RESUMO

Patients receiving inpatient treatment for alcohol dependence were followed for 31 weeks after discharge. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) attenders, when compared with nonattenders, were not distinguishable on pretreatment patient characteristics. Posttreatment attendance of AA was not predictive of drinking outcomes. However, a measure of the degree to which patients had become involved in AA did predict more favorable outcomes.

RESUMO

Clinical writings and research often imply the homogeneity of Alcoholics Anonymous. Survey data from four groups reflected some consistencies as well as substantial variation in group environment that could have an important impact on outcomes and research.

RESUMO

A 54-year-old woman with a 19-year history of rheumatoid arthritis developed life-threatening thrombocytopenia one week after beginning butoconazole therapy for a vaginal yeast infection. This was complicated by upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage that probably resulted from ibuprofen and methotrexate therapy. Sepsis, myelophthisic anemias, and other potential etiologies were ruled out. Once stabilized, the patient was rechallenged with other medications without incident. These findings indicate that a potentially serious thrombocytopenia may result from the administration of butoconazole vaginal cream or in combination with methotrexate and/or ibuprofen.

RESUMO

The stability of 5-aminosalicylic acid in a suspension prepared extemporaneously for administration by enema was studied. The suspension was prepared (tragacanth was the suspending agent) and then placed in 3-ounce amber glass prescription bottles; five bottles were stored at room temperature and five were refrigerated for 90 days. Using samples from each bottle, concentrations of 5-aminosalicylic acid were determined in triplicate by high-performance liquid chromatography at 0, 30, 60, and 90 days. Throughout the study period, all samples retained more than 90% of the day 0 concentration of 5-aminosalicylic acid. At each storage time, concentrations in samples stored at either room temperature or under refrigeration were not significantly different. In this extemporaneously prepared suspension, 5-aminosalicylic acid was stable for 90 days at room temperature and under refrigeration.
