BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Thyroid hormones are important regulators of hepatic lipid homeostasis and whole-body energy expenditure. Recent evidence suggests that euthyroid individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) develop intrahepatic hypothyroidism that promotes progression of MASH. METHODS: A literature search was performed with Medline (PubMed), Scopus and Google Scholar electronic databases from inception till March 2024, using the following keywords: hypothyroidism and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; MASLD and thyroid function; intrahepatic hypothyroidism; TRß agonists; and resmetirom. Relevant studies were extracted that described pathogenesis of MASH in the context of thyroid functions. RESULTS: In euthyroid individuals with MASH, there is decreased conversion of prohormone thyroxine (T4) to bioactive tri-iodothyronine (T3) and increased conversion of T4 to inactive metabolite reverse T3 (rT3). Consequently, reduced levels of T3 results in impaired intrahepatic TRß signaling, a state of intrahepatic hypothyroidism, which promotes progression of MASH. Hepatic TRß activation leads to metabolically beneficial effects in the liver including mitochondrial fatty acid uptake and ß-oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis, increasing surface low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor density and lowering of circulatory LDL-cholesterol. In recent years, selective thyroid hormone mimetics that exhibit TRß-selective binding and liver-selective uptake have been designed. Resmetirom, a liver-specific thyromimetic, improves intrahepatic TRß signaling and in clinical trials significantly improved liver inflammation, fibrosis and lipid profile in patients with MASH. CONCLUSIONS: In euthyroid individuals with MASH, development of intrahepatic hypothyroidism results in further progression of the disease. In clinical trials, resmetirom treatment results in a significant improvement in steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis and is the first drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has profound adverse effects on bone health and homeostasis. MASLD appears to be associated with changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture rate. However, the data are ambiguous and conflicting. Although several studies have shown that children and adolescents with MASLD have decreased BMD, the data on the prevalence of fragility fractures among children are scarce. In adults, increasing evidence suggests that MASLD decreases BMD and increases the risk of fragility fractures, which appears to be due to deterioration of bone architecture in addition to a decrease in BMD. Effects of MASLD on bone health may also be age- and race-specific. MASLD does not seem to increase fracture risk in children and adolescents but increases the risk of fractures in elderly men, especially those of Asian origin. From a mechanistic perspective, bone remodeling is a continuous process between osteoblasts (bone-forming) and osteoclasts (bone-resorbing), with any imbalance resulting in metabolic bone disease. In individuals with MASLD, loss of anabolic insulin receptor signaling (insulin resistance) in osteoblasts and increased receptor activator of nuclear factor κB (RANK)/RANK ligand signaling in osteoclasts (proinflammatory cytokines) swings the pendulum toward accelerated bone loss. These processes are further complicated by the concomitant presence of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or sarcopenia in individuals with MASLD. This study reviews the current literature associated with the effects of MASLD on BMD and fragility fractures in children/adolescents and adults. This review also discusses the pathomechanisms that link MASLD with changes in BMD and fragility fractures.

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a chronic condition characterized by persistent pain following nerve injury. It is a challenging clinical problem to manage due to limited treatment options. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-derived conditioned medium (CM) is a cell-free product that contains the secretome of MSCs and has been shown to have therapeutic potential in various inflammatory and degenerative disorders. Several animal studies have examined the antinociceptive effects of MSCs-CM on established neuropathic pain, but none have investigated the early prevention of neuropathic pain using MSCs-CM. Therefore, in this study, we tested whether preemptive administration of MSCs-CM could attenuate the development of NP in rats. To this end, NP was induced in Wistar rats using a chronic constriction injury (CCI) model (day 0), and then the animals were divided into four groups: Sham, CCI, CCI-Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM), and CCI-CM. The CCI-CM group received 1 ml intraperitoneal administration of MSCs-CM on days - 1, 1, and 2, while the Sham, CCI, and CCI-DMEM groups received vehicle only (normal saline or DMEM). Mechanical withdrawal threshold and thermal withdrawal latency were assessed to evaluate pain sensitivities. In addition, the expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1ß) in the spinal cord tissues were measured using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results demonstrated that preemptive treatment with MSCs-CM can significantly attenuate the development of NP, as evidenced by improved mechanical withdrawal threshold and thermal withdrawal latency in the CCI-CM group compared to the CCI and CCI-DMEM groups. Furthermore, the relative gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1ß were significantly decreased in the spinal cord tissues of the CCI-CM group compared to the control groups. These findings suggest that preemptive administration of MSCs-CM can attenuate the development of NP in rats, partly due to the downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines.

