Autolytic effect of the antibiotic produced by Myxococcus coralloides D.

Myxococcus coralloides D secretes an antibiotic, named corallolysin, when grown on a rich medium. When a critical concentration is reached, this antibiotic lyses the producer bacterium either during vegetative growth or during morphogenesis. Corallolysin has not effect on resting cells nor on myxospores. The autolytic effect is caused by the early inhibition of RNA synthesis.

[Characteristics of the patient overusing on-demand general medical services]. / Características del paciente hiperfrecuentador de las consultas de demanda de medicina general.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics and reasons for consultation of the patient who over-uses on-demand general medical services. DESIGN: A case-control study of a sample of over-user patients and a control group of normal users. SETTING: The Chantrea Health Centre in Pamplona during 1991. PATIENTS AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS: An age and gender-stratified sample of 411 over user patients and a control group of normal users were selected. MAIN MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Over-users corresponded to 5% to those attending. We found no significant differences for gender, but we did for age (p < 0.001), regarding the control group; 84% of over-users had a chronic associated pathology. Comparatively, over-users made more bureaucratic and prescription visits (35%) and attended less scheduled appointments. CONCLUSIONS: The over-users is associated to being older and especially to having a chronic pathology and not attending scheduled appointments.

[Endoscopic treatment of ureteral lithiasis. Results of our second series of 100 cases]. / Tratamiento endoscópico de la litiasis ureteral. Resultados de nuestra segunda centena de casos.

The combined utilization of transurethral ureterorenoscopy (TUR) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) have caused a revolution in the treatment of ureteral lithiasis. We present a total 113 TUR due to ureteral lithiasis performed in period of 20 months, from March 1988 to November 1989. In the last ten months of the study we used TUR an ESWL for the treatment of ureteral lithiasis. Results show success in 92.93% of the treatments; 8 cases of open surgery (7.07%), five of these were performed during the first 10 months of the study, when ESWL was not available, with only 2 serious complications (1.75%) and one death due to massive pulmonary embolism. TUR is an unsubstitutable technique for the treatment of ureteral lithiasis and when combined with ESWL obtains optimum results. It is our technique of choice in all cases non susceptible to treatment with in situ ESWL due to the impossibility of locating the lithiasis without auxiliary endourological manoeuvres.

Effect of phosphate on antibiotic and extracellular protein production by Myxococcus coralloides D.

The effect of inorganic phosphate concentrations on antibiotic and extracellular protein production by Myxococcus coralloides D have been examined. Antibiotic production by growing cells of this myxobacterium was maximal at phosphate concentrations of 10-20 mM, but was inhibited by concentrations higher than 20 mM. The total extracellular protein and the extracellular protein per cell ratio were independent of phosphate levels in the culture broth.
