RESUMO

COVID-19 can cause a wide range of ocular manifestations. The most common ocular manifestation is conjunctivitis. Neuro-ophthalmic presentations of COVID-19 are rare. Case reports suggest that COVID-19 infection can cause cranial nerve palsy, including nerves that regulate ocular movements. The present studypresented a case of fourth nerve palsy in a healthy and asymptomatic COVID-19-infected child. A healthy 10-year-old boy was referred to our eye clinic with a complaint of recent abnormal head posture and squint. His past medical history was unremarkable, and he had not received any medication or vaccinations within the last few weeks. No history of ocular or head trauma was observed. The patient was afebrile and had no respiratory symptoms. A comprehensive ocular examination was performed. All examinations, including slit-lamp, pupils, eyelids, and optic nerve heads, were normal. In ocular motor evaluations, left eye hyperdeviation was observed. Because of the history of COVID-19 in the mother of the child, he was referred to an infectious disease specialist and was tested for SARS-COV-2 with a nasopharyngeal swab specimen. The test was positive and SARS-COV-2 was detected. In addition, the patient was referred to a pediatric neurology department. Brain and orbital MRI was performed, and it was unremarkable. The post-viral fourth nerve palsy is uncommon, and post-COVID-19 has not been reported before. Clinicians should consider this infection in any recent strabismus in pediatrics. The children rarely complain of diplopia, and a recent abnormal head posture may be a sign of acquired strabismus.

The introduction of cysteamine functionality, referred to as Q-ZIF-67-SH, was successfully achieved through postsynthetic modification while maintaining the structural and thermal stability of the quasi metal-organic framework Q-ZIF-67. By subjecting ZIF-67 to controlled partial deligandation at 310 °C under an air atmosphere, a substantial number of unsaturated cobalt sites were generated within the quasi ZIF-67 (Q-ZIF-67) structure. These unsaturated cobalt sites facilitated effective coordination with cysteamine, resulting in the development of the thiol-functionalized framework Q-ZIF-67-SH. The potential of these metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of hazardous Hg(II) was investigated. Various factors, such as the type of sorbent, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of Hg(II), and presence of coexisting ions, were thoroughly examined and comprehensively explained. Thiol-anchored MOF significantly enhanced the efficiency of Hg(II) removal, achieving an impressive removal rate of up to 99.2%. Furthermore, it demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of 994 mg g-1 and a distribution coefficient of 2.5 × 106 mL g-1. A good correspondence with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model was observed through the fitting of adsorption kinetics and the isotherm model. The thermodynamic data strongly indicate that the adsorptive removal of Hg(II) is characterized by endothermicity and spontaneity. This signifies that the process is energetically favorable and has potential for efficient Hg(II) removal. Therefore, the Q-ZIF-67-SH sorbent emerges as a promising and advantageous option for the removal of Hg(II) from water.

Key Clinical Message: If an intraocular lens (IOL) is incorrectly labeled, problems can arise for surgeons and patients. Precise biometry is important to accurately determine the IOL power and prevent the implantation of the wrong IOL. Labeling and verifying IOLs with accuracy is crucial to ensuring the best possible results of cataract surgery. Abstract: Mislabeling of IOLs can cause unpredictable problems for surgeons. However, we can prevent incorrect IOLs by using precise biometry to determine accurate IOL power and safely implant the correct IOL. A 50-year-old female with no medical or ocular history came to our clinic complaining of decreased vision in both eyes that had been ongoing for several months. After being diagnosed with cataracts, primary angle closure suspect, and high hyperopia, the patient underwent phacoemulsification surgery. A posterior chamber IOL was implanted, and visco-goniosynechialysis was performed. During follow-up appointments, it was discovered that the patient had an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/50 in her right eye, which was corrected to 20/20 with a + 7.00 D lens. Upon further evaluation, it was determined that the source of the error was due to a manufacturing mislabeling of the IOL power. The patient then underwent successful IOL exchange surgery, and her best-corrected visual acuity became 20/20 with no significant refraction. This case highlights an uncommon source of refractive surprise after phacoemulsification surgery, successfully managed with IOL exchange surgery using the same IOL power from a different brand.

Defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with outstanding structural and chemical features have become excellent candidates for specific separation applications. The introduction of structural defects in MOFs as an efficient approach to manipulate their functionality provides excellent opportunities for the preparation of MOF-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). However, the use of this strategy to adjust the properties and develop the separation performance of gas separation membranes is still in its early stages. Here, a novel defect-engineered MOF (quasi ZrFum or Q-ZrFum) was synthesized via a controlled thermal deligandation process and incorporated into a CO2-philic 6FDA-durene polyimide (PI) matrix to form Q-ZrFum loaded MMMs. Defect-engineered MOFs and fabricated MMMs were investigated regarding their characteristic properties and separation performance. The incorporation of defects into the MOF structure increases the pore size and provides unsaturated active metal sites that positively affect CO2 molecule transport. The interfacial compatibility between the Q-ZrFum particles and the PI matrix increases via the deligandation process, which improves the mechanical strength of Q-ZrFum loaded membranes. MMM containing 5 wt.% of defect-engineered Q-ZrFum exhibits excellent CO2 permeability of 1308 Barrer, which increased by 99 % compared to the pure PI membrane (656 Barrer) at a feed pressure of 2 bar. CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivity reached 44 and 26.6 which increased by about 70 and 16 %, respectively. This study emphasizes that defect-engineered MOFs can be promising candidates for use as fillers in the preparation of MMMs for the future development of membrane-based gas separation applications.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The visual system plays an important role in the development of the vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR). In clinical practice, the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) test is used to assess contralateral VOR. BACKGROUND: This study sought to compare the oVEMP in patients with anisometropic, strabismic, and mixed amblyopia using unilateral and bilateral (simultaneous binaural) stimulation. METHODS: Forty-two amblyopic patients (20 males and 22 females) with a mean age of 10.48 ± 4.00 years (range: 5 - 20 years) were examined. The Titmus stereopsis test, alternate cover test, and best-corrected visual acuity were evaluated. Patients were divided into three groups: anisometropic, strabismic, and mixed amblyopia. The oVEMP responses including the amplitude of electrical activity (n1-p1 complex) and the latencies (n1 and p1) of the VOR responses were recorded under unilateral and bilateral stimulations. RESULTS: In the anisometropic and strabismic group, n1 latency was significantly faster in the non-amblyopic eyes compared to amblyopic eyes (Z = -2.04, p = 0.042, andZ = -2.54, p = 0.024 respectively). Mean p1 latency was significantly faster in the non-amblyopic eyes compared to the amblyopic eyes of the strabismic group (Z = -2.31, p = 0.011)In all groups, the p1 latency was faster in the non-amblyopic eye compared to bilateral stimulation (all, p < 0.05). In all groups, the n1-p1 amplitude was not significantly different between the two eyes, and between each eye and bilateral stimulation (all, p > 0.05). No significant correlation was found between the depth of amblyopia and n1 and p1 responses (all, p > 0.05). In all groups there was no significant difference in the latency of n1 and p1 between the amblyopic eye and bilateral stimulation (all, p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Regardless of its type, amblyopia affects vestibular-ocular reflex responses. Further research is warranted to clarify the effect of the disease and its treatment on the ocular-vestibular system.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term effects of inferior oblique myectomy on the retinal neurovasculature, choroidal thickness, and choroidal vascularity index at the macula. METHODS: Patients older than 5 years who were candidates for inferior oblique muscle myectomy surgery participated in the study. Patients with any systemic or ocular disease that could affect the macular neurovasculature were not included in the study. After recording demographic data, including age and gender, and conducting a complete ophthalmic examination, macular optical coherence tomography (OCT), enhanced depth imaging OCT, and OCT angiography imaging (AngioVue software (V.2017.1.0.151; Optovue, Inc) were performed before (1 day to 1 week) and in the specific time intervals (1 week, 1 month, and 3 months) after the surgery for all participants. RESULTS: Eighteen patients (13 male and 5 female) who underwent inferior oblique muscle myectomy, with a mean ± standard deviation age of 24.22 ± 18.14 years, were included in this study. The baseline mean ± standard deviation of subfoveal choroidal luminal area and subfoveal total choroidal area were 0.390 ± 0.03 and 0.539 ± 0.04 mm2, respectively. The changing pattern of the subfoveal choroidal vascularity index and subfoveal choroidal luminal area was statistically significant (P = .013 and .035, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Inferior oblique myectomy can lead to changes in choroid hemodynamics in the short term. However, these changes seem to be temporary. PURPOSE: To investigate the visual, refractive, and biomechanical outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with two different cap thicknesses. METHODS: Thirty-four patients were included in this prospective, randomized, contralateral eye study. Subjects were randomized to receive SMILE surgery with a 110-m cap thickness in one eye and 145-µm cap thickness in the fellow eye. Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, contrast sensitivity (CS), total higherorder aberrations (THOAs) and corneal biomechanical properties were compared 3 months after surgery. RESULTS: Postoperative refractive and visual outcomes, CS and THOAs were similar between the two groups ( P > 0.05 for all parameters). At 3 months postoperatively, there was a significant difference in Corvis ST Biomechanical Index (CBI); stiffness parameter at first applanation (SP A1), and Integrated Radius between the two groups (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Eyes with thicker SMILE corneal caps showed no advantage regarding visual acuity, CS and THOAs over eyes with thinner caps. However, higher cap thickness may result in better corneal biomechanical properties postoperatively.

