RESUMO

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of different brands of immunochromatographic test (ICT) reagents for Chlamydia trachomatis using homogenized samples to provide a reference for reagent quality control. Methods: Eight commercially available ICT reagents were evaluated, of which three used the latex method and five used the colloidal gold method. Analytical performance evaluation using a pure culture broth of C. trachomatis, as well as clinical application validation using cervical epithelial cell samples acquired from the research subjects, were conducted. The concentration of C. trachomatis was quantified using a nucleic acid amplification test. Results: The limit of detection (LOD) of different ICT reagents in the analytical performance evaluation varied from 9.5 × 103 to 1 × 105 IFU/mL, and only one reagent met the LOD specified in the manufacturer's instructions. Likewise, only one reagent in the clinical application validation achieved the analytical LOD, four reagents were 2.1-4.2-fold of the analytical LODs, and three reagents failed to detect positive results in clinical samples. Conclusions: The diagnostic performance of different methods and different brands of ICT reagents in clinical practice was different from the manufacturer's instructions and the results of laboratory evaluation. The diagnostic performance of reagents should be evaluated before they are actually used in clinical practice.

RESUMO

We established a protocol for the traditional Korean medicine examination (KME) and methodically gathered data following this protocol. Potential indicators for KME were extracted through a literature review; the first KME protocol was developed based on three rounds of expert opinions. The first KME protocol's feasibility was confirmed, and data were collected over four years from traditional Korean medicine (KM) hospitals, focusing on healthy adults, using the final KME protocol. A literature review identified 175 potential core indicators, condensed into 73 indicators after three rounds of expert consultation. The first KME protocol, which was categorized under questionnaires and medical examinations, was developed after the third round of expert opinions. A pilot study using the first KME protocol was conducted to ensure its validity, leading to modifications resulting in the development of the final KME protocol. Over four years, data were collected from six KM hospitals, focusing on healthy adults; we obtained a dataset comprising 11,036 healthy adults. This is the first protocol incorporating core indicators of KME in a quantitative form and systematically collecting data. Our protocol holds potential merit in evaluating predisposition to diseases or predicting diseases.

RESUMO

Metabolic rate has been used in thermophysiological models for predicting the thermal response of humans. However, only a few studies have investigated the association between an individual's trait-like thermal sensitivity and resting energy expenditure (REE), which resulted in inconsistent results. This study aimed to explore the association between REE and perceived thermal sensitivity. The REE of healthy adults was measured using an indirect calorimeter, and perceived thermal intolerance and sensation in the body were evaluated using a self-administered questionnaire. In total, 1567 individuals were included in the analysis (women = 68.9%, age = 41.1 ±â€…13.2 years, body mass index = 23.3 ±â€…3.3 kg/m2, REE = 1532.1 ±â€…362.4 kcal/d). More women had high cold intolerance (31.8%) than men (12.7%), and more men had high heat intolerance (23.6%) than women (16.1%). In contrast, more women experienced both cold (53.8%) and heat (40.6%) sensations in the body than men (cold, 29.1%; heat, 27.9%). After adjusting for age, fat-free mass, and fat mass, lower cold intolerance, higher heat intolerance, and heat sensation were associated with increased REE only in men (cold intolerance, P for trend = .001; heat intolerance, P for trend = .037; heat sensation, P = .046), whereas cold sensation was associated with decreased REE only in women (P = .023). These findings suggest a link between the perceived thermal sensitivity and REE levels in healthy individuals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: China has piloted Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) to address increasing care demand. However, many cities neglected adjusting LTCI premiums since the pilot, risking the long-term sustainability of LTCI. Therefore, using Zhejiang Province as a case, this study simulated mortality-adjusted long-term care demand and the balance of LTCI funds through dynamic financing mechanism under diverse life expectancy and disability scenarios. METHODS: Three-parameter log-quadratic model was used to estimate the mortality from 1990 to 2020. Mortality with predicted interval from 2020 to 2080 was projected by Lee-Carter method extended with rotation. Cohort-component projection model was used to simulate the number of older population with different degrees of disability. Disability data of the older people is sourced from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2018. The balance of LTCI fund was simulated by dynamic financing actuarial model. RESULTS: Life expectancy of Zhejiang for male (female) is from 80.46 (84.66) years in 2020 to 89.39 [86.61, 91.74] (91.24 [88.90, 93.25]) years in 2080. The number of long-term care demand with severe disability in Zhejiang demonstrates an increasing trend from 285 [276, 295] thousand in 2023 to 1027 [634, 1657] thousand in 2080 under predicted mean of life expectancy. LTCI fund in Zhejiang will become accumulated surplus from 2024 to 2080 when annual premium growth rate is 5.25% [4.20%, 6.25%] under various disability scenarios, which is much higher than the annual growth of unit cost of long-term care services (2.25%). The accumulated balance of LTCI fund is sensitive with life expectancy. CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic growth of LTCI premium is essential in dealing with current deficit around 2050 and realizing Zhejiang's LTCI sustainability in the long-run. The importance of dynamic monitoring disability and mortality information is emphasized to respond immediately to the increase of premiums. LTCI should strike a balance between expanding coverage and controlling financing scale. This study provides implications for developing countries to establish or pilot LTCI schemes.

