RESUMO

The objective of this study was to quantify the seasonal risk of salt damage to bioswale plants, soil, microbes, and downstream waterbodies. To do so, we measured sodium, chloride, and electrical conductivity levels at seven bioswales located in the Bronx, New York City, over 42 storm events during a three-year monitoring period. The bioswale with the greatest salt contamination (median 206 mg/L chloride) had a unique inlet design without any possibility of inlet bypass. The most severe effects at all sites were found during the winter season, as infiltrate concentrations frequently (40% of winter samples) exceeded 1000 mg/L chloride, a level lethal to aquatic plants and invertebrates, and electrical conductivity exceeded 1500 µS cm-1 (50% of winter samples), a level that may displace bound metals from bioswale soils and into the subsurface. However, low levels of permanent salt contamination may be expected all year, as concentrations frequently (87% of all samples) exceeded the United States Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standard of 20 mg/L sodium. A regression of chloride washout over the year yielded concentrations greater than those damaging to soil structure and soil microbes (90 mg/L) until August 20th, and above those damaging to roadside vegetation (30 mg/L) for the entire year. Today, the vast majority of bioswales in cold climates are built with salt-tolerant vegetation, but prior to this study, it was unclear to what degree this was, in fact, necessary. Our findings confirm salt-tolerant vegetation to be optimal, as winter de-icing salts are not sufficiently flushed from soils by the spring growing season. Our findings also demonstrate how bioswale inlet design and site location can influence soil contamination.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of bioswales on nutrient pollution in an urban combined sewershed. This evaluation was based on two criteria: the ability of bioswales to (1) remove nutrient pollution from stormwater runoff directly and (2) decrease sewer overflow volumes, which indirectly reduces total sewershed nutrient pollution during a storm event. Bioswales' direct nutrient removal was determined by analyzing nitrogen and phosphorus levels in water samples at seven bioswales located in the Bronx, New York City (NYC) over 42 storm events, while a bioswale's indirect nutrient removal through combined sewer overflow reduction was estimated by quantifying water retention at one of the bioswales. The study results indicated that: 1) the bioswale retained about 40% of stormwater conveyed to it from a drainage area 231 times its size, 2) bioswales leach nutrients into the subsurface, and 3) nitrogen leaching from bioswales varied seasonally, while phosphorus leaching decreased steadily over the study period. Although the studied bioswales leached a median 1.3 kg nitrogen per year into the subsurface, they provided an aggregate decrease in watershed nutrient pollution, from 7.7 to 6 kg nitrogen per year, due to their reduction of combined sewer overflow via stormwater retention.

To protect recreational water users from waterborne pathogen exposure, it is crucial that waterways are monitored for the presence of harmful bacteria. In NYC, a citizen science campaign is monitoring waterways impacted by inputs of storm water and untreated sewage during periods of rainfall. However, the spatial and temporal scales over which the monitoring program can sample are constrained by cost and time, thus hindering the construction of databases that benefit both scientists and citizens. In this study, we first illustrate the scientific value of a citizen scientist monitoring campaign by using the data collected through the campaign to characterize the seasonal variability of sampled bacterial concentration as well as its response to antecedent rainfall. Second, we examine the efficacy of the HyServe Compact Dry ETC method, a lower cost and time-efficient alternative to the EPA-approved IDEXX Enterolert method for fecal indicator monitoring, through a paired sample comparison of IDEXX and HyServe (total of 424 paired samples). The HyServe and IDEXX methods return the same result for over 80% of the samples with regard to whether a water sample is above or below the EPA's recreational water quality criteria for a single sample of 110 enterococci per 100mL. The HyServe method classified as unsafe 90% of the 119 water samples that were classified as having unsafe enterococci concentrations by the more established IDEXX method. This study seeks to encourage other scientists to engage with citizen scientist communities and to also pursue the development of cost- and time-efficient methodologies to sample environmental variables that are not easily collected or analyzed in an automated manner.

RESUMO

The threat that ocean acidification (OA) poses to marine ecosystems is now recognized and U.S. funding agencies have designated specific funding for the study of OA. We present a research framework for studying OA that describes it as a biogeochemical event that impacts individual species and ecosystems in potentially unexpected ways. We draw upon specific lessons learned about ecosystem responses from research on acid rain, carbon dioxide enrichment in terrestrial plant communities, and nitrogen deposition. We further characterize the links between carbon chemistry changes and effects on individuals and ecosystems, and enumerate key hypotheses for testing. Finally, we quantify how U.S. research funding has been distributed among these linkages, concluding that there is an urgent need for research programs designed to anticipate how the effects of OA will reverberate throughout assemblages of species.

