Titanium and its alloys are protected by a compact and stable passive film, which confers resistance to corrosion by the primary halogen chloride (Cl-) while being less effective against fluoride (F-). Although researchers have recognized different macroscopic corrosion effects of these halide ions on titanium, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this work, the bonding of Cl-/F- with stable passive films was studied in neutral and acidic (pH = 2.3) conditions. The synergistic effect between the interfacial hydrogen bond (HB) structure and halogens on titanium corrosion was first revealed using first-principles calculation and Raman spectroscopy. F- forms more stable halogen-Ti bonds than Cl-, resulting in titanium degradation. The proton combined with F- exhibits a specific synergistic effect, causing corrosion of the passive film. The water hydrogen bond transformation index (HBTI) at the titanium/aqueous interface was 1.88 in an acidic solution containing F-, significantly higher than that in neutral/acid solutions containing Cl- (1.80/1.81) and a neutral solution containing F- (1.81). This work clarifies the structure-activity relationship between HBTI and the destruction of titanium passive films. We propose that the microstructure of the interfacial HB is an undeniable factor in the corrosion of titanium.

The construction of p-n heterojunctions has become a widely adopted strategy for achieving the selective detection of reducing gases, including H2 and CO. Nevertheless, the elucidation of the gas selectivity mechanism at the nanoscale remains elusive. First-principle calculations provide an attractive avenue for comprehending the influence of coordination structures on gas-sensitive selectivity, thereby unveiling the structure-activity relationship of p-n heterojunction sites. In this study, we investigate the selective adsorption behavior of H2 and CO on a NiO-TiO2 heterojunction using density functional theory. The results of d-band center analysis confirm that the NiO-TiO2 heterojunction with adsorbed oxygen significantly enhances the adsorption stability of reducing gases. Intriguingly, our calculations reveal that H2 has a higher affinity for adsorbed oxygen on the heterojunction surface compared to that of CO, corresponding to a lower H2 adsorption energy. Density of states (DOS) results indicate that the NiO-TiO2 heterojunction, with preadsorbed oxygen, exhibits ultrahigh selectivity with an n-type gas-sensitive response to H2, effectively eliminating the cross-sensitivity observed with CO, as confirmed by gas-sensitive characterization research. The sensing mechanism of the NiO-TiO2 heterojunction's selective detection of H2 without interference from CO can be visually explained by electron transfer and potential barrier changes, paving the way for future developments in novel, selective gas-sensitive materials.

RESUMO

Matter manipulation in terahertz range calls for a strong-field broadband light source. Here, we present a scheme for intense terahertz generation from DSTMS crystal driven by a high power optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier. The generated terahertz energy is up to 175 µJ with a peak electric field of 17 MV/cm. The relationship between terahertz energy, conversion efficiency, and pump fluence is demonstrated. This study provides a powerful driving light source for strong-field terahertz pump-probe experimentation.

HYPOTHESIS: Unlike noble metals, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) behavior on Ti is more complicated due to its spontaneously formed oxide film. This film results in sluggish ORR kinetics and tends to be reduced within ORR potential region, causing the weak and multi-reaction coupled current. Though Ti is being used in chemical and biological fields, its ORR research is still underexplored. EXPERIMENTS: We innovatively employed the modified reactive tip generation-substrate collection (RTG/SC) mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with high efficiency of 97.2 % to quantitatively study the effects of film characteristics, solution environment (pH, anion, dissolved oxygen), and applied potential on the ORR activity and selectivity of Ti. Then, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) analyses were employed to elucidate its ORR behavior. FINDINGS: On highly reduced Ti, film properties dominate ORR behavior with promoted 4e- selectivity. Rapid film regeneration in alkaline/O2-saturated conditions inhibits ORR activity. Besides, ORR is sensitive to anion species in neutral solutions while showing enhanced 4e- reduction in alkaline media. All the improved 4e- selectivities originate from the hydrogen bond/electrostatic stabilization effect, while the decayed ORR activity by Cl- arises from the suppressed O2 adsorption. This work provides theoretical support and possible guidance for ORR research on oxide-covered metals.