RESUMO

Developing electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices (e.g., water splitting, regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries) driven by intermittent renewable energy sources holds a great potential to facilitate global energy transition and alleviate the associated environmental issues. However, the involved kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely limits the entire reaction efficiency, thus designing high-performance materials toward efficient OER is of prime significance to remove this obstacle. Among various materials, cost-effective perovskite oxides have drawn particular attention due to their desirable catalytic activity, excellent stability and large reserves. To date, substantial efforts have been dedicated with varying degrees of success to promoting OER on perovskite oxides, which have generated multiple reviews from various perspectives, e.g., electronic structure modulation and heteroatom doping and various applications. Nonetheless, the reviews that comprehensively and systematically focus on the latest intellectual design strategies of perovskite oxides toward efficient OER are quite limited. To bridge the gap, this review thus emphatically concentrates on this very topic with broader coverages, more comparative discussions and deeper insights into the synthetic modulation, doping, surface engineering, structure mutation and hybrids. More specifically, this review elucidates, in details, the underlying causality between the being-tuned physiochemical properties [e.g., electronic structure, metal-oxygen (M-O) bonding configuration, adsorption capacity of oxygenated species and electrical conductivity] of the intellectually designed perovskite oxides and the resulting OER performances, coupled with perspectives and potential challenges on future research. It is our sincere hope for this review to provide the scientific community with more insights for developing advanced perovskite oxides with high OER catalytic efficiency and further stimulate more exciting applications.

RESUMO

Understanding individuals' long-term care preferences is essential to the provision of person-centered care. This study aims to describe the preferences for long-term care settings and investigates sociocultural factors associated with long-term care preferences among older Chinese adults. Responses from 22,112 older adults aged 60 years or above were analyzed using multinomial logistic regression. Four ideal long-term care settings were identified: in-home care, community day care, institutional care, and undecided long-term care arrangements. The study found that the majority of participants desired to age in place at home, regardless of their health status and social support conditions. Therefore, research and advocacy efforts are needed to inform policymakers to strategically develop home-based long-term care supports in China.

Besides needs, social means and values are crucial to long-term care preferences among older Chinese adults.Among different long-term care options, the vast majority of the participants (82%) preferred aging in place in a home setting.China's long-term care policy should prioritize the support for developing home-based services.