BACKGROUND: The aim is to investigate the change in aberrations following strabismus surgery in patients with horizontal strabismus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included patients who underwent surgery for horizontal strabismus. The patients were assessed preoperatively and 1 month and 3 months after the surgery, in terms of logMAR best-corrected visual acuity, eye deviation, spherical equivalent refractive error, tomographic and aberrometric corneal changes. Corneal tomography was performed using Orbscan II device. Wavefront analyses were performed using Bausch and Lomb Zywave II. RESULTS: A total of 25 patients (48 eyes) with exotropia or esotropia were entered in this study. Mean values of exotropia in the distance and near deviations were reported as 31.42 ± 7.13 and 28.82 ± 6.96 prism diopters (PD), respectively. Mean scores of esotropia in the distance and near deviations were 25.22 ± 5.41 and 30.45 ± 9.4 PD, respectively. Evaluation of irregularity in 5 mm zone, horizontal coma, spherical aberration changes, and root mean square of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in 6 mm, and HOA w/o Z 400 changes showed that there was a significant difference before the intervention and 1 month after the surgery (P < 0.05). However, no difference was observed in the aforementioned variables before and 3 months after the intervention (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Results of the present study indicated a transient increase in HOAs and corneal irregularity following strabismus surgery on horizontal eye muscles that returned to the baseline after 3 months.

Inadequate representation of non-European ancestry populations in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has limited opportunities to isolate functional variants. Fine-mapping in multi-ancestry populations should improve the efficiency of prioritizing variants for functional interrogation. To evaluate this hypothesis, we leveraged ancestry architecture to perform comparative GWAS and fine-mapping of obesity-related phenotypes in European ancestry populations from the UK Biobank (UKBB) and multi-ancestry samples from the Population Architecture for Genetic Epidemiology (PAGE) consortium with comparable sample sizes. In the investigated regions with genome-wide significant associations for obesity-related traits, fine-mapping in our ancestrally diverse sample led to 95% and 99% credible sets (CS) with fewer variants than in the European ancestry sample. Lead fine-mapped variants in PAGE regions had higher average coding scores, and higher average posterior probabilities for causality compared to UKBB. Importantly, 99% CS in PAGE loci contained strong expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) in adipose tissues or harbored more variants in tighter linkage disequilibrium (LD) with eQTLs. Leveraging ancestrally diverse populations with heterogeneous ancestry architectures, coupled with functional annotation, increased fine-mapping efficiency and performance, and reduced the set of candidate variants for consideration for future functional studies. Significant overlap in genetic causal variants across populations suggests generalizability of genetic mechanisms underpinning obesity-related traits across populations.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) and beta thalassemia major (ßTM) are multisystemic, genetically inherited diseases. They are caused by mutations of hemoglobin, which ultimately cause abnormal functioning of the red blood cells. The morbidity and mortality rates of these diseases are significant, as they may result in severe complications, some of which are quite fatal; hence, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. The purpose of this study is to collect patients' data in terms of their manifestations and overall clinical picture and correlate them to the laboratory parameters with emphasis on their transfusion dependence and its sequelae in King Fahd Hospital of the University (KFHU), Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. After obtaining ethical approval from the institutional review board and in collaboration with the blood bank, patients' data were retrospectively collected from the hospital's database and categorized into two disease groups. Accordingly, data related to the biological and demographic information, clinical picture pattern, laboratory investigations, and therapeutic measures, with emphasis on blood transfusion as a treatment option, were gathered and analyzed. Eventually, the aforementioned data aspects were assessed for the probability of correlations, which were proven to be present to some level as an answer to our cohort study's question. Such findings, which will be depicted later in this study, might represent a ground for having a more comprehensive and extensive approach in terms of the general evaluation of patients with SCD and ßTM based on the established level of correlation. During the course of conducting our research, we encountered some limitations, including the sample size and scarce data available during the process of data collection.

