The study was conducted to evaluate the phytoremediation response of Arundo donax and vetiver grasses irrigated by different levels (0%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) of treated tannery wastewater. After 60 days, matured plants were harvested, sorted into root, leaf, stem and shoot, dried and digested using standard procedures and analyzed for Cr(VI) and total Cr using atomic absorption and UV-Visible spectrophotometer, respectively. Corresponding results revealed height growth of Arundo donax and vetiver grasses was greatly affected by the irrigation level of tannery wastewater. Roots of vetiver grasses accumulate the highest amount of Cr(VI) (2.76 mg/kg) compared to the shoots Cr(VI) 1.72 mg/kg. Lowering concentration of tannery wastewater used for irrigation to 10% boosted the accumulation capacity (3.99 mg/kg) of the root of Arundo donax grasses for Cr(VI). The translocation values (TF > 1) demonstrated favourability of Arundo donax grasses for phytoextraction of Cr(VI) to plant tissues above ground level. However, the bioaccumulation values (BAF > 1) of the root of vetiver grasses proved suitability for the phytostabilisation of Cr(VI). Arundo donax and vetiver grasses have demonstrated a substantial reduction in Cr contamination of soils from tanneries, and therefore, phytoremediation is potentially feasible for the decontamination of Cr-polluted environments.


The phytoremediation experiment was performed on the survival of the grass seedlings and suitability of the real tannery wastewater both treated and untreated at multiple concentrations to show how severe the pollution level besides presenting the data while most studies mainly focused on utilizing synthetic wastewater.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a versatile tuber crop that holds nutritional, cultural, and economic values. Yam is a major source of carbohydrates for tropical Countries and provides various nutrients and health benefits. This study aims to characterize the chemical, structural, and thermal properties of yam flour using various analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis. Additionally, the pasting and rheological properties of yam flour were evaluated, as they are crucial for product development and enhancing the value of this unconventional vegetable. D. cayenensis complex had the highest total starch (64.63 ± 1.61 %) and soluble sugar (4.95 ± 0.46 %) content, which was significantly higher than other yam species. The amylose content of yam flours showed significant (p < 0.05) differences among the yam species. D. cayenensis flour exhibited significantly the highest peak (2923.66 cP) and steak back viscosity (2097.66 cP) among the yam species associated with their greater amylose content. There were notable variations in pasting and gelatinization parameters among the species. The peak temperatures of D. bulbifera and D. cayenensis complex were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than D. cayenensis and D. rotundata flours. The rheological measurements of yam flours demonstrated solid-like behavior with varying intensities. Furthermore, the morphology of tuber yam flour particles was oval to ellipsoidal shaped, with some appearing ovoid, and the smaller granules appearing spherical. The X-ray diffraction showed that all yam flours exhibit a B-type pattern. This study provide a better understanding of this unconventional vegetable's potential applications in the food industry and contribute to its value addition.

RESUMO

Developing mitigation mechanisms for eutrophication caused by the uncontrolled release of nutrients is in the interest of the scientific community. Adsorption, being operationally simple and economical with no significant secondary pollution, has proven to be a feasible technology for resource recovery. However, the utility of adsorption often lies in the availability of effective adsorbents. In this regard, polymer-based nanocomposite (PNC) adsorbents have been highly acclaimed by researchers because of their high surface area, multiple functional groups, biodegradability, and ease of large-scale production. This review paper elaborates on the functionality, adsorption mechanisms, and factors that affect the adsorption and adsorption-desorption cycles of PNC adsorbents toward nutrient resources. Moreover, this review gives insight into the application of recovered nutrient resources in soil amendment.

Two selective and sensitive reagents, 2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (2-APT) and 3-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (3-APT) were used for the spectrophotometric determination of Cu(II). Both reagents gave yellowish Cu(II) complex at a pH range of 8.0-10.0. Beer's law was obeyed for Cu(II)-2-APT and Cu(II)-3-APT in the concentration range of 0.16-1.3 and 0.44-1.05 µg/mL, respectively. The molar absorptivity and of Cu(II)-2-APT and Cu(II)-3-APT were 2.14 × 10(4) at 370 nm, and 6.7 × 10(3) L/mol cm at 350 nm, respectively, while the Sandell's sensitivity were 0.009 and 0.029 µg/cm(2) in that order. The correlation coefficient of the standard curves of Cu(II)-2-APT and Cu(II)-3-APT were 0.999 and 0.998, respectively. The detection limit of the Cu(II)-2-APT and Cu(II)-3-APT methods were 0.053 and 0.147 µg/mL, respectively. The results demonstrated that the procedure is precise (relative standard deviation <2 %, n = 10). The method was tested for Cu(II) determination in soil and vegetable samples. Comparisons of the results with those obtained using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer for Cu(II) determination also tested the validity of the method using paired sample t test at the 0.05 level showing a good agreement between them.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most widely used as a staple food crop for human diets. It is an excellent source of minerals. In this study, contents of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb in potato cultivars cultivated in Yilmana Densa, and Mecha districts of the West Gojjam zone, Ethiopia were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. A 0.50 g oven-dried potato sample was digested using a mixture of 10 mL HNO3:HClO4 (4:1 v/v) at 120 °C for 3 h. The concentration ranges in dry weight basis in decreasing order were: Mg (420-438 mg/kg) > Ca (176-254 mg/kg) > Fe (27.3-90.4 mg/kg) > Zn (20.6-77.7 mg/kg) > (2.00-17.4 mg/kg) for Pb. The toxic heavy metal Cd was below the limit of detection in all the analyzed samples (<0.1 mg/kg). The Mg found in highest contents while Fe was the most abundant microelement. The Cd was found below the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake of WHO/FAO and European Commission (EC) while Pb was above the limit. A wide range of variations was observed in the metal contents of potato cultivars collected from the two districts. Potato cultivars grown in West Gojam zone of Ethiopian could contribute a substantial amount of Fe and Zn together with the major elements, Ca and Mg to the individual's daily dietary needs if consumed on a regular basis.

The quantification of 14 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was carried out in sediment samples collected from Akaki River, Lake Awassa, and Lake Ziway, Ethiopia. The concentration of PAHs in the samples was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode, after microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), using acetone/n-hexane (1:1, v/v) mixture. The accuracy of the method was determined by extracting and analyzing New York/New Jersey waterway sediment standard reference material (SRM 1944). The measured concentrations of PAHs in SRM 1944 agreed well with the certified values. In samples from Akaki River, Lake Awassa, and Lake Ziway, the total content of PAHs determined ranged from 0 to 3070 ng/g (average 534 ng/g), 24.9 to 413 ng/g (average 169 ng/g), and 15.0 to 305 ng/g (average 175 ng/g), respectively. Source ratios indicated that the PAHs were mainly from petrogenic origin. Sediments from all sampling sites indicated negligible levels of toxicity with no risk of adverse biological effects.
