RESUMO

Dehumidifying air via refrigerant cooling method consumes a tremendous amount of energy. Independent humidity control systems using desiccants have been introduced to improve energy efficiency. This research aimed to find an alternative to the commonly used solid desiccant, silica gel, which has weak physical adsorption properties. It also aimed to overcome the limitation of liquid desiccants that may affect indoor air quality and cause corrosion. This study reports on the synthesis of poly(vinyl alcohol-co-acrylic acid), P(VA-AA), through solution polymerisation by hydrolysing poly(vinyl acetate-co-acrylic acid), P(VAc-AA). This viable copolymer was then incorporated with graphene oxide (GO) at different concentrations (0 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, 2 wt.% and 5 wt.%) to enhance the adsorption-desorption process. The samples were tested for their ability to adsorb moisture at different levels of relative humidity (RH) and their capability to maintain optimum sorption capacity over 10 repeated cycles. The nanocomposite film with 2% GO, P(VA-AA)/GO2, exhibited the highest moisture sorption capacity of 0.2449 g/g for 60-90% RH at 298.15 K, compared to its pristine copolymer, which could only adsorb 0.0150 g/g moisture. The nanocomposite desiccant demonstrated stable cycling stability and superior desorption in the temperature range of 318.15-338.15 K, with up to 88% moisture desorption.

RESUMO

The need for a mild, low-cost, green environment that is able to produce exotic properties of output nanostructures is appealing nowadays. Employing these requirements, the copper (Cu)-based oxide nanostructures have been successfully synthesised via one-pot reaction using biocompatible natural polyphenol, tannic acid (TA) as both the reducing agent and stabiliser at 60, 70 and 80 °C. The structural and optical studies disclosed the effect of TA on the surface morphology, phase purity, elemental composition, optical microstrain and optical intrinsic energy of this mixed Cu2O and CuO nanostructures. The optically based method describes the comparative details of the multi-band gap in the presence of more than one element with overlapping spectra from the first-derivative absorbance curve [Formula: see text] and the exponential absorbance of Urbach tail energy [Formula: see text] towards the conventional Tauc bandgap. The [Formula: see text] demonstrates that the pronounced effect of TA that Cu2O and CuO nanostructures creates much sensitive first-derivative bandgap output compared to the Tauc bandgap. The results also show that the [Formula: see text] reduced as the temperature reaches 70 °C and then experienced sudden increase at 80 °C. The change in the pattern is parallel to the trend observed in the Williamson-Hall microstrain and is evident from the variations of the mean crystallite size [Formula: see text] which is also a cause response to the change in temperature or pH. Therefore, the current work has elucidated that the structural and optical correlations on the as-synthesised Cu2O and CuO nanostructures in the presence of TA were the combined reaction of pH change and the ligand complexation reactions. The acquired results suggest a more comprehensive range of studies to further understand the extent relationship between the physical and optical properties of TA functionalised Cu-based oxide nanostructures.

RESUMO

This paper describes the process of developing a microgripper that is capable of high precision and fidelity manipulation of micro-objects. The design adopts the concept of flexure-based hinges on its joints to provide the rotational motion, thus eliminating the inherent nonlinearities associated with the application of conventional rigid hinges. A combination of two modeling techniques, namely, pseudorigid body model and finite element analysis was utilized to expedite the prototyping procedure, which leads to the establishment of a high performance mechanism. A new hybrid compliant structure integrating cantilever beam and flexural hinge configurations within microgripper mechanism mainframe has been developed. This concept provides a novel approach to harness the advantages within each individual configuration while mutually compensating the limitations inherent between them. A wire electrodischarge machining technique was utilized to fabricate the gripper out of high grade aluminum alloy (Al 7075T6). Experimental studies were conducted on the model to obtain various correlations governing the gripper performance as well as for model verification. The experimental results demonstrate high level of compliance in comparison to the computational results. A high amplification characteristic and maximum achievable stroke of 100 microm can be achieved.
