Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are among the most prevalent conditions that might predispose individuals to life-threatening events. We aimed to examine their associations with cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality using a large-scale population dataset from the National Health Information Database in Korea. Patients and Methods: This population-based cohort study enrolled adults aged ≥40 years who had undergone more than two health examinations between 2009 and 2011. They were divided into four groups based on the presence of COPD and MetS. Analysis of the outcomes and CV events or deaths was performed from 2014 to 2019. We compared CV event incidence and mortality rates using a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier curves. Results: Totally, 5,101,810 individuals were included, among whom 3,738,458 (73.3%) had neither COPD nor MetS, 1,193,014 (23.4%) had only MetS, 125,976 (2.5%) had only COPD, and 44,362 (0.9%) had both. The risk of CV events was significantly higher in individuals with both COPD and MetS than in those with either COPD or MetS alone (HRs: 2.4 vs 1.6 and 1.8, respectively; all P <0.001). Similarly, among those with both COPD and MetS, all-cause and CV mortality risks were also elevated (HRs, 2.9 and 3.0, respectively) compared to the risks in those with either COPD (HRs, 2.6 and 2.1, respectively) or MetS (HRs, 1.7 and 2.1, respectively; all P <0.001). Conclusion: The comorbidity of MetS in patients with COPD increases the incidence of CV events and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality rates.

Objectives: Childhood maltreatment can negatively impact cognitive development, including executive function, working memory, and processing speed. This study investigated the impact of childhood maltreatment on cognitive function in young adults using various measurements, including computerized tests, and their relationship with emotional dysregulation. Methods: We recruited 149 healthy individuals with and without maltreatment experiences and used the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale IV (WAIS-IV) and a computerized battery to analyze cognitive function. Results: Both the WAIS-IV and computerized tests revealed that individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment had decreased cognitive function, especially in terms of working memory and processing speed. These individuals tended to employ maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Among cognitive functions, working memory is negatively related to maladaptive emotion regulation strategies such as catastrophizing. Conclusion: This study highlights the effects of childhood maltreatment on cognitive function in young adulthood. Moreover, the study suggests clinical implications of cognitive interventions for improving emotion regulation and cognitive function in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment.

Two-dimensional electrides can acquire topologically non-trivial phases due to intriguing interplay between the cationic atomic layers and anionic electron layers. However, experimental evidence of topological surface states has yet to be verified. Here, via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), we probe the magnetic Weyl states of the ferromagnetic electride [Gd2C]2+·2e-. In particular, the presence of Weyl cones and Fermi-arc states is demonstrated through photon energy-dependent ARPES measurements, agreeing with theoretical band structure calculations. Notably, the STM measurements reveal that the Fermi-arc states exist underneath a floating quantum electron liquid on the top Gd layer, forming double-stacked surface states in a heterostructure. Our work thus not only unveils the non-trivial topology of the [Gd2C]2+·2e- electride but also realizes a surface heterostructure that can host phenomena distinct from the bulk.

Aging leads to tissue and cellular changes, often driven by oxidative stress and inflammation, which contribute to age-related diseases. Our research focuses on harnessing the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Korean Ulmus macrocarpa Hance, a traditional herbal remedy, to address muscle loss and atrophy. We evaluated the effects of Ulmus extract on various parameters in a muscle atrophy model, including weight, exercise performance, grip strength, body composition, muscle mass, and fiber characteristics. Additionally, we conducted Western blot and RT-PCR analyses to examine muscle protein regulation, apoptosis factors, inflammation, and antioxidants. In a dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy model, Ulmus extract administration promoted genes related to muscle formation while reducing those associated with muscle atrophy. It also mitigated inflammation and boosted muscle antioxidants, indicating a potential improvement in muscle atrophy. These findings highlight the promise of Ulmus extract for developing pharmaceuticals and supplements to combat muscle loss and atrophy, paving the way for clinical applications.

