RESUMO

This study investigates the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth at sectoral levels in Bangladesh, employing a panel study framework. Utilizing sectoral-level panel data spanning six sectors from 2007-08 to 2018-19, the analysis is conducted using Panel Vector Error Correction Model (Panel VECM). Results from panel unit root tests confirm that all variables are integrated of order one I (1), indicating stationarity. The Pedroni panel co-integration test further supports the presence of co-integration among the variables. Notably, the Panel VECM reveals evidence of a unidirectional causal relationship from Real Gross Domestic Product (RGDP) to Real Foreign Direct Investment (RFDI) across all six sectors of Bangladesh. The findings underscore the significance of formulating pragmatic policies and implementing them effectively to attract FDI across sectors, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth of Bangladesh.

RESUMO

This research investigates the effects of renewable (REC) and disaggregated non-renewable energy consumption (coal, oil, and natural gas) on CO2 emissions (CO2) in GCC countries, employing the STIRPAT model. The research also compares the impact of various non-renewable energy (NREC) sources to identify their contributions to CO2 emissions. Demographic factors like population and economic growth are considered main determinants of CO2. Panel data econometric methods are used, including diagnostic tests and unit root tests, to found long-run relationships among the variables. The study reveals significant positive associations between coal, natural gas, oil consumption and CO2, with oil having the highest impact. Conversely, REC shows a significant negative correlation with CO2. Economic growth and population are also linked to increased CO2. The findings emphasize the need for strategies promoting renewable energy usage, energy efficiency, public transportation, carbon pricing, and research in green technologies to alleviate CO2 and enhance sustainable development in the GCC countries.

RESUMO

This study empirically investigates the crowding effect of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on domestic investments in Bangladesh, utilizing annual time series data from 1972 to 2022. Initially, unit root tests are conducted with and without considering structural breaks in the dataset. This study employs the Johansen test of cointegration to investigate the enduring association between the variables and utilizes the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to accommodate this relationship over the long term. Following the estimation of the VECM, formulas about the magnitude of the crowding effect (CE) are applied to examine the impact of FDI on domestic investment in Bangladesh. Results indicate that FDI positively influences domestic investments in both the short and long run.

RESUMO

This research investigates the gender-specific associations of uroguanylin levels with various health-related parameters in Iraqi adults. The results revealed significant differences between genders in food style preferences and waist circumference (WC) risk. Notably, uroguanylin exhibited distinct correlations with low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body mass index (BMI), and WC in females and males, indicating potential gender-specific effects on lipid metabolism, glucose regulation, and adiposity. A total of 140 Iraqi adults (73 females and 67 males) were recruited into the study. Physical activity levels, food style preferences, WC risk, and BMI subgroups, were compared between genders. Additionally, participants' characteristics, including age, height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and uroguanylin concentrations, were analyzed. Significant gender differences were observed in food style preferences, with a higher proportion of males preferring fast food, with a greater percentage of females classified as having a high risk, females exhibited lower height and weight compared to males. HbA1c levels were significantly lower in females, whereas high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were significantly higher in females than in males. Uroguanylin concentrations were also significantly lower in females compared to males. Uroguanylin shows a moderately negative correlation with LDL cholesterol in females but not in males. Furthermore, a strong negative association between uroguanylin and HbA1c in females indicated improved glycemic control with higher uroguanylin levels, whereas an opposite trend was observed in males. No significant association was observed between uroguanylin and BMI in females, a significant positive correlation was found in males. For WC, a weak negative correlation was noted in females, whereas a moderately negative correlation was observed in males. These contrasting correlations imply potential gender-specific effects of uroguanylin on adiposity and body fat distribution.