RESUMO

Introduction: Integrative Korean medicine treatment (IKM), including herbal medicine (HM) and acupuncture, has been widely used for obesity and overweight in children and adolescents in South Korea. We investigated the real-world usage status and the potential effect of the IKM for obesity and overweight in children and adolescents. Methods: Multicenter medical charts were retrospectively reviewed of obese and overweight children and adolescents who visited Korean medicine institutions with the goal of weight control for the first time and received IKM, to analyze the usage status and effect of IKM. We defined IKM responders as those with an improved obesity grade on the body mass index (BMI) percentile and analyzed their characteristics. Results: Medical charts of 209 patients (183 obese and 26 overweight) with a mean age of 11.45 years were examined. Patients visited the institution a mean of 5.95 times, and HM alone and HM plus acupuncture were frequently used IKM. HM was prescribed to 205 patients, 167 of whom received an HM prescription containing Ephedrae Herba. An HM of the decoction type was prescribed to 189 patients, and the average treatment duration was 76.54 days. After IKM, the percentile and z-score of BMI and weight significantly declined and height percentile and z-score were significantly enhanced, without serious adverse events. In the IKM responders, age, and the proportion of girls and overweight were significantly higher, and the percentile and z-score of height, weight, and BMI were significantly lower. Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the real-world usage of IKM for obesity and overweight in children and adolescents. A significant improvement in obesity-related outcome measures after IKM, illustrated the potential effect of IKM.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Liraglutide is a commonly used hypoglycemic agent in clinical practice, and has been demonstrated to have protective effects against the development of cardiovascular disease. However, its potential role in myocardial fibrosis remains unexplored. The present study aims to assess the impact of liraglutide on the activation of cardiac fibroblasts. METHODS: Primary rat adult fibroblasts were isolated, cultured, and randomly allocated into 4 groups: control group, transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFß1) stimulation group, liraglutide group, and TGFß1+liraglutide group. Fibroblast activation was induced by TGFß1. Cell proliferation activity was assessed using the CKK-8 kit, and cellular activity was determined using the MTT kit. Reverse transcrition-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was utilized to quantify the level of collagen transcription, immunofluorescence staining was performed to detect the expression level of type III collagen and α-smooth muscle protein (α-SMA), and immunoblotting was conducted to monitor alterations in signal pathways. RESULTS: The addition of 10, 25, 50 and 100 nmol/L of liraglutide did not induce any significant impact on the viability of fibroblasts (P>0.05). The rate of cellular proliferation was significantly higher in the TGFßl stimulation group than in the control group. However, the treatment with 50 and 100 nmol/L of liraglutide resulted in the reduction of TGFßl-induced cell proliferation (P<0.05). The RT-qPCR results revealed that the transcription levels of type I collagen, type III collagen, and α-SMA were significantly upregulated in the TGFßl stimulation group, when compared to the control group (P<0.05). However, the expression levels of these aforementioned factors significantly decreased in the TGFßl+liraglutide group (P<0.05). The immunofluorescence staining results revealed a significant increase in the expression levels of type III collagen and α-SMA in the TGFßl stimulation group, when compared to the control group (P<0.05). However, these expression levels significantly decreased in the TGFßl+liraglutide group, when compared to the TGFßl stimulation group (P<0.05). The Western blotting results revealed that the expression levels of phosphorylated smad2 and smad3 significantly increased in the TGFßl stimulation group, when compared to the control group (P<0.05), while these decreased in the TGFßl+liraglutide group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Liraglutide inhibits myocardial fibrosis development by suppressing the smad signaling pathway, reducing the activation and secretion of cardiac fibroblasts.

