Background/Objectives: Bariatric surgery candidates require presurgical physical training, therefore, we compared the metabolic effects of a constant moderate-intensity training program (MICT) vs. a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in this population. Methods: Seventeen participants performed MICT (n = 9, intensity of 50% of heart rate reserve (HRR) and/or 4-5/10 subjective sensation of effort (SSE)) or HIIT (n = 8, 6 cycles of 2.5 min at 80% of the HRR and/or 7-8/10 of SSE, interspersed by 6 cycles of active rest at 20% of the FCR) for 10 sessions for 4 weeks. After training, tissue samples (skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and liver) were extracted, and protein levels of adiponectin, GLUT4, PGC1α, phospho-AMPK/AMPK, collagen 1 and TGFß1 were measured. Results: Participants who performed MICT showed higher protein levels of PGC-1α in skeletal muscle samples (1.1 ± 0.27 vs. 0.7 ± 0.4-fold change, p < 0.05). In the liver samples of the people who performed HIIT, lower protein levels of phospho-AMPK/AMPK (1.0 ± 0.37 vs. 0.52 ± 0.22-fold change), PGC-1α (1.0 ± 0.18 vs. 0.69 ± 0.15-fold change), and collagen 1 (1.0 ± 0.26 vs. 0.59 ± 0.28-fold change) were observed (all p < 0.05). In subcutaneous adipose tissue, higher adiponectin levels were found only after HIIT training (1.1 ± 0.48 vs. 1.9 ± 0.69-fold change, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our results show that both MICT and HIIT confer metabolic benefits in candidates undergoing bariatric surgery; however, most of these benefits have a program-specific fashion. Future studies should aim to elucidate the mechanisms behind these differences.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bariatric surgery is highly effective against obesity. Pre-surgical exercise programs are recommended to prepare the candidate physically and metabolically for surgery-related rapid weight loss. However, the ideal exercise prescription in this population is unknown. This study aimed to compare the metabolic effects of moderate-intensity constant (MICT) vs. a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program in candidates to undergo bariatric surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-five candidates (22 women) to undergo sleeve gastrectomy aged from 18 to 60 years old were recruited. At baseline, we measured body composition, physical activity levels, grip strength, and aerobic capacity. Further, we assessed metabolic function through glycemia and insulinemia (both fasting and after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), lipid profile, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), transaminases, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), apelin, and adiponectin. Afterward, participants were randomized into MICT (n = 14) or HIIT (n = 11). Both training programs consisted of 10 sessions (2-3 times/week, 30 min per session) distributed during 4 weeks before the surgery. After this, all outcomes were measured again at the end of the training programs and 1 month after the surgery (follow-up). A mixed effect with Tukey's post-hoc analysis was performed to compare values at baseline vs. post-training vs. postsurgical follow-up. Both training programs increased aerobic capacity after training (p < 0.05), but only after MICT these changes were kept at follow-up (p < 0.05). However, only MICT decreased fat mass and increased total muscle mass and physical activity levels (p < 0.05). Metabolically, MICT decreased insulinemia after OGTT (p < 0.05), whereas HIIT increased adiponectin after training and GDF15 at follow-up (both p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both MICT and HIIT conferred benefits in candidates to undergo bariatric surgery, however, several of those effects were program-specific, suggesting that exercise intensity should be considered when preparing these patients. Future studies should explore the potential benefits of prescribing MICT or HIIT in a customized fashion depending on a pretraining screening, along with possible summatory effects by combining these two exercise programs (MICT + HIIT). BACKGROUND: Equid herpesvirus (EHV) commonly affects horses causing neurologic and respiratory symptoms beside spontaneous abortions, meaning huge economic losses for equine industry worldwide. In foals, the virus can facilitate secondary infections by Rhodococcus equi, important in morbidity and mortality in equines. A total of five genotypes of EHV were previously described in Brazil including EHV-1, EHV-2, EHV-3, EHV-4, and EHV-5. EHV-2 genotype had only been previously described in Brazil in asymptomatic animals. We report the investigation of the dead of 11 foals in Middle-west region of Brazil showing respiratory and neurological symptoms, as well as several abortions in mares from the same farm. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory exams were performed in this case study. Lung, whole blood, serum, and plasma samples were analyzed by necroscopic and histopathologic techniques followed by molecular assays (conventional and qPCR and Sanger sequencing). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Laboratory exams revealed neutrophilia leukocytosis. Necroscopic and histopathologic findings were suppurative bronchopneumonia and ulcerative enteritis. Molecular assays point to the absence of the bacteria Rhodococcus equi and other viruses (including other EHV). The presence of EHV-2 DNA was confirmed by sequencing in serum sample from one foal. This is the first confirmed outbreak of EHV-2 causing disease in Brazilian horses with confirmed presence of the virus, and which highlight the important role of EHV-2 in equine respiratory disease and spontaneous abortions in equid in Brazil.