RESUMO

Developing an efficient, selective, and stable electrocatalysis system for the electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (ENRR) is a promising strategy for the green and sustainable production of ammonia. The activity, selectivity, and stability of various electrocatalysts in different electrolyte solvents, mainly acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are commonly compared in the literature. However, a mechanistic insight into the effect of these electrolytes on ENRR activity is lacking. Herein we demonstrate that the acidity or alkalinity of the electrolyte is a key factor in determining the rate-limiting step and, by extension, the ENRR performance of an electrochemical setup for the electroproduction of ammonia. Our results from ex situ X-ray photoelectron, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopy analysis of the fresh and spent Cu-hexacyanoferrate Prussian blue analogue-decorated functionalized carbon nanotube (CuFe PBA/f-CNT) catalyst reveal that NH4+-species are more strongly adsorbed on the catalyst surface during the ENRR in acidic than in alkaline electrolytes. The results of our detailed rotating ring-disc electrode voltammetry studies suggest that the ENRR over CuFe PBA/f-CNT is mostly controlled by surface adsorption in an acidic electrolyte and by mass transport in an alkaline electrolyte. In situ Raman spectroscopy confirms this finding and shows that the leaching of Fe(CN)6 species from the CuFe PBA/f-CNT composite in an alkaline electrolyte greatly affects the ENRR performance. We believe that the work presented herein offers a new insight into the mechanistic aspects of the ENRR in different electrolyte systems and hence can prove very valuable for the development of effective ENRR electrode/electrolyte systems for practical applications.

RESUMO

Background: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a severe complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection. It remains unclear how MIS-C phenotypes vary across SARS-CoV-2 variants. We aimed to investigate clinical characteristics and outcomes of MIS-C across SARS-CoV-2 eras. Methods: We performed a multicentre observational retrospective study including seven paediatric hospitals in four countries (France, Spain, U.K., and U.S.). All consecutive confirmed patients with MIS-C hospitalised between February 1st, 2020, and May 31st, 2022, were included. Electronic Health Records (EHR) data were used to calculate pooled risk differences (RD) and effect sizes (ES) at site level, using Alpha as reference. Meta-analysis was used to pool data across sites. Findings: Of 598 patients with MIS-C (61% male, 39% female; mean age 9.7 years [SD 4.5]), 383 (64%) were admitted in the Alpha era, 111 (19%) in the Delta era, and 104 (17%) in the Omicron era. Compared with patients admitted in the Alpha era, those admitted in the Delta era were younger (ES -1.18 years [95% CI -2.05, -0.32]), had fewer respiratory symptoms (RD -0.15 [95% CI -0.33, -0.04]), less frequent non-cardiogenic shock or systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) (RD -0.35 [95% CI -0.64, -0.07]), lower lymphocyte count (ES -0.16 × 109/uL [95% CI -0.30, -0.01]), lower C-reactive protein (ES -28.5 mg/L [95% CI -46.3, -10.7]), and lower troponin (ES -0.14 ng/mL [95% CI -0.26, -0.03]). Patients admitted in the Omicron versus Alpha eras were younger (ES -1.6 years [95% CI -2.5, -0.8]), had less frequent SIRS (RD -0.18 [95% CI -0.30, -0.05]), lower lymphocyte count (ES -0.39 × 109/uL [95% CI -0.52, -0.25]), lower troponin (ES -0.16 ng/mL [95% CI -0.30, -0.01]) and less frequently received anticoagulation therapy (RD -0.19 [95% CI -0.37, -0.04]). Length of hospitalization was shorter in the Delta versus Alpha eras (-1.3 days [95% CI -2.3, -0.4]). Interpretation: Our study suggested that MIS-C clinical phenotypes varied across SARS-CoV-2 eras, with patients in Delta and Omicron eras being younger and less sick. EHR data can be effectively leveraged to identify rare complications of pandemic diseases and their variation over time. Funding: None.

