RESUMO

Foveal vision loss makes the fovea as saccadic reference point maladaptive. Training programs have been proposed that shift the saccadic reference point from the fovea to an extrafoveal location, just outside the area of vision loss. We used a visual search task to train normal-sighted participants to fixate target items with a predetermined 'forced retinal location' (FRL) adjacent to a simulated central scotoma. We found that training was comparatively successful for scotomata that had either a sharp or blurry demarcation from the background. Completing the task with sharp-edged scotoma resulted in overall higher training gains. Training with blurry-edged scotoma, however, yielded overall better results when scotoma size was increased after training and participants needed to adapt to a more eccentric FRL, as may be necessary in patients with progressive degenerative eye diseases.

Central vision loss is one of the leading causes of visual impairment in the elderly and its frequency is increasing. Without formal training, patients adopt an unaffected region of the retina as a new fixation location, a preferred retinal locus (PRL). However, learning to use the PRL as a reference location for saccades, that is, saccadic re-referencing, is protracted and time-consuming. Recent studies showed that training with visual search tasks can expedite this process. However, visual search can be driven by salient external features - leading to efficient search, or by internal goals, usually leading to inefficient, attention-demanding search. We compared saccadic re-referencing training in the presence of a simulated central scotoma with either an efficient or an inefficient visual search task. Participants had to respond by fixating the target with an experimenter-defined retinal location in the lower visual field. We observed that comparable relative training gains were obtained in both tasks for a number of behavioral parameters, with higher training gains for the trained task, compared to the untrained task. The transfer to the untrained task was only observed for some parameters. Our findings thus confirm and extend previous research showing comparable efficiency for exogenously and endogenously driven visual search tasks for saccadic re-referencing training. Our results also show that transfer of training gains to related tasks may be limited and needs to be tested for saccadic re-referencing-training paradigms to assess its suitability as a training tool for patients.

Patients with central vision loss (CVL) adopt an eccentric retinal location for fixation, a preferred retinal location (PRL), to compensate for vision loss at the fovea. Although most patients with CVL are able to rapidly use a PRL instead of the fovea, saccadic re-referencing to a PRL develops slowly. Without re-referencing, saccades land the saccade target in the scotoma. This results in corrective saccades and leads to inefficient visual exploration. Here, we tested a new method to train saccadic re-referencing. Healthy participants performed gaze-contingent visual search tasks with simulated central scotoma in which participants had to fixate targets with an experimenter-defined forced retinal location (FRL). In experiment 1, we compared single-target search and foraging search tasks in the course of five training sessions. Results showed that both tasks improved the efficiency of gaze sequences and led to saccadic re-referencing to the FRL. In experiment 2, we trained participants extensively for 25 sessions, both with and without a gaze-contingent FRL-marker visible during training. After extensive training, observers' performance approached that of foveal vision. Thus, gaze-contingent FRL-fixation may become an efficient tool for saccadic re-referencing training in patients with central vision loss.

Shape perception varies depending on many factors. For example, presenting a stimulus in the periphery often yields a different appearance compared with its foveal presentation. However, how exactly shape appearance is altered under different conditions remains elusive. One reason for this is that studies typically measure identification performance, leaving details about target appearance unknown. The lack of appearance-based methods and general challenges to quantify appearance complicate the investigation of shape appearance. Here, we introduce Geometrically Restricted Image Descriptors (GRIDs), a method to investigate the appearance of shapes. Stimuli in the GRID paradigm are shapes consisting of distinct line elements placed on a grid by connecting grid nodes. Each line is treated as a discrete target. Observers are asked to capture target appearance by placing lines on a freely viewed response grid. We used GRIDs to investigate the appearance of letters and letter-like shapes. Targets were presented at 10° eccentricity in the right visual field. Gaze-contingent stimulus presentation was used to prevent eye movements to the target. The data were analyzed by quantifying the differences between targets and response in regard to overall accuracy, element discriminability, and several distinct error types. Our results show how shape appearance can be captured by GRIDs, and how a fine-grained analysis of stimulus parts provides quantifications of appearance typically not available in standard measures of performance. We propose that GRIDs are an effective tool to investigate the appearance of shapes.

Crowding is the deleterious influence of surrounding objects (flankers) on target identification. A central rule of crowding is that it is stronger when the target and the flankers are similar. Here, we show in three experiments how emergent features break this rule. Observers identified targets with various emergent features consisting of a pair of adjacent chevrons either pointing in opposite ('Diamonds' and 'Xs'), or the same (both up or down) directions. Targets were flanked by Diamonds or Xs, resulting in conditions with different levels of target-flanker similarity. Despite high target-flanker similarity, Diamonds were identified better than Xs when flanked by Diamonds. Participants' judgments of target conspicuity, however, showed that Diamonds were not perceived to stand out more strongly from X than Diamond flankers. Next, we asked observers to indicate whether all presented items were identical. We found superior performance with all Diamonds compared to all Xs, indicating that display uniformity judgments benefitted from the emergent features of Diamonds. Our results showed that emergent features and the information content of the entire display strongly modulated crowding. We suggest that conventional crowding rules only hold when target and flankers are artificially constrained to be mutually independent.

Crowding is the impairment of target identification when the target is surrounded by nearby flankers. Two hallmarks of crowding are that it is stronger when the flankers are close to the target and when the target strongly groups with the flankers. Here we show the opposite of both. A chevron target (pointing up or down) was presented at 8° eccentricity in the right visual field. It was surrounded by four flankers. Three of the flankers varied (pointing left or right). The fourth, the critical flanker (CF), was fixed in one orientation (left, right, up, down), yielding different configurations with the target. The CF's distance to the target was varied. Target identification depended strongly on the distance and the orientation of the CF. Remarkably, when the target and the CF grouped into a good configuration and elicited an emergent feature, performance was high if the CF was close to the target. This effect was particularly strong when participants were informed about the different CF-target configurations before the experiment. Reducing crowding and grouping by asynchronous presentation of the CF and the other items abolished the effect. When participants reported the entire configuration of the CF and the target, performance rapidly decreased with increasing spacing when the CF and the target were different but not when they were the same, indicating different spatial extents of the corresponding grouping processes. Our results show that the features emerging from the configurations of the target and a flanker strongly modulate crowding. Strong target-flanker grouping can benefit performance.

Recent findings on alpha band oscillations suggest their important role in memory consolidation and suppression of external distractors such as environmental noise. However, less attention was given to the phenomenon of internal distracting information being solely inherent to the stimuli content. Human memory may be prone to internal distractions caused by semantic relatedness between the meaning of words (e.g., atom, neutron, nucleus, etc.) to be encoded, i.e., semantic interference. Our study investigates the brain oscillatory dynamics behind the semantic interference phenomenon, whose possible outcome is known as false memories. In this direction, Deese-Roediger-McDermott word lists were appropriated for a modified Sternberg paradigm in auditory modality. Participants received semantically related and unrelated word lists via headphones while EEG data were acquired. Semantic interference triggered the false memory rates to be higher than those of other types of memory errors. Analysis demonstrated that the upper part of alpha band (∼10-12Hz) power decreases on parieto-occipital channels in the retention interval, prior to the probe item for semantically related condition. Our study elucidates the oscillatory mechanisms behind semantic interference by relying on alpha functional inhibition theory.