Objetivos: la valoración de la tolerancia al ejercicio es clave para prescribir ejercicio en candidatos a cirugía bariátrica. El test de lanzadera (TL) se ha propuesto para este objetivo. Sin embargo, la evidencia que describe el rendimiento y respuesta fisiológica asociados a esta prueba en dicha población es escasa. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir la respuesta fisiológica a la realización del TL en candidatos a cirugía bariátrica. Métodos: este estudio transversal incluyó a 56 participantes. Se midieron factores antropométricos como la edad, peso, estatura y circunferencia de cintura, así como el nivel de actividad física espontáneo. Se valoró el rendimiento en el TL en metros, la respuesta fisiológica asociada en términos de frecuencia cardiaca de reserva (FCR) utilizada, presión arterial sistólica y diastólica, oximetría de pulso, sensación subjetiva al esfuerzo (SSE) y de fatiga de extremidades inferiores, antes y después del TL. Resultados: todos los participantes completaron la prueba sin complicaciones. Caminaron una mediana de 465 metros, equivalente al 61% de la distancia esperada. Utilizaron un 56% de la FCR, mientras que la SSE y fatiga de extremidades inferiores alcanzó valores 7/10 y 6/10 respectivamente. Fueron observadas asociaciones significativas entre el rendimiento en el TL vs factores antropométricos e indicadores de respuesta fisiológica. Conclusión: el TL es una prueba segura para valorar la tolerancia al esfuerzo en candidatos a cirugía bariátrica, la cual induce respuestas fisiológicas asociadas a intensidades moderadas. Se sugiere incluir esta prueba para la valoración de la condición física de estos sujetos.


Objective: Exercise tolerance measurement is key for exercise prescription in bariatric surgery candidates. Thus, the incremental shuttle walking test (ISWT) has been proposed as a useful tool for this purpose. However, reports describing the performance, and related physiological response, in candidates to bariatric surgery are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the physiological response of bariatric surgery candidates to the ISWT. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 56 participants. Anthropometric factors such as age, weight, height, and waist circumference were measured, as well as their spontaneous physical activity levels. Their ISWT performance was recorded, as well as the percentage of heart rate reserve used during the test, systolic and diastolic pressure, pulse oximetry, perceived exertion scale, and lower extremities fatigue, both before and after the ISWT. Results: All participants completed the test without complications. They walked a median of 465 meters, 61% of the expected distance. Heart rate reserve utilization reached 56%, while the perceived exertion rate and lower extremities fatigue reached 7/10 and 6/10, respectively. Moreover, significant associations between the ISWT performance vs anthropometric factors and physiological response outcomes were found. Conclusion: The ISWT is a safe and useful tool to assess exercise tolerance in bariatric surgery candidates, which induces physiological responses associated to moderate effort intensities. We suggest including the ISWT when assessing the physical performance of bariatric surgery candidates.


Objetivo: A medida da tolerância ao exercício é fundamental para a prescrição do exercício em candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica. Assim, o teste incremental de caminhada em vaivém (ISWT) tem sido proposto como uma ferramenta útil para este fim. No entanto, são escassos os relatos que descrevem o desempenho e a resposta fisiológica relacionada em candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi describir a resposta fisiológica do ISWT em candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica. Métodos: Este estudo transversal incluiu 56 participantes. Fatores antropométricos como idade, peso, altura, circunferência da cintura foram medidos, assim como os níveis de atividade física espontânea. O desempenho do ISWT foi registrado, assim como a porcentagem de reserva de frequência cardíaca utilizada durante o teste, pressão sistólica e diastólica, oximetria de pulso, escala de esforço percebido e fadiga de membros inferiores, tanto antes quanto após o ISWT. Resultados: Todos os participantes completaram o teste sem intercorrências. Eles caminharam uma mediana de 465 metros, o equivalente a 61% da distância esperada. A utilização de reserva de frequência cardíaca atingiu 56%, enquanto a taxa de esforço percebido e fadiga de membros inferiores atingiram 7/10 e 6/10, respectivamente. Além disso, foram encontradas associações significativas entre o desempenho do ISWT versus fatores antropométricos e os resultados da resposta fisiológica. Conclusão: O ISWT é uma ferramenta segura e útil para avaliar a tolerância ao exercício em candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica, que induz respostas fisiológicas associadas a intensidades moderadas de esforço. Sugerimos incluir o ISWT para avaliar o desempenho físico dos candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica.

