Background: Over the last few years, ultrasonography has been introduced as the fifth pillar to patient's bedside physical examination. Clinical assessments aim to screen and look for airway difficulties to predict difficult intubations, but none have demonstrated a significant predictive capacity. Recent systematic reviews have established a correlation between ultrasound imaging and difficult direct laryngoscopy. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the utilization of ultrasonography to examine the upper airway could accurately predict difficult direct laryngoscopy. Methods: This is a prospective observational study including 102 adult patients that required general anesthesia for elective surgery. Preoperatively, clinical airway assessments were performed. Data such as Mallampati-Samsoon grade (MS), upper lip bite test (ULBT), thyromental (TMD) and sternomental distance (SMD), cervical circumference (CC) and the Arné risk index were collected. Ultrasound evaluation was taken at five different levels in two planes, parasagittal and transverse. Therefore, the following measurements were registered: distance from skin to hyoid bone (DSHB), distance from skin to thyrohyoid membrane (DSTHM), distance from skin to epiglottis (DSE), distance from skin to thyroid cartilage (DSTC) and distance from hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage (DHBTC). Patients were divided into two groups based on the difficulty to perform direct laryngoscopy, according to Cormack-Lehane (C-L) classification. Grades I and II were classified as easy laryngoscopy and grades III or IV as difficult. Logistic regression models and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was employed to determine the diagnostic precision of ultrasound measurements to distinguish difficult laryngoscopy (DL). Results: The following risk score for DL was obtained, DSTHM ≥ 1.60 cm (2 points), DSTC ≥ 0.78 cm (3 points) and gender (2 points for males). The score can range from 0 to 7 points, and showed and AUC (95% CI) of 0.84 (0.74-0.95). A score of 5 points or higher indicates a 34-fold increase in the risk of finding DL (p = 0.0010), sensitivity of 91.67, specificity of 75.56, positive predictive value of 33.33, and negative predictive value of 98.55. Conclusion: The use of ultrasonography combined with classic clinical screening tests are useful tools to predict difficult direct laryngoscopy.

This study proposes an explanation for the physical power flow in planar circuits by analogy to theoretical two-dimensional circuits using a new mathematical model based on Geometric Algebra (GA) and 2D Maxwell's equations. In contrast with traditional 3D physics in the observable real world, the magnetic field can be defined as a bivector instead of an axial vector allowing to obtain the Poynting Vector directly in a 2D flat world, where physical variables of planar circuits can be obtained. This approach is presented here for the first time to the best of the author's knowledge. Previous investigations have focused on simplifications and symmetries of real 3D circuits studied mainly in the phasor and frequency domain. In this work, the electromagnetic power flow phenomenon is analyzed on a completely 2D time-domain basis and derived directly from the undisputed Maxwell equations, formulated in two dimensions. Several cases of special interest in AC multi-phase circuits are presented using the proposed technique, bringing a new simplified approach to the measurement of power flow exchange between the source and the load. It suggests a new way to understand energy propagation from a purely physical point of view.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The Spanish Registry of Acute Aortic Syndrome (RESA) was launched in 2005 to identify the characteristics of acute aortic syndrome (AAS) in Spain. The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in management and mortality in the 3 RESA iterations. METHODS: We analyzed data from patients with AAS prospectively included by 24 to 30 tertiary centers during the 3 iterations of the registry: RESA I (2005-2006), RESA-II (2012-2013), and RESA III (2018-2019). RESULTS: AAS was diagnosed in 1902 patients (74% men; age, 60.7±12.5 years): 1329 (69.9%) type A and 573 (30.1%) type B. Comparison of the 3 periods revealed that the use of computed tomography increased as the first diagnostic technique (77.1%, 77.9%, and 84.2%, respectively; P=.001). In type A, surgical management increased (79.6%, 78.7%, and 84.5%; P=.045) and overall mortality decreased (41.2%, 34.5%, and 31.2%; P=.002), due to a reduction in surgical mortality (33.4%, 25.1%, and 23.9%; P=.003). In type B, endovascular treatment increased (22.8%, 32.8%, and 38.7%; P=.006), while medical and surgical treatment decreased. Overall type B mortality also decreased (21.6%, 16.1%, and 12.0%; P=.005) in line with a reduction in mortality with medical (16.8%, 13.8%, and 8.8%, P=.030) and endovascular (27.0%, 18.0%, and 9.2%; P=.009) treatments. CONCLUSIONS: The iterations of RESA show a decrease in mortality from type A AAS, coinciding with an increase in surgical treatment and a reduction in surgical mortality. In type B, the use of endovascular treatment was associated with improved survival, allowing better management in patients with complications.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a legal and administrative tool aimed to identify, predict, and interpret the impact of a project or activity on the environment and human health. The EIA also evaluates the accuracy of the predictions and audits the effectiveness of the established preventive measures. Regarding the sanitation sector, efficiency of wastewater treatments and sanitation networks determine the pollutant level of the discharged liquid effluents and the subsequent impact on the environment and human health. This problematic makes necessary to assess how proper the regulatory follow-ups of sanitation projects is. This paper evaluates the performance of the Chilean EIA System concerning to sanitation projects. Taking into account that the more restrictive Environmental Impact Study (EIS) and more permissive Environmental Impact Declaration (EID) are the ways for projects' entry to the EIA System in Chile, 5336 sanitation projects submitted to EIA between 1994 and 2019 were complied. A representative sample of 76 projects (15 entered as EIS and 61 as EID) was analyzed by using a principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) through 14 selected performance indicators. Observed weaknesses have led to propose improvement opportunities of the EIA focused on the follow-ups after the environmental license is obtained, such as creation of a simplified sanctioning procedure, decentralization of decision-making, deadline establishment in each stage, and unified direct link for each project. These proposals seek to improve the effectiveness of monitoring and possible sanctions to early identify impacts of sanitation projects on the environment and human health. This paper introduces a robust methodology for evaluation criteria focused on the follow-ups analysis, which can be used in other countries that consider respectful sanitation projects have direct social and environmental benefits leading to long-term indirect cultural and economic values.