RESUMO

The key purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between Greenfield investment and economic growth of Bangladesh using annual time series data during the period 2003-2020. The study employs Toda-Yamamoto (T-Y) tests of Granger causality method that performs Modified Wald Test (MWALD) in order to establish causal relation among different variables. There are three steps in implementing the T-Y procedure. The first step involves using different tests (ADF, PP, and KPSS test) to identify the maximum order of integration of the variable. The second step requires selecting the optimal lag length (p) based on several lag length selection criteria. In the third step, MWALD approach is used for testing the vector auto regression model for causality. The results of the tests (ADF, PP, and KPSS) concluded that the maximum order of integration of the variables is two. Then, the optimal lag length of two (p = 2) has been selected based on several lag length selection criteria. Finally, the findings reveal the evidence of unidirectional causality from Real Greenfield Foreign Direct Investment (RGFDI) to Real Gross Domestic Product (RGDP). The key contribution of this study is to investigate the Greenfield investments-growth relationship for a country like Bangladesh.

RESUMO

Background Metabolic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), are increasingly becoming a global problem. Apart from clinical judgment, it is necessary to have reliable, inexpensive, and non-invasive tools to assess the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as the disease can be diagnosed years after its onset, with irreversible complications. Methodology This is an observational cross-sectional study conducted at the College of Medicine, King Saud University, located in the capital city of Saudi Arabia. Data was collected through a questionnaire administered to medical students who voluntarily agreed to participate. The risk of T2DM was assessed using the American Diabetes Association diabetes risk test. The collected data was coded, entered into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS; IBM Inc., Armonk, New York), and subsequently analyzed. Results A total of 417 participants were included in our study, with a mean age of 20 ± 2.03 years and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 24.2 ± 5.3. The mean DM risk score was 1.83 ± 1.32 out of a total of 11. Of all the participants, 98.8% had a low-risk score for T2DM, while only 1.2% were identified as having a higher risk of developing T2DM. Approximately 77% of the participants had checked their weight and calculated their BMI in the last year. Among the participants, 98.1% identified obesity as a risk factor for T2DM, 57.8% reported smoking as a risk factor, 96.4% recognized a family history of DM as a risk factor, 80.8% identified a history of gestational DM as a risk factor, and 53.7% reported hypertension as a risk factor for T2DM. Conclusions Most of the study participants demonstrated a good knowledge level and awareness regarding T2DM, with only 1.2% found to be at an increased risk of developing the disease. Our analysis did not identify any significant association between having a high or low-risk score for T2DM and having a high or low awareness level of the disease.

RESUMO

During early vertebrate development, signals from a special region of the embryo, the organizer, can redirect the fate of non-neural ectoderm cells to form a complete, patterned nervous system. This is called neural induction and has generally been imagined as a single signalling event, causing a switch of fate. Here, we undertake a comprehensive analysis, in very fine time course, of the events following exposure of competent ectoderm of the chick to the organizer (the tip of the primitive streak, Hensen's node). Using transcriptomics and epigenomics we generate a gene regulatory network comprising 175 transcriptional regulators and 5614 predicted interactions between them, with fine temporal dynamics from initial exposure to the signals to expression of mature neural plate markers. Using in situ hybridization, single-cell RNA-sequencing, and reporter assays, we show that the gene regulatory hierarchy of responses to a grafted organizer closely resembles the events of normal neural plate development. The study is accompanied by an extensive resource, including information about conservation of the predicted enhancers in other vertebrates.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Antibiotic spectrum index (ASI) is a recently developed antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) tool that aims to classify antibiotics based on activity against clinically relevant bacterial pathogens. METHODS: We utilised ASI in a 2-year retrospective study between April 2019 and April 2021 in four paediatric intensive care units of a specialist UK children's hospital to quantify antibiotic use based on age, presence of immunosuppression and AMS input. We then compared ASI to days of therapy (DOT) to determine the utility of this AMS metric. We have made changes to Gerber's original ASI list and score of antibiotics to align with prescribing and resistance patterns in the UK. RESULTS: Median ASI/antibiotic days increased with age: for infants under 1 year of age 4.1 (IQR 4.0-4.3), for children 1-5 years 4.4 (IQR 4.0-4.6) and for children over 5 years 4.5 (IQR 4.1-4.6). Immunocompromised patients received much broader-spectrum antibiotics than immunocompetent patients throughout the whole study period. Patients who had AMS input had a higher ASI compared with those who did not throughout the whole period, likely due to more complex patients being discussed on such rounds. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show a complex picture of changing antibiotic consumption and prescribing in a large specialist paediatric hospital in the UK with a long-standing AMS programme before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. ASI shows less variability than DOT and can potentially be used to identify patient groups and time periods where broader-spectrum antibiotics are used to help guide further AMS efforts.