BACKGROUND: Adipokines are hormones secreted from adipose tissue and are associated with cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). Functional differences between adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, and resistin) are known, but inconsistently reported associations with CMD and lack of studies in Hispanic populations are research gaps. We investigated the relationship between subclinical atherosclerosis and multiple adipokine measures. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (N = 624; mean age = 50; Female = 70.8%) were utilized to assess associations between adipokines [continuous measures of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, leptin-to-adiponectin ratio (LAR), and adiponectin-resistin index (ARI)] and early atherosclerosis [carotid-intima media thickness (cIMT)]. We adjusted for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, cytokines, fasting blood glucose levels, blood pressure, lipid levels, and medication usage in the fully adjusted linear regression model. We conducted sexes-combined and sex-stratified analyses to account for sex-specificity and additionally tested whether stratification of participants by their metabolic status (metabolically elevated risk for CMD as defined by having two or more of the following conditions: hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation vs. not) influenced the relationship between adipokines and cIMT. RESULTS: In the fully adjusted analyses, adiponectin, leptin, and LAR displayed significant interaction by sex (p < 0.1). Male-specific associations were between cIMT and LAR [ß(SE) = 0.060 (0.016), p = 2.52 × 10-4], and female-specific associations were between cIMT and adiponectin [ß(SE) = 0.010 (0.005), p = 0.043] and ARI [ß(SE) = - 0.011 (0.005), p = 0.036]. When stratified by metabolic health status, the male-specific positive association between LAR and cIMT was more evident among the metabolically healthy group [ß(SE) = 0.127 (0.015), p = 4.70 × 10-10] (p for interaction by metabolic health < 0.1). However, the female-specific associations between adiponectin and cIMT and ARI and cIMT were observed only among the metabolically elevated risk group [ß(SE) = 0.014 (0.005), p = 0.012 for adiponectin; ß(SE) = - 0.015 (0.006), p = 0.013 for ARI; p for interaction by metabolic health < 0.1]. CONCLUSION: Associations between adipokines and cIMT were sex-specific, and metabolic health status influenced the relationships between adipokines and cIMT. These heterogeneities by sex and metabolic health affirm the complex relationships between adipokines and atherosclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: In thyroid eye disease (TED), all ocular components and adnexa such as extraocular muscles, orbital adipose tissues, eyelids, and tear glands could be affected. This study aimed to study the orbital biomechanical parameters in patients with TED, in terms of differences with healthy individuals and correlation with clinical findings, using Corvis ST (CST, Oculus Wetzlar). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 26 consecutive patients with TED were recruited. Demographic data were collected, and patients with TED were assessed for exophthalmos, intraocular pressure, and clinical activity score. Biomechanical response parameters of one randomly-chosen eye of each patient, including whole eye movement length (WEMl) and time (WEMt), were evaluated by the CST, and data were compared between patients and age- and gender-matched healthy controls. RESULTS: The mean age was 39.88 ± 11.61 years old for patients with TED and 34.38 ± 8.57 years old for the healthy subjects. Nine out of 26 patients with TED and nine of 26 healthy individuals were male. The median duration of thyroid disease was 36 (IQR 54) months and the median duration of thyroid ophthalmopathy was 27 (IQR 27) months. Four out of 26 patients (7.7%) had active disease. The mean WEMl was 206.15 ± 61.58 µm in the TED group and 254.23 ± 64.01 µm in the healthy group, the difference of which was statistically significant (p = 0.008). The median of WEMt was 20.90 (1.15) msec in the TED group and 21.45 (0.93) msec in the healthy group (p < 0.001). Also, the mean of WEMl and WEMt were lower in patients with active disease compared to patients with quiescent disease. CONCLUSION: The CST-derived WEMl was significantly smaller in patients with thyroid eye disease compared to normal subjects. The WEMl and WEMt were relatively shorter in the patients with active TED compared to the patients with quiescent TED, although small numbers of patients with active TED limits took a statistically significant conclusion. WEMl and WEMt might be useful in evaluating the compliance of the orbit in patients with TED.

