capsules again showed compromised spatial memory, while those with T, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or estradiol (E) capsules demonstrated robust spatial memory, indicating that T's effects may be mediated by its conversion to E or to DHT. Gonadectomized male rats injected with Antide, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor antagonist which lowers luteinizing hormone levels, also demonstrated spatial memory, comparable to that shown by T-, E-, or DHT-treated males. These data indicate that testicular androgens are important for maximal levels of spatial working memory in male rats, that testosterone may be converted to E and/or DHT to exert its effects, and that some of the effects of these steroid hormones may occur via negative feedback effects on LH.

The grey matter (GM) segments from T1 structural magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain in subjects at high risk of schizophrenia (n=146) were compared with normal control subjects (n=36) and first episode schizophrenic subjects (n=34) using automated voxel-based morphometry (VBM). The subjects were recruited for the Edinburgh High Risk Study (EHRS) and regional brain volumes had previously been measured using a semi-automated volumetric region of interest (ROI) method of analysis. For the current report, the images were processed using a study specific template and statistically analysed using the SPM99 program. The small volume correction tool in SPM was also used to restrict the analyses to specific voxels. Reductions in the probability of grey matter (GM) density were seen bilaterally in the anterior cingulate, and as a trend in the left parahippocampal gyrus for the high-risk vs. control subjects. In contrast, first episode schizophrenia subjects had less GM than high-risk subjects in several frontal and temporal regions. These results are compatible with the findings of our previous volumetric ROI analysis.

The aim of this study was to compare the gray matter segments from T1 structural MR images of the brain in first-episode schizophrenic subjects (n = 34) and normal control subjects (n = 36) using automated voxel-based morphometry (VBM). This study is novel in that few studies have examined subjects in their first episode of schizophrenia. The subjects were recruited for the Edinburgh High Risk project and regional brain volumes were previously measured using a semi-automated volumetric region of interest (ROI) method of analysis. The primary interest was to compare the results from the compatible parts of the ROI study and the primary VBM approach. Our secondary interest was to compare the results of a study-specific template that was constructed from the control group to those using the generic T1 template (152 Montreal Neurological Institute brains) supplied with SPM99 (statistical parametric mapping). The images were processed and statistically analyzed using the SPM99 program. VBM analysis identified significant decreases in gray matter in the schizophrenics relative to the normal control group at the corrected voxel level (P < 0.05) in the right anterior cingulate, right medial frontal lobe, left middle temporal gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, and the left limbic lobe. There were no increases in gray matter in the schizophrenics relative to the control group. The construction of a customized template appeared to improve the detection of structural abnormalities. The analyses were subsequently restricted to voxels within the amygdala-hippocampal complex using the SPM small-volume correction. This identified gray matter decreases in the schizophrenics, at the corrected voxel level (P < 0.05), in the left and right uncus and parahippocampal gyri and the right amygdala. These results are compatible with and extend the relevant findings of the previous volumetric ROI analysis, when allowing for the differences between the methods and interpretation of their results.
