OBJECTIVE: Optical spectroscopy-measured skin carotenoid status (SCS) has been validated for estimating fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake; however, there is limited research addressing SCS kinetics in whole-diet interventions. The aim of this controlled feeding trial was to explore SCS's response to carotenoid intake changes via whole-diet intervention, evaluating its biomarker potential. METHODS: Eighty participants ages 20 to 49 y, without underlying diseases, were randomly allocated to the high-carotenoid group (HG; n = 40) or control group (CG; n = 40). The HG consumed a high-carotenoid diet (21 mg total carotenoids/2000 kcal), whereas the CG consumed a control diet (13.6 mg total carotenoids/2000 kcal) for 6 wk. Subsequently, skin and blood carotenoid concentrations were tracked without intervention for 4 wk. SCS was measured weekly via resonance Raman spectroscopy, and serum carotenoid concentrations were analyzed biweekly using high-performance liquid chromatography. Baseline carotenoid and F&V intakes were assessed via a 3-d diet record. The kinetics of SCS and serum carotenoid concentrations were analyzed using a weighted generalized estimating equation. Pearson's correlation analyses were used to examine baseline correlations between SCS and dietary carotenoid and F&V intakes, as well as serum carotenoid concentrations. RESULTS: During the intervention, the HG showed a faster and greater SCS increase than the CG (difference in slope per week = 8.87 AU, Pinteraction <0.001). Baseline SCS had positive correlations with total carotenoid intake (r = 0.45), total F&V intake (r = 0.49), and total serum carotenoid concentration (r = 0.79; P < 0.001 for all). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that SCS is a valid biomarker for monitoring changes in carotenoid intake through whole diet, which supports using SCS for assessing carotenoid-rich F&V intake.

Despite the enormous interest in high-areal-capacity Li battery electrodes, their structural instability and nonuniform charge transfer have plagued practical application. Herein, we present a cationic semi-interpenetrating polymer network (c-IPN) binder strategy, with a focus on the regulation of electrostatic phenomena in electrodes. Compared to conventional neutral linear binders, the c-IPN suppresses solvent-drying-induced crack evolution of electrodes and improves the dispersion state of electrode components owing to its surface charge-driven electrostatic repulsion and mechanical toughness. The c-IPN immobilizes anions of liquid electrolytes inside the electrodes via electrostatic attraction, thereby facilitating Li+ conduction and forming stable cathode-electrolyte interphases. Consequently, the c-IPN enables high-areal-capacity (up to 20 mAh cm-2) cathodes with decent cyclability (capacity retention after 100 cycles = 82%) using commercial slurry-cast electrode fabrication, while fully utilizing the theoretical specific capacity of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2. Further, coupling of the c-IPN cathodes with Li-metal anodes yields double-stacked pouch-type cells with high energy content at 25 °C (376 Wh kgcell-1/1043 Wh Lcell-1, estimated including packaging substances), demonstrating practical viability of the c-IPN binder for scalable high-areal-capacity electrodes.

Objective: Given the rapid growth of the wearable healthcare device market, we examined the associations among health-related and technology-related characteristics of using wearable healthcare devices and demonstrated how the associations differ between the US and Korean users. Methods: Online self-administered surveys were conducted with 4098 participants (3035 in the US and 1063 in Korea) who were recruited through two online survey service providers based on quota sampling. The primary outcome was the use of wearable healthcare devices. Seven health-related, two technology-related, and five socio-demographic factors were included as explanatory variables. Binary logistic regression analyses and a Chow test were conducted. Results: The health-related characteristics that were significantly associated with using wearable healthcare devices included disease-related worries (ß = 0.11**), health information seeking (ß = 0.26***), physical activity (ß = 0.62***), and health-related expenditures ($50-$199, ß = 0.38***; $200 or more, ß = 0.56***). Hedonic (ß = 0.33***), social (ß = 0.31***), and cognitive innovativeness (ß = 0.14*) also exhibited positive relationships. Younger, higher earner, and individuals with a child were more likely to use wearable healthcare devices. However, for Korean users, several associations disappeared including health information seeking, hedonic and social innovativeness, age, and household income. Conclusions: Key drivers of using wearable healthcare devices include greater concern about a specific illness, active engagement in health-promoting behaviors, and hedonic and social motivation to adopt new technologies. However, more country-specific considerations are needed in future studies to identify the main benefits for target markets.