BACKGROUND: Arabic-speaking refugee and migrant populations form a significant proportion of Australia's population. Despite high levels of psychological distress among Arabic-speaking populations, low uptake of mental health services has been demonstrated. Evidence suggests poor levels of mental health literacy (MHL) and high levels of stigmatising attitudes among Arabic-speaking populations, which may act as barriers to help-seeking behaviours. This study aimed to explore the relationships between measures of mental illness stigma, socio-demographic factors and psychological distress, as well as to determine the factors associated with MHL (i.e., correct recognition of mental illness and knowledge of causes) among Arabic-speaking refugee and migrant populations in Australia. METHODS: Participants were recruited from non-government organisations in Greater Western Sydney that provided support services to Arabic-speaking migrants and/or refugees. As this study is nested within an interventional pilot study evaluating a culturally tailored MHL program, only the pre-intervention survey responses for 53 participants were utilised. The survey measured key aspects of MHL (i.e., recognition of mental illness, knowledge of causes), levels of psychological distress (using K10 scale), and stigmatising attitudes towards mental illness (using Personal Stigma Subscales and Social Distance Scale). RESULTS: The Personal Stigma subscale of 'Dangerous/unpredictable' was strongly positively correlated with participants' K10 psychological distress scores and strongly negatively correlated with years of education completed. There were moderate negative correlations between two Personal Stigma subscales ('Dangerous/unpredictable' and 'I-would-not-tell-anyone') and the length of stay in Australia. Being female was associated with an increase in personal stigma demonstrated by higher scores for 'I-would-not-tell-anyone' subscale than males. Similarly, increase in age was associated with a decrease on scores of the personal stigma 'Dangerous/unpredictable'. CONCLUSIONS: While future research with larger sample size are needed, the study findings can be considered as adding to the evidence base on mental illness related stigma in Arabic-speaking populations. Further, this study provides a starting point in developing the rationale for why population sub-group specific interventions are required to address mental illness stigma and improve MHL among Arabic-speaking refugee and migrant populations in Australia.

Purpose: To look for causative genetic mutations in a series of Iranian families with strabismus. In addition, we systematically reviewed all the published articles regarding the role of genetic variations in primary and nonsyndromic comitant strabismus. Methods: Four families with a history of multiple cases of primary and nonsyndromic comitant strabismus were enrolled in this study. Polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing of exons 23, 11, and 3 of the Abelson helper integration site 1 (AHI1), nebulin (NEB), and paired box 3 (PAX3) genes were performed, respectively. One offspring of a consanguineous marriage underwent whole-exome sequencing (WES) to look for possible causative variants. To conduct a systematic review, we thoroughly searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Knowledge extracting relevant publications, released by April 2021. Results: We examined four Iranian strabismus pedigrees with multiple affected offspring in different generations. Among these 17 participants, 10 family members had strabismus and 7 were healthy. Sanger sequencing did not reveal a causative mutation. Therefore, to further investigate, one affected offspring was chosen for WES. The WES study demonstrated two possible variants in MYO5B and DHODH genes. These genetic variants showed high allele frequency in our population and are thought to be polymorphisms in our series of Iranian families. Conclusions: We demonstrated that mutations in AHI1, NEB, and PAX3 genes were not common in a series of Iranian patients with familial strabismus. Moreover, by performing WES, we revealed that two variants of uncertain significance as possible causative variants for strabismus are not related to this disease in our population.