RESUMO

The study evaluated the combination of ketamine, dexmedetomidine, and meperidine for vasectomy in golden-headed lion tamarins. Lidocaine infiltration was required for intraoperative analgesia and atipamezole was used at the end of the procedure. The protocol promoted satisfactory sedation and analgesia with a short recovery time in tamarins.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is caused by a respiratory virus with a wide range of manifestations, varying from asymptomatic to fatal cases, with a generally short outcome. However, some individuals present long-term viral shedding. We monitored 38 individuals who were mildly affected by the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Out of the total studied population, three (7.9%) showed atypical events regarding the duration of positivity for viral RNA detection. In one of these atypical cases, a previously HIV-positive male patient presented a SARS-CoV-2 RNA shedding and subgenomic RNA (sgRNA) detected from the upper respiratory tract, respectively, for 232 and 224 days after the onset of the symptoms. The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.28 lineage, one of the most prevalent in Brazil in 2020, was identified in this patient in three serial samples. Interestingly, the genomic analyses performed throughout the infectious process showed an increase in the genetic diversity of the B.1.1.28 lineage within the host itself, with viral clearance occurring naturally, without any intervention measures to control the infection. Contrasting widely spread current knowledge, our results indicate that potentially infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus might be shed by much longer periods by some infected patients. This data call attention to better adapted non-pharmacological measures and clinical discharge of patients aiming at preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to the population.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the cardiopulmonary and anesthetic effects of alfaxalone at three dose rates in comparison with a ketamine-dexmedetomidine-midazolam-tramadol combination (KDMT) for immobilization of golden-headed lion tamarins (GHLTs) (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) undergoing vasectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical trial. ANIMALS: A total of 19 healthy, male, wild-caught GHLTs. METHODS: Tamarins were administered alfaxalone intramuscularly (IM) at 6, 12 or 15 mg kg-1, or KDMT, ketamine (15 mg kg-1), dexmedetomidine (0.015 mg kg-1), midazolam (0.5 mg kg-1) and tramadol (4 mg kg-1) IM. Immediately after immobilization, lidocaine (8 mg kg-1) was infiltrated subcutaneously (SC) at the incision site in all animals. Physiologic variables, anesthetic depth and quality of immobilization were assessed. At the end of the procedure, atipamezole (0.15 mg kg-1) was administered IM to group KDMT and tramadol (4 mg kg-1) SC to the other groups; all animals were injected with ketoprofen (2 mg kg-1) SC. RESULTS: A dose-dependent increase in sedation, muscle relaxation and immobilization time was noted in the alfaxalone groups. Despite the administration of atipamezole, the recovery time was longer for KDMT than all other groups. Muscle tremors were noted in some animals during induction and recovery with alfaxalone. No significant differences were observed for cardiovascular variables among the alfaxalone groups, whereas an initial decrease in heart rate and systolic arterial blood pressure was recorded in KDMT, which increased after atipamezole administration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Alfaxalone dose rates of 12 or 15 mg kg-1 IM with local anesthesia provided good sedation and subjectively adequate pain control for vasectomies in GHLTs. KDMT induced a deeper plane of anesthesia and should be considered for more invasive or painful procedures. All study groups experienced mild to moderate hypothermia and hypoxemia; therefore, the use of more efficient heating devices and oxygen supplementation is strongly recommended when using these protocols.

