RESUMO

PURPOSE: the development of a cost-effective diagnostic system for transmitting high-resolution images on normal phone lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 486 PC with super VGA screen, 16,800-band external modem and graphic software. RESULTS: the graphic software allows the PC to be connected to the video output of MRI, CT or US units, or to a video camera as in the case of X-ray units. Image spatial resolution is as high as 1,024 x 768 lines. Transmission times are lower than 45 seconds, corresponding to files of 50-80 kbytes. In 6 months, more than 130 Megabytes (500 images) were transmitted between our diagnostic center and our consultants in northern Italy, France and California. CONCLUSIONS: this cost-effective teleradiology system allows real-time image transmissions between diagnostic centers all over the world for scientific updating and quick reference purposes. Portable units can be developed.

RESUMO

A case of pleural mesothelioma spread by its contiguity with the left retrocavitary region causing pain in the homolateral half of the abdomen is described in a subject who had received a rib injury several months earlier. Instrumental examinations revealed pleural lesions with effusion and a left paravertebral mass.

RESUMO

Between November 1986 and july 1987 162 women and 8 men attending the outpatient senological department of Infermi Hospital, Biella were examined by means of anamnesis, clinical examination senography and echography. The results of this study are reported and compared with data in the literature. In line with the Moskowitz distinction, they confirm the greater reliability of senography for the detection (identification) of the lesion and the extreme usefulness of US for the diagnosis (characterization) of the lesion itself.

RESUMO

A morphological CT study in Poland syndrome is presented. The osteomuscular anomalies of the chest, which are not demonstrated by usual x-Ray, are well defined by CT scans. The usefulness of CT in postoperative controls of muscles transfers is stressed.

RESUMO

The therapeutic use of computerised tomography (CAT) and echography (ECT) includes guided percutaneous drainage of abdominal abscesses. The indications, method and results are described. As widely reported in the literature in recent years the results appear promising. The advantages of the technique over the traditional surgical technique are also emphasised.

RESUMO

Among diagnostic techniques proposed for the study of obstructive jaundice, the initial use of echotomography clearly distinguishes between medical and surgical forms. If surgery is not indicated, further diagnostic investigations, (transhepatic percutaneous cholangiography followed if necessary by drainage of the bile duct) are conducted. Used in conjunction, echography and TPC will solve clinical doubts in most cases.

RESUMO

Thirteen patients with diffuse ileojejunitis have been diagnosed and treated by us over the past ten years. The disease bears close resemblance to Crohn's disease and may represent a variant of it. No clearcut relationship to celiac sprue was observed in this group of patients. Therapeutic success was obtained in the majority of patients treated with the anti-inflammatory drugs, sulfasalazine and steroids, with four patients requiring resectional surgery, all others manageable by nonsurgical means. There was no mortality in this series of patients.

RESUMO

Data regarding the commonest biohumoral tests of liver function obtained in 53 highly obese women of more or less young age, non-diabetic, non alcolist and without cardiovascular complications are reported. Liver biopsy was carried out in 23 of these patients for the purpose of studying the liver histologically. On the whole, liver function tests gave normal results: specifically, B.S.F. clearance was normal in 91% of the cases and retention at 45' was normal in 77%. Histologically, only 9% showed normal liver parenchyma. The vast majority showed a varying extent of fat infiltration and in 30% this was also fibrosis. No relationship was found to exist between the extent of histological changes and B.S.F clearance and retention values.
