RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to identify predictive data on the short-term outcomes of fetuses with oligohydramnios. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of all pregnancies diagnosed with oligohydramnios was performed. RESULTS: A total of 17 fetuses (seven males, seven females, and three unknown) with oligohydramnios were treated from 2004 to 2011. Oligohydramnios was first diagnosed at a 21.6 ± 4.2 weeks gestation. Terminations of pregnancy before 22 weeks were identified in five cases, and intrauterine fetal deaths occurred in two cases. Ten neonates were born alive, five cases survived over 28 days, and five cases died within 48 hours. Prognostic factors for survival included birth weight (2,457 ± 480 grams in survivors vs. 1973 ± 124 grams in non-survivors; p < 0.05) and the mean amniotic fluid index (AFI) (2.32 ± 1.19 cm in survivors vs. 0.46 ± 0.68 cm in non-survivors;p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: All patients who survived had a mean AFI > 1.0 cm.

RESUMO

Fetal peptide hormones are essential for the development of fetus, which increase in accordance with pregnancy term. Concentration of these hormones within the feto-placental unit is normally higher than that of maternal circulation. Since these hormones are biologically active, the leakage of these hormones into the maternal circulation is regulated by degradation activity by placental aminopeptidases, in order to maintain the balance between carriage of pregnancy and onset of labor.Because the concentration of these hormones, being regulated by the amount of endogenous production and by physiological degradation by enzymes in the blood and tissue, the balance between production and degradation is a definitive element for maintaining normal gestation and term delivery. The changes of the balance between fetal angiotensin II (A-II) and vasopressin (AVP) andA-II and AVP degrading enzymes, between aminopeptidase A (APA) and placental leucine aminopeptidase( P-LAP) - in the placenta and maternal blood due to fetal stress such as hypoxia - are the provable causes of preeclampsia or preterm labor.Induction of APA and P-LAP by estradiol benzoate (E2) and progesterone (P) from placenta has been demonstrated. They are involved in the regulation of fetal peptide hormones via placental aminopeptidases in homeostasis of pregnancy.Recently it was shown that both APA and P-LAP could be potentially safe and effective drugs for preeclampsia and preterm labor. The authors' proposed sex steroid treatment with dose increasing manner by gestational week (sex steroid treatment) for severe preeclampsia and preterm labor could be candidates replacing conventional treatments. In light of lacking safe and effective medication, the proposed sex steroid treatment is worthwhile for the prospective controlled studies for the treatment of both preeclampsia and preterm labor.

RESUMO

We investigated the frequencies of cytoskeletal anomalies in metaphase-II (M-II) and incompetent [arrested at an immature metaphase (IM) stage] porcine and bovine oocytes during in vitro maturation (IVM) in relation with ageing by immunostaining and confocal microscopy. In porcine oocytes, meiotic arrest at the IM stage was associated with abnormalities of cortical actin but not with abnormal spindles. Prolongation of IVM culture to 52 h did not affect microfilament and spindle abnormalities, but reduced the microfilament-rich area overlaying the spindle. Meiotic arrest of bovine oocytes at the IM stage was associated with degenerations of microfilaments, and the frequencies of abnormal spindles were also higher than those of M-II oocytes. Ageing of bovine oocytes (IVM for 30 h) did not affect cortical microfilaments but increased the frequency of spindle alterations in both M-II and IM bovine oocytes. These results suggest that, in both species, altered ability of oocytes to polymerize F-actin might be a possible reason for the failure of polar body extrusion during IVM. Also, there seem to be differences between the two species in the sensitivity of oocytes to suffer ageing-related spindle damages.

RESUMO

In this retrospective study, we investigated the prognosis of 25 patients with resected bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) of 3.0 cm or less in diameter. We assigned a diagnosis of BAC for non-invasive tumors as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. The patients ranged in age from 47 to 78 years with an average of 64.0 years. Eighteen patients (72%) were male and 7 patients (28%) were female. All the patients underwent complete resection. As the mode of surgical resection, at least lobectomy was performed in 84%. Sections of the resected tumor were stained by HE and Elastica, and then examined by light microscopy. The tumors ranged in size from 0.5 to 3.0 cm with an average of 1.9 cm. Neither pleural involvement nor vascular permeation was seen in BACs. There was also no lymph node involvement for BACs. The 5-year disease-free survival rate of all 25 patients with BAC was 100%. The unequivocally recognizing invasive features by morphology is important for a prospect of the prognosis of resected BACs.

RESUMO

We describe color reproduction and correction of images captured by electronic cameras under multiple illumination (or lighting) conditions, relating to color device characterization for enhancing the quality of color in the obtained images. In particular, we highlight a very practical use of neuro-fuzzy modular network coactive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (CANFIS) models for this application, and discuss their strengths and weaknesses compared with other adaptive network models (e.g., multilayer perceptron (MLP)) as well as conventional lookup-table-type (TRC-matrix) methods. Our in-depth investigation based on comprehensive numerical tests with a wide variety of illumination/lighting data (180 sources of illumination) shows that the "neuro-fuzzy CANFIS with MLP local experts" possesses a remarkable generalization/approximation capacity, even under a very restricted condition where only four-illuminant data sets were permitted to be used for optimization because of efficient practical implementation subject to an industrial setting.

RESUMO

A 13-year-old girl presented with dyspnea and chest pain. Chest radiography showed a massive left pleural effusion. Computed tomography revealed a tumor of the fourth rib. A large bloody effusion was drained. Her anemia worsened (hemoglobin: 4.8 g/dl), and hemorrhagic shock ensued. An emergency thoracotomy was performed. Bleeding from the ruptured tumor was identified. The fourth rib, the tumor, and the adjacent tissues were resected. Histopathologic examination revealed a ruptured primary osteosarcoma of the rib with pleural dissemination.