Purpose: To review the principles and different techniques of minimally invasive procedures in strabismus surgery. Methods: This is a narrative review on minimally invasive procedures in strabismus surgery including general aspects and different new modifications on conventional strabismus surgery. We reviewed 24 articles published between 1993 and 2020. Results: Minimal invasive procedures could be categorized into two subsets: one which minimizes conjunctival opening size and another which minimizes the muscle manipulations. Different conjunctival approaches have been introduced, such as Cul-de-sac and minimally invasive strabismus surgery incisions. Furthermore, there are different techniques for extraocular muscle weakening, strengthening, and transposition, such as mini-tenotomy, plication, mini-plication, Nishida, and modified Nishida procedures. Moreover, there are some techniques for handling strabismus in heavy eyes with high myopia and using adjustable sutures for strabismus correction. Conclusions: Minimally invasive procedures in strabismus surgery consist of surgical procedures that minimize tissue disruption, speed up rehabilitation, and often ultimate better outcomes. These techniques could be replaced traditional methods to reduce conjunctival and lid swelling in the direct postoperative period.

Bupivacaine (BUP) is an anesthetic from the family of aminoacyl anesthetics and has the highest myotoxicity among other groups of anesthetics. Intramuscular injection of BUP first causes acute libriform lysis and subsequently with the regeneration process, stronger myofibrils are formed within 3-4 weeks. Satellite cells, which are actually myogenic stem cells, are preserved in the early stage and during the destruction of muscle fibers. In fact, these cells are responsible for the subsequent regeneration of fibers. BUP is one of the few medicines that is able to increase muscle strength. In animal studies on rabbits, a decrease has been observed in the diameter of the global layer in the first week and an increase in type-I myosin occurs after 60 days, especially in the global muscle layer. There are numerous studies according to BUP injection for the non-surgical management of horizontal strabismus. To intensify the effects of the injection, botulinum toxin injection can also be used simultaneously in the antagonist muscles. In general, although the rate of improvement in strabismus varied among different studies, BUP injection alone corrects about 5-8 prism diopters. Together with botulinum toxin, BUP corrects about 15 prism diopters. The stability of this improvement is up to 10 years after injection. No significant difference has been observed in response rate between patients with esotropia and exotropia. Unlike the large molecule of botulinum toxin, which spreads slowly to its site of action, the BUP molecule is small and must be in direct contact with myofibrils before absorption into the bloodstream to exert its effect. Therefore, the injection volume should be about 3 cc with a concentration of 0.75 g per deciliter. Although BUP is promising non-surgical strabismus management, especially in small angle and residual horizontal strabismus, however, it has its own limitations. The need for direct infusion of a relatively large volume of BUP may be one of its major drawbacks that limits its usage in an office method.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent variation in adiposity and inflammation suggests potential shared functional pathways and pleiotropic disease underpinning. Yet, exploration of pleiotropy in the context of adiposity-inflammation has been scarce, and none has included self-identified Hispanic/Latino populations. Given the high level of ancestral diversity in Hispanic American population, genetic studies may reveal variants that are infrequent/monomorphic in more homogeneous populations. METHODS: Using multi-trait Adaptive Sum of Powered Score (aSPU) method, we examined individual and shared genetic effects underlying inflammatory (CRP) and adiposity-related traits (Body Mass Index [BMI]), and central adiposity (Waist to Hip Ratio [WHR]) in HLA participating in the Population Architecture Using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) cohort (N = 35,871) with replication of effects in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (CCHC) which consists of Mexican American individuals. RESULTS: Of the > 16 million SNPs tested, variants representing 7 independent loci were found to illustrate significant association with multiple traits. Two out of 7 variants were replicated at statistically significant level in multi-trait analyses in CCHC. The lead variant on APOE (rs439401) and rs11208712 were found to harbor multi-trait associations with adiposity and inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study demonstrate the importance of considering pleiotropy for improving our understanding of the etiology of the various metabolic pathways that regulate cardiovascular disease development.

