RESUMO

Keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum (KCM) is a rare variant of keratoacanthoma (KA), characterized by progressive peripheral growth, and usually devoid of deep invasion. Different systemic (oral retinoids) or topical treatments have been reported, but there is not a well-defined therapeutic protocol. We report the case of a KCM developing after photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the right leg of a 64-year-old woman. It was treated successfully with oral acitretin combined with topical 5-Fluorouracil + salicylic acid for 5 months. This is the first case of KCM developing after PDT and successfully treated with oral retinoid combined with topical treatment.

RESUMO

Trichotillomania is a form of traction alopecia resulting from repetitive and compulsive hair pulling and plucking. Trichotillomania and patchy alopecia areata may have similar clinical and dermoscopic features in some cases. On trichoscopic examination, the presence of black dots, coiled or hook hair, shafts of varying lengths with fraying or split ends (trichoptilosis), and an absence of exclamation mark hairs and yellow dots are suggestive of trichotillomania.

RESUMO

Short anagen syndrome is an uncommon and recently described disease characterized by many telogen hairs and short maximum hair length. We report here the case of a 3-year-old girl whose short, sparse, fine hair since birth was consistent with short anagen syndrome. X-ray microanalysis demonstrated normal composition of the main bioelements of her hairs.

RESUMO

Unusually prolonged pressure on the scalp by the cervical os during or before the delivery may result in a distinctive pattern of annular alopecia that has been referred to as halo scalp ring. This rare form of hair loss is most commonly a temporary, non-scarring process that is attributed to caput succedaneum. We report a new case of halo scalp ring in a premature newborn. Review of previously reported cases suggests that prematurity is an important, previously unrecognized, risk factor for developing a halo scalp ring.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lipedematous alopecia and lipedematous scalp are two similar unusual conditions mostly affecting healthy black women. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to report three cases of this condition with emphasis on clinical and histologic findings, and to review the literature on the subject. METHODS: The study includes clinical, echographic, and histologic findings of 3 patients, complemented with a literature review. RESULTS: Two cases of lipedematous alopecia and one of lipedematous scalp in 3 white women had echographic confirmation of an increased subcutaneous layer. The presence of ectatic lymphatic vessels in the two cases with hair loss was particularly emphasized. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a lessened role of racial factors, but confirms the sex implications in these related conditions, and stress the potential significance of lymphangiectatic vessels in the development of alopecia in these patients.