We investigated organ specific Toxocara canis larval migration in mice infected with T. canis larvae. We observed the worm burden and systemic immune responses. Three groups of BALB/c mice (n=5 each) were orally administered 1,000 T. canis 2nd stage larvae to induce larva migrans. Mice were sacrificed at 1, 3, and 5 weeks post-infection. Liver, lung, brain, and eye tissues were collected. Tissue from 2 mice per group was digested for larval count, while the remaining 3 mice underwent histological analysis. Blood hematology and serology were evaluated and compared to that in a control uninfected group (n=5) to assess the immune response. Cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid were also analyzed. We found that, 1 week post-infection, the mean parasite load in the liver (72±7.1), brain (31±4.2), lungs (20±5.7), and eyes (2±0) peaked and stayed constant until the 3 weeks. By 5-week post-infection, the worm burden in the liver and lungs significantly decreased to 10±4.2 and 9±5.7, respectively, while they remained relatively stable in the brain and eyes (18±4.2 and 1±0, respectively). Interestingly, ocular larvae resided in all retinal layers, without notable inflammation in outer retina. Mice infected with T. canis exhibited elevated levels of neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, and immunoglobulin E. At 5 weeks post-infection, interleukin (IL)-5 and IL-13 levels were elevated in BAL fluid. Whereas IL-4, IL-10, IL-17, and interferon-γ levels in BAL fluid were similar to that in controls. Our findings demonstrate that a small portion of T. canis larvae migrate to the eyes and brain within the first week of infection. Minimal tissue inflammation was observed, probably due to increase of anti-inflammatory cytokines. This study contributes to our understanding of the histological and immunological responses to T. canis infection in mice, which may have implications to further understand human toxocariasis.

Neoantigens are ideal targets for cancer immunotherapy because they are expressed de novo in tumor tissue but not in healthy tissue and are therefore recognized as foreign by the immune system. Advances in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics technologies have enabled the quick identification and prediction of tumor-specific neoantigens; however, only a small fraction of predicted neoantigens are immunogenic. To improve the predictability of immunogenic neoantigens, we developed the in silico neoantigen prediction workflows VACINUSpMHC and VACINUSTCR: VACINUSpMHC incorporates physical binding between peptides and MHCs (pMHCs), and VACINUSTCR integrates T cell reactivity to the pMHC complex through deep learning-based pairing with T cell receptors (TCRs) of putative tumor-reactive CD8 tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). We then validated our neoantigen prediction workflows both in vitro and in vivo in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and in a B16F10 mouse melanoma model. The predictive abilities of VACINUSpMHC and VACINUSTCR were confirmed in a validation cohort of 8 patients with HCC. Of a total of 118 neoantigen candidates predicted by VACINUSpMHC, 48 peptides were ultimately selected using VACINUSTCR. In vitro validation revealed that among the 48 predicted neoantigen candidates, 13 peptides were immunogenic. Assessment of the antitumor efficacy of the candidate neoepitopes using a VACINUSTCR in vivo mouse model suggested that vaccination with the predicted neoepitopes induced neoantigen-specific T cell responses and enabled the trafficking of neoantigen-specific CD8 + T cell clones into the tumor tissue, leading to tumor suppression. This study showed that the prediction of immunogenic neoantigens can be improved by integrating a tumor-reactive TIL TCR-pMHC ternary complex.

Targeted drug delivery systems based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have progressed tremendously since inception and are now widely applicable in diverse scientific fields. However, translating MOF agents directly to targeted drug delivery systems remains a challenge due to the biomolecular corona phenomenon. Here, we observed that supramolecular conjugation of antibodies to the surface of MOF particles (MOF-808) via electrostatic interactions and coordination bonding can reduce protein adhesion in biological environments and show stealth shields. Once antibodies are stably conjugated to particles, they were neither easily exchanged with nor covered by biomolecule proteins, which is indicative of the stealth effect. Moreover, upon conjugation of the MOF particle with specific targeted antibodies, namely, anti-CD44, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), the resulting hybrid exhibits an augmented targeting efficacy toward cancer cells overexpressing these receptors, such as HeLa, SK-BR-3, and 4T1, as evidenced by flow cytometry. The therapeutic effectiveness of the antibody-conjugated MOF (anti-M808) was further evaluated through in vivo imaging and the assessment of tumor inhibition effects using IR-780-loaded EGFR-M808 in a 4T1 tumor xenograft model employing nude mice. This study therefore provides insight into the use of supramolecular antibody conjugation as a promising method for developing MOF-based drug delivery systems.