BACKGROUND: Callithrix marmosets are a relatively young primate radiation, whose phylogeny is not yet fully resolved. These primates are naturally para- and allopatric, but three species with highly invasive potential have been introduced into the southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest by the pet trade. There, these species hybridize with each other and endangered, native congeners. We aimed here to reconstruct a robust Callithrix phylogeny and divergence time estimates, and identify the biogeographic origins of autochthonous and allochthonous Callithrix mitogenome lineages. We sequenced 49 mitogenomes from four species (C. aurita, C. geoffroyi, C. jacchus, C. penicillata) and anthropogenic hybrids (C. aurita x Callithrix sp., C. penicillata x C. jacchus, Callithrix sp. x Callithrix sp., C. penicillata x C. geoffroyi) via Sanger and whole genome sequencing. We combined these data with previously published Callithrix mitogenomes to analyze five Callithrix species in total. RESULTS: We report the complete sequence and organization of the C. aurita mitogenome. Phylogenetic analyses showed that C. aurita was the first to diverge within Callithrix 3.54 million years ago (Ma), while C. jacchus and C. penicillata lineages diverged most recently 0.5 Ma as sister clades. MtDNA clades of C. aurita, C. geoffroyi, and C. penicillata show intraspecific geographic structure, but C. penicillata clades appear polyphyletic. Hybrids, which were identified by phenotype, possessed mainly C. penicillata or C. jacchus mtDNA haplotypes. The biogeographic origins of mtDNA haplotypes from hybrid and allochthonous Callithrix were broadly distributed across natural Callithrix ranges. Our phylogenetic results also evidence introgression of C. jacchus mtDNA into C. aurita. CONCLUSION: Our robust Callithrix mitogenome phylogeny shows C. aurita lineages as basal and C. jacchus lineages among the most recent within Callithrix. We provide the first evidence that parental mtDNA lineages of anthropogenic hybrid and allochthonous marmosets are broadly distributed inside and outside of the Atlantic Forest. We also show evidence of cryptic hybridization between allochthonous Callithrix and autochthonous C. aurita. Our results encouragingly show that further development of genomic resources will allow to more clearly elucidate Callithrix evolutionary relationships and understand the dynamics of Callithrix anthropogenic introductions into the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

ABSTRACT The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is widely used to measure functional capacity in special populations. However, the factors associated with its performance in candidates for bariatric surgery are unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of anthropometric and physiological factors in the 6MWT performance in bariatric surgery candidates. This cross-sectional study included 107 candidates for bariatric surgery. Anthropometric factors considered: gender, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip, and waist-to-height ratios. Along with distance covered during 6MWT, physiological factors such as ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and heart rate reserve percentage used (%HRR) were recorded. Among the 107 patients (mean age: 39.6 years), 83 volunteers were accepted to perform the 6MWT. No gender differences were observed in terms of distance covered, %HRR, and RPE during the 6MWT. Moreover, BMI and %HRR explained 21% of the 6MWT distance covered. Furthermore, participants with BMI ≤41.5 kg/m2 walked ~50 meters more than their peers above this level (p=0.05). Interestingly, heart rate increase during the 6MWT was lower than described for healthy populations. BMI and %HRR partially explain the variability of the 6MWT performance in bariatric surgery candidates.


RESUMO O teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6) é uma ferramenta amplamente usada para medir a capacidade funcional em populações especiais. No entanto, os fatores associados ao seu desempenho em candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica não são claros. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a influência de fatores antropométricos e fisiológicos no desempenho do TC6 em candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica. Este estudo transversal incluiu 107 candidatos à cirurgia bariátrica. Os fatores antropométricos incluíram: sexo, peso, altura, índice de massa corporal (IMC) e índices cintura-quadril e altura-cintura. Além da distância percorrida durante o TC6, foram registrados fatores fisiológicos, como sensação subjetiva de esforço (SSE) e a porcentagem de frequência cardíaca de reserva utilizada (% FCR). Dos 107 pacientes (idade média: 39,6 anos), 83 voluntários concordaram em realizar o TC6. Não foram observadas diferenças por sexo em termos de distância percorrida, % FCR e SSE durante o TC6. Além disso, IMC e% FCR explicaram 21% da distância percorrida no TM6M. Além disso, indivíduos com IMC≤41,5 kg/m2 andaram ~50 metros a mais do que seus pares acima desse nível (p=0,05). Curiosamente, os aumentos na frequência cardíaca durante o TC6 foram inferiores aos descritos em populações saudáveis. IMC e %FCR foram fatores que explicaram parte da variabilidade do desempenho da TC6 em candidatos submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica.


