RESUMO

Interest in measurement of children's executive functions has shown a major increase over the past two decades. The present study evaluates two new apps (EYT and eFun) for measuring executive functions in children. The results of this study show that children (aged 5-8) enjoy executive function assessment in the form of games on an iPad. However, only one executive function, EYT working memory, showed significant positive correlations with several types of grades (e.g., English and maths) in primary school students. New, self-assessed, child-friendly executive function measurement tools have the potential to provide future possibilities for teachers to integrate information on cognitive ability into student learning plans.

RESUMO

To be an effective teacher, a combination of specific professional skills and psychological attributes are required. With increasingly fluid employment conditions, particularly in the international context, recruiters and schools are under considerable pressure to quickly differentiate candidates and make successful placements, which involves more than just determining if a candidate holds an appropriate qualification. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to measure theoretically and empirically valuable psychological attributes in an international sample of schoolteachers to determine the most valuable correlates of satisfaction and position duration. An international sample (N = 335) of elementary, middle and high school teachers completed an online survey to capture their workplace satisfaction, position duration and measure 15 psychological attributes using validated instruments. Linear associations were estimated using hierarchical regression with this analysis complemented and compared with follow-up non-linear neural network models. Using regression, lower agreeableness (less people-oriented) emerged as the strongest correlate of longer position duration throughout the cohort. In elementary school teachers, lower impulsivity and higher organizational commitment emerged as the strongest correlates of longer position duration. In high school teachers, better stress tolerance and higher organizational commitment emerged as the strongest correlates of longer position duration. Using neural networks to suggest predictive models, low levels of neuroticism and impulsivity were the strongest predictors of longer position duration in elementary school teachers. High stress tolerance also predicted high work satisfaction in elementary teachers, whereas it was lower impulsivity that most strongly predicted higher work satisfaction in high school teachers. Innovation tendencies, perhaps surprisingly, appeared as a consistent predictor of lower levels of workplace satisfaction across teaching levels. Honesty-humility also emerged as a predictor of shorter position duration, particularly for primary/elementary teachers scoring above the mean. Taken together the results suggest an interesting balancing act that needs to be struck between hiring people-oriented and innovative teachers who may be more effective and adaptable but also at greater risk of changing position, possibly due to an increased interest and ability to transition into new social environments.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A call for active inclusion of consumers in research; recognising and valuing the knowledge that arises through lived experience, is made in the literature. However, genuine inclusion of consumers as members of the research team remains rare. Opponents present two barriers: lack of required knowledge and skills and lack of capacity to conduct rigorous research. METHODS: This study involved a collaborative process to develop training materials for consumer researchers. Reliability of self-report outcome data collected by five trained consumers was then examined. RESULTS: Quantitative results suggest that trained consumers can facilitate self-report interviews to the high standard expected by the general research community. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides both methods and resources to extend occupational therapy consumer-centred practice into the realm of research.

RESUMO

Pathologic conditions resulting from excessive bone destruction include osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, metastases, periprosthetic osteolysis, cherubism, and others. A scarcity of molecular targets in bone has thwarted the development of drugs to combat these conditions. Nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT) is a master regulator of osteoclastogenesis and is induced by RANKL. The immunosuppressive drugs, Cyclosporin A and Tacrolimus, inhibit osteoclast formation by targeting the NFAT/calcineurin pathway. These NFAT inhibitors should be considered in the treatment of osteoclastic hyper-resorptive syndromes.

RESUMO

The protein Src homology 3 domain-binding protein 2 (SH3BP2) is a regulator of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha generation in macrophages and of osteoclast differentiation. SH3BP2 regulates bone marrow monocyte responses to macrophage and osteoclast differentiation signals downstream of the receptors for macrophage colony-stimulating factor and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand. SH3BP2 is a potential target for the development of novel anti-TNF-alpha therapeutic interventions as well as a target for suppression of osteoclastogenesis.

RESUMO

The response of trauma systems in rural areas is uncertain since distances between injury scenes and trauma care are considerable. Timely arrival at definitive care is critical for persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) since secondary damage can occur during the hours following injury. We evaluated how the implementation of a trauma system in a predominately rural state affected the triage of TBI patients and their risk for mortality. The Iowa System Trauma Registry Dataset was analyzed, and included patients evaluated before trauma system implementation, 1997-1998, and after implementation, 2002-2003. Patients were identified using ICD9-CM codes or AIS codes, and included 710 pre-system patients and 886 post-system patients. Multivariate logistic regression assessed the effect of the trauma system on survival while controlling for confounders. Following implementation of the trauma system, patients treated in Level I or II facilities were older (p = 0.019), more often had multiple injuries (p = 0.0002), and had more severe TBI (p = 0.008). After controlling for confounders, transferred patients and those directly admitted were less likely to die in 72 h in the post-system than the pre-system (odds ratio [OR] = 0.56, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.36, 0.88; OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.32, 0.79). Implementation of the Iowa trauma system seems to have led to more appropriate triage and transport for TBI patients, and this likely contributed to reduced in-hospital mortality.
