RESUMO

A massive reduction in CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning is required to limit the extent of global warming. However, carbon-based liquid fuels will in the foreseeable future continue to be important energy storage media. We propose a combination of largely existing technologies to use solar energy to recycle atmospheric CO2 into a liquid fuel. Our concept is clusters of marine-based floating islands, on which photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electrical energy to produce H2 and to extract CO2 from seawater, where it is in equilibrium with the atmosphere. These gases are then reacted to form the energy carrier methanol, which is conveniently shipped to the end consumer. The present work initiates the development of this concept and highlights relevant questions in physics, chemistry, and mechanics.

The crystal structure of the high-temperature paraelectric phase of Rochelle salt (K(+)·Na(+)·C4H4O6 (2-)·4H2O) at 308 K has been reinvestigated using synchrotron X-ray diffraction with refinement parameters R(int) = 0.0123, final (shift/e.s.d.)max = 0.019, R 1(all) = 0.0371 and wR 2(all) = 0.0608. The application of a new gas-flow sample cell designed to control both temperature and relative humidity permitted collection of data of excellent quality and enabled unrestrained refinement of all parameters, including those of the isotropic hydrogen atoms. A precise description of the structure has ensued. One K atom is disordered between two symmetry-equivalent sites; three O atoms in three of the four water molecules exhibit very strong anisotropy. Refining one O atom as a split atom was successful, yielding small improvements in the bonding parameters of several H atoms. The H atoms of all water molecules behave as single pairs. Their final U values are of moderate magnitude indicating that these atoms do not participate in the anisotropy of the parent O atoms. It is suggested that the three water O atoms are in part statically disordered, while the bonded H atoms are not. Except for the split K atom and the three water O atoms there is no evidence of general disorder in the structure.

RESUMO

Viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) was diagnosed in 5 to 24 g sized farmed Atlantic cod Gadus morhua kept in sea cages at Parisvatn, Hordaland county, on the west coast of Norway. Moderate mortality (10 to 15%) was observed, along with anorexia and abnormal swimming behaviour, such as looping or spiral swimming and reduced coordination. Nodavirus was detected by 2 different real-time RT-PCR assays, and this was later confirmed by immunohistochemistry. This is the first report of an outbreak of VER in farmed cod in Norway, and the first report that VER affect cod exceeding 5 g in size.

RESUMO

2,3-Dicyano-5,7-bismethylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (5), has been obtained as a minor product from reactions of S-nucleophiles with 5,6-di(1-bromoethyl)pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile (3), or from a condensation of 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrothiophen-3-one (4) with diaminomaleonitrile. The molecular structure of compound 5 has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction. A partial separation of charge causes a donor-acceptor type arrangement of the planar molecules in uniform parallel stacks with an interplanar spacing of 3.334(2) A at 100 K.

The structures of guluronic-acid-rich alginate in the acid and calcium forms were investigated using fiber X-ray diffraction. Data recorded for alginate fibers in the acid form show a repeat along the chain axis of c = 0.87 nm, a value that is in agreement with the one measured by Atkins et al. (Biopolymers 1973, 12, 1865) and contradicts a repeat of 0.78 nm recently suggested by Li et al. (Biomacromolecules 2007, 8, 464). In the Ca2+ form, our observations indicate that the junction zone involves dimerization of polymer chains through Ca2+ coordination according to the egg-box model. For reasons that are not understood at present, coordination of the divalent cations reduces the ability for the lateral crystallographic packing of the dimers. A proposed model for the junction zone involves polymer chains packed on a hexagonal lattice with a lattice constant a = 0.66 nm. Random pairs of chains form dimers through coordination of Ca2+ cations. Further lateral interaction between dimers is mediated by disordered Na+ and Ca2+ cations, water molecules, and hydrogen bonding.

Perturbation of the two-beam diffracted power owing to the influence of a third lattice node has been examined for various three-beam cases in a small finite germanium crystal in the vicinity of the K-absorption edge. Although the crystal was slightly imperfect, the main parts of the experimental results are very well described within the framework of the fundamental theory of X-ray diffraction in conjunction with Cromer-Liberman calculations for the resonant scattering terms. Beam divergence and dynamical block size are treated as adjustable parameters in the analysis. Observed changes in the three-beam profile asymmetry are mainly attributed to size and not to resonance effects associated with the triplet phase sum of the involved reflections. Close to the absorption edge there is however some evidence indicating that f' values should be reduced in magnitude compared to the tabulated ones.

RESUMO

The efficacy of orally administered flumequine in the treatment of experimentally induced vibriosis in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was investigated. Cod (mean +/- SD, 120 +/- 30 g) were randomly distributed to twelve tanks and bath challenged for 1 h with Listonella anguillarum serotype O2alpha, strain HI-610, using a dose of 9.2 x 10(6) CFU ml(-1). At 3 d post-challenge, medication was introduced in 10 of the groups at doses of 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 25 mg flumequine kg(-1) body weight d(-1) in duplicate. The medication was administered on Days 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 after the initiation of treatment. In challenged unmedicated fish, mortality started on Day 4 post-challenge, reaching a final cumulative mortality of 82% at Day 18. In the medicated groups, mortality started on Days 3 to 5 post-challenge, reaching final cumulative mortalities of 42, 49, 37, 37 and 23% respectively for the fish treated with 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 25 mg flumequine kg(-1) body weight d(-1). Survival of medicated fish in all groups was significantly greater than in challenged unmedicated fish (p < 0.001). Twenty-four h following the final medication, HPLC analysis found a linear relationship between doses and mean concentrations of the drug in plasma, muscle and liver.