Rechargeable calcium batteries have attracted increasing attention as promising multivalent ion battery systems due to the high abundance of calcium. However, the development has been hampered by the lack of suitable cathodes to accommodate the large and divalent Ca2+ ions at a high redox potential with sufficiently fast ionic conduction. Herein, we report a new intercalation host which presents 500 cycles with a capacity retention of 90% and a remarkable power capability at ~3.2 V (vs. Ca/Ca2+) in a calcium battery. The cathode material derived from Na0.5VPO4.8F0.7 is demonstrated to reversibly accommodate a large amount of Ca2+ ions, forming a series of CaxNa0.5VPO4.8F0.7 (0 < x < 0.5) phases without any noticeable structural degradation. The robust framework enables one of the smallest volume changes (1.4%) and the lowest diffusion barriers for Ca2+ among the cathodes reported to date, offering the basis for the outstanding cycle life and power capability.

Diabetes is one of the top 10 global causes of death. About one in 11 global adults have diabetes. As the disease progresses, the mortality rate increases, and complications can develop. Thus, early detection and effective management of diabetes are especially important. Herein, we present a novel glycated human serum albumin (GHSA) aptamer, i.e., GABAS-01, which has high affinity and specificity. The aptamer was selected by reduced graphene oxide-based systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichement (rGO-based SELEX) against GHSA. After five rounds of selection through gradually harsher conditions, GABAS-01 with high affinity and specificity for the target was obtained. GABAS-01 was labeled by FAM at the 5'-end and characterized by measuring the recovery of a fluorescence signal that is the result of fluorescence quenching effect of rGO. As a result, GABAS-01 had low-nanomolar Kd values of 1.748 ± 0.227 nM and showed a low limit of detection of 16.40 µg/mL against GHSA. This result shows the potential application of GABAS-01 as an effective on-site detection probe of GHSA. In addition, these properties of GABAS-01 are expected to contribute to detection of GHSA in diagnostic fields.

There are conflicting hypotheses regarding the initial pathogenesis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). One hypothesis characterizes it as inflammation of the median nerve caused by compression, while another hypothesis characterizes CTS as non-inflammatory fibrosis of the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT). This study aimed to investigate the differences in the ultrasonography parameters before and after a steroid injection, which is effective for CTS, to elucidate the initial pathogenesis of CTS and the mechanisms of action of the injected steroid. Fourteen hands from 14 healthy participants and 24 hands from 24 participants with mild CTS were examined. Dynamic movement and morphology of the median nerve before and after steroid injection were measured. There was no significant difference in the normalized maximal distance of the median nerve, which reflects the degree of fibrosis in the SSCT indirectly, during finger and wrist movements before and after the injection among patients with CTS (p > 0.05). Among the parameters that indirectly reflects the degree of median nerve compression, such as normalized maximal change in the aspect ratio of the minimum-enclosing rectangle (MER), maximal change in the median nerve perimeter, and maximal value of the median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA), statistically significant differences were not observed between values of the normalized maximal change in the aspect ratio of the MER and maximal change in the median nerve perimeter, during finger and wrist movements recorded before and after the injection in patients with CTS (p > 0.05). However, multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the change in the normalized maximal value of the median nerve CSA, according to finger and wrist movement was correlated with the administration of the steroid injection (p < 0.05). In conclusion, compared to that noted before steroid injection, the median nerve CSA noted during finger and wrist movements changed significantly after injection in patients with mild CTS. Given the improvement in median nerve swelling after steroid injection, but no improvement in the movement of the median nerve during finger and wrist movements, median nerve swelling due to compression (rather than fibrosis of the SSCT may be the initial pathogenesis of early-stage (mild) CTS, and the fibrous changes around the median nerves (SSCT) may be indicative of secondary pathology after median nerve compression. Further studies are required to validate the findings of our study and confirm the pathogenesis of CTS.