RESUMO

Background/Aims: Flagellin, which is abundant in gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas, is reported to influence on inflammatory responses in various lung diseases. However, its effect on airway epithelial cells in contribution to asthma pathogenesis is not elucidated yet. We aimed to investigate the effect of TLR5 ligand flagellin on the transcriptomic profile of primary human epithelial cells and to determine the markers of airway inflammation. Methods: Normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells were grown and differentiated in air-liquid interface (ALI) culture for 14-16 days. The cells were treated with flagellin in vitro at 10 and 100 ng/ml for 3 and 24 h. The conditioned media and cells were harvested to validate inflammatory markers involved in airway inflammation using ELISA, Western blot, and quantitative PCR methods. RNA-sequencing was performed to investigate the transcriptional response to flagellin in ALI-NHBE cells. Results: Altered transcriptional responses to flagellin in differentiated bronchial epithelial cells were determined, including genes encoding chemokines, matrix metalloproteinases, and antimicrobial biomolecules. Pathway analysis of the transcriptionally responsive genes revealed enrichment of signaling pathways. Flagellin induced the mRNA expressions of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and secretion of GM-CSF, CXCL5, CCL5 and CXCL10. Flagellin enhanced the protein expression of MMP-13 in TGF-ß1 and TGF-ß2 pretreated cell lysates and Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. Conclusions: These findings suggest that flagellin could be a potent inducer of inflammatory markers that may contribute to airway inflammation and remodeling.

RESUMO

This study aimed to elucidate the effect and underlying mechanism of Bovis Calculus in the treatment of ulcerative colitis(UC) through network pharmacological prediction and animal experimental verification. Databases such as BATMAN-TCM were used to mine the potential targets of Bovis Calculus against UC, and the pathway enrichment analysis was conducted. Seventy healthy C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into a blank group, a model group, a solvent model(2% polysorbate 80) group, a salazosulfapyridine(SASP, 0.40 g·kg~(-1)) group, and high-, medium-, and low-dose Bovis Calculus Sativus(BCS, 0.20, 0.10, and 0.05 g·kg~(-1)) groups according to the body weight. The UC model was established in mice by drinking 3% dextran sulfate sodium(DSS) solution for 7 days. The mice in the groups with drug intervention received corresponding drugs for 3 days before modeling by gavage, and continued to take drugs for 7 days while modeling(continuous administration for 10 days). During the experiment, the body weight of mice was observed, and the disease activity index(DAI) score was recorded. After 7 days of modeling, the colon length was mea-sured, and the pathological changes in colon tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß), interleukin-6(IL-6), and interleukin-17(IL-17) in colon tissues of mice were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). The mRNA expression of IL-17, IL-17RA, Act1, TRAF2, TRAF5, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL10 was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). The protein expression of IL-17, IL-17RA, Act1, p-p38 MAPK, and p-ERK1/2 was investigated by Western blot. The results of network pharmacological prediction showed that Bovis Calculus might play a therapeutic role through the IL-17 signaling pathway and the TNF signaling pathway. As revealed by the results of animal experiments, on the 10th day of drug administration, compared with the solvent model group, all the BCS groups showed significantly increased body weight, decreased DAI score, increased colon length, improved pathological damage of colon mucosa, and significantly inhibited expression of TNF-α,IL-6,IL-1ß, and IL-17 in colon tissues. The high-dose BCS(0.20 g·kg~(-1)) could significantly reduce the mRNA expression levels of IL-17, Act1, TRAF2, TRAF5, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, CXCL1, and CXCL2 in colon tissues of UC model mice, tend to down-regulate mRNA expression levels of IL-17RA and CXCL10, significantly inhibit the protein expression of IL-17RA,Act1,and p-ERK1/2, and tend to decrease the protein expression of IL-17 and p-p38 MAPK. This study, for the first time from the whole-organ-tissue-molecular level, reveals that BCS may reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines by inhibiting the IL-17/IL-17RA/Act1 signaling pathway, thereby improving the inflammatory injury of colon tissues in DSS-induced UC mice and exerting the effect of clearing heat and removing toxins.