RESUMEN La prueba de la marcha de seis minutos (PM6) es una herramienta muy utilizada para medir la capacidad funcional en ciertas poblaciones. Sin embargo, poco se conoce sobre los factores asociados a su desempeño en candidatos a cirugía bariátrica. Ante esto, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la influencia de factores antropométricos y fisiológicos en el desempeño de la PM6 en candidatos a cirugía bariátrica. En este estudio transversal participaron 107 candidatos a cirugía bariátrica. Los factores antropométricos fueron: sexo, peso, altura, índice de masa corporal (IMC) e índices cintura-cadera y altura-cintura. Además de la distancia recorrida durante la PM6, se registraron los factores fisiológicos como la sensación subjetiva de esfuerzo (SSE) y el porcentaje de frecuencia cardíaca de reserva utilizada (% FCR). De los 107 pacientes (edad media: 39,6 años), 83 voluntarios aceptaron realizar la PM6. No se encontraron diferencias por sexo respecto de la distancia recorrida, % FCR y ESS durante la PM6. Además, el IMC y el % FCR explicaron el 21% de la distancia recorrida en la PM6. Y los individuos con un IMC ≤41,5 kg/m2 caminaron ~50 metros más que sus pares por encima de este nivel (p=0,05). Resultó interesante que el incremento de la frecuencia cardíaca durante la PM6 fue más bajo que los reportados en poblaciones sanas. El IMC y % FCR fueron los factores que explicaron parte de la variabilidad en el desempeño de la PM6 en candidatos a cirugía bariátrica.

In Ecuador, the net energy contribution of biofuels is unknown or unnoticed. To address this issue, we determined the Energy Return on Investment (EROI) for bioethanol and biodiesel. The selection of raw materials relied on their productive capacity, export and import records, and historical yields. Consequently, the scope included three raw materials for ethanol (sugar cane, corn, and forest residues) and four for biodiesel (African palm, pinion, bovine fat, and swine fat). Using a method based on the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of each biofuel, we assessed the entire production chain through statistical processing of primary and secondary information. Then we calculated the calorific values in the laboratory, compared energy inputs/outputs, and finally obtained the energetic returns. EROIs for bioethanol were: 1.797 for sugarcane, 1.040 for corn, and 0.739 for wood. The results for biodiesel were: 3.052 for African palm, 2.743 for pinion, 2.187 for bovine fat, and 2.891 for swine fat. These values suggest feasibility only for sugarcane in the case of ethanol. In contrast, biodiesel has better prospects because all the feedstocks analyzed had EROIs higher than two. Nevertheless, biodiesel is not available for trading in Ecuador because energy policy has overlooked systems based on higher energy return. Future studies should consider more comprehensive variables such as climate change, land use, and water management.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) and interstitial lung disease (ILD) are seen in up to 60% of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), some of which will progress to have a significant impact on morbidity and mortality rates. Better characterization of progressive interstitial changes and identification of risk factors that are associated with progression may enable earlier intervention and improved outcomes. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are baseline characteristics associated with RA-ILD progression? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study in which all clinically indicated CT chest scans in adult individuals with RA from 2014 to 2016 were evaluated for interstitial changes, and the data were further subdivided into ILA and ILD based on clinical record review. Progression was determined visually and subsequently semiquantified. RESULTS: Those individuals with a spectrum of interstitial changes (64 of 293) were older male smokers and less likely to be receiving biologics/small molecule disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. Of 44% of the individuals with ILA, 46% had had chest CT scans performed for nonpulmonary indications. Of the 56 individuals with ILA/ILD with sequential CT scans, 38% had evidence of radiologic progression over 4.4 years; 29% of of individuals with ILA progressed. Risk factors for progressive ILA/ILD included a subpleural distribution and higher baseline involvement. INTERPRETATION: Of 293 individuals with RA with clinically indicated CT scans, interstitial changes were observed in 22%, one-half of whom had had a respiratory complaint at the time of imaging; radiologic progression was seen in 38%. Of individuals with progressive ILA, one-half had had baseline CT scans performed for nonpulmonary indications. Subpleural distribution and higher baseline ILA/ILD extent were risk factors associated with progression. Prospective longitudinal studies of RA-ILA are necessary.

