RESUMO

The clinical, gross necropsy, and histopathology findings in two unrelated desert grassland whiptail lizards (Cnemidophorus uniparens) with teratoma are described. The desert grassland whiptail is a parthenogenic lizard species with a polyploid chromosomal complement. The chromosome composition of the teratomas from these lizards was not determined.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To report the occurrence of medullary bone infarction in both femoral canals after bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) and the subsequent unilateral development of an osteosarcoma at the site of bone infarction. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report. ANIMAL POPULATION: An 8-month-old neutered male Samoyed dog. METHODS: Serial physical and radiographic examinations performed at 1, 2, 3, and 5 years after THA. Bone biopsy specimens of the right distal femoral metaphysis were taken 5 years after THA, and a complete necropsy was performed at the time of euthanasia. RESULTS: Bilateral medullary bone infarction was visible in the femoral canals 1 year after THA and remained visible on subsequent evaluations. An osteosarcoma developed in the right distal femoral metaphysis at the site of infarction, 5 years after THA, and was found to have metastasized widely throughout the body. CONCLUSION: Bone infarction may occur in the femoral canal after canine THA. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Bone infarction may be a predisposing factor for the development of osteosarcoma in the femora of dogs with THAs.

RESUMO

An adult Moluccan cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) was diagnosed with a cystadenocarcinoma in the right axillary region that was treated symptomatically with surgical debulking and periodic drainage. The bird eventually died and a necropsy was performed. The neoplasm extended through the humerus, and small neoplastic foci were seen within the ipsilateral lung parenchyma. Rare groupings of microvilli were observed lining intercellular canalicular lumens on electron microscopy within the axillary tumor. These findings suggest a respiratory neoplasm, although the tissue of origin remained undetermined.

RESUMO

Various models for sensory coding have used statistical approaches based on the assumption that the stimulus intensity parameter is represented in the afferent neurons as mean firing frequency. In this paper we question the assumption that this is the only code for intensity. We show that in lobster olfactory receptors narrowly tuned to hydroxyproline, an across-fiber pattern (AFP) code distinguished more concentration levels over a 5 log step range than a response magnitude code and, unlike the latter, was unaffected by response summation time. AFP discrimination of stimulus intensity appears to be based on high inter-cell response variability and low intra-cell response variability.