RESUMO

Objectives: Herbal medicine (HM) is widely used to treat obesity in adolescents worldwide since the currently available interventions have low compliance and lack long-term effects and safety data. This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting HM use for weight loss in overweight and obese adolescents. Methods: A total of 46,336 adolescents were included in this cross-sectional study based on the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. Three models of HM use for weigh loss were developed by sequentially adding predisposing, enabling, and need factors according to Andersen's model using multiple logistic regression analyses considering the complex sampling design. Results: Male and female high school students and students from low perceived household economic status were less likely to use HM for weight loss. Students whose fathers had a college degree or higher, depressed mood, and two or more chronic allergic diseases were more likely to use HM. Male students who perceived their body image as fat or very fat tended to use HM less than those who perceived their body image as very thin, thin, or moderate. Obese female students tended to use HM more than overweight female students. Conclusion: These results can be used as the bases to promote HM use, provide ideas for future research, and strengthen the health insurance coverage extension for weight loss interventions.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Paris polyphylla Sm. (P.P), is a widely-used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the treatment of wound, throat sores and snakebites. Furthermore, P.P was recorded as an anti-inflammatory drug by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. AIM OF THE STUDY: We sought to decipher the anti-inflammatory effect of P.P on ulcerative colitis (UC); specifically, to explore whether P.P attenuates colitis by restoring the regulatory T cells (Tregs) and T helper 17 (Th17) cells balance and its mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We treated experimental colitis mice with extracts of Paris polyphylla (EPP). The percentage of Tregs and Th17 cells were measured using flow cytometry, and their secreted cytokines levels were evaluated employing ELISA. The expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) in colon tissues was detected using immunofluorescence. Furthermore, GW9662, a PPAR-γ antagonist, was used to validate the mechanism of EPP in restoring the Treg/Th17 balance. RESULTS: The EPP effectively alleviated the clinical symptoms and inflammatory cytokine levels in mice with colitis. EPP treatment also restored the impaired Treg/Th17 balance in mice. Furthermore, EPP treatment promoted PPAR-γ expression and reduced HIF-1α and p-STAT3 expression in colon tissues, whereas PPAR-γ inhibition blocked the effects of EPP in mice models. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that EPP exhibit excellent anti-inflammatory properties via restoring PPAR-γ/STAT3/HIF-1α axis-mediated Treg/Th17 balance in colitis mice. Hence, P. polyphylla is a promising medicinal plant-based alternative for managing colitis that requires further clinical validation.

RESUMO

Background: The widespread occurrence of syphilis remains a global public health problem. Although penicillin has been recommended as the first-line therapy for syphilis for more than 70 years, treatment failure occurs in 10-20% of patients with early syphilis. Recent studies have reported varied single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Treponema pallidum related to penicillin resistance. The clinical relevance of these SNPs to treatment failure in patients with early syphilis is unresolved. In this work, a protocol is developed to evaluate the association between treatment failure in patients with early syphilis and penicillin resistance-related gene mutations of T. pallidum. Methods: A multicentre nested case-control study is designed, and patients who are diagnosed with early syphilis and treated with penicillin will be recruited for the study cohort. Before the first treatment, baseline information and biological specimens will be collected from the subjects, and serological tests for syphilis will be performed. Each participant will be followed up at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after the first treatment, and the clinical manifestations and serum non-treponemal test titres will be evaluated at each follow-up. Patients who will fail treatment are defined as cases, and those who will respond to treatment are defined as controls. Tests for SNPs related to penicillin-binding proteins and Tp47 will be performed in these cases and controls. Survival analysis is used performed to identify gene mutations of T. pallidum related to penicillin resistance and their combinations associated with treatment failure. Discussion: This protocol provides a practical clinical study design that illustrates the role of gene mutations of T. pallidum related to penicillin resistance in the treatment outcome of patients with early syphilis.