Background: Cannabis plants and their seed have been used in many cultures as a source of medicine and feeding during history. Today, there is an increasing demand for cannabis seeds for medical use. Moreover, a seed sales market with no legal regulations has also grown. This may pose some issues if a quality control is not set in place. Identification of cannabis strains is important for quality control purposes in a nonregulated growing market and in cases of illegal traffic and medical use. Owing to the high price as a pharmacological drug, commercial products of cannabis plants and seeds for medical users are often subjected to adulterations, either when packing or distributing certified seeds in the market. Materials and Methods: Cannabis commercial seeds and cannabis seeds for medical use were analyzed with high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis using barcoding markers. Humulus lupulus L. plants from a local market were used as outgroup control. DNA barcoding uses specific regions of the genome to identify differences in the genetic sequence of conserved regions such as internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and rbcL. DNA barcoding data can be generated with real-time polymerase chain reaction combined with HRM analysis to distinguish specific conserved DNA regions of closely related species. HRM analysis is the method of choice for rapid analysis of sequence variation. Results: The melting temperature (Tm) of homogeneous packages was consistent with single genotypes. However, packages containing contaminating seeds showed Tm differences of 0.2°C on average. Conclusions: An effective, rapid, and low-cost method based on ITS nuclear DNA and on chloroplast rbcL regions for screening and detection of contamination in commercial cannabis seeds was developed and applied for the analysis of different samples. This approach can be used as a quality control tool for cannabis seeds or other plant material.

Freshwater organisms are often sensitive to pesticides, but their sensitivity varies across different taxa and with pesticide type and action mode, as shown by multiple acute toxicity tests. Such variability hampers predictions about how freshwater ecosystems may be altered by pesticide toxicity, which is especially critical for understudied areas of the world such as the tropics. Furthermore, there is little information about the sensitivity of some organisms that are key components of stream food webs; this is the case of litter-feeding detritivorous invertebrates, which contribute to the fundamental process of litter decomposition. Here, we examined the sensitivity of three common detritivores [Anchytarsus sp. (Coleoptera: Ptilodactylidae), Hyalella sp. (Amphipoda: Hyalellidae) and Lepidostoma sp. (Trichoptera: Lepidostomatidae)] to three pesticides commonly used (the insecticides bifenthrin and chlorpyrifos and the fungicide chlorothalonil) using acute (48 or 96 h) toxicity tests. Our study demonstrates that common-use pesticides provoke the mortality of half their populations at concentrations of 0.04-2.7 µg L-1. We found that all species were sensitive to the three pesticides, with the highest sensitivity found for chlorpyrifos. Additionally, we used the approach of species sensitivity distributions (SSD) to compare our study species with Daphnia magna and other temperate and tropical invertebrates. We found that the study species were among the most sensitive species to chlorpyrifos and chlorothalonil. Our results suggest that tropical detritivores merit special attention in ecological risk assessment of pesticides and highlight the need for accurate ecotoxicological information from ecologically relevant species in the tropics.