RESUMO

Infrastructure development has been a priority area since the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was proposed. This paper uses the generalized method of moments (GMM) to analyze the relationship between the green logistics, environment and economic growth based on panel data of countries along the BRI from 2007 to 2018. It is found that fossil fuels are the core of logistics operation activities, and the more fossil fuels are used, the more detrimental to the sustainable development of the environment. "The green logistics is negatively correlated with fossil fuel energy consumption and carbon emissions per capita in countries along the Belt and Road. At the same time, the green logistics can also bring more export opportunities for these countries and increase the national income per capita. The development of the green logistics is of great significance to the countries' environment and sustainable economic development along the Belt and Road.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to establish the frequency response of a selection of low-cost headset microphones that could be given to subjects for remote voice recordings and to examine the effect of microphone type and frequency response on key acoustic measures related to voice quality obtained from speech and vowel samples. METHOD: The frequency responses of three low-cost headset microphones were evaluated using pink noise generated via a head-and-torso model. Each of the headset microphones was then used to record a series of speech and vowel samples prerecorded from 24 speakers who represented a diversity of sex, age, fundamental frequency (F o), and voice quality types. Recordings were later analyzed for the following measures: smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPP; dB), low versus high spectral ratio (L/H ratio; dB), CPP F o (Hz), and cepstral spectral index of dysphonia (CSID). RESULTS: The frequency response of the microphones under test was observed to have nonsignificant effects on measures of the CPP and CPP F o, significant effects on the CSID in speech contexts, and strong and significant effects on the measure of spectral tilt (L/H ratio). However, the correlations between the various headset microphones and a reference precision microphone were excellent (rs > .90). CONCLUSIONS: The headset microphones under test all showed the capability to track a wide range of diversity in the voice signal. Though the use of higher quality microphones that have demonstrated specifications is recommended for typical research and clinical purposes, low-cost electret microphones may be used to provide valid measures of voice, specifically when the same microphone and signal chain is used for the evaluation of pre- versus posttreatment change or intergroup comparisons.

RESUMO

For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the hybrid triple coding empowered frequency division multiple access (FDMA)-code division multiple access (CDMA) mode of the coded access optical sensor (CAOS) camera is demonstrated. Compared to the independent FDMA and CDMA modes, the FDMA-CDMA mode has a novel high-security space-time-frequency triple signal encoding design for robust, faster, linear irradiance extraction at a moderately high dynamic range (HDR). Specifically, this hybrid mode simultaneously combines the linear HDR strength of the FDMA-mode fast Fourier transform (FFT) digital signal processing (DSP)-based spectrum analysis with the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) provided by the many simultaneous CAOS pixels' photodetection of the CDMA mode. In particular, the demonstrated FDMA-CDMA mode with P FDMA channels provides a P times faster camera operation versus the equivalent linear HDR frequency modulation (FM)-CDMA mode. Visible band imaging experiments using a digital-micromirror-device-based CAOS camera operating in its passive light mode demonstrates a P=4 channels FDMA-CDMA mode, illustrating high-quality image recovery of a calibrated 64 dB six-patch HDR target versus the CDMA and FM-CDMA CAOS modes, which limit dynamic range and speed, respectively. For the first time to our knowledge, we demonstrate the simultaneous dual image capture capability of the FDMA-CDMA mode using silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge) large-area point photodetectors, allowing the capture of the ultraviolet-near-infrared 350-1,800 nm full spectrum. The active FDMA-CDMA mode CAOS camera operation is also demonstrated using P=3 LED light sources, each with its unique optical spectral content driven by its independent FDMA frequency. This illuminated target spectral signature matched active CAOS mode allows simultaneous capture of P images without the use of P time-multiplexed slot operation tunable optical filters. Applications for such a FDMA-CDMA camera includes controlled light illumination food inspection to bright light exposure security systems.

