[The effect of splenectomy on the immune status of children with active liver cirrhosis]. / Vliianie splenéktomii na immunnyi status detei s aktivnym tsirrozom pecheni.

A complex study of parameters of the systemic cell humoral immunity, secretory immune system, functional state and phagocytic activity of neutrophils as well as activity of the complement and its C3, C4 components in 28 children with active cirrhosis of the liver has shown that the disease was accompanied by a generalized disturbance of the immunity mechanisms. Splenectomy in these children was shown to have favorable influence on the immune status, to reduce activity of the immunopathological process in the liver. At the same time, splenectomy results in continuous suppression of neutrophilic phagocytosis which may be a cause of the development of postsplenectomy septic conditions.

PRIST was used to examine the time course of changes in the content of total blood IgE in 128 children aged 3 to 15 years suffering from chronic virus hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. A well-defined relationship was discovered between the above parameter and allergic background as well as the process activity in the liver, pointing to the capacity of that class immunoglobulins to reflect the intensity of not only allergic reactions but also of immunopathological processes lying at the basis of chronic active hepatic diseases.

[Antibodies to Streptococcus pneumoniae antigens in newborn infants]. / Antitela k nekotorym antigenam Streptococcus pneumoniae u novorozhdennykh detei.

The levels of antibodies to capsular polysaccharide antigens of pneumococci (serotypes 1, 3, 6B, 8, 9N, 15F, 23F), C-polysaccharide and protein antigen of pneumococci in the blood sera of 38 newborn infants at the moment of their birth (umbilical blood) and on the 5th or 6th day of their life, in their mothers' blood sera, as well as in the colostrum and milk of 48 nursing women, have been studied by means of the enzyme immunoassay. The study showed that in the normal course of pregnancy antibodies to pneumococci were transferred transplacentally from the mother to the fetus. Though in most cases their content in the blood of newborn infants was lower than that in maternal blood, it exceeded the average level of antipneumococcal antibodies in children aged 3-12 months. In the milk of nursing mothers considerable amount of IgA antibodies to pneumococci was detected, which might be an additional protective factor with respect to pneumococcal infection in infants.

The paper concerns variations in some parameters of humoral immunity in children with phenylketonuria examined at varying time (in the presence of specific dietetics and after its discontinuation). It is concluded that in children over 5 years of age, the hyperphenylalaninemia newly occurring after discontinuation of dietetics does not exert any material effect on the function of the mature enough immune system.
