[The methods for the treatment of combined nasal deformities].

The objective of this study was to improve the cosmetic outcome of the surgical treatment of combined nasal deformities performed by the author using the rhinoplastic technique in 144 patients presenting with this condition during the period from 2006 to 2010. The patients of the main (study) group underwent the surgical intervention with the use of improved technologies proposed by the author and special instruments developed for the purpose. The patients of the control group were treated by standard surgical techniques. A statistically significant decrease of the relative frequency (percentage) of secondary nasal deformities was documented in the study group compared with the control one (from 6.94% to 2.78%). It is concluded that the technologies of rhinoplastic interventions described in the present publication can be recommended for the use in the practical work of otorhinolaryngologists and plastic surgeons.

[The role of endogenous and exogenous factors in the development of psychoses in organic dementias in later life]. / Rol' éndogennykh i ékzogennykh faktorov v razvitii psikhozov pri organicheskikh dementsiiakh pozdnego vozrasta.

Influence of different exogenic and endogenic factors (including the very organic process) as analyzed in 231 patients of psychiatric hospital with organic dementia: vascular (VD)--57 cases, senile dementia of Alzheimer's type (SDAT)--29 individuals, dementia conditioned by a combination of vascular and senile-atrophic processes (VD/SDAT)--37 patients, Alzheimer's disease (70 patients) and Pick's disease (38 cases). 160 patients (the study group) had psychotic disorders, 71 patients (the control group) hadn't such disorders. The most frequent (98.2%) and the most various psychotic syndromes (especially delirium and hallucination syndromes) were observed in VD, SDAT and VD/SDAT. A rate of organic process progression was less in patients of the study group as compared with a control one. Prevalence in the study group of cases with endogenic-constitutional predisposition to psychoses development was significant. The role of the other exocerebral factors in origin of psychoses was not so pronounced; among them psychogenias were rather significant, their frequency was 4 times higher in the study group than in the control one. The relationship of psychotic syndromes with origin, stage and progression rate of dementia might indicate a leading role of the organic process in their genesis.

[Clinical and social aspects of loneliness among elderly psychiatric patients]. / Klinicheskie i sotsial'nye aspekty odinochestva psikhicheski bol'nykh pozdnego vozrasta.

The paper presents investigation of 70 lonely patients and 170 patients living in family (older than 60 years old). Clinical characteristics (nosologic entity, syndrome) and demographic (sex, age), social-economic (housing living conditions, income) were considered. Lonely patients were younger, they had worse social, living conditions; women, schizophrenics and patients with productive syndromes, severe somatic pathology were often among them. The group of lonely patients was more homogeneous in nosologic entities, syndrome manifestations, in both demographic and social structure. Patients living in family were more heterogenous (wider spectrum of psychic disorders and larger variability of social and demographic parameters).

[The effect of water-soluble beta-carotene (Vetoron) on the immune status of children from ecologically unfavorable regions]. / Vliianie vodorastvorimogo beta-karotina (vetorona) na immunnyi status detei iz ékologicheski neblagopriiatnykh regionov.

Resort therapy-induced immunological changes were studied in 67 children from the unfavourable environmental areas, out of them 38 children (an experimental group) on Vetoron and 29 untreated children (a control group). The examinees were found to have secondary (acquired) immunodeficiency appeared as lower levels of immunoglobulin (Ig) A and higher levels of IgM, IgG and IgE. The health resort therapy improved the body's overall responsiveness--elevated the levels of IgA and IgM-reduced these of IgE, enhanced the activity of alkaline phosphatase and increased monocyte counts. The use Vetoron enhanced the efficiency of spa therapy in the examined children versus the matched ones, significantly elevated the relative levels of T lymphocytes and IgG and increased the activity of phagocytes.

Enthalpies of Solution of KBr, KI, KIO3, and KIO4 in H2O.

Enthalpy of solution measurements of four potassium salts in H2O were made in either an adiabatic or an isoperibol calorimeter or both. The following summarizes the measured and recommended values: [Table: see text] The value for KIO4 has been corrected for the hydrolysis of the periodate ion. The ΔC p = -(82.5 ± 4.3)J·mol-1·K-1 for the unhydrolysed reaction. For the reaction of KBr in H2O, ΔC p was measured as -(166.6 ± 7.2) J·mol-1·K-1 in the temperature range 298 K to 319 K. Measurements with the isoperibol calorimeter are also reported for the endothermic reaction of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, SRM 724a, in aqueous NaOH (0.05 mol·L-1). Comparisons of measurements by different calorimeters on the same samples reveal unidentified calorimetric errors for endothermic reactions which are greater than the imprecision of the measurements.