The assessment of human spatial short-term memory has mainly been performed using visual stimuli and less frequently using auditory stimuli. This paper presents a framework for the development of SLAM-based Augmented Reality applications for the assessment of spatial memory. An AR mobile application was developed for this type of assessment involving visual and tactile stimuli by using our framework. The task to be carried out with the AR application is divided into two phases: 1) a learning phase, in which participants physically walk around a room and have to remember the location of simple geometrical shapes; and 2) an evaluation phase, in which the participants are asked to recall the location of the shapes. A study for comparing the performance outcomes using visual and tactile stimuli was carried out. Fifty-three participants performed the task using the two conditions (Tactile vs Visual), but with more than two months of difference (within-subject design). The number of shapes placed correctly was similar for both conditions. However, the group that used the tactile stimulus spent significantly more time completing the task and required significantly more attempts. The performance outcomes were independent of gender. Some significant correlations among variables related to the performance outcomes and other tests were found. The following significant correlations among variables related to the performance outcomes using visual stimuli and the participants' subjective variables were also found: 1) the greater the number of correctly placed shapes, the greater the perceived competence; 2) the more attempts required, the less the perceived competence. We also found that perceived enjoyment was higher when a higher sense of presence was induced. Our results suggest that tactile stimuli are valid stimuli to exploit for the assessment of the ability to memorize spatial-tactile associations, but that the ability to memorize spatial-visual associations is dominant. Our results also show that gender does not affect these types of memory tasks.

The global aquaculture industry has grown exponentially in recent years using to control of infections and diseases, a variety of veterinary drugs (VMP) are used, including antibiotics, antifungals and antiparasitics, which have different routes of emission, environmental persistence and side effects to aquatic organisms, becoming one of the main concerns in its use of veterinary drugs (VMP) and its potential toxicological impact on the environment, in this context, Chile is considered one of the main salmon producers. Ecological risk assessment of active principles used infreshwater fish farms worldwide and in Chile were investigated. We recollect a physical - chemical properties of active principles used by fish farms and we could estimate the relative hazard a priori. Later active principles grouped as antibiotics (n = 6), antiparasitics (n = 5), anesthetics (n = 3), and disinfectants (n = 7) were assessed using a mass balance model based on fugacity was developed for each active principle under treatments via immersion and food administration in fish, while a volumetric model for disinfectants and sodium chloride was used for estimating the predicted environmental concentration (PEC), under a real smolt farming scenario in fish farms. Ecotoxicological data were collected from open literature to predict the no-effect concentration (PNEC). The ecological risk assessment was characterized using a risk quotient (RQ = PEC/PNEC) based in two assessment tiers. Results revealed that 12 active ingredients showed a high risk (RQ ≥ 1), thus indicating that adverse effects could occur and further investigation with measured concentrations in the field are required to reduce exposure in surface waters.

Resumen El síndrome compartimental se define como la elevación de la presión tisular por arriba de 30 mmHg en un compartimento, siendo más fiable la comparación de la presión tisular compartimental con la presión arterial diastólica por debajo de 30 mmHg; esta situación comúnmente es predecesora del síndrome de aplastamiento, el cual se define como una rabdomiólisis postraumática con alteración sistémica, principalmente asociada a falla renal aguda. El uso de la amputación como método para mejorar la condición clínica del paciente aún es controversial, por lo que a continuación se presenta el caso de un paciente rescatado de los escombros de un derrumbe, 24 horas después del terremoto que afectó a la Ciudad de México el 19 se septiembre de 2017, así mismo se presenta una revisión de la literatura actual.


