RESUMO

In this study, various remote sensing data, modeling data and emission inventories were integrated to analyze the tempo-spatial distribution of biomass burning in mainland Southeast Asia and its effects on the local ambient air quality from 2001 to 2016. Land cover changes have been considered in dividing the biomass burning into four types: forest fires, shrubland fires, crop residue burning and other fires. The results show that the monthly average number of fire spots peaked at 34,512 in March and that the monthly variation followed a seasonal pattern, which was closely related to precipitation and farming activities. The four types of biomass burning fires presented different tempo-spatial distributions. Moreover, the monthly Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), concentration of particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) total column also peaked in March with values of 0.62, 45 µg/m3 and 3.25 × 1018 molecules/cm2, respectively. There are significant correlations between the monthly means of AOD (r = 0.74, P < 0.001), PM2.5 concentration (r = 0.88, P < 0.001), and CO total column (r = 0.82, P < 0.001) and the number of fire spots in the fire season. We used Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model to resolve the sources of PM2.5 into 3 factors. The result indicated that the largest contribution (48%) to annual average concentration of PM2.5 was from Factor 1 (dominated by biomass burning), followed by 27% from Factor 3 (dominated by anthropogenic emission), and 25% from Factor 2 (long-range transport/local nature source). The annually anthropogenic emission of CO and PM2.5 from 2001 to 2012 and the monthly emission from the Emission Database for Global Atmosphere Research (EDGAR) were consistent with PMF analysis and further prove that biomass burning is the dominant cause of the variation in the local air quality in mainland Southeast Asia.

RESUMO

This study examined the hypothesis that a novel prolactin-like protein gene (PRL-L) is involved in cold-induced growth of skeletal muscle in chicks. Six-day-old chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) were exposed to cold at 4°C or kept warm at 30°C for 24h. Cold exposure induced significant increases in PRL-L expression that coincided with increases in the weight of the sartorius muscle, which comprises both fast- and slow-twitch fibers. Meanwhile, no induction of PRL-L mRNA was observed in the heart, liver, kidney, brain, or fat. Myoblast cells that expressed PRL-L mRNA grew faster than untransduced cells in media containing 2% serum. These results suggested that PRL-L might be involved in in controlling cold-induced muscle growth of chicks.

RESUMO

A colorimetric assay used to quantify the non-ionic contrast medium iodixanol in sera was validated and compared with high-performance liquid chromatography. The application of this assay to estimate glomerular filtration rates (GFR) in cattle was examined. Serum iodixanol was de-iodinated by alkaline hydrolysis and the amount of released iodine was subsequently determined using a ceric arsenite method. There was a close correlation between the two methods using identical specimens. In clinically healthy cattle with different body weights, the reference value (166.3-178.8 mL/min/m(2)) based on body surface area was fairly stable as compared with that (2.13-3.63 mL/min/kg) based on body weight. Based on GFR data in healthy and renal-impaired cattle, when the GFR decreased to more than 60% of the reference value, serum urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations increased. The colorimetric assay is a simple method for the estimation of GFR in cattle and requires no expensive equipment.

RESUMO

A six-month-old Japanese Black bull was found to have no left testis in the scrotum. A fist-sized mass was palpated per rectum. Two months later, hCG was injected and blood samples were collected before and after injection. No testosterone response to hCG was observed. On the cut surface of the excised mass, most of the mass was composed of homogeneous adipose-like tissue. The rest of the surface was composed of a well-circumscribed testicular parenchyma-like tissue (18 × 16 × 15 mm). Histology revealed diffusely distributed mature adipocytes and septa of fibrous connective tissue. Neither germ cells nor spermatozoa were observed in the seminiferous tubules. A diagnosis was made of fibrolipoma and aspermatogenesis of the left cryptorchid testis.

RESUMO

We examined fluctuations in plasma tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b (TRAP5b) measured using fluorometry in conjunction with those in calcium (Ca) and other bone metabolic markers from 2 weeks prepartum to 2 weeks postpartum in 7 primiparous and 18 multiparous pregnant cows. The plasma Ca concentration decreased temporarily on the day of calving in multiparous cows only. Plasma TRAP5b peaked on the day of calving in primiparous and multiparous cows and was significantly lower in multiparous cows than in primiparous cows 2 weeks before and after parturition. Plasma hydroxyproline increased 1 week postpartum in multiparous cows. Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin tended to decrease after parturition in primiparous and multiparous cows. These results suggest that bone resorption increases around parturition in healthy parturient cows from the viewpoint of the TRAP5b activity.

RESUMO

Temperature is maintained in birds by skeletal muscle shivering as well as by non-shivering thermogenesis in a cold environment because they lack brown adipose tissue, which is a mammalian thermogenic organ. Chicks acquire cold tolerance after their skeletal muscles mature. Here, we found that muscle fibers transformed to the slow-twitch type with increasing gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1alpha (PGC-1alpha), and that the mass increased with decreasing myostatin gene expression, in the leg muscles of 7-day-old and younger chicks within 24 h of cold exposure. Muscle fibers did not transform and the mass did not increase within 24 h of cold exposure in muscles from chicks older than 8 days of age. Myostatin mRNA expression remained depressed in cold-tolerant muscles for 24 h, whereas cold-enhanced growth of the muscle continued for 48 h. Myostatin expression was depressed and muscle mass was increased only in chick leg muscles that comprised both fast- and slow-twitch fibers. These results suggest that the acute regulation of PGC-1alpha and myostatin gene expression in leg muscles is required for chicks to acquire cold tolerance up to 7 days of age.

RESUMO

This study determined the appropriate biochemical assay for measuring plasma tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b (TRAP5b) activity; this information is important to clarify the relationship between plasma TRAP5b and known biochemical bone markers in cattle. When plasma TRAP5b was measured using fluorometric and spectrophotometric methods, hemolysis products in plasma did not affect the former method. In plasma from healthy cattle, there was a good correlation (r=0.66) between the 2 methods. In age-related profiles, plasma TRAP5b (r=-0.53), hydroxyproline (HYP, r=-0.56) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP, r=-0.44) showed significant negative correlations with age; these three parameters decreased until 4 or 5 years of age and then remained constant. There were significant correlations between TRAP5b and HYP (r=0.83) or BALP (r=0.83). Our results show that the fluorometric assay can be performed with a high degree of precision and reproducibility without interference from hemolysis, and that the age-related changes in plasma TRAP5b, HYP, and BALP constitute additional background values for clinical guidance in bovine medicine.