This investigation aimed to assess the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Cedrus libani and Pinus brutia leaves. The anti-inflammatory property was evaluated by Human Red Blood Cells (HRBC) membrane stabilization assay and Albumin denaturation assay using Sodium diclofenac as a positive control. To evaluate the analgesic property, formalin and tail flick tests were carried out using ethanolic extracts at a dose of 30 mg/kg and gel containing 2% (w/v) of ethanolic extract of each plant. Diclofenac sodium, diclofenac gel 1% and lidocaine gel 2 % were used as positive controls. Results: The effect of inhibiting hemolysis was observed at concentrations (2.5-12.5) µg/ml for P. brutia, and (2.5-25) µg/ml for C. libani. Moreover, albumin denaturation test showed protection effect for both plant extracts with IC50 of 47.74 and 81.50 µg/ml for C. libani and P. brutia extract, consecutively. In Formalin test, both extracts could significantly reduce paw licking time, and in tail flick test, each plant extract gel showed greater efficacy than diclofenac gel by calculating the maximum possible effect (MPE %) for both extracts and Diclofenac. Conclusion: We concluded that both extracts showed in vitro anti-inflammatory activity at different concentrations when compared to standard drug of diclofenac as well as analgesic activity in formalin and tail flick tests.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety, efficiency, short term stability, and sensory results of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in anisometropic in non-compliant children with correction. METHODS: Twelve eyes of 12 children with an age range: 6-17 years and anisometropic amblyopia who underwent PRK under general anesthesia to correct the dioptric difference between the eyes were included in this study. A complete ophthalmic assessment including refractive status, uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA & CDVA), and binocular vision status using the Worth 4-dot test and stereopsis were performed before and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after PRK. RESULTS: The mean preoperative CDVA was 0.34 ± 0.24 LogMAR which showed a statistically significant improvement at 12 months (0.20 ± 0.19, p = 0.024) after surgery compared to the preoperative assessment. (p = 0.003) The mean preoperative UDVA was 0.63 ± 0.24 LogMAR that increased to 0.44 ± 0.24, 0.32 ± 0.16, 0.25 ± 0.19, and 0.25 ± 0.19 LogMAR at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after PRK, respectively. One to three lines improvement in UDVA and CDVA was seen in 10 (83.4%) and 8 eyes (66.7%); while one line UDVA and CDVA loss was seen in one (8.3%) and one (8.3%) eye and unchanged UDVA and CDVA was seen in 1 (8.3%) and 3 eyes (25%), respectively. The mean preoperative stereoacuity was 341.9 ± 245.7 s of arc, which significantly improved to 166.6 ± 87.5 s of arc 12 months after PRK. (p = 0.012). CONCLUSION: PRK was an effective surgical alternative to improve visual acuity and stereopsis in anisometropic children who did not cooperate with conventional methods of amblyopia therapy.

Purpose: To report a case of medial rectus plication for the management of dissociated horizontal deviation (DHD). Methods: We introduce medial rectus plication for improving the control of exoshift of DHD. Results: A 20-year-old woman with a chief complaint of left eye outward deviation since childhood was referred to the strabismus clinic. The diagnosis of DHD was made according to the detection of asymmetric slow abduction of the left eye (50 prism diopter) during visual inattention or cover testing. The left lateral rectus (LR) was recessed 8 mm with a posterior fixation suture (PFS). In the early postoperative period, the control of DHD improved; however, after 6 months, the patient and her parents complained of frequent observation of the exoshift of the left eye (30 prism diopter). For better control of DHD, medial rectus plication (5 mm) of the left eye was considered the second operation. After 12 months of follow-up, the control of deviation improved, and there was no manifest deviation. Conclusions: The literature's recommended procedure for unilateral DHD without a duction deficit is to perform a unilateral LR muscle recession. Some authors have proposed adding PFS to augment the effect of LR recessions. Although recurrence may occur, medial rectus plication can be considered one of the reversible options and can be used in recurrences of DHD after the first surgical procedure.