In the present study, a systematic literature review (SLR) is conducted to collect, compile, and summarize the findings of previous studies in a meaningful and systematic way. This review focuses on the ideal blending ratios, mixing parameters, and the physical, thermal, and rheological performance of waste plastic-modified asphalt. It highlights the most significant research results about the challenges like phase separation, low-temperature performance, and workability for waste plastic-modified asphalt and progress in this domain. The results point out that the use of chemical and physical additives can help in the reduction of phase separation. Furthermore, this paper debates the aging characteristics and it was seen that the integration of waste plastic in asphalt has shown to slow down the aging process of the binder. The review article put forward details of various field projects across the globe utilizing waste plastic. The review concludes by presenting key findings, identifying research gaps, and suggesting future directions to advance the knowledge and to fully comprehend the possible application of waste plastic-modified bitumen in sustainable road construction.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that may involve inflammation. Inflammatory indices, such as the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and the systemic inflammation index (SII), are simple and inexpensive measures of inflammation that have been associated with various diseases. However, few studies have compared these indices and their relationships with clinical symptoms in schizophrenia. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 121 schizophrenia patients (101 males, 20 females). We measured the blood-based inflammatory indices (NLR, MLR, PLR, and SII) and assessed the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Statistical analyses were performed to examine the correlations and effects of the inflammatory indices on PANSS scores. We found that NLR, MLR, PLR, and SII were positively correlated with PANSS total score, PANSS positive score, PANSS negative score, and general psychopathology score (adjusted P < 0.02 for all correlations). Subgroup analysis showed that correlations between inflammatory indices and the clinical scores differed by gender. In males, all inflammatory indices were positively correlated with all clinical scores. On the other hand, in females, only NLR and SII were positively correlated with all clinical scores. After adjusting for confounders, we also found that NLR was a predictor of PANSS total score (ß = 23, adjusted P < 0.02), PANSS positive score (ß = 2.6, adjusted P = 0.03), PANSS negative score (ß = 6.8, adjusted P < 0.02), and PANSS general psychopathology score (ß = 13.6, adjusted P < 0.02), while SII was only a predictor for PANSS total score (ß = -0.00003, adjusted P = 0.01) and general psychopathology scores (ß = -0.00002, adjusted P < 0.02). These findings suggest that inflammation is involved in the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of schizophrenia, and that blood-based inflammatory indices may serve as screening tools or indicators for the inflammatory status and severity of symptoms of schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancer, a complex and deadly health concern today, is characterized by forming potentially malignant tumors or cancer cells. The dynamic interaction between these cells and their environment is crucial to the disease. Mathematical models can enhance our understanding of these interactions, helping us predict disease progression and treatment strategies. METHODS: In this study, we develop a fractional tumor-immune interaction model specifically for lung cancer (FTIIM-LC). We present some definitions and significant results related to the Caputo operator. We employ the generalized Laguerre polynomials (GLPs) method to find the optimal solution for the FTIIM-LC model. We then conduct a numerical simulation and compare the results of our method with other techniques and real-world data. RESULTS: We propose a FTIIM-LC model in this paper. The approximate solution for the proposed model is derived using a series of expansions in a new set of polynomials, the GLPs. To streamline the process, we integrate Lagrange multipliers, GLPs, and operational matrices of fractional and ordinary derivatives. We conduct a numerical simulation to study the effects of varying fractional orders and achieve the expected theoretical results. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study demonstrate that the optimization methods used can effectively predict and analyze complex phenomena. This innovative approach can also be applied to other nonlinear differential equations, such as the fractional Klein-Gordon equation, fractional diffusion-wave equation, breast cancer model, and fractional optimal control problems.