RESUMO

The purpose of this paper is to establish a green supply chain differential game model for green technology research and development based on a secondary green supply chain composed of a single manufacturer and a single retailer. It compares the differential game equilibrium solutions under centralized and decentralized decision-making. The green supply chain members are coordinated through the dynamic wholesale price mechanism, and numerical simulation is used as a methodology, to verify and explain the results. The study found that compared to decentralized decision-making, the level of green technology and the total profit of green channels are higher under centralized decision-making. When the coordination parameters are within a certain range, the dynamic wholesale price mechanism can coordinate the behavior of manufacturers and retailers. The result also discovers that under the dynamic wholesale price mechanism, with the increase of investment cost coefficient, or the increase of price sensitivity or the decrease of consumer's environmental awareness, the green technology level, product green degree, price, retailer's profit, and the total profit of green channel is decreased. In contrast, the wholesale price and manufacturer's profits are increased.

RESUMO

Background Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is an important complication of hepatic cirrhosis and is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with cirrhosis. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to increase at an alarming rate around the world, with even more people being affected by prediabetes. Diabetes leads to increased gastric transit and orocecal time, increased glutamase activity, and intestinal bacterial overgrowth, which may increase intestinal ammonia production. Thus, we speculated that diabetes mellitus (DM) might predispose cirrhotic patients to development and/or exacerbation of HE. The main purpose of this study is to determine the association of DM with severe HE in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Methods This case-control study (122 cases and 122 controls) was conducted for 6 months on patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were selected from the Medical department, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi, after taking informed consent. Demographic data were presented as simple descriptive statistics giving mean and standard deviation and qualitative variables were presented as frequency and percentages. Chi-square was applied and the odds ratio (OR) was calculated taking a p-value of ≤ 0.05 as statistically significant. Results Out of a total of 244 patients, 122 patients had CLD with DM (case group) and 122 participants had CLD without DM (control group). The mean and standard deviation of age in the case and control groups in our study was 43.29±3.79 and 45.49±5.40. The mean and standard deviation of the duration of disease in the case and control groups in our study was 3.18±1.22 and 3.72±1.36. Males were 53 (43.44%) and 56 (45.10%) in the case and control groups, whereas females were 69 (56.56%) and 66 (54.10%) in the case and control groups, respectively. Out of 122 patients in the case group, 73 (59.84%) and 49 (40.16%) patients developed and did not develop severe HE, respectively. Out of 122 patients in the control group, 50 (40.98%) and 72 (59.02%) patients developed and did not develop severe HE, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis showed an association of severe HE with DM (p-value: 0.93, OR: 1.033, 95% CI: 0.586-1.599). Conclusion This study demonstrates that HE is a common occurrence in CLD patients. There was not a direct relationship of DM with the severity of HE was observed. However, further research with larger sample size and involving a multicenter setting is warranted.

RESUMO

Invasive Candida infections in hospitalized and immunocompromised or critically ill patients have become an important cause of morbidity and mortality. There are increasing reports of multidrug resistance in several Candida species that cause Candidemia, including C. glabrata and C. auris, with limited numbers of antifungal agents available to treat patients with invasive Candida infections. Therefore, there is an urgent need to discover new antifungal agents that work against multidrug-resistant Candida species, particularly C. auris, which has been identified as an emerging global pathogen. In this article, we report a new class of antifungal agents, the Schiff bases of sulphonamides, that show activity against all Candida species tested, with an MIC range of 4-32 µg/ml. Compound 2b showed activity against C. glabrata and a panel of fluconazole-resistant C. auris strains, with MICs of 4-16 µg/ml. The drug-like nature of these Schiff bases offers opportunities to optimize these compounds with medicinal chemistry techniques to obtain more potent analogs that can be progressed toward pre-clinical evaluation.