Abstract Compartment Syndrome is defined as the elevation of tissue pressure above 30 mmHg in a compartment and because comparing the compartment tissue pressure with the diastolic blood pressure below 30 mmHg has proved to be more reliable, this is now a predecessor of Crush Syndrome, which is defined as a post-traumatic rhabdomyolysis with systemic distress mainly associated with acute renal failure. The use of amputation as a method to improve the patient's clinical condition is still controversial, thereby we present the clinical case of a patient rescued from a collapsed building 24 hours after the earthquake that affected Mexico City on September 19, 2017, followed by an updated literature review.

BACKGROUND: The identification of modifiable bleeding risk factors may be of relevance. The aim is to evaluate if aortic stenosis (AS) provides additional information to bleeding risk scores for predicting major bleeding (MB) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: We designed a retrospective multi-center study including 2880 consecutive non-valvular AF patients initiating oral anticoagulation between January 2013 and December 2016. AS was defined as moderate or severe according to European echocardiography guidelines criteria. HASBLED, ATRIA and ORBIT scores were used to evaluate the bleeding risk. MB was defined according to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasia criteria and registered at 18 months of follow-up. RESULTS: 168 (5.8%) patients had AS. Patients with AS had higher risk for MB compared to those without AS (HR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.40-3.23, P < 0.001). Patients without AS and low-intermediate bleeding risk (0 points) showed the lowest MB rate, whereas the MB rate observed among patients with AS and high bleeding risk (2 points) was the highest one. Discrimination and reclassification analyses showed that AS provided additional information to bleeding risk scores for predicting MB at 18 months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: In this population, AS was associated with an increased risk for MB at midterm follow-up. The three scoring systems showed a moderate discriminatory ability for MB. Moreover, the addition of AS was associated with a significant improvement in their predictive accuracy. We suggest that the presence of this valvulopathy should be taken into account for bleeding risk assessment.

Objective Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is widely recommended and used to evaluate peripheral arterial disease. The oxygen saturation (SpO2) has been associated with ABI, showing a promising clinical practice utility; however, little literature regarding this matter has been reported. This study aims to assess the correlation between pulse oximetry and ABI.  Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using ABI measuring devices, such as the MESI® Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) (MESI, Ltd., Slovenia, EU) and pulse oximetry. We compared the SpO2 distribution by using the Wilcoxon test and evaluated its correlation by using logistic regression.  Results From a total of 86 patients, 54 were males (62.8%) and the median age was 54 years old (interquartile range (IQR) = 37 - 65 yrs.). Regarding ABI measurements of the right lower limb (RLL), a total of 20 patients (22.3%) had an abnormal classification. On the other hand, a total of 21 patients (22.1%) had an abnormal classification of the left lower limb (LLL) ABI measurements. The distribution of SpO2 in relation to ABI categories was not statistically different (RLL p = 0.2433; LLL p = 0.1242). The SpO2 classification of ABI and abnormal pulse oximetry for the RLL was at 76.7% and at 77.9% in the LLL (Pearson's goodness-of-fit test: RLL = p < 0.001 and LLL = p < 0.001).  Conclusion Although we didn't observe any statistical differences in the SpO2 distribution regarding ABI measurements, in their correlation, there seems to be a different tendency. The SpO2 might be a useful non-invasive tool to assess asymptomatic patients with risk factors for peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

We study the phase space objects that control the transport in a classical Hamiltonian model for a chemical reaction. This model has been proposed to study the yield of products in an ultracold exothermic reaction. In this model, two features determine the evolution of the system: a Van der Waals force and a short-range force associated with the many-body interactions. In the previous work, small random periodic changes in the direction of the momentum were used to simulate the short-range many-body interactions. In the present work, random Gaussian bumps have been added to the Van der Waals potential energy to simulate the short-range effects between the particles in the system. We compare both variants of the model and explain their differences and similarities from a phase space perspective. To visualize the structures that direct the dynamics in the phase space, we construct a natural Lagrangian descriptor for Hamiltonian systems based on the Maupertuis action S_{0}=∫_{q_{i}}^{q_{f}}p·dq.