AIMS: To examine the efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin in the treatment of hyperglycemia in cardiac surgery patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: Cardiac surgery patients with T2D (n = 250) were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive dapagliflozin plus basal-bolus insulin (DAPA group) or basal-bolus insulin alone (INSULIN group) in the early postoperative period. The primary outcome was mean difference in daily blood glucose (BG) concentrations between groups. The major safety outcomes were the occurrence of severe ketonemia/diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hypoglycemia. All analyses were performed according to the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 61 years (range, 55-61), and 219 (87.6%) were men. Overall, the randomization blood glucose was 165 mg/dL (SD, 37) and glycated hemoglobin was 7.7% (SD, 1.4). There were no differences in mean daily BG concentrations (149 vs. 150 mg/dL), mean percentage of readings within target BG of 70-180 mg/dL (82.7% vs. 82.5%), total daily insulin dose (mean, 39 vs. 40 units/day), number of daily insulin injections (median, 3.9 vs. 4), length of hospital stay (median, 10 vs. 10 days), or hospital complications (21.6% vs. 24.8%) between the DAPA and INSULIN groups. The mean plasma ketone levels were significantly higher in the DAPA group than in the INSULIN group at day 3 (0.71 vs. 0.30 mmol/L) and day 5 (0.42 vs. 0.19 mmol/L) of randomization. Six patients in the DAPA group developed severe ketonemia, but no patient developed DKA. There were no differences in the proportion of patients with BG < 70 mg/dL (9.6% vs. 7.2%) between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Dapagliflozin complementary to basal-bolus insulin does not improve glycemia further over and above the basal-bolus insulin alone in hospitalized cardiac surgery patients. Dapagliflozin significantly increases plasma ketones levels. Safety of dapagliflozin in hospitalized patients needs further investigation. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05457933.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), activation of inflammatory processes marks the transition of simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, which can further evolve to advanced fibrosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Under the stress of chronic overnutrition, the innate immune system orchestrates hepatic inflammation through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Cytosolic PRRs that include NOD-like receptors (NLRs) are crucial for inducing inflammatory processes in the liver. METHODS: A literature search was performed with Medline (PubMed), Google Scholar and Scopus electronic databases till January 2023, using relevant keywords to extract studies describing the role of NLRs in the pathogenesis of MAFLD. RESULTS: Several NLRs operate through the formation of inflammasomes, which are multimolecular complexes that generate pro-inflammatory cytokines and induce pyroptotic cell death. A multitude of pharmacological agents target NLRs and improve several aspects of MAFLD. In this review, we discuss the current concepts related to the role of NLRs in the pathogenesis of MAFLD and its complications. We also discuss the latest research on MAFLD therapeutics functioning through NLRs. CONCLUSIONS: NLRs play a significant role in the pathogenesis of MAFLD and its consequences, especially through generation of inflammasomes, such as NLRP3 inflammasomes. Lifestyle changes (exercise, coffee consumption) and therapeutic agents (GLP-1 receptor agonists, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, obeticholic acid) improve MAFLD and its complications partly through blockade of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. New studies are required to explore these inflammatory pathways fully for the treatment of MAFLD.

Housewives are individuals who take on the caregiving role in the family in virtually every society and while discharging their duties experience serious psychological difficulties due to external environmental pollutants like air, noise, etc., which influences their efficiency of performing household activities. This study hypothesizes a causal association between perception of traffic noise and the reduction in performance of housewives in their daily household activities. A simple mediation model was utilized for the study with traffic noise perception as the exposure variable. The sensitivity to traffic noise, annoyance caused due to traffic noise, and the effect of traffic noise on housewives were evaluated using questionnaire survey. Of the respondents, 57.33% reported high level of traffic noise perception, while 65.81% reported high annoyance due to traffic noise perception. Of the respondents, 88.69% reported higher levels of agreement with regard to negative effect of traffic noise on their household activities. The results supported the hypothesis with respondents belonging to high and moderate noise perception groups reporting a higher reduction in performance as compared to those belonging to the low noise perception group at higher values of sensitivity. There was no significant direct effect among those who perceived traffic noise as high and moderate. However, the indirect path revealed that there was a significantly higher reduction in performance among those belonging to the high and moderate noise perception group as compared to those belonging to the low noise perception group while those who perceived traffic noise as high and moderate did not differ significantly only at higher levels of sensitivity. Using OGRS computational tool, a sensitivity value of 5.586 was identified as the Johnson-Neyman boundary of significance for the direct effect. The results from the study highlight the need for including environmental noise related regulations with regard to residential structures by the concerned authorities and also the need for undertaking more rigorous studies by health authorities and organizations so that the effects are minimized if not eliminated completely.

The generation of waste materials is a global concern and attempts are being made to utilize these wastes in the construction industry. The development of road infrastructure everywhere is going at a fast pace which increases the environmental degradation, fossil fuel consumption, global warming, and depletion of natural materials because of hot mix asphalt (HMA) usage. The detrimental effects of generation of waste in large quantities at a global scale and virgin material/energy consumption in HMA construction are of prime concern and need to be addressed. The construction/maintenance of pavement must be environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Use of cold bitumen emulsion mixtures (CBEMs), a type of cold mix asphalt (CMA), is a way forward for development of sustainable road infrastructure. The incorporation of wastes in CMA can be a sustainable solution to problems linked to waste generation and development of flexible pavements with HMA. This work summarizes the staging evaluation of CBEMs incorporated with waste glass (WG) and fly ash (FA) utilizing mechanical characteristics, water sensitivity and environmental impact, critical gaps in the literature, and recommendations to address those gaps. A detailed analysis on CBEMs using WG as a replacement of fine aggregate showed comparable stability/stiffness and multifold resistance to rutting than HMA. Fly ash filler in CBEMs reported extraordinary increase in stability, stiffness, rutting resistance, and water sensitivity than reference CBEM/HMA. The focus of the research area should continue on the exploration of waste materials for use in CBEMs to achieve a better environment for society and to promote sustainability in the pavement industry.

