RESUMO

Imposter Phenomenon (IP) was coined in 1978 by Clance and Imes and has been an important construct in explaining individuals' experiences of believing that achievements are a result of luck or misperceptions of others rather than personal competence. The Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale (CIPS), developed in 1985, is a prominent operationalization of this construct. Although this scale has been widely used since its inception, its factor structure has been inconsistent across studies and no tests of measurement invariance are documented in the literature. Using a large university sample (n = 830), the current study was designed to: (a) examine the factor structure of the CIPS using cross validation, (b) examine measurement invariance across gender, and (c) examine differences in the CIPS factor by demographics. We found that a single factor structure for the CIPS was the best fitting model. We also found that the measure achieved invariance across gender after removing item 18 (and in the absence of items 1, 2, and 19, removed for poor fit). Finally, we found that being single, a woman, and having experienced lower socioeconomic status (SES) were all associated with higher IP. We discuss these findings in the context of a university setting and suggest avenues for future research.

With increasing demand for psychotherapy services, clinicians are carrying increasingly large caseloads (Bailey et al., 2020). As the number of new intakes exceeds the number of clinical hours available each week in some settings, psychotherapy is delivered on an attenuated schedule for returning clients (rather than the traditional weekly frequency); there is, however, little support for the efficacy of this practice. The present study explored the effect of session frequency on psychotherapy outcomes using a quasi-randomized controlled design. In a working university counseling center, we assigned therapists to either a treatment-as-usual (TAU) group (attenuated session frequency) or an experimental group (weekly session frequency). Clients were randomly assigned to a therapist in either condition. Using hierarchical linear modeling and survival analyses, we examined psychotherapy outcomes (measured by session-by-session Outcome Questionnaire 45 scores) for 1,322 clients (3,919 individual sessions). We found no differences between groups when examining the full sample, but also found limited fidelity in the experimental group. When identifying individuals who were seen weekly in at least the first three sessions after intake (sensitivity analysis), we found the following: (a) weekly therapy resulted in faster trajectories of change over time, (b) weekly therapy resulted in a greater likelihood of achieving recovery, and (c) weekly therapy resulted in a greater likelihood of achieving recovery sooner. We discuss the importance of including session frequency when considering the dose of therapy, as well as the implication that prioritizing weekly therapy may increase therapy efficacy and efficiency in routine practice. The aim of this study was to examine trajectories of pathological video game symptoms over a 6-year period from adolescence to emerging adulthood. We also examined a number of predictors and outcomes for different trajectories. Participants included 385 adolescents (M age = 15.01 at the initial time point) who completed multiple questionnaires once a year over a 6-year period. Analyses showed there were 3 distinct trajectories. Approximately 10% of adolescents (called "increasing symptoms") showed moderate levels of pathological gaming symptoms at the initial time point and then increases in symptoms over time. Conversely, 18% of adolescents (called "moderate symptoms") started with moderate symptoms that did not change over time. Finally, 72% of adolescents (called "nonpathological") were relatively low in symptoms across the 6 years of data collection. Being male predicted both the increasing and moderate groups. The increasing group tended to show the worst outcomes over time, with higher levels of depression, aggression, shyness, problematic cell phone use, and anxiety than the nonpathological group, even when controlling for initial levels of many of these variables. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between youth motivation and psychotherapy outcomes in routine community mental health settings. METHOD: One hundred fifty youth, ages 12-17, from three community mental health clinics completed the Youth Outcome Questionnaire and Treatment Support Measure at frequent intervals over the course of treatment. RESULTS: Increases in motivation followed a curvilinear trajectory. On average, youth motivation significantly increased over the course of therapy according to both self- and parent reports (p < .001). The slope for youth motivation over the course of therapy was negatively associated with the slope for mental health symptoms (p < .001). Initial youth motivation did not predict overall change or the rate of change in symptoms. However, there was significant individual variability in patterns of youth motivation. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that youth show increases in motivation over the course of therapy with most gains occurring in the first few sessions. Because increases in motivation over the course of therapy were related to decreases in mental health symptoms, further research is needed to examine how treatment interventions or other factors such as parent motivation may moderate this relationship. Additional research examining the likely complex relationship between initial youth motivation and treatment outcomes in community mental health settings is needed.