Introducción y objetivos: La enfermedad valvular en los pacientes con fibrilación auricular incluidos en los ensayos clínicos con anticoagulantes orales directos (ACOD) es frecuente y se asocia con peor pronóstico. El objetivo es evaluar la prevalencia de valvulopatía y su influencia en los eventos clínicos en la práctica clínica real. Métodos: Registro multicéntrico retrospectivo que incluyó a 2.297 pacientes consecutivos con fibrilación auricular no valvular que iniciaron tratamiento con ACOD entre enero de 2013 y diciembre de 2016. La enfermedad valvular se definió como afección moderada o grave. El evento principal fue la combinación de muerte, ictus o accidente isquémico transitorio/embolia sistémica o hemorragia mayor. Se realizó un análisis de riesgos competitivos mediante un modelo de regresión de Fine y Gray, con la muerte como evento competitivo. Resultados: Tenían valvulopatía 499 pacientes (21,7%), y la insuficiencia mitral fue la más frecuente (13,7%). Los pacientes con valvulopatía eran de más edad y con mayor comorbilidad. Tras el análisis multivariable, la enfermedad valvular fue predictora del evento combinado (HR=1,54; IC95%, 1,22-1,94; p<0,001), muerte (HR=1,44; IC95%, 1,09-1,91, p=0,010) y hemorragia mayor (HR=1,85; IC95%, 1,23-2,79, p=0,003), pero no de eventos tromboembólicos (p >0,05). Conclusiones: En pacientes con fibrilación auricular no valvular que inician tratamiento con ACOD, la enfermedad valvular es frecuente y se asocia con mayor riesgo de muerte, ictus o accidente isquémico transitorio/embolia sistémica o complicaciones hemorrágicas. Estos hallazgos confirman los resultados de los ensayos clínicos y los expande al ámbito de la práctica clínica real


Introduction and objectives: Valvular heart disease in patients with atrial fibrillation included in clinical trials with direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) is common and is associated with worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of valvular heart disease and its influence on clinical events in real-world clinical practice. Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter registry including 2297 consecutive patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation initiating DOAC between January 2013 and December 2016. Valvular heart disease was defined as moderate or severe involvement. The primary study endopoint was the composite of death, stroke or transient ischemic attack/systemic embolism or major bleeding. A competing risks analysis was carried out using a Fine and Gray regression model, with death being the competing event. Results: A total of 499 (21.7%) patients had significant valvular heart disease. The most common form was mitral regurgitation (13.7%). Patients with valvular heart disease were older and had more comorbidities. After multivariable analysis, valvular heart disease was associated with a higher risk for the primary endpoint (HR, 1.54; 95%CI, 1.22-1.94; P<.001), death (HR, 1.44; 95%CI, 1.09-1.91, P=.010), and major bleeding (HR, 1.85; 95%CI, 1.23-2.79, P=.003), but there was no association with thromboembolic events (P >.05). Conclusions: In patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation initiating DOACs, valvular heart disease is common and increases the risk of mortality, stroke, transient ischemic attack/systemic embolism, and major bleeding complications. These findings confirm the results of clinical trials and expand them to a real-life clinical setting

BACKGROUND: Antiplatelet therapy (APT) use in combination with oral anticoagulation is common among patients with atrial fibrillation, but there is scarce information regarding its effect on outcomes in patients on non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC). We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of APT use in a 'real-world' cohort of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients initiating NOAC. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective multicentre study including 2361 consecutive NVAF patients initiating NOAC between January 2013 and December 2016. Patients with an acute ischaemic event within the last 12 months (acute coronary syndrome, stroke or revascularization) were excluded. Patients were followed up, and all clinical events were recorded at 3 months. The primary outcome of the study was major bleeding, and the secondary outcomes were stroke, nonfatal myocardial infarction, intracranial bleeding and death. RESULTS: One hundred forty-five (6.1%) patients received concomitant APT, and aspirin was the more common (79%). At 3 months, 25 (1.1%) patients had major bleeding, 8 (0.3%) had nonfatal myocardial infarction, 7 (0.3%) had ischaemic stroke, and 40 (1.7%) died. After multivariate adjustment, concomitant APT was associated with higher risk for major bleeding (HR = 3.62, 95% CI 1.32-9.89; P = .012), but was not associated with a higher risk of other clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant APT use is uncommon among these patients and does not seem to be associated with lower rates of ischaemic events or death. However, there are signals for an increased risk of bleeding, which reinforces current guideline recommendations.

