RESUMO

Mean plasma levels of beta-endorphin (beta EP), beta-lipotropin (beta LPH) and ACTH were significantly higher in 22 patients with primary affective disorders (PAD) and in 2 schizoaffective subjects off therapy since 10 days than in 22 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Desimipramine therapy (50-100 mg/day per os for 3-5 weeks) induced in parallel psychological improvement and fall in beta LPH-beta EP in 6 of 8 PAD patients treated, and a normalization of beta EP-beta LPH levels with minimal mood improvement in the 2 schizoaffective subjects. These results indicate that the opioid levels are increased in PAD and schizoaffective patients and normalized by the desimipramine therapy in those patients in whom the affective disorders improved.

After an i.v. injection of human menopausal gonadotrophin (hMG), three components of the disappearance time in heifers were found for immunoreactive LH (half-life 13.8--1020 min) and immunoreactive FSH (half-life 21.3--1090 min). When heifers were treated daily with hMG from Days 9, 10 or 11 of the cycle for 3 or 5 days, a total dose of 1350 i.u. FSH induced 10.2 +/- 2.5 (mean +/- s.d.) corpora lutea (CL) in 6 animals and 13 persistent follicles in 4 animals, while a total dose of 2100 i.u. FSH induced 14.3 +/- 1.5 CL in 6 heifers and there were no persistent follicles. Nine heifers treated with a single i.m. injection of 1500 i.u. PMSG exhibited 11.4 +/- 8.6 CL with 17 persistent follicles in 7 animals. Progesterone concentrations rose significantly faster and the oestradiol drop was more rapid after oestrus in heifers treated with hMG than in those treated with PMSG. These results demonstrate that stimulation of the ovarian follicles of heifers is more homogeneous when hMG is used.

RESUMO

A highly reliable technique for the determination of progesterone in milk has been developed, and its application to pregnancy diagnosis in cows is reported. The method is characterized by an activated charcoal treatment of the samples, extraction of the absorbed progesterone by an organic solvent, followed by RIA. The application of the method to pregnancy diagnosis, 21--23 days after artificial insemination, shows that 5 ng/ml is the most useful value to discriminate between pregnant and non-pregnant animals, with greatest precision on the 21st day, in that 93.5% of pregnant and 100% of non-pregnant animals were correctly diagnosed.

We measured the plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), oestradiol (E2), progesterone (P), 17 alpha-hydroxy progesterone (17P), androstenediona (A) and testosterone (T) at oestrus and during the oestrous cycle for four consecutive cycles in a group of 15 normal sows. The results show that at oestrus the peak LH value was preceded, 24 hours earlier, by an E2 peak, and indicate that the LH rise begins when E2 concentrations reach their highest value. During diestrus, concentrations of LH and E2 were constantly low, P and 17P were characterized by lowest concentrations during the oestrous period which showed significant (p less than 0.001), progressive increases from the second day after the LH ovulatory peak, to reach their highest values after 8-14 days. The 17P decrease in proestrus precedes that of P.T and A concentrations showed a significant (p less than 0.001) increase 2 days before the LH ovulatory peak; high plasma concentrations of both androgens were maintained until the LH peak occurred. Measurements taken in consecutive cycles in the same animals showed a high reproducibility of the hormone concentrations examined, which showed similar patterns and values in each of the cycles studied. This high reproducibility suggests that these hormones have an important physiological role and may affect oestrous behaviour.
