RESUMO

Despite evidence over the past decade that patients like and will use patient-centered computing systems in managing their health, patients have remained forgotten stakeholders in advances in clinical computing systems. We present a framework for patient empowerment and the technical realization of that framework in an architecture called CareLink. In an evaluation of the initial deployment of CareLink in the support of neonatal intensive care, we have demonstrated a reduction in the length of stay for very-low birthweight infants, and an improvement in family satisfaction with care delivery. With the ubiquitous adoption of the Internet into the general culture, patient-centered computing provides the opportunity to mend broken health care relationships and reconnect patients to the care delivery process. CareLink itself provides functionality to support both clinical care and research, and provides a living laboratory for the further study of patient-centered computing.

RESUMO

Healthcare delivery systems involving technology are vulnerable to year 2000 date problems. This paper describes the unique features of this problem as related to healthcare, proposes a classification to the problems, and structures an approach to begin resolving this looming disaster.

RESUMO

A survey of members of the Federation of Prosthodontic Organizations was done to determine their opinions about various preprosthetic surgical procedures used to treat patients with alveolar atrophy of the maxilla and mandible. In most instances there was lack of consensus, indicating a need for consultation and close cooperation between the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist in the management of individual patients.

RESUMO

This study was undertaken to compare the panoramic radiograph with the standard hospital mandibular series for the diagnosis of mandibular fractures. Of the 88 fractures present in the patient population, 92% were recognized in the panoramic radiograph, while only 66% were detected in the hospital series. All fractures seen in the hospital series were also seen in the panoramic view. It was therefore concluded that the panoramic view is superior to the standard hospital series for the diagnosis of mandibular fractures.