Aim: To analyse the effectiveness and safety of DOAC (direct oral anticoagulants) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients attending clinical practice.Methods: Retrospective study of AF patients who started treatment with DOAC from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2016 in three Spanish hospitals. Mean follow-up was 1.6 years. The primary outcomes were rates of all-cause death, ischaemic stroke, and bleeding. These outcomes were also studied depending on correct dosage adjustment and standard/adjusted dose.Results: The study included 2494 patients (age = 76.0 ± 9.5 years, CHA2DS2-VASc = 4.0 ± 1.6). The most prescribed DOAC was rivaroxaban (41.1%). Patients taking dabigatran were the youngest (mean age = 73.1 ± 10.3 years), with better kidney function (mean CrCl = 80.6 ± 35.8 ml/min) and lower CHA2DS2-VASc (3.7 ± 1.4) and HAS-BLED (2.1 ± 0.9) scores. Patients taking apixaban were the oldest, and had the highest CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores (4.3 ± 1.6 and 2.6 ± 0.9, respectively). Rates of stroke/major bleeding/intracranial bleeding were 1.8/3.0/0.3 events per 100 patient-years, respectively, with no differences among DOAC. Based on dose adjustment according to technical data, it was observed that 517 patients (23.5%) received DOAC doses inconsistent with labelling (p < .001) and, within this group, under-dosed patients had a higher death rate although it did not reach a significant result after multivariate adjustment.Conclusions: The results of safety and efficacy are very similar to those of other previously published national registries. There were no differences among the different types of DOAC regarding outcomes. However, it was found that people taking the adjusted dose of the drug seemed to have a higher risk of death. A non-negligible proportion of patients received DOAC doses inconsistent with labelling (mostly underdose).

Easy, economic, precise species authentication is currently necessary in many areas of research and diagnosis in molecular biology applied to conservation studies of endangered species. Here, we present a new method for the identification of three fox species of the Lycalopex genus in Chile. We developed an assay based on high-resolution melt analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome B gene, allowing a simple, low cost, fast, and accurate species determination. To validate the assay applicability for noninvasive samples, we collected fecal samples in the Atacama Desert, finding unexpectedly one species outside of its known distribution range. We conclude that the assay has a potential to become a valuable tool for a standardized genetic monitoring of the Lycalopex species in Chile.

The potential of augmented reality (AR) technology for the study of spatial memory and orientation is a new research field. AR defines systems that attempt to enhance the user's experience with the physical world. In our app, we enhance the sense of sight by adding interactive 3D elements to the real environment. Our app can be used in any real environment so that the experimental conditions during the tasks and the way in which an individual navigates are similar to those used in real life. With AR, the experimenter has a high level of control of the task and can store the participant's responses accurately. The classical factors that influence an individual's performance on virtual spatial tasks are gender and cognitive factors. The influence of emotional factors on spatial performance has been studied more recently. Since AR tasks for the study of spatial memory and spatial orientation are new developments, little is known about the factors that are related to performance on tasks of this type. In our study, we tested 46 young adults (26 women) in an AR object-location task that was performed in a building. The participants had to memorize the position of eight virtual objects while they were walking through the environment. We also assessed the participants' performance on an object-recall task, a map-pointing task, and a paper-and-pencil spatial orientation task. The self-reported importance of different spatial strategies for wayfinding and the levels of trait anxiety and wayfinding anxiety were also evaluated. Our findings indicate that men performed better on the spatial paper-and-pencil test and spent more time completing the learning phase of the AR task. The spatial memory for the location of the objects in AR and on the map correlated positively. Anxiety was related to individual differences in the self-reported use of a spatial orientation strategy, but the association among them was weak. Trait anxiety was positively related to the time employed by the participants during the learning phase of the AR task, whereas wayfinding anxiety correlated negatively with the preference for an orientation strategy. Our results highlight the importance of anxiety in spatial orientation.