Increasing multidrug-resistant pathogenic microbial around the world become a global problem, making it imperative to develop effective methods for bacterial inactivation in wastewater. In this study, we propose a multifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) system to successfully disinfect microbial cells and degrade orange (II) dyes. CoOx NP were synthesized by spin-coating onto hydrothermally synthesized TiO2 nanorod arrays followed by electrodeposited NiFe-LDH to develop the NiFe-LDH/CoOx NP-TiO2 NRs. Interestingly, spin-coated CoOx NP-TiO2 NRs exhibited a 1.5-fold enhancement in photocurrent (1.384 mA/cm2) than pristine TiO2 NRs (0.92 mA/cm2). A NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) cocatalysts layer further exhibits the maximum photocurrent density of 1.64 mA/cm2 with IPCE of 84.5% at 1.0 VAg/AgCl at 380 nm. Furthermore, NiFe-LDH/CoOx-TiO2 NR photoanodes were effectually employed for photoelectrochemical bacteria disinfection and organic pollutant removals. With NiFe-LDH/CoOx-TiO2 NR, 99% (120 min) bacterial inactivation and 99% (60 min) orange II dye decomposition efficiency was achieved. Superoxide radicals (-O2•), hydroxyl radicals (HO•), and holes (h+) played a critical role in the PEC degradation systems. Due to the synergy between NiFe-LDH cocatalyst and CoOx interlayer, surface water oxidation reactions were accelerated over NiFe-LDH/CoOx NP-TiO2 NRs. The charge transport process in NiFe-LDH/CoOx NP-TiO2 NRs photoanode-based PEC system was proposed in detail.

Targeted drug delivery using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has shown significant progress. However, the tumor microenvironment (TME) impedes efficient MOF particle transfer into tumor cells. To tackle this issue, we pre-coated nano-sized MOF-808 particles with multifunctional proteins: glutathione S-transferase (GST)-affibody (Afb) and collagenase, aiming to navigate the TME more effectively. The surface of MOF-808 particles is coated with GST-Afb-a fusion protein of GST and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) Afb or epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) Afb which has target affinity. We also added collagenase enzymes capable of breaking down collagen in the extracellular matrix (ECM) through supramolecular conjugation, all without chemical modification. By stabilizing these proteins on the surface, GST-Afb mitigate biomolecule absorption, facilitating specific tumor cell targeting. Simultaneously, collagenase degrades the ECM in the TME, enabling deep tissue penetration of MOF particles. Our resulting system, termed collagenase-GST-Afb-MOF-808 (Col-Afb-M808), minimizes undesired interactions between MOF particles and external biological proteins. It not only induces cell death through Afb-mediated cell-specific targeting, but also showcases advanced cellular internalization in 3D multicellular spheroid cancer models, with effective deep tissue penetration. The therapeutic efficacy of Col-Afb-M808 was further assessed via in vivo imaging and evaluation of tumor inhibition following injection of IR-780 loaded Col-Afb-M808 in 4T1tumor-bearing nude mice. This study offers key insights into the regulation of the multifunctional protein-adhesive surface of MOF particles, paving the way for the designing even more effective targeted drug delivery systems with nano-sized MOF particles.

Background: Kidney transplantation (KT) improves physical and psychological prognoses for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). However, few comparative studies have examined depression and suicide rates among patients with ESKD treated with dialysis versus KT. Methods: Data on 21,809 patients with ESKD were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, extending from January 2002 to December 2018. These patients exhibited no history of depression or insomnia before starting renal replacement therapy. Outcomes were compared between dialysis and KT recipients using 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM). Results: Of the patients, 17,649 received dialysis (hemodialysis, 15,537; peritoneal dialysis, 2,112), while 4,160 underwent KT. Of those on dialysis, 45.04% (7,949) experienced insomnia, compared to 25.72% (1,070) of KT recipients (P<0.001). Depression was more frequent among dialysis recipients (22.77%, 4,019) than KT recipients (8.61%, 358; P<0.001). Additionally, those on dialysis had a higher incidence of suicide (0.19%, 33) than recipients of KT (0.12%, 5; P=0.047). After PSM, the hazard ratio (HR) for depression in patients on dialysis compared to KT recipients was 1.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.56-1.99). In subgroup analysis, the relative likelihood of depression among dialysis recipients was particularly high for residents of urban areas (HR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.80-2.44) and patients under 65 years old (HR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.62-2.09). Conclusions: KT recipients exhibit a lower suicide rate than patients on dialysis. Furthermore, KT is associated with a lower prevalence of depression among Korean patients with ESKD, particularly urban residents and individuals under 65 years old.