Coupling thin Li metal anodes with high-capacity/high-voltage cathodes such as LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) is a promising way to increase lithium battery energy density. Yet, the realization of high-performance full cells remains a formidable challenge. Here, we demonstrate a new class of highly coordinated, nonflammable carbonate electrolytes based on lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in propylene carbonate/fluoroethylene carbonate mixtures. Utilizing an optimal salt concentration (4 M LiFSI) of the electrolyte results in a unique coordination structure of Li+-FSI--solvent cluster, which is critical for enabling the formation of stable interfaces on both the thin Li metal anode and high-voltage NCM811 cathode. Under highly demanding cell configuration and operating conditions (Li metal anode = 35 µm, areal capacity/charge voltage of NCM811 cathode = 4.8 mAh cm-2/4.6 V, and anode excess capacity [relative to the cathode] = 0.83), the Li metal-based full cell provides exceptional electrochemical performance (energy densities = 679 Wh kgcell-1/1,024 Wh Lcell-1) coupled with nonflammability.

INTRODUCTION: An isolated injury to the tibial division is rare among compressive sciatic neuropathy. To date, isolated injury to the tibial division of the sciatic nerve after self-massage of the gluteal muscle has not been reported. Here, we report a case of compressive sciatic neuropathy diagnosed after self-massage of the gluteal muscle using magnetic resonance image (MRI) and ultrasound images and its associated therapeutic process. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old woman presented right lower extremity pain for the past 7 days. DIAGNOSIS: Electrophysiological findings were consistent with right tibial neuropathy proximal to the branch to hamstring muscles. However, T2-weighted MRI showed high signal intensity and swelling in the right sciatic nerves from the superior gemellus level to the quadratus femoris level. After considering both radiologic and electrophysiological findings, the patient was diagnosed with an isolated injury to the tibial division of the right sciatic nerve. INTERVENTIONS: The patient agreed to an ultrasound-guided perineural steroid injection upon receiving detailed explanation of the procedure. OUTCOMES: After the injection, there was significant improvement in pain. CONCLUSION: Therefore, in making a diagnosis of sciatic neuropathy, it may be important to find the lesion via MRI than relying solely on the patient's history or electrophysiologic study.

Although stroke is one of the most common causes of dysphagia, no studies have investigated the radionuclide salivagram as a predictor of aspiration pneumonia in patients with stroke. In addition, few researches on the risk factors of aspiration pneumonia in patients with subacute and chronic stroke undergoing rehabilitation in the rehabilitation unit have been rarely conducted. In this study, therefore, we investigated whether a radionuclide salivagram could predict aspiration pneumonia, and tried to find other clinical factors that may be helpful in predicting aspiration pneumonia in stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation in the rehabilitation department.From March 2013 and January 2018, a retrospective review of the medical records of 1182 subacute and chronic stroke patients who were admitted to rehabilitation department (South Korea) was carried out. We included 117 stroke patients with swallowing difficulties who were admitted to our rehabilitation department and satisfied our criteria retrospectively. Stroke lesion, the degree of paralysis, sex, age, onset duration, feeding methods, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), the presence of aspiration in VFSS or salivagram, the penetration-aspiration scale (PAS), and the total score of the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) were investigated by reviewing medical records.To evaluate the predictor of aspiration pneumonia for patients with stroke, multivariate logistic regression analysis with forward stepwise was performed. In the results of this study, only MMSE was significant as a clinical predictor, but not aspiration in VFSS or salivagram in multivariate analysis of supratentorial stroke patients (OR, 0.895) (95% CI, 0.830-964). In multivariate analysis of infratentorial stroke patients, combined results of salivagram and VFSS (aspiration in a salivagram or VFSS) (OR, 0.956) (95% CI, 0.919-995), and total MBI scores were significant as clinical predictors (OR, 24.882) (95% CI, 1.298-477.143).In conclusion, MMSE can be a clinical predictor of the occurrence of aspiration pneumonia in patients with supratentorial stroke. In contrast, total MBI score and combined results of a salivagram and VFSS can be clinical predictors of the occurrence of aspiration pneumonia in patients with infratentorial stroke.