Poor selectivity is a common problem faced by gas sensors. In particular, the contribution of each gas cannot be reasonably distributed when a binary mixture gas is co-adsorbed. In this paper, taking CO2 and N2 as an example, density functional theory is used to reveal the mechanism of selective adsorption of a transition metal (Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu)-decorated InN monolayer. The results show that Ni decoration can improve the conductivity of the InN monolayer while at the same time demonstrating an unexpected affinity for binding N2 instead of CO2. Compared with the pristine InN monolayer, the adsorption energies of N2 and CO2 on the Ni-decorated InN are dramatically increased from -0.1 to -1.93 eV and from -0.2 to -0.66 eV, respectively. Interestingly, for the first time, the density of states demonstrates that the Ni-decorated InN monolayer achieves a single electrical response to N2, eliminating the interference of CO2. Furthermore, the d-band center theory explains the advantage of Ni decorated in gas adsorption over Fe, Co, and Cu atoms. We also highlight the necessity of thermodynamic calculations in evaluating practical applications. Our theoretical results provide new insights and opportunities for exploring N2-sensitive materials with high selectivity.

Ion adsorption and hydrogen bond (HB) network reconstruction in electric double layer (EDL) have a profound impact on the interface properties. The microstructure in the bulk phase of 1.00-21.30 wt.% Na2SO3 aqueous solutions are investigated by X-ray scattering, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and classical molecular dynamics. The electronic properties of SO32- adsorption and the geometric structure of the HB network in the EDL at the titanium TiO2(101) surface are studied by density functional theory (DFT) and classical molecular dynamics. The SO32- strongly weakens the fully hydrogen-bonded water (FHW) and transforms it into partial hydrogen-bonded water (PHW). The HB transformation index (HBTI = PHW/FHW) shows a linear relationship with the mass fraction of Na2SO3. The TiOb-parallel adsorption configuration of SO32- enhances the ionicity of the Ob-Ti6 bond, resulting in the formation of oxygen vacancies at the titanium passive film surface. Besides, SO32- and Na+ are enriched and thermodynamic supersaturated in the inner Helmholtz layer (IHL), and the ions are diluted in the outer Helmholtz layer (OHL). The diffusion coefficient of SO32- and water molecules in EDL decreases seriously, which is easy to causes salt scaling on the surface of titanium passive film. This work provides evidence for the destruction of titanium passive film by SO32-.