RESUMO

Stroke is strongly associated with death and disability. However, the associations between stroke and lipid profiles such as total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and red blood cells (RBCs) and anthropometric indices such as waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate these relationships in a Korean population. This large-scale cross-sectional study included data from 38,190 subjects collected from 2010 to 2018 by the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Simple logistic regression models and multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of stroke with lipid profiles and anthropometric indices in the crude model, adjusted Model 1, and fully adjusted Model 2. In men, stroke was negatively associated with height, weight, and hematocrit level. Total cholesterol and triglycerides were strongly negatively associated with stroke in Model 2. Creatinine level and stroke were weakly associated. Additionally, height, weight, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and hematocrit and creatinine levels were associated with stroke both before and after adjustment. In women, in Model 2, stroke was positively associated with height, weight, and creatinine level. A strong negative association was found between total cholesterol and stroke. Stroke was negatively associated with hemoglobin level, hematocrit level, and RBCs. Additionally, total cholesterol, hemoglobin level, hematocrit level, creatinine level, and RBCs were associated with stroke both before and after adjustment. Weight and height were more closely associated with stroke than waist circumference and WHtR in Korean men. Our results suggested that the association of stroke with triglycerides, height, and weight differed according to sex and that HDL-C was not associated with stroke in people of either sex.

RESUMO

Using data from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (N = 3864), we examined the relationship between proximity to aging parents and depression among middle-aged (45-64 years) married individuals in China. Our study depicted and explained the declining coresident rate and showed a majority of adult children live separately from their parents. Children living in different households had higher levels of depression than coresident children, including those living adjacently. Furthermore, having a coresident spouse increased the levels of depression of sons living in an adjacent dwelling and in the same city, and reduced the levels of depression of daughters living farther away. More intergenerational economic support increased the levels of depression of daughters living in an adjacent dwelling. These findings may offer a reference for married adult children to reconstruct intergenerational proximity and adjust intergenerational relations.

RESUMO

Background@#This study aimed to investigate the prevalence rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and identify the demographic, and sociological characteristics and changes in awareness of HCV infection by participating the study for North Korean defectors residing in South Korea. @*Methods@#This study prospectively enrolled participants. Demographic, sociological and clinical data, and questionnaire surveys focused on awareness of HCV infection were collected. @*Results@#In total, 211 North Korean defectors participated in this study from September 2020 until June 2021. There were 174 women (82.5%), and the overall mean age was 48.9 years (range, 20 to 80 years). Of these participants, 112 (53.1%) had immigrated to South Korea since 2011. The overall prevalence of anti-HCV antibody among North Korean defectors was 1.9%. Thirty participants (14.2%) had hepatitis B surface antigens. A huge lack of awareness regarding HCV infection has been observed among North Korean defectors. @*Conclusion@#This is the first prospective study to investigate the prevalence rate of HCV infection among North Korean defectors residing in South Korea. As North Korean defectors are a vulnerable group concerning HCV infection, they may benefit from HCV screening policies and educational interventions for HCV infection.

During the experiment, the body weight of mice was observed, and the disease activity index(DAI) score was recorded. After 7 days of modeling, the colon length was mea-sured, and the pathological changes in colon tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-1β(IL-1β), interleukin-6(IL-6), and interleukin-17(IL-17) in colon tissues of mice were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). The mRNA expression of IL-17, IL-17RA, Act1, TRAF2, TRAF5, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL10 was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). As revealed by the results of animal experiments, on the 10th day of drug administration, compared with the solvent model group, all the BCS groups showed significantly increased body weight, decreased DAI score, increased colon length, improved pathological damage of colon mucosa, and significantly inhibited expression of TNF-α,IL-6,IL-1β, and IL-17 in colon tissues. The high-dose BCS(0.20 g·kg~(-1)) could significantly reduce the mRNA expression levels of IL-17, Act1, TRAF2, TRAF5, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, CXCL1, and CXCL2 in colon tissues of UC model mice, tend to down-regulate mRNA expression levels of IL-17RA and CXCL10, significantly inhibit the protein expression of IL-17RA,Act1,and p-ERK1/2, and tend to decrease the protein expression of IL-17 and p-p38 MAPK.