AIMS: To compare the efficacy and safety of degludec U100 versus glargine U300 for the early postoperative management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. METHODS: A total of 239 patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive a basal-bolus regimen in the early postoperative period using degludec U100 (n = 122) or glargine U300 (n = 117) as basal and glulisine before meals. The primary outcome was mean differences between groups in their daily BG concentrations. The major safety outcome was the occurrence of hypoglycemia. RESULTS: There were no differences in mean daily BG concentrations (157 vs. 162 mg/dl), mean percentage of readings within target BG of 70-180 mg/dl (74% vs. 73%), daily basal insulin dose (19 vs. 21 units/day), length of stay (median [IQR]: 9 vs. 9 days), or hospital complications (21.3% vs. 21.4%) between treatment groups. There were no differences in the proportion of patients with BG <70 mg/dl (15.6% vs. 23.1%) or <54 mg/dl (1.6% vs. 4.3%) between degludec-100 and glargine-300 groups. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with degludec U100 is as effective and safe as glargine U300 for the early postoperative hospital management of patients with T2D undergoing CABG.

Metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is characterized by the accumulation of lipids in the liver (steatosis). In predisposed individuals, liver steatosis can progress to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The pathogenesis of MAFLD is complex and incompletely understood, involving various steatogenic, pro-inflammatory, and fibrogenic processes. Hyperactivation of the innate immune system through hepatic toll-like receptors (TLRs) contributes to the pathogenesis of MAFLD. Products of intestinal microbiota and danger signals from damaged hepatocytes constitute key ligands of TLRs that promote MAFLD. Most TLRs promote development and progression of MAFLD by induction of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrogenic cytokines. Several nutraceutical and therapeutic agents improve MAFLD partly through the inhibition of hepatic TLRs. Herein, we review the available literature on hepatic TLR expression and signaling; crosstalk between gut microbiota and hepatic TLRs; and the contribution of TLRs to the pathogenesis of MAFLD. We also highlight implications for therapeutic approaches for MAFLD based on modulation of TLR signaling.

In the last few decades, the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, known as sarcopenia, has significantly increased in prevalence, becoming a major global public health concern. On the other hand, the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has also reached pandemic proportions, constituting the leading cause of hepatic fibrosis worldwide. Remarkably, while sarcopenia and NAFLD-related fibrosis are independently associated with all-cause mortality, the combination of both conditions entails a greater risk for all-cause and cardiac-specific mortality. Interestingly, both sarcopenia and NAFLD-related fibrosis share common pathophysiological pathways, including insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, hyperammonemia, alterations in the regulation of myokines, sex hormones and growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling, which may explain reciprocal connections between these two disorders. Additional contributing factors, such as the gut microbiome, may also play a role in this relationship. In skeletal muscle, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt and myostatin signaling are the central anabolic and catabolic pathways, respectively, and the imbalance between them can lead to muscle wasting in patients with NAFLD-related fibrosis. In this review, we summarize the bidirectional influence between NAFLD-related fibrosis and sarcopenia, highlighting the main potential mechanisms involved in this complex crosstalk, and we discuss the synergistic effects of both conditions in overall and cardiovascular mortality.

Tramadol, an opioid used as analgesic, can induce neurotoxic effects associated to cognitive dysfunction. Moreover, caffeine has been reported to have neuroprotective effects. In this regard, we hypothesized that administration of caffeine can modulate tramadol-induced damages in cerebellum. For this study, forty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: the control group, the tramadol group (50 mg/kg), the caffeine group (37.5 mg/kg), and the tramadol+caffeine group (50 mg/kg tramadol+37.5 mg/kg caffeine). At the end of study (day 21), after performing rotarod behavioral test, cerebellum tissue samples were removed and prepared for further evaluations including biochemical profile markers (MDA, GPx, and SOD), immunohistochemistry for Caspase-3, as well as the expression of genes involved in cellular processes such as inflammation markers (IL-1ß, HMGB1, IL-6, and TNF), apoptosis markers (Caspase-3, Caspase-8, Bax, and P21), and autophagy markers (LAMP2, ATG5, BECN1, and ATG12). Stereological evaluations were performed to determine the total volume of granular and molecular layers and white matter of cerebellum tissue and numerical density of the Purkinje cells. Our results showed that the stereological parameters, biochemical profiles (except MDA) and behavioral function were significantly higher in the tramadol+caffeine group compared to the tramadol group. Autophagy-related genes were significantly upregulated in tramadol+caffeine group compared to the tramadol group. While the expression of inflammatory and apoptosis genes, MDA level, as well as density of apoptosis cells were significantly lower in the tramadol+caffeine group compared to the tramadol group. Briefly, it can be concluded that administration of caffeine has neuroprotective effects in cerebellar damages induced by tramadol.