Quantifying green roof evapotranspiration (ET) in urban climates is important for assessing environmental benefits, including stormwater runoff attenuation and urban heat island mitigation. In this study, a dynamic chamber method was developed to quantify ET on two extensive green roofs located in New York City, NY. Hourly chamber measurements taken from July 2009 to December 2009 and April 2012 to October 2013 illustrate both diurnal and seasonal variations in ET. Observed monthly total ET depth ranged from 0.22 cm in winter to 15.36 cm in summer. Chamber results were compared to two predictive methods for estimating ET; namely the Penman-based ASCE Standardized Reference Evapotranspiration (ASCE RET) equation, and an energy balance model, both parametrized using on-site environmental conditions. Dynamic chamber ET results were similar to ASCE RET estimates; however, the ASCE RET equation overestimated bottommost ET values during the winter months, and underestimated peak ET values during the summer months. The energy balance method was shown to underestimate ET compared the ASCE RET equation. The work highlights the utility of the chamber method for quantifying green roof evapotranspiration and indicates green roof ET might be better estimated by Penman-based evapotranspiration equations than energy balance methods.

Air-water exchange is an important process controlling the fate of many organic chemicals in the environment. Modeling this process is hampered by the lack of direct observations. Thus, the purpose of this work was to derive direct measurements of the mass transfer coefficients for air-water exchange (v(aw)) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that may be used to check the validity of values derived from tracer gas experiments. v(aw) values for PCBs were determined using previously published turbulent fluxes divided by the corresponding dissolved phase concentrations. The median v(aw) values for each homolog decreased with increasing molecular weight and ranged from 0.29 for hexachlorobiphenyls to 2.2 m d(-1) for monochlorobiphenyls with a propagated uncertainty of about 70%, lower than in previous studies. Due to relatively low wind speeds and possible sorption of PCBs to colloids, these numbers may be biased low. These field measurements of v(aw) differ by as much as a factor of 23 from predictions based on the widely-used Whitman two-film model. Therefore a new formulation for the calculation of v(aw) based on field measurements is needed. This study demonstrates that micrometeorological approaches are a viable option for the measurement of v(aw) for hydrophobic organics such as PCBs and should be used to generate enough field data on the air-water exchange of hydrophobic organics to allow the development of new predictive models.

This study represents the first time that a micrometeorological technique, using turbulent transport measurements, has been used to determine the direction and magnitude of air-water exchange of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The study was conducted during July 2008 on the Hudson River estuary near the Tappan Zee Bridge, which is the site of some of the most serious PCB contamination in the world. Gas-phase ΣPCB concentrations measured at two heights above the water column averaged 1.1 ng m(-3), and concentrations were usually lower in the upper air sample, indicating net transport of PCBs from the water column to the air. Volatilization PCB fluxes were calculated using the modified Thornthwaite-Holzman equation. Values of friction velocity and atmospheric stability were calculated using the Aerodynamic Gradient and Eddy Correlation techniques. The PCB fluxes were corrected for changes in atmospheric stability using the atmospheric stability factor of water vapor (ϕ(w)) calculated from empirical formulations which ranged from 1.0 to 3.2 (neutral to stable atmospheric boundary layer conditions). Vertical ΣPCB fluxes ranged from +0.5 µg m(-2) d (-1) to +13 µg m(-2) d (-1). Mono- through tri-homologues accounted for about half of ΣPCB fluxes, with tetra- through hexa-homologue accounting for the other half. This work demonstrates the utility of a micrometeorological approach to measuring the air-water exchange of organic contaminants.

RESUMO

The past decade has seen a substantial amount of research on air-sea gas exchange and its environmental controls. These studies have significantly advanced the understanding of processes that control gas transfer, led to higher quality field measurements, and improved estimates of the flux of climate-relevant gases between the ocean and atmosphere. This review discusses the fundamental principles of air-sea gas transfer and recent developments in gas transfer theory, parameterizations, and measurement techniques in the context of the exchange of carbon dioxide. However, much of this discussion is applicable to any sparingly soluble, non-reactive gas. We show how the use of global variables of environmental forcing that have recently become available and gas exchange relationships that incorporate the main forcing factors will lead to improved estimates of global and regional air-sea gas fluxes based on better fundamental physical, chemical, and biological foundations.

When measuring interfacial tensions, conventional spinning drop tensiometry requires knowledge of the index of refraction of the denser, outer fluid phase, in order to correct for the magnification of the inner, spinning drop. We have modified a spinning drop tensiometer to accommodate a square section sample tube, which does not require this correction. Tests performed using calibration rods are used to demonstrate this fact. The interfacial tension of toluene and water is also measured using this new design. The ensuing results are in agreement with measurements obtained using a conventional circular sample tube. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.
