RESUMO
The increased concentration of malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) in peripheral blood red cells of workers engaged in the production of iron-manganese alloyes was found. That provide evidence that increased peroxidation of red blood cell lipids induced by the production of free radicals is due to factors present in the occupational environment.

The study was performed in patients taking Cordafen Polfa 30 mg a day. Just after three days of its administration, impaired basal metabolism of polymorphonuclear granulocytes in NBT test was found. After seven days of Cordafen use was demonstrated. Cordafen has no effect on oxygen metabolic activity in granulocytes stimulated by latex particles.

In red blood cells of men which take nifedipine in daily doses 30 mg was found: lower copper concentration, higher zinc concentration as compared to concentrations of these metals determined before administration of nifedipine. Changes in Cu and Zn blood concentrations were intensified during administration of the drug. The vitamin C concentration did not change substantially.

It was found that 0.051 mmol/l concentration of verapamil inhibits the resting (spontaneous) oxygenic metabolism of the human peripheral blood polymorphonuclear granulocytes. In experiments in vitro it was expressed by the statistically significant lower capacity to reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) by the granulocytes incubated with the verapamil solution in comparison with the same capacity without the verapamil solution.

It was found that nifedipine used in patients in doses 30 mg per day decreased lipids peroxidation in polymorphonuclear granulocytes measured by lower malonyl dialdehyde concentration. In the some time nifedipine enhanced antioxidant activity of granulocytes measured by increased superoxide dismutase and selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase activities and higher concentration of reduced glutathione.

After 3 days of orally administrated cordafen (nifedipine) (30 mg per day divided in 3 equal doses) we revealed in red blood cells: statistically significant decrease of malonyl dialdehyde concentration, statistically significant increase of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase activity and superoxide dismutase activity. Also increased mean reduced glutathione concentration in erythrocytes of human peripheral blood was found, though statistically nonsignificant.

Out of 205 workers employed at production of iron-manganese alloys in 35.6% chronic bronchitis (CB) was found. In 11.1% CB occurred in non-smokers, and in 42.5% in cigarette smokers. The incidence of CB was increasing with the number of smoked cigarettes, and in the workers with smoking index < or = 10 it was 53.3% (smoking index = number of cigarette packs smoked daily (1 pack = 20 cigarettes) x number of smoking years). No influence of occupation environment was found on the incidence of CB in the studied workers.

The activity of myeloperoxidase and beta-glucuronidase was determined in neutrophil granulocytes of the peripheral blood in workers of steel-works employed at the production of ferrous and manganese alloys. In comparison with the control group granulocytes in metallurgists under study showed significantly higher activity of beta-glucuronidase while an increased activity of myeloperoxidase was found in workers employed for a period exceeding 10 years.

Spirometric examinations were performed in 205 workers engaged in production of iron-manganese alloys. It was found that mean values of FEV1, FEV1%, PEFR, MEF25%-75% VC and MMF were significantly lower in persons above 40 years of age, smokers and in those suffering from chronic bronchitis in comparison with people below the age of 40, non-smokers and persons free from chronic bronchitis. No relationship between the length of employment and the ventilation capacity was found.

Urine excretion of hydroxylysine in workers occupationally exposed to manganese was determined. The concentration of manganese in the air of occupational environment did not exceed 2.5 mg/m3. No changes in urine excretion of hydroxylysine in workers occupationally exposed to manganese in comparison with controls were found.

In metallurgic workers exposed to manganese, ferric oxides, chromates, noise, thermal radiation and enhanced temperature in surroundings, a lower level of alpha 2-macroglobulin at an unlowered level of alpha 1-antitrypsin was observed. There was no relationship between either the length of employment or chronic bronchitis and level of alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 2-macroglobulin in the blood of workers under study.

In 30 patients the metabolic activity of the neutrophils measured with the reduction ability of nitroblue tetrazolium was determined after intravenous administration of iodinated contrast media for cholangiography or urography. It was shown that 20 minutes after intravenous injection of the contrast medium the metabolic activity of phagocytizing granulocytes increased steeply and returned to the initial value after 24 hours.

We estimated bactericidal activity of peripheral blood neutrophils, using nitrotetrazolium blue reduction test (NBT), in metallurgists producing ferromanganese alloys. We didn't find essential changes in neutrophils metabolic activity in metallurgists comparing with the control group. Only spontaneous reduction index mean values were lower in metallurgists working over 10 years, and higher in metallurgists who smoked more cigarettes. Chronic bronchitis increased the index of stimulated reduction NBT.

In the serum of steel mill workers exposed to manganese, iron, chromates, ultraviolet radiation and noise, levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides were determined. In workers under study only increased level of triglycerides was found in comparison with the control group. But in the group of smokers, the level of cholesterol increased in persons above the age of 40 and in persons working longer than 10 years.