The antimicrobial activity of the natural compounds from plant and food have well discovered since the interest on the beneficial effect of the natural compounds was risen. Quercetin, a flavonoid derived from vegetables, including onions, red leaf lettuces and cherries has been studied for diverse biological characteristics as anti-cancer and anti-microbial activities. The aim of current study is to investigate the specific antibacterial modes of action of quercetin against Escherichia coli. Quercetin decreased the E. coli cell viability and induced the severe damages (oxidative stress, DNA fragmentation) leading to cell death. ROS generation was observed during the process, which we confirmed that oxidative stress was the key action of antibacterial activity of quercetin exerting its influence potently. Based on the results of Annexin V and Caspace FITC-VAD-FMK assay, the oxidative damage in E. coli has led to the bacterial apoptosis-like death in E. coli. To sum up, the contribution of ROS generation exerts crucial impact in antibacterial activity of quercetin.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between neuropathic pain and CREB-binding protein (CBP) and methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2) expression levels in a rat model with spared nerve injury (SNI). Materials and Methods: Rat (male Sprague-Dawley white rats) models with surgical SNI (n = 6) were prepared, and naive rats (n = 5) were used as controls. The expression levels of CBP and MeCP2 in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) were compared through immunohistochemistry at 7 and 14 days after surgery. The relationship between neuropathic pain and CBP/MeCP2 was also analyzed through intrathecal siRNA administration. Results: SNI induced a significant increase in the number of CBPs in L4 compared with contralateral DRG as well as with naive rats. The number of MeCP2 cells in the dorsal horn on the ipsilateral side decreased significantly compared with the contralateral dorsal horn and the control group. SNI induced a significant decrease in the number of MeCP2 neurons in the L4 ipsilateral DRG compared with the contralateral DRG and naive rats. The intrathecal injection of CBP siRNA significantly inhibited mechanical allodynia induced by SNI compared with non-targeting siRNA treatment. MeCP2 siRNA injection showed no significant effect on mechanical allodynia. Conclusions: The results suggest that CBP and MeCP2 may play an important role in the generation of neuropathic pain following peripheral nerve injury.

Objective: Reconstruction methods, including stent-assisted coiling, multiple telescopic stents, and flow diverters, are preferred modalities for the treatment of unruptured vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs). We aimed to compare the clinical outcomes between two reconstructive flow diversion techniques: single flow diverter (FD) device and multiple telescopic stenting (TS). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 39 patients with unruptured VADAs. Of these, 17 patients were treated with multiple TS and 22 with a single FD device. Aneurysm characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: All aneurysms included in this study successfully achieved flow diversion, regardless of the treatment modality and duration. However, the mean procedure duration to complete the diversion was shorter in the FD group. Subgroup analysis in TS group showed that there were no significant clinical differences between the low-profile visualized intraluminal support and Enterprise stents, except for the mean procedure duration. Conclusions: Both the single FD and multiple TS methods showed excellent angiographic and clinical outcomes in the treatment of unruptured VADAs. However, single FD required a shorter procedure duration and was associated with faster achievement of complete flow diversion.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Oral antiviral therapy with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is well-tolerated and lifesaving, but real-world data on utilization are limited. We examined rates of evaluation and treatment in patients from the REAL-B consortium. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study nested within our retrospective multinational clinical consortium (2000-2021). We determined the proportions of patients receiving adequate evaluation, meeting AASLD treatment criteria, and initiating treatment at any time during the study period. We also identified factors associated with receiving adequate evaluation and treatment using multivariable logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: We analyzed 12,566 adult treatment-naïve patients with CHB from 25 centers in 9 countries (mean age 47.1 years, 41.7% female, 96.1% Asian, 49.6% Western region, 8.7% cirrhosis). Overall, 73.3% (9,206 patients) received adequate evaluation. Among the adequately evaluated, 32.6% (3,001 patients) were treatment eligible by AASLD criteria, 83.3% (2,500 patients) of whom were initiated on NAs, with consistent findings in analyses using EASL criteria. On multivariable logistic regression adjusting for age, sex, cirrhosis, and ethnicity plus region, female sex was associated with adequate evaluation (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.13, p = 0.004), but female treatment-eligible patients were about 50% less likely to initiate NAs (aOR 0.54, p <0.001). Additionally, the lowest evaluation and treatment rates were among Asian patients from the West, but no difference was observed between non-Asian patients and Asian patients from the East. Asian patients from the West (vs. East) were about 40-50% less likely to undergo adequate evaluation (aOR 0.60) and initiate NAs (aOR 0.54) (both p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation and treatment rates were suboptimal for patients with CHB in both the East and West, with significant sex and ethnic disparities. Improved linkage to care with linguistically competent and culturally sensitive approaches is needed. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS: Significant sex and ethnic disparities exist in hepatitis B evaluation and treatment, with female treatment-eligible patients about 50% less likely to receive antiviral treatment and Asian patients from Western regions also about 50% less likely to receive adequate evaluation or treatment compared to Asians from the East (there was no significant difference between Asian patients from the East and non-Asian patients). Improved linkage to care with linguistically competent and culturally sensitive approaches is needed.

