RESUMO

Bimetallic oxides have significant attraction as supercapacitor electrode materials due to their highly reversible redox processes, which are commonly associated with their surface chemistry and morphological features. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical evaluation of bimetallic oxides with different molar compositions of Co and V (Co0.6V0.4, Co0.64V0.36, Co0.68V0.32, and Co0.7V0.3 denoted as S1, S2, S3, and S4 samples, respectively). The materials were synthesized by a modified solvothermal method using glycerol as a stabilizing agent, characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, N2 adsorption isotherms, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanostatic charged/discharged in a three-electrode cell. The role of the CoV oxide compositions on the pseudocapacitive properties was studied through the analysis of the energy storage mechanism following the power law and Dunn's methodology to obtain the b values. An important finding of this work is that CoV oxides exhibited electrochemical characteristics of a pseudocapacitive electrode material even though the charge storage occurs in bulk. This behavior is consistent with the pseudocapacitance generated by redox processes, showing b values of 0.67, 0.53, 0.75, and 0.84, with a capacitive current contribution of 74, 74, 63, and 70% analyzed at a scan rate of 1 mV s-1, for S4, S3, S2, and S1 samples, respectively. Co0.7V0.3 (S4) oxide presented the highest specific capacitance of 299 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 with a Coulombic efficiency of 93% tested at 4 A g-1. The better electrochemical performance of this sample was attributed to the synergistic effect of the Co and V atoms since a minimum amount of V in the structure may distort the crystal lattice and improve the electrolyte diffusion, in addition to the formation of several oxidation states due to reduction of V5+, including V3+ and V4+ as well as to the formation of the metastable V4O9.

RESUMO

Untreated congenital toxoplasmosis remains an important cause of neurologic and ocular disease worldwide. However, congenitally infected infants may not have signs and symptoms their physicians recognize, leading to delayed diagnosis and missed opportunities for treatment. We describe a pair of twins diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis at 11 months of age following incidental detection of leukocoria in one twin.

RESUMO

The confinement of small amounts of benzene in InOF-1 (Bz@InOF-1) shows a contradictory behavior in the capture of CO2 and SO2. While the capture of CO2 is increased 1.6 times, compared to the pristine material, the capture of SO2 shows a considerable decrease. To elucidate these behaviors, the interactions of CO2 and SO2 with Bz@InOF-1 were studied by DFT periodical calculations postulating a plausible explanation: (a) in the case of benzene and CO2, these molecules do not compete for the preferential adsorption sites within InOF-1, providing a cooperative CO2 capture enhancement and (b) benzene and SO2 strongly compete for these preferential adsorption sites inside the MOF material, reducing the total SO2 capture.

RESUMO

Patients with heart transplantation have a high incidence of infectious complications, especially fungal infections. The aim of the systematic review was to determine the best pharmacological strategy to prevent fungal infections among patients with heart transplant. We searched the PubMed and Embase databases for studies reporting the effectivenesss of pharmacologic strategies to prevent fungal infections in adult patient with a heart transplant. Our search yielded five studies (1176 patients), four of them with historical controls. Two studies used inhaled amphotericin B deoxycholate, three used itraconazole and one used targeted echinocandin. All studies showed significant reduction in the prophylaxis arm. Different products, doses and outcomes were noted. There is a highly probable benefit of prophylaxis use, however, better studies with standardised doses and comparators should be performed.

RESUMO

In North America (NA) and Europe, the majority of toxoplasmosis cases are benign and generally asymptomatic, whereas in South America (SA) toxoplasmosis is associated with much more severe symptoms in adults and congenitally infected children. The reasons for these differences remain unknown; currently, there is little information from patients in either region on how the immune system responds to infection with Toxoplasma gondii. Here, we report the relative abundance of 51 serum cytokines from acute and chronic toxoplasmosis cohorts of pregnant women from the United States, where approximately one-half of clinical isolates are Type II, and Colombia, where clinical isolates are generally "atypical" or Type I-like strains. Surprisingly, the results showed notably lower levels of 23 cytokines in acutely infected patients from the United States, relative to uninfected US controls. In acutely infected Colombian patients, however, only 8 cytokine levels differed detectably with 4 being lower and 4 higher relative to uninfected controls. Strikingly, there were also differences in the cytokine profiles of the chronically infected patients relative to uninfected controls in the US cohort. Hence, Toxoplasma appears to specifically impact levels of circulating cytokines, and our results may partly explain region-specific differences in the clinical spectrum of toxoplasmosis.

RESUMO

Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of three automated immunoassays for the detection of IgM and IgG Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using sera of pregnant women living in Colombia, a Latin American country with a high seroprevalence. Methods: A total of 905 sera were tested for IgM antibodies and 914 for IgG antibodies with AxSYM, VIDAS and VIDIA immunoassays. Discrepancies were resolved by using the dye test for IgG antibodies, and the ISAGA test for IgM. Results: The overall agreement between AxSYM, VIDAS and VIDIA assays was excellent for detection of IgG and IgM antibodies, and discrepancies were relatively rare (3.6% and 5.5% of sera for IgG and IgM antibodies, respectively). The performance of the three immunoassays was similar for the detection of IgG antibodies with high sensitivity (100.00% for VIDIA, 99.59% for VIDAS, 99.38% for AxSYM) and specificity (99.04% for VIDIA, 98.82% for AxSYM, 98.57% for VIDAS). The specificity for IgM antibodies was excellent for the three immunassays (99.88% for VIDIA, 99.76% for AxSYM and VIDAS). The sensitivity of the detection of IgM antibodies was higher with VIDIA (95.12%) than with VIDAS (76.74%) and AxSYM (61.90%) assays. The correlation between IgG titers was limited between AxSYM and VIDAS assays and between AxSYM and VIDIA assays, but was excellent between VIDIA and VIDAS assays. Conclusions: Our study performed with Latin American sera confirmed the excellent specificity of AxSYM, VIDAS and VIDIA assays for the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies already reported in other countries. The sensitivity of the detection of IgG antibodies was slightly higher with VIDIA than with VIDAS and AxSYM assays. The sensitivity of the detection of IgM antibodies was higher with VIDIA than with VIDAS and AxSYM assays.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of toxoplasma antibodies among pregnant women in Cali, Colombia. In 2005, 955 pregnant women were tested for IgG and IgM antibodies and sociodemographic information was collected. Their average age was 25.1 years, overall IgG seroprevalence 45.8% (95% CI: 41.8%, 48.2%), IgM 2.8% (95% CI: 1.5%, 3.6%). Seroprevalence increased significantly with age, 39.0% in 14 to 19 years to 55.3% in 30 to 39 years (P = 0.001). There was a significant trend toward a higher seroprevalence in the lower socioeconomic strata (SES) (low: 49.0%, high: 29%, P = 0.004). The increase in seroprevalence by age was more significant in the lower socioeconomic strata (P = 0.002). Our results suggest a higher prevalence when compared with those of the national 1980 (33-37.6%) survey. In contrast to reports from other regions of the world, Cali has not seen a decrease in T. gondii seroprevalence over the past 25 years.
