RESUMO

Plate-like structures can be characterized by a variety of abrupt geometric changes affecting the Lamb wave propagation, similarly to damage occurring in service. Therefore, a deep knowledge of phenomena involved in the interaction between guide waves and discontinuities is required. For this purpose, an experimental investigation is carried out considering an isotropic plate where an abrupt thickness change is present. The fundamental modes excitation is operated by a piezoelectric transducer while the signal sensing in multiple locations, also across the discontinuity, is performed by a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. The investigation reveals mode conversion and highlights how the effects on the wave propagation depend upon the discontinuity geometrical characteristics. A peridynamics-based model representing the examined problem is also defined and its effectiveness to simulate the observed phenomena is proven.

Structural health monitoring represents an interesting enabling technology towards increasing aviation safety and reducing operating costs by unlocking novel maintenance approaches and procedures. However, the benefits of such a technology are limited to maintenance costs reductions by cutting or even eliminating some maintenance scheduled checks. The key limitation to move a step further in exploiting structural health monitoring technology is represented by the regulation imposed in sizing aircraft composite structures. A safety margin of 2.0 is usually applied to estimate the ultimate loading that composite structures must withstand. This limitation is imposed since physical nondestructive inspection of composite structures is really challenging or even impossible in some cases. However, a structural health monitoring system represents a viable way for a real time check for the health status of a composite structure. Thus, the introduction of structural health monitoring should help into reducing the stringent safety margin imposed by aviation regulation for a safe design of composite structures. By assuming a safety margin reduction from 2.0 to 1.75 thanks to the installation of permanently attached sensors for structural health diagnostics, this paper assesses the potential fuel savings and direct operating costs through a multidisciplinary analysis on a A220-like aircraft. According to the foreseen level of technology, addressed through the number of sensors per square meter, a DOC saving from 2% up to 5% is achievable preserving, at the same time, all the key aircraft performance.

To assess the ability of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems, a variety of prerequisites and contributing factors have to be taken into account. Within this publication, this variety is analyzed for actively introduced guided wave-based SHM systems. For these systems, it is not possible to analyze their performance without taking into account their structure and their applied system parameters. Therefore, interdependencies of performance assessment are displayed in an SHM pyramid based on the structure and its monitoring requirements. Factors influencing the quality, capability and reliability of the monitoring system are given and put into relation with state-of-the-art performance analysis in a non-destructive evaluation. While some aspects are similar and can be treated in similar ways, others, such as location, environmental condition and structural dependency, demand novel solutions. Using an open-access data set from the Open Guided Waves platform, a detailed method description and analysis of path-based performance assessment is presented.The adopted approach clearly begs the question about the decision framework, as the threshold affects the reliability of the system. In addition, the findings show the effect of the propagation path according to the damage position. Indeed, the distance of damage directly affects the system performance. Otherwise, the propagation direction does not alter the potentiality of the detection approach despite the anisotropy of composites. Nonetheless, the finite waveguide makes it necessary to look at the whole paths, as singular phenomena associated with the reflections may appear. Numerical investigation helps to clarify the centrality of wave mechanics and the necessity to take sensor position into account as an influencing factor. Starting from the findings achieved, all the issues are discussed, and potential future steps are outlined.

This paper deals with guided wave-based structural health monitoring of composite overwrapped pressure vessels adopted for space application. Indeed, they are well suited for this scope thanks to their improved performance compared with metallic tanks. However, they are characterized by a complex damage mechanics and suffer from impact induced damage, e.g., due to space debris. After reviewing the limited progress in this specific application, the paper thoroughly covers all the steps needed to design and verify guided wave structural health monitoring system, including methodology, digital modelling, reliability, and noise estimation for a correct decision-making process in a virtual environment. In particular, propagation characteristics of the fundamental anti-symmetric mode are derived experimentally on a real specimen to validate a variety of finite element models useful to investigate wave interaction with damage. Different signal processing techniques are demonstrated sensitive to defect and linearly dependent upon damage severity, showing promising reliability. Those features can be implemented in a probability-based diagnostic imaging in order to detect and localized impact induce damage. A multi-parameter approach is achieved by metrics fusion demonstrating increased capability in damage detection with promising implication in enhancing probability of detection.

Structural health monitoring is recognized as a viable solution to increase aviation safety and decrease operating costs enabling a novel maintenance approach based on the actual condition of the airframe, mitigating operating costs induced by scheduled inspections. However, the net benefit is hardly demonstrated, and it is still unclear how the implementation of such an autonomic system can affect performance at aircraft level. To close this gap, this paper presents a systematic analysis where the impact of cost and weight of integrating permanently attached sensors-used for diagnostics- affect the main performance of the aircraft. Through a multidisciplinary aircraft analysis framework, the increment of aircraft operating empty weight is compared with the possible benefits in terms of direct operating costs to identify a breakeven point. Furthermore, the analysis allows to establish a design guideline for structural health monitoring systems returning a safer aircraft without any economic penalties. The results show that the operating costs are lower than those of the reference aircraft up to 4% increase in maximum take-off weight. Paper findings suggest to considering a condition monitoring strategy from the conceptual design stage, since it could maximize the impact of such innovative technology. However, it involves in a design of a brand-new aircraft instead of a modification of an existing one.

In many industrial sectors, structural health monitoring (SHM) is considered as an addition to nondestructive testing (NDT) that can reduce maintenance effort during the lifetime of a technical facility, structural component, or vehicle. A large number of SHM methods are based on ultrasonic waves, whose properties change depending on structural health. However, the wide application of SHM systems is limited due to the lack of suitable methods to assess their reliability. The evaluation of the system performance usually refers to the determination of the probability of detection (POD) of a test procedure. Up until now, only a few limited methods exist to evaluate the POD of SHM systems, which prevents them from being standardized and widely accepted in the industry. The biggest hurdle concerning the POD calculation is the large number of samples needed. A POD analysis requires data from numerous identical structures with integrated SHM systems. Each structure is then damaged at different locations and with various degrees of severity. All of these are connected to high costs. Therefore, one possible way to tackle this problem is to perform computer-aided investigations. In this work, the POD assessment procedure established in NDT according to the Berens model is adapted to guided wave-based SHM systems. The approach implemented here is based on solely computer-aided investigations. After efficient modeling of wave propagation phenomena across an automotive component made of a carbon-fiber-reinforced composite, the POD curves are extracted. Finally, the novel concept of a POD map is introduced to look into the effect of damage position on system reliability.