Herein, we successfully synthesized Hf/Zr co-doping on Fe2O3 nanorod photocatalyst by a hydrothermal process and quenching methods. The synergistic roles of Hf and Zr double-doping on the bacteria inactivation test and decomposition of organic pollutants were investigated in detail for the 1 wt% CoOx loaded Hf/Zr-Fe2O3 NRs and CuOx/CoOx loaded Hf/Zr-Fe2O3 NRs photocatalyst. Initially, the rod-like porous morphology of the Hf/Zr-doped Fe2O3 NRs was produced via a hydrothermal method at various Hf co-doping (0, 2, 4, 7 and 10)%. Further, CoOx and CuOx loaded by a wet impregnation approach on the Hf/Zr-Fe2O3 NRs and a highly photoactive Hf(4)/Zr-Fe2O3 [CoOx/CuOx] NRs photocatalyst were developed. After the Hf(4)/Zr-Fe2O3 [CoOx/CuOx] NRs photocatalyst treatment, the Bio-TEM imagery of bacterial cells showed extensive morphological deviations in cell membranes. Hf(4)/Zr-Fe2O3 NR achieved 84.1% orange II degradation upon 3 h illumination, which is higher than that of Hf-Fe2O3 and Zr-Fe2O3 (68.7 and 73.5%, respectively). Additionally, the optimum sample, Hf(4)/Zr-Fe2O3 [CoOx/CuOx] photocatalyst, exhibited 95.5% orange II dye degradation after light radiation for 3 h. Optimized Hf(4)/Zr-Fe2O3 [CoOx/CuOx] catalysts exhibited 99.9% and 99.7% inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus with 120 min, respectively. Further, scavenger experiments revealed that the electrons are the primary responsible species for photocatalytic kinetics. This work will provide a rapid method for the development of high photocatalytic performance materials for bacterial disinfection and organic degradation.

