RESUMO

Fully aliphatic segmented poly(ether ester amide) copolymers with uniform hard segments prepared by melt polycondensation of α,ω-hydroxyl end-functionalized polytetrahydrofuran and short glycine or ß-alanine bisester-bisoxalamide units hold promise for biomedical applications. For polymers with the hard block contents varying from 10% to 27%, differential scanning calorimetry and atomic force microscopy reveal a highly phase-separated morphology, with ribbon-like nanocrystals dispersed in the soft segment matrix. To relate the polymer properties to the structure of the hard segment, the monomers were prepared and studied by optical and X-ray diffraction measurements. It was shown that the glycine and ß-alanine carbonyl ester groups are tilted away from the oxalamide plane, which can affect the degradation rate via hydrolysis of the ester bond.

RESUMO

Branching has a strong influence on the processability and properties of polymers. However, the accurate characterization of branched polymers is genuinely difficult. Branched molecules of a certain molecular weight exhibit the same hydrodynamic volumes as linear molecules of substantially lower weights. Therefore, separation by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), will result in the co-elution of molecules with different molecular weights and branching characteristics. Chromatographic separation of the polymer molecules in sub-microm channels, known as molecular-topology fractionation (MTF), may provide a better separation based on topological differences among sample molecules. MTF elution volumes depend on both the topology and molar mass. Therefore co-elution of branched molecules with linear molecules of lower molar mass may also occur in this separation. Because SEC and MTF exhibit significantly different selectivity, the best and clearest separations can be achieved by combining the two techniques in a comprehensive two-dimensional (MTFxSEC) separation system. In this work such a system has been used to demonstrate branching-selective separations of star branched polymers and of randomly long-chain-branched polymers. Star-shaped polymers were separated from linear polymers above a column-dependent molecular weight or size.

RESUMO

High temperature asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (HTAF4) coupled to infrared (IR), multi-angle light scattering (MALS), and viscometry (Visc) detection is introduced as a tool for the characterization of high molecular weight polyethylenes. The high molecular weight fraction strongly affects the rheological behaviour and processability of polyethylene materials and can often not be accurately resolved by current technology such as high temperature size-exclusion chromatography (HTSEC). Molecular weight (M), radius of gyration (Rg), and intrinsic viscosity [eta] of linear high density polyethylene (HDPE) and branched low density polyethylene (LDPE) samples are studied in detail by HTAF4 and are compared to HTSEC. HTAF4 showed a better separation and mass recovery than HTSEC for very high molecular weight fractions in HDPE and LDPE samples. As no stationary phase is present in an HTAF4 channel, the technique does not show the typical drawbacks associated with HTSEC analysis of high molecular weight polyethylenes, such as, exclusion effects, shear degradation, and anomalous late elution of highly branched material. HTAF4 is applied to study the relation between the molecular weight and the zero shear viscosity eta0 for high molecular weight HDPE. It was found that the zero shear viscosity values predicted from HTAF4 results are in good qualitative agreement with measured values obtained from dynamic mechanical spectroscopy (DMS) experiments, whereas eta0 values predicted from HTSEC do not show a strong correlation. The low molecular weight cutoff of HTAF4 is approximately 5x10(4) as a result of relatively large pores in the HTAF4 channel membrane. HTAF4 is, therefore, currently not suited to analyze low molecular weight materials.