Simian foamy viruses (SFV) infect a wide range of Old World and Neotropical primates (NP). Unlike Old World primates, little is known about the diversity and prevalence of SFV in NP, mainly from a free-living population. Phylogenetic analyses have shown that SFV coevolved with their hosts. However, viral strains infecting Leontopithecus chrysomelas did not behave as expected for this hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to determine the eco-epidemiological profile and molecular characterization of SFV in a recently captured invasive population of L. chrysomelas located in Niteroi/RJ using buccal swab as an alternative collection method. A prevalence of 34.8% (32/92) and a mean viral load of 4.7 log copies of SFV/106 cells were observed. With respect to time since capture, SFV prevalence was significantly higher in the group of animals sampled over 6 months after capture (55.2%) than in those more recently captured (25.4%) (p = 0.005). Infected solitary animals can contribute to SFV transmission between different groups in the population. SFV strains formed two distinct clades within the SFV infecting the Cebidae family. This is the first study to use buccal swabs as a tool to study SFV diversity and prevalence in a recently free-living NP population upon recent capture.

RESUMO

Non-human primates are susceptible to many bacteria, some of which bear zoonotic potential. We report the pathologic features of spontaneous fulminating meningoencephalitis by Staphylococcus aureus in a captive infant golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: A smooth and rapid recovery from anesthesia allowing safe release is desirable, especially for wild species. This study describes the clinical effects of the combination of dexmedetomidine and ketamine and the partial reversal with atipamezole in golden-headed lion tamarins. METHODS: Dexmedetomidine 10 µg kg-1 and ketamine 15 mg kg-1 were administered to 45 golden-headed lion tamarins undergoing vasectomy. Following surgery, animals were assigned to three groups: control (SAL; 0.9% NaCl), atipamezole 20 µg kg-1 (ATI20), and atipamezole 40 µg kg-1 (ATI40). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: All animals presented great scores of sedation and muscle relaxation during the procedure. Recovery in the control group was smooth and uneventful. Salivation, muscle tremors, and head movements were observed in ATI 20 and ATI40. The administration of atipamezole did not change total recovery times (ATI20 69 ± 23 minutes; ATI40 72 ± 45 minutes; SAL 57 ± 23 minutes).

Beta-carotene is an extremely interesting bioactive compound in the food industry due to its antioxidant capacity and pro-vitamin A activity. However, its incorporation into food products can be challenging, as it is highly hydrophobic and chemically unstable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating beta-carotene-loaded solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) stabilized with a hydrolyzed soy protein isolate in yogurt. The SLMs were produced using palm stearin as the lipid phase. Microparticle dispersions containing only beta-carotene and both beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol were incorporated into yogurts, comprising 5% of its total mass. This addition itself was efficient to provide color, and the presence of the lipid microparticles did not change the physicochemical or the rheological characteristics of the product. Based on the sensory evaluation, the panelists approved the yogurt, as average grades of global acceptance were around 8.0 ("liked it very much") on the hedonic scale.

The world currently faces severe biodiversity losses caused by anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, pollution, the introduction of exotic species, habitat fragmentation, and climate changes. Disease ecology in altered environments is still poorly understood. The golden-headed lion tamarin (GHLT, Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is an endangered species that became invasive in an urban park in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The initially few invasive GHLT individuals became hundreds, adapted to living in proximity to humans and domestic animals. These GHLTs were captured as part of a conservation project; some animals were translocated to Bahia and some were kept in captivity. This study tested 593 GHLT for Leptospira serology; 100 and 95 GHLT for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) toLeptospira and hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEV-3), respectively, and 101 familiar groups for PCR to viruses (rotavirus A, norovirus GI and GII, and HEV-3). One animal had antibodies for Leptospira serovar Shermani and another for serovar Hebdomadis. One saprophyticLeptospira was found by the 16S PCR and sequencing. Viruses were not detected in samples tested. Findings suggest that the epidemiological importance of such pathogens in this GHLT population is either low or nonexistent. These data are important to understand the local disease ecology, as well as monitoring a translocation project, and to contribute data for species conservation.

RESUMO

Malignant adipocytic neoplasia is rare among nonhuman primates. We report the gross and microscopic features of a retroperitoneal liposarcoma with myxofibrosarcoma-like dedifferentiation in a free-ranging juvenile golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas). To our knowledge, this is the first report of such tumor subtype in New World primates.