The microstructure of a mixed KCl and K2SO4 aqueous solution was studied using X-ray scattering (XRS), Raman spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulation (MD). Reduced structure functions [F(Q)], reduced pair distribution functions [G(r)], Raman spectrum, and pair distribution functions (PDF) were obtained. The XRS results show that the main peak (r = 2.81 Å) of G(r) shifted to the right of the axis (r = 3.15 Å) with increased KCl and decreased K2SO4. The main peak was at r = 3.15 Å when the KCl concentration was 26.00% and the K2SO4 concentration was 0.00%. It is speculated that this phenomenon was caused by the main interaction changing, from K-OW (r = 2.80 Å) and OW-OW (r = 2.80 Å), to Cl−-OW (r = 3.14 Å) and K+-Cl− (r = 3.15 Å). According to the trend of the hydrogen bond structure in the Raman spectrum, when the concentration of KCl was high and K2SO4 was low, the destruction of the tetrahedral hydrogen bond network in the solution was more serious. This shows that the destruction strength of the anion to the hydrogen bond network structure in solution was Cl− > SO42−. In the MD simulations, the coordination number of OW-OW decreased with increasing KCl concentration, indicating that the tetrahedral hydrogen bond network was severely disrupted, which confirmed the results of the Raman spectroscopy. The hydration radius and coordination number of SO42− in the mixed solution were larger than Cl−, thus revealing the reason why the solubility of KCl in water was greater than that of K2SO4 at room temperature.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) is intractable, and spinal cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) are potential therapeutic targets for CINP. Previous studies demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) may contribute in alleviating specific peripheral neuropathic pain. However, neither CINP nor CBR have been clarified. We hypothesized that HBO2 is capable of alleviating CINP, and the effect could be explained by the activation of spinal CBRs. METHODS: A series of paclitaxel-induced CINP models were established on male Sprague-Dawley rats. Then HBO2 treatment was administered for seven consecutive days at 2.5 atmospheres absolute. Two groups were treated with AM251 (an antagonist of CBR type-1, CBR1) or AM630 (an antagonist of CBR type-2, CBR2) respectively 30 minutes before each HBO2 treatment. The mechanical withdrawal threshold was assessed before, during and at two weeks after HBO2 treatment. Lumbar spinal cords were collected for Western blot analysis of CBR1, CBR2, GFAP and CD11b, and ELISA analysis of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1ß and TNF-α. RESULTS: A mechanical allodynia was successfully exhibited and the spinal GFAP, CD11b, IL-1ß and TNF-α significantly increased after the modeling, and these effects could be further reversed by HBO2 treatment, which could be blocked by AM630, other than AM251. CONCLUSION: HBO2 treatment can alleviate paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain, and be mediated by CBR2. Spinal glial cells and proinflammatory cytokines are involved in this process.

The hydrogen bond network reconstruction at the titanium/water interface was monitored by Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the adsorption properties and the surface electron properties of hydrogen bond cluster (HBC) configurations were analyzed using adsorption energy, work function, Mulliken charge population, and density of states (DOS) by the first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT). Our results show that the hydrogen bond network of the aqueous solution is reconstructed under the interaction with the anatase TiO2(101) surface with the transformation of the chain and free hydrogen bonds to complex hydrogen bonds. The adsorption energy of a single water molecule and HBC on the anatase TiO2(101) surface are the lowest with the 1-DD-h (-0.851 eV) and 3-D-h-DDA (-1.048 eV) configurations, respectively. Over the long term, artificially regulating the structure of the HBC might be an effective and general way to slow down the metal anodic reaction without surface modification. Furthermore, the surface charge concentrates on the bridging oxygen atom, which will be the active site of the interface reaction. It is helpful to clarify the anodic corrosion reaction mechanism of the titanium spontaneous oxide film/water interface.

In this work, the effect of confined space on crystallization processes of pigments was investigated by using C.I. Pigment Red 146 (PR 146) as a model compound. The colloidal system (i.e., emulsion droplets) was used as a nanoreactor to prepare nanoscale PR 146 for the inkjet printer. The effects of the space confinement were investigated by comparing the products of PR 146 prepared from bulk solution, macroemulsion, and miniemulsion. The results showed that PR 146 crystallized in mini-emulsion had the narrowest particle size distribution and the average particle size can be as small as 172.5 nm, one order of magnitude smaller than the one obtained from the bulk solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed that PR 146 crystallized in all three solutions where the crystalline state and had similar crystallite sizes. The process mechanism of crystallization confined in the miniemulsion droplets was proposed and explained. The function mechanism of the co-stabilizer during the crystallization of PR 146 in emulsion was also explained. It was found that sodium chloride could counteract the pressure difference as an osmotic pressure agent and prevent the migrating of water from small droplets into big droplets. The influences of dosages of emulsifiers and co-stabilizers on droplet size and the size of the obtained PR 146 particles were evaluated and the optimal conditions were determined. Furthermore, the disparity of PR 146 products prepared by different methods was investigated by UV⁻Vis spectra. The aqueous dispersion of PR 146 crystallized in miniemulsion had the highest absorbance and darkest color.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease, and many factors are implicated in its progression. This work aims to study the preventive effects and the regulatory mechanism of low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMWF), which is obtained from Saccharina japonica, on the development of AS. Serum biochemical indices and pathological analyses were determined via ELISA, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Oil Red O staining. These results indicated that LMWF ameliorated areas with atherosclerotic lesions and had a significant antioxidant effect. Anticoagulant assays showed that LMWF might serve as a potential anticoagulation drug for inhibiting the formation of atherothrombosis. Double immunofluorescence staining illustrated that LMWF inhibited both SMC proliferation and migration and macrophage formation and differentiation. A molecular biology experiment showed that LMWF exhibited an apparent regulatory effect on various signaling pathways. In conclusion, our results revealed that LMWF mitigated AS in the ApoE (-/-) mouse model by activating multiple signal pathways.

Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors are considered ideal vehicles for human gene therapy. Meanwhile, non-viral strategies, such as transfection agents (TAs), have also shown promise to deliver genetic materials, such as siRNA. Transduction with the rAAV vector is performed concurrently with transfection with plasmid DNA or RNA. In the present study, we report that various TAs inhibited rAAV-mediated transgene expression at diverse levels. Overall, cationic polymers and dendrimers dramatically blocked rAAV transduction, while lipid-based liposomes displayed the least effect. The inhibitory effect was dependent on the dose of TAs and the timing of infection, suggesting that the early stages of viral infection were involved. In addition, the present results indicate that the transgene expression of rAAV vectors was significantly increased by liposome-mediated transfection with adenoviral helper genes. At the same time, this was dramatically inhibited by liposome-mediated transfection with the trichosanthin gene encoding a type I ribosome-inactivating protein isolated from traditional Chinese medicine. Furthermore, liposomes also have little effect on rAAV-mediated transgene expression in vivo. Taken together, these findings suggest liposome as the best choice of TAs, which should be used in combination with rAAV-mediated gene therapy.

Ginsenoside Rh1 is able to upregulate glucocorticoid receptor (GR) level, suggesting Rh1 may improve glucocorticoid efficacy in hormone-dependent diseases. Therefore, we investigated whether Rh1 could enhance the effect of dexamethasone (Dex) in the treatment of MRL/lpr mice. MRL/lpr mice were treated with vehicle, Dex, Rh1, or Dex + Rh1 for 4 weeks. Dex significantly reduced the proteinuria and anti-dsDNA and anti-ANA autoantibodies. The levels of proteinuria and anti-dsDNA and anti-ANA autoantibodies were further decreased in Dex + Rh1 group. Dex, Rh1, or Dex + Rh1 did not alter the proportion of CD4+ splenic lymphocytes, whereas the proportion of CD8+ splenic lymphocytes was significantly increased in Dex and Dex + Rh1 groups. Dex + Rh1 significantly decreased the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ splenic lymphocytes compared with control. Con A-induced CD4+ splenic lymphocytes proliferation was increased in Dex-treated mice and was inhibited in Dex + Rh1-treated mice. Th1 cytokine IFN-γ mRNA was suppressed and Th2 cytokine IL-4 mRNA was increased by Dex. The effect of Dex on IFN-γ and IL-4 mRNA was enhanced by Rh1. In conclusion, our data suggest that Rh1 may enhance the effect of Dex in the treatment of MRL/lpr mice through regulating CD4+ T cells activation and Th1/Th2 balance.

GANODERMA LUCIDU: spore (GLS), an over-the-counter herbal supplement, is widely used by cancer patients in China. Although preclinical studies have shown it to be safe, complete safety data on GLS is still lacking. In this article, we report 5 cases of gastrointestinal cancer that were treated with GLS plus multiple strategies between 2010 and 2011. These patients presented with increased levels of the serum tumor marker CA72-4, one of the most valuable markers for monitoring therapeutic response in patients receiving gastrointestinal cancer treatment, after oral ingestion of GLS twice a day for 1 or 2 months. Interestingly, CA72-4 rapidly returned to normal levels when the patients discontinued the supplement and no change in clinical symptoms accompanied the CA72-4 surge. Taking into consideration that the underlying mechanism of this reaction is obscure, we suggest that additional studies are urgently needed and GLS be used with caution in cancer patients.