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality rates of patients with heart failure (HF) and functional mitral regurgitation (MR) remain substantial despite guideline-directed medical therapy for HF. We evaluated the efficacy of ertugliflozin for reduction of functional MR associated with HF with mild to moderately reduced ejection fraction. METHODS: The EFFORT trial (Ertugliflozin for Functional Mitral Regurgitation) was a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial to examine the hypothesis that the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor ertugliflozin is effective for improving MR in patients with HF with New York Heart Association functional class II or III, 35%≤ejection fraction<50%, and effective regurgitant orifice area of chronic functional MR >0.1 cm2 on baseline echocardiography. We randomly assigned 128 patients to receive either ertugliflozin or placebo in addition to guideline-directed medical therapy for HF. The primary end point was change in effective regurgitant orifice area of functional MR from baseline to the 12-month follow-up. Secondary end points included changes in regurgitant volume, left ventricular (LV) volume indices, left atrial volume index, LV global longitudinal strain, and NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide). RESULTS: The treatment groups were generally well-balanced with regard to baseline characteristics: mean age, 66±11 years; 61% men; 13% diabetes; 51% atrial fibrillation; 43% use of angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor; ejection fraction, 42±8%; and effective regurgitant orifice area, 0.20±0.12 cm2. The decrease in effective regurgitant orifice area was significantly greater in the ertugliflozin group than in the placebo group (-0.05±0.06 versus 0.03±0.12 cm2; P<0.001). Compared with placebo, ertugliflozin significantly reduced regurgitant volume by 11.2 mL (95% CI, -16.1 to -6.3; P=0.009), left atrial volume index by 6.0 mL/m2 (95% CI, -12.16 to 0.15; P=0.005), and LV global longitudinal strain by 1.44% (95% CI, -2.42% to -0.46%; P=0.004). There were no significant between-group differences regarding changes in LV volume indices, ejection fraction, or NT-proBNP levels. Serious adverse events occurred in one patient (1.6%) in the ertugliflozin group and 6 (9.2%) in the placebo group (P=0.12). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with functional MR associated with HF, ertugliflozin significantly improved LV global longitudinal strain and left atrial remodeling, and reduced functional MR. Background: Although osteoarthritis (OA) development is epidemiologically multifactorial, a primary underlying mechanism is still under debate. Understanding the pathophysiology of OA remains challenging. Recently, experts have focused on autophagy as a contributor to OA development. Method: To better understand the pathogenesis of OA, we survey the literature on the role of autophagy and the molecular mechanisms of OA development. To identify relevant studies, we used controlled vocabulary and free text keywords to search the MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and SCOPUS database. Thirty-one studies were included for data extraction and systematic review. Among these studies, twenty-five studies investigated the effects of autophagy in aging and OA chondrocytes, six studies examined the effects of autophagy in normal human chondrocytes, and only one study investigated the effects of mechanical stress-induced autophagy on the development of OA in normal chondrocytes. Results: The studies suggest that autophagy activation prevents OA by exerting cell-protective effects in normal human chondrocytes. However, in aging and osteoarthritis (OA) chondrocytes, the role of autophagy is intricate, as certain studies indicate that stimulating autophagy in these cells can have a cytotoxic effect, while others propose that it may have a protective (cytoprotective) effect against damage or degeneration. Conclusions: Mechanical stress-induced autophagy is also thought to be involved in the development of OA, but further research is required to identify the precise mechanism. Thus, autophagy contributions should be interpreted with caution in aging and the types of OA cartilage.

The photocatalytic efficiency for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is significantly influenced by operational parameters like humidity and flow velocity, exhibiting notable and inconsistent fluctuations in both lab-scale and large-scale demonstrations. In this study, operando spectroscopy and isotope analysis were employed to investigate the correlation between humidity levels and degradation of gaseous acetaldehyde using TiO2 photocatalysts, aiming to demonstrate the scaling-up of photocatalytic air purifier. It was observed that rate constants for the mineralization of acetaldehyde rapidly decreased by 30% as relative humidity increased from 25% to 80% in the flow system (with an air velocity, v = 0.78 m/s). However, batch system showed smaller change with only a 10% reduction of the rate constant. Humidity fluctuations were more pronounced under high-speed conditions and were amplified in air purifier (v = 3.8 m/s). Time-resolved operando spectroscopy using an 13C isotope of acetaldehyde revealed that humidity's distinct role in dark adsorption and photocatalytic reactions. Water was found to inhibit the formation of crotonaldehyde during aldol condensation reaction in dark condition. Moreover, water suppressed photocatalytic mineralization by inhibiting acetate oxidation to formate. These findings provide valuable insights for improving realistic air purification processes, underscoring the importance of identifying key intermediates and controlling humidity to enhance the selectivity of gaseous pollutant oxidation reactions.

The study aimed to investigate the survival rate of patients with dementia according to their level of physical activity and body mass index (BMI). A total of 5,789 patients with dementia were retrieved from the 2009-2015 National Health Insurance Sharing Service databases. Survival analysis was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) for physical activity and BMI. The study sample primarily comprised older adults (65-84 years old, 83.81%) and female (n = 3,865, 66.76%). Participants who engaged in physical activity had a lower mortality risk (HR = 0.91, p = 0.02). Compared to the underweight group, patients with dementia who had normal weight (HR = 0.86, p = 0.01), obesity (HR = 0.85, p = 0.03) and more than severe obesity (HR = 0.72, p = 0.02) demonstrated a lower mortality risk. This study emphasizes the significance of avoiding underweight and engaging in physical activity to reducing mortality risk in patients with dementia, highlighting the necessity for effective interventions.