RESUMO

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of soft tissue or bone origin that can give rise to a challenge in diagnostic imaging. These tumors are frequently associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia, also called oncogenic osteomalacia, which is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by ectopic secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23, a hormone that regulates serum phosphate level. PMTs show polymorphic features on both radiological findings and histological examination, causing problems in diagnosis owing to their similarity with other mesenchymal tumors. Thus, this paper aims to describe radiological aspects of PMTs and suggest an imaging pathway for accurate diagnosis throughout the evidence from the literature review.

RESUMO

Secure updating and sharing for large amounts of healthcare information (such as medical data on coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]) in efficient and secure transmission are important but challenging in communication channels amongst hospitals. In particular, in addressing the above challenges, two issues are faced, namely, those related to confidentiality and integrity of their health data and to network failure that may cause concerns about data availability. To the authors' knowledge, no study provides secure updating and sharing solution for large amounts of healthcare information in communication channels amongst hospitals. Therefore, this study proposes and discusses a novel steganography-based blockchain method in the spatial domain as a solution. The novelty of the proposed method is the removal and addition of new particles in the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm. In addition, hash function can hide secret medical COVID-19 data in hospital databases whilst providing confidentiality with high embedding capacity and high image quality. Moreover, stego images with hash data and blockchain technology are used in updating and sharing medical COVID-19 data between hospitals in the network to improve the level of confidentiality and protect the integrity of medical COVID-19 data in grey-scale images, achieve data availability if any connection failure occurs in a single point of the network and eliminate the central point (third party) in the network during transmission. The proposed method is discussed in three stages. Firstly, the pre-hiding stage estimates the embedding capacity of each host image. Secondly, the secret COVID-19 data hiding stage uses PSO algorithm and hash function. Thirdly, the transmission stage transfers the stego images based on blockchain technology and updates all nodes (hospitals) in the network. As proof of concept for the case study, the authors adopted the latest COVID-19 research published in the Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine journal, which presents a rescue framework within hospitals for the storage and transfusion of the best convalescent plasma to the most critical patients with COVID-19 on the basis of biological requirements. The validation and evaluation of the proposed method are discussed.

RESUMO

Evaluating potential adverse health impacts caused by pesticides is an important parameter in human toxicity. This study focuses on the importance of subchronic toxicity assessment of cymoxanil fungicide in rats with special reference to target biochemical enzymes and histopathological changes in different tissues. In this regard, a 21-day toxicity study with repeated cymoxanil oral doses was conducted. It has been shown that low doses (0.5 mg/kg) were less effective than medium (1 mg/kg) and high (2 mg/kg) doses. Moreover, high dose dose-treated rats showed piecemeal necrosis in the liver, interstitial nephritis and tubular degeneration in the kidneys, interstitial pneumonia and type II pneumocyte hyperplasia in the lungs, gliosis, spongiosis, and malacia in the brain, and testicular edema and degeneration in the testes. Cymoxanil significantly increased AST, ALT, and ALP in serum and liver, indicating tissue necrosis and possible leakage of these enzymes into the bloodstream. Creatinine levels increased, indicating renal damage. Similarly, significant inhibition was recorded in brain acetylcholinesterase, indicating that both synaptic transmission and nerve conduction were affected. Importantly, these histopathological and biochemical alterations were dose-dependent. Taken together, our study reported interesting biochemical and histopathological alterations in different rat tissues following repeated toxicity with oral doses of cymoxanil. Our study suggests future studies on different pesticides at different concentrations that would help urge governments to create more restrictive regulations concerning these compounds' levels.
