RESUMO

The emergence of nontrivial topological order in condensed matter has been attracting a great deal of attention owing to its promising technological applications in novel functional nanodevices. In ferroelectrics, the realization of polar topological order at an ultimately small scale is extremely challenging due to the lack of chiral interaction and the critical size of the ferroelectricity. Here, we break through these limitations and demonstrate that the ultimate atomic-scale polar skyrmion and meron (∼2 nm) can be induced by engineering oxygen vacancies on the SrTiO3 (001) surface based on first-principles calculations. The paraelectric-to-antiferrodistortive phase transition leads to a novel topological transition from skyrmion to meron, indicating phase-topology correlations. We also discuss accumulating and driving polar skyrmions based on the oxygen divacancy model; these results and the recent discovery of defect engineering techniques suggest the possibility of arithmetic operations on topological numbers through the natural self-organization and diffusion features of oxygen vacancies.

RESUMO

Brittle fracture of a covalent material is ultimately governed by the strength of the electronic bonds. Recently, attempts have been made to alter the mechanical properties including fracture strength by excess electron/hole doping. However, the underlying mechanics/mechanism of how these doped electrons/holes interact with the bond and changes its strength is yet to be revealed. Here, we perform first-principles density-functional theory calculations to clarify the effect of excess electrons/holes on the bonding strength of covalent Si. We demonstrate that the bond strength of Si decreases or increases monotonically in correspondence with the doping concentration. Surprisingly, change to the extent of 30-40% at the maximum feasible doping concentration could be observed. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the change in the covalent bond strength is determined by the bonding/antibonding state of the doped excess electrons/holes. In summary, this work explains the electronic strengthening mechanism of covalent Si from a quantum mechanical point of view and provides valuable insights into the electronic-level design of strength in covalent materials.

RESUMO

Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), converting a heat flow to transverse electric voltage, originates from the Berry phase of electronic wave function near the Fermi energy EF. Thus, the ANE provides a sensitive probe to detect a topological state that produces large Berry curvature. In addition, a magnet that exhibits a large ANE using low-cost and safe elements will be useful to develop a novel energy harvesting technology. Here, we report our observation of a high ANE exceeding 3 microvolts per kelvin above room temperature in the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn with the Curie temperature of 760 kelvin. Our theoretical analysis clarifies that a "nodal plane" produces a flat hexagonal frame with strongly enhanced Berry curvature, resulting in the large ANE. Our discovery of the large ANE in Fe3Sn opens the path for the previously unexplored functionality of flat degenerate electronic states and for developing flexible film thermopile and heat current sensors.

RESUMO

The recent discoveries of strikingly large zero-field Hall and Nernst effects in antiferromagnets Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge) have brought the study of magnetic topological states to the forefront of condensed matter research and technological innovation. These effects are considered fingerprints of Weyl nodes residing near the Fermi energy, promoting Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge) as a fascinating platform to explore the elusive magnetic Weyl fermions. In this review, we provide recent updates on the insights drawn from experimental and theoretical studies of Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge) by combining previous reports with our new, comprehensive set of transport measurements of high-quality Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge single crystals. In particular, we report magnetotransport signatures specific to chiral anomalies in Mn3Ge and planar Hall effect in Mn3Sn, which have not yet been found in earlier studies. The results summarized here indicate the essential role of magnetic Weyl fermions in producing the large transverse responses in the absence of magnetization.

RESUMO

Thermoelectric generation using the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has great potential for application in energy harvesting technology because the transverse geometry of the Nernst effect should enable efficient, large-area and flexible coverage of a heat source. For such applications to be viable, substantial improvements will be necessary not only for their performance but also for the associated material costs, safety and stability. In terms of the electronic structure, the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) originates from the Berry curvature of the conduction electrons near the Fermi energy1,2. To design a large Berry curvature, several approaches have been considered using nodal points and lines in momentum space3-10. Here we perform a high-throughput computational search and find that 25 percent doping of aluminium and gallium in alpha iron, a naturally abundant and low-cost element, dramatically enhances the ANE by a factor of more than ten, reaching about 4 and 6 microvolts per kelvin at room temperature, respectively, close to the highest value reported so far. The comparison between experiment and theory indicates that the Fermi energy tuning to the nodal web-a flat band structure made of interconnected nodal lines-is the key for the strong enhancement in the transverse thermoelectric coefficient, reaching a value of about 5 amperes per kelvin per metre with a logarithmic temperature dependence. We have also succeeded in fabricating thin films that exhibit a large ANE at zero field, which could be suitable for designing low-cost, flexible microelectronic thermoelectric generators11-13.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings of ovarian cancer in association with endometriotic cysts by detailed comparison of the findings of benign and malignant tumors. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This was a retrospective study of 138 women who had an operation for ovarian tumors at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Kochi Health Sciences Center between September 1, 2011, and July 30, 2015. The ovarian tumors were divided into two groups: the benign group (endometriotic cysts) and the malignant group (ovarian cancer in association with endometriotic cysts). RESULTS: Of the 138 patients, 28 had malignant disease, and 110 had benign endometriotic cysts. Patients in the malignant group were significantly older than patients in the benign group. The mean maximum tumor diameter was also significantly larger for the malignant tumors. Unilocular-solid and multilocular-solid type tumors were present in 25.0% and 75.0% of malignant tumors, and in 9.1% and 19.1% of benign tumors, respectively. The mean maximum solid component diameter and height were significantly larger in the malignant tumors than in the benign tumors. The solid components were present on the abdominal side of the cyst wall in 12.5% of benign tumors and in 51.9% of malignant tumors. CONCLUSION: In elderly patients, the presence of large solid components in large endometriotic cysts, especially the abdominal side of the cyst wall, might suggest malignancy. MICRO ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to clarify the findings of ovarian cancer in association with endometriotic cysts by detailed comparison of the findings of benign and malignant tumors. The presence of solid components in large endometriotic cysts, especially the abdominal side of the cyst wall, might suggest malignancy.

RESUMO

Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) is a group of disorders in monochorionic twins characterized by a large intertwin hemoglobin difference without amniotic fluid discordance. Reticulocyte count is used to diagnose this condition, but little is known about the role of erythroblasts, which are the prior stage of reticulocytes. In the present case of TAPS, the 25-yr-old Japanese mother showed no signs of oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios throughout gestation. The twins were born at 36 weeks and 6 days, weighing 2,648g and 1,994g. The intertwin hemoglobin difference in umbilical cord blood was (21.1-5.0=) 16.1g/dL and the donor twin showed signs of chronic anemia, including myocardial hypertrophy and pericardial effusion. Erythroblastosis of the donor twin was prolonged (53,088.5, 42,114.8 and 44,217.9/µL on days 0, 1 and 2, respectively). Erythroblastosis, which indicates chronic anemia, is also a good diagnostic indicator of TAPS.