Long-term complete regression of prostate cancer (PCa) is a rare phenomenon. The current report presents the case of an advanced PCa patient with rare clinical features. Following the generation of a definitive diagnosis, the patient was administered with flutamide treatment (0.25 g flutamide) 3 times a day, for 5 consecutive years, prior to surgical castration. Following surgery, 3.75 mg enantone was injected (i.h.) once per month for 3 months, without suspending the flutamide treatment. In addition, traditional Chinese herbal medicine was administrated immediately following surgery. Strontium-89 radiotherapy was performed for multiple bone metastases, and the multiple metastatic lesions (lung and bone) of the individual disappeared in <7 months. The patient has currently survived for >10 years with no development of castration resistance or signs of recurrence. Nadir prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels had remained at <0.1 ng/ml following the initial treatment, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) value was high and had been observed to fluctuate during the treatment. The present case report considers the role of the androgen-receptor in PCa and indicates that careful interpretation of nadir PSA and ESR levels may aid in the prediction of patient prognosis.

It is known that interleukin-17 (IL-17) is associated with autoimmune disorders and that peripheral IL-17 plays a role in arthritis and neuropathic pain. The present study investigated the possibility of spinal cell expression of IL-17 during inflammatory pain and possible IL-17 involvement in such pain. Hyperalgesia was induced by injecting complete Freund adjuvant (CFA, 0.08mL, 40µg Mycobacterium tuberculosis) into one hind paw of the rat. Paw withdrawal latency (PWL) was tested before (-48h) and 2 and 24h after CFA injection to assess hyperalgesia. IL-17 antibody (0.2-2µg/rat) was given intrathecally (i.t.) 24h before CFA to block the action of basal IL-17 and 2h before each of 2 PWL tests to block CFA-induced IL-17. I.t. recombinant IL-17 (10-400ng per rat) was administered to naive rats to determine its effects on PWL and phosphorylated NR1 (p-NR1). p-NR1 modulates N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) activity to facilitate pain. Spinal cords were removed for IL-17 immunostaining, double immunostaining of IL-17/cell markers and IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA)/NR1, for Western blot testing of IL-17, p-NR1, IL-17RA, and GFAP, for in situ IL-17RA hybridization, and for real time polymerase chain reaction of IL-17RA. The data reveal that IL-17 is up-regulated in activated and nonactivated astrocytes; that IL-17RA is localized in NR1-immunoreactive neurons and up-regulated; and that IL-17 antibody at 2µg/rat significantly increased PWL (P<.05) and decreased p-NR1 and IL-17RA compared to control in CFA- and IL-17-injected rats. The results suggest that spinal IL-17 is produced by astrocytes and enhances p-NR1 to facilitate pain.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are usually located in the trunk, extremities, head, or neck, and most occur with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1; von Recklinghausen's disease). No biomarkers have previously been found to be associated with their progression. Retroperitoneal NF1-independent MPNSTs are rare; they are considered to be less aggressive and to have better prognoses compared to NF1-related tumors. Currently, en bloc excision is the only consensus treatment approach. In a 27-year-old male with a giant retroperitoneal MPNST and no stigmata or family history of neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1), a remarkable elevation of serum CA125 was detected. The high-grade tumor displayed a striking progression: the primary lesion, 25 cm in diameter, recurred in its previous site as a 17-cm MPNST less than 50 days after total excision. Subsequent treatment with microwave ablation and huachansu, a traditional Chinese medication, proved ineffective, and the patient died within 3 months. Our case suggests that retroperitoneal MPNSTs can deteriorate rapidly even if NF1 independent, that aggressive treatment may not benefit large high-grade MPNSTs, and that novel and effective treatment is urgently needed. Our case also suggests the possibility of using serum tumor markers in the early detection and monitoring of MPNSTs.