INTRODUCTION: Infection prevention and control (IPC) programs in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries are evolving. The objective was to characterize IPC personnel and programs in MENA countries, with special emphasis on the differences between Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and non-GCC countries. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in 2019 among IPC members of the Arab Countries Infection Control Network (AcicN). The survey focused on three domains; demographic and professional characteristics, organizational structure, and IPC program characteristics. RESULTS: A total of 269 participants aged 39.9 ± 8.4 years were included in the study. Majority of the participants were females (67.7%), nurses (63.7%), and of Middle-Eastern origin (57.3%). 32.2% of the participants were certified by the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC). Only 22.7% of participants were satisfied with their current compensation. Surveillance was the most time-consuming task (26.6%), followed by isolation (12.4%), and investigation of outbreaks (12.1%). Majority of the facilities had at least one IPC personnel per 100 beds (60.9%), supported IPC program (63.9%), a formal IPC committee (93.7%), and an IPC plan (91.4%). Compared with non-GCC countries, GCC countries had significantly more frequent CBIC certification (p = 0.003), training in cleaning/sterilization (p = 0.010), supported IPC program (p = 0.010), formal IPC committee (p = 0.001), IPC plan (p = 0.001), and higher number of IPC personnel per 100 beds (p = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS: MENA countries had generally satisfactory IPC programs and to a lesser extent staffing, with considerable variability between countries with different resources.

Background: Data on the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines in patients with malignancy are immature. In this paper, we assessed the literature involving the use of COVID-19 vaccines in cancer patients and reported the seroconversion rates as the main outcome and severity of COVID-19 infection and side effects following COVID-19 vaccination as the secondary outcomes. Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. Searches were conducted in electronic websites, databases, and journals, including Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from January 01, 2019, to November 30, 2021. Studies reporting data on the safety and efficacy of COVID vaccine in cancer patients using any human samples were included. The risk of bias was assessed using the NEWCASTLE-OTTAWA scale in the included studies. Results: A total of 724 articles were identified from databases, out of which 201 articles were duplicates and were discarded. Subsequently, 454 articles were excluded through initial screening of the titles and abstracts. Moreover, 41 studies did not report the precise seroconversion rate either based on the type of cancer or after injection of a second dose of COVID vaccine. Finally, 28 articles met all the inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. The overall seroconversion rates after receiving a second dose of COVID-19 vaccine, based on type of cancer were 88% (95% CI, 81%-92%) and 70% (95% CI, 60%-79%) in patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies, respectively. Conclusion: Overall, we conclude that vaccination against COVID-19 in patients with active malignancies using activated and inactivated vaccines is a safe and tolerable procedure that is also accompanied by a high efficacy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common condition, especially among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Presence of T2D increases the risk of progression of simple steatosis to more severe liver conditions, such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis (NASH-fibrosis). Since majority of patients with T2D are managed by diabetologists (including physicians and endocrinologists), their roles in the management of coexisting NAFLD are not well defined, partly due to lack of unambiguous guidelines. METHODS: A literature search was performed with Medline (PubMed), Scopus and Google Scholar electronic databases till January 2022, using relevant keywords (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and diabetologist; screening of NASH; management of NASH) to extract relevant studies describing prevention and screening of NAFLD/NASH, especially in people with T2D. RESULTS: Diabetologists have two main roles for the management of patients with T2D and coexisting NAFLD. The most important role is to prevent the development of NASH-fibrosis in patients with simple steatosis (primary prevention). This can be achieved by reinforcing the importance of lifestyle measures, and by early use of glucose-lowering agents with beneficial effects on the liver. The second important role of diabetologists is to screen all patients with T2D for liver fibrosis and compensated cirrhosis, and provide appropriate referral for timely management of complications (secondary prevention). CONCLUSION: Diabetologists can play a central role in mitigating the epidemic of NAFLD in individuals with T2D. However, diabetologists need to be aware about their roles in NASH-fibrosis prevention and screening. Furthermore, longitudinal studies should explore the role of newer glucose-lowering drugs in the primary prevention of NASH-fibrosis in individuals with coexisting T2D and simple steatosis.