RESUMO

Background: This study aimed to explore individual prevalence of respiratory symptoms and to describe the Korean population's treatment approaches, preventive health behaviors, and mental health conditions during the pandemic. Methods: We analyzed responses from an online nationwide survey, conducted between February 2021 to May 2021, about people's experiences during the pandemic. Statistical analysis was also performed to see if there were any significant differences in treatment and prevention strategies between different groups of respondents (between those had respiratory symptoms, compared with those who did not, and between those tested positive for COVID-19, compared with those who did not). Results: A total of 2,177 survey respondents completed the survey and, of these, only 142 had experienced symptoms. The most frequently reported respiratory infections related symptoms were runny or blocked nose (47.6%), cough (45.5%), fever (44.1%), sore throat (42.0%), and fatigue (30.1%). More than half of the respondents (53.1%) used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches as means of preventive measures. In terms of preventive behaviors, the more emphasized behaviors were mask-wearing (58.9%) and hand-washing after coming home (42.7%). The majority of the respondents (64.9%) did not show signs of mental health issues. Conclusion: In South Korea, conventional medicine was mainly used for COVID-19 treatment whereas CAM was commonly used as preventive measures. COVID-19 was also found to have less impact on the general population's mental health. The findings of this study may shed light on how the pandemic impacted the general population.

RESUMO

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), when powered with intermittent but renewable energies, holds an attractive potential to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle through efficiently converting the exorbitantly discharged CO2 to value-added fuels and/or chemicals and consequently reduce the greenhouse gas emission. Through systematically integrating the density functional theory calculations, the modeling statistics of various proportions of CO2RR-preferred electroactive sites, and the theoretical work function results, it is found that the crystallographically unambiguous Ag nanoclusters (NCs) hold a high possibility to enable an outstanding CO2RR performance, particularly at an optimal size of around 2 nm. Motivated by this, homogeneously well-distributed ultrasmall Ag NCs with an average size of ∼2 nm (2 nm Ag NCs) were thus synthesized to electrochemically promote CO2RR, and the results demonstrate that the 2 nm Ag NCs are able to achieve a significantly larger CO partial current density [j(CO)], an impressively higher CO Faraday efficiency of over 93.8%, and a lower onset overpotential (η) of 146 mV as well as a remarkably higher energy efficiency of 62.8% and a superior stability of 45 h as compared to Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and bulk Ag. Both theoretical computations and experimental results clearly and persuasively demonstrate an impressive promotion effect of the crystallographically explicit atomic structure for electrochemically reducing CO2 to CO, which exemplifies a novel design approach to more benchmark metal-based platforms for advancing the practically large-scale CO2RR application.

RESUMO

Background: The aim of our study was to translate and validate the mainland Chinese version of the short health scale (SHS), a disease-specific quality-of-life (QoL) scale for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods: The SHS was translated and validated according to the standard process: a translation and back-translation procedure and a reliability and validation study. Patients with IBD were enrolled, and their QoL was assessed using the SHS, the short inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire (SIBDQ), and the Bristol stool form scale. Reliability (internal consistency reliability, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability) and validity analyses were performed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the SHS. The impacts of different severity of major symptoms on QoL were analyzed by comparing the scores of SHS. Results: A total of 112 patients with IBD (69 with ulcerative colitis and 43 with Crohn's disease) completed the mainland Chinese version of the SHS, and 34 patients completed the SHS a second time within one to two weeks. Cronbach's alpha value of the SHS was 0.90, and its split-half coefficient was 0.83. Intraclass correlation coefficients of the four items ranged from 0.52 to 0.72. All four items of the SHS were significantly associated with the corresponding domains of the SIBDQ, with correlation coefficients ranging from -0.52 to -0.69 (p < 0.001). The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit of the one-factor model, with comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.878, normed fit index (NFI) = 0.874, incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.880, and goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.842. The patients with severe symptoms had higher scores in the SHS than those with no or mild symptoms. Conclusions: The SHS was simple and quick to be used. The SHS had good validity and reliability and was suitable for evaluating the QoL of patients with IBD in mainland China.
