RESUMO

The serum of a black woman has been found to contain a potent alloanti-N that reacted in direct agglutination tests with the 'N' antigen carried on Ss-active sialoglycoprotein. Thus far, such antibodies have been observed only in the sera of MSu/MSu individuals. However, our proposita had red cells that lacked 'N'. Her blood type was M+, N-, S-, s+, U+, He+. Results of family studies indicate that she is of the genotype MsHe/MSu. Our findings are consistent with recently reported data on the structure of the Henshaw antigen, which is located on a Ss-active sialoglycoprotein that does not carry 'N'.

RESUMO

Plasma hexachlorobenzene (HCB) residues in a Louisiana population exposed through the transportation and disposal of chemical waste containing HCB averaged 3.6 plus or minus 4.3 parts per billion (ppb) in a sample of 86 people. The highest level was 345 ppb in a waste disposal facility worker while the highest level in the general population was 23 ppb. There was no evidence of cutaneous porphyria by history or skin examination. Males had significantly higher residues than females (4.71 vs. 2.79 ppb) but there were no age differences. A possible association between HCB residues and coproporphyrin and lactic dehydrogenase was found. Only 2 of 48 meals sampled were positive for HCB. There was a correlation between HCB levels in household dust and plasma levels. Perchloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride production workers had plasma HCB levels of up to 233 ppb.

RESUMO

The relationship between serum ferritin concentration and the amount of storage iron has been studied in normal subjects. A high degree of correlation was demonstrated between serum ferritin concentration and storage iron measured by quantitative phlebotomy. The possible advantages of assessing iron stores by using the serum ferritin concentration are discussed.

RESUMO

The serum ferritin concentration is increased in both acute myeloblastic leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease. In acute leukaemia the mean concentration is about ten times the normal level and is associated with a high concentration of transferrin-bound iron. In Hodgkin's disease abnormal ferritinaemia is associated with a low concentration of transferrin-bound iron and appears to result from a block of reticuloendothelial iron release. Increased concentrations of circulating ferritin have also been observed in a few cases of chronic leukaemia and myelomatosis.
