RESUMO

Physical and nutritional attributes of aonla juice treated with hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) at a pressure range of 5-15 psi and time between 5 to 30 min were evaluated. Based on maximum retention of bioactives, antioxidant activity, inactivation of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and physicochemical properties, HC conditions were optimized at 10 psi for 15 min, based on retention of 92.19% antioxidant activity, 88.01% vitamin C, and 96.80% of total phenolic content. Improved sedimentation index and viscosity were noted due to HC processing. The color profile of HC-treated samples was improved with less browning (63.86) and yellowing index (14.79) than that of control (browning index 64.61). Thermally treated samples inactivated 100% of PPO at 95 ℃ for 3 min, however, formation of a dark color with a browning index value of 67.38 was noted. The retention of various bioactives in thermally treated juice samples was much lesser than that of HC-treated samples. RESUMO

A 4-(o-chlorophenyl)-2-aminothiazole (CPAT) has been synthesized by reacting o-chloroacetophenone, iodine and thiourea under microwave irradiation as a green chemistry approach. The reactions proceed selectively and within a couple of minutes giving high yields of the products. The compound was characterized by elemental, spectral (UV-visible, IR, NMR and GC-MS), XRD and thermal analyses. The TG curve of the compound was analyzed to calculate various kinetic parameters (n, E, Z, ΔS and ΔG) by using Coats-Redfern (C.R.), MacCallum-Tanner (M.T.) and Horowitz-Metzger (H.M.) method. The compound was tested for the evaluation of antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and E. coli and antifungal activity against A. niger and C. albicans. The compound was evaluated for their in vitro nematicidal activity on plant parasitic nematode Meloidogyne javanica and molluscicidal activity on fresh water helminthiasis vector snail Lymnea auricularia. The compound is biologically active in very low concentration. X-ray diffraction study suggests a triclinic crystal system for the compound.

RESUMO

Different species of livestock was exposed to isoprocarb (MIPC 50 WP) sprays to monitor their health status. Exposure of livestock (calves, sheep, dogs and RIR birds) to 0.1 percent isoprocarb sprays on cotton crop for 6 hours a day for three consecutive days, showed no adverse effects on evident from clinical hematological and biochemical observations.

RESUMO

Investigations were undertaken to monitor the health status of farm labourers engaged in field sprays of MIPC 50 WP (Hexamicin, Mipcin), a carbamate insecticide on cotton crop, as per the protocol approved by the Central Insecticide Board The insecticide sprays (0.1%) were undertaken for six hr on three consecutive days on 1.2 hectares of cotton crop per day, using Aspee napsak sprayers. The spray personnel (mixers, loaders and sprayers) with protective clothing did not reveal any alteration in clinical, hematological and blood bio-chemical profile during exposure and post exposure periods. The spray personnel without protective clothing showed only a marginal reduction in their blood cholinesterase activity during the exposure period.

RESUMO

A blinded comparison of peptide nucleic acid-fluorescence in situ hybridization (PNA-FISH) with routine identification methods was performed on 74 consecutively positive mycobacterial liquid cultures. All Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultures (48 of 48) and 22 of 27 (81. 5%) nontuberculous cultures were correctly identified (including one mixed culture). Five isolates yielded no reaction with either probe and were identified as Mycobacterium xenopi, Mycobacterium fortuitum, or Mycobacterium flavescens.

RESUMO

One hundred nineteen smear-positive leprosy cases registered at an urban leprosy centre in Bombay in 1991 were followed for three years to study the 'drop-out' pattern in them and judge the utility of some corrective measures for the same. The measures included having maps showing exact location of the patient's residence, paying home visits on registration days and subsequent persuasion and counselling both at the clinic and at the residence of patients. The results were compared with 'drop-out' in smear-positive cases registered at the same centre in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1993. By introduction of the special measures, the 'drop-out' rate was significantly reduced from 52% (for other years) to 36% (1991). The expenses incurred for the successful recovery of 'drop-out prone' patients and ensuring regularity in drug intake was Rs. 659/- per patient. This study of 'drop-out' patient shows that there are three categories of the so-called drop-outs: (i) the false 'drop-outs' (51%): these patients get transfer as per their convenience to other leprosy centres or medical services (private practitioners or consultants) within the city (ii) drop-outs due to migration: the migration is forced on them due to some genuine reason, and (iii) persistent offenders: this is a group of adamant, non co-operative, or, distressed patients. For the first two category of patients it is advisable to introduce a good referral system. For the recalcitrant defaulters, supervised short-term drug therapy will probably be the best option.

RESUMO

Intestinal metaplasia has been shown by many investigators to be a premalignant state. Considering this fact, 722 gastric biopsies were studied, a 24% of association was found between gastric carcinoma and intestinal metaplasia and 27% of the cases with metaplasia were found in "apparently normal" or with benign stomach lesions. The group most affected was males over 61 years. Control endoscopy and biopsy was practiced in 17 patients with previously diagnosed intestinal metaplasia and in 11.7% gastric carcinoma with metaplasia was found. Therefore, it cannot be concluded that intestinal metaplasia is a premalignant condition, but its frequent association with gastric adenocarcinoma advises periodical examination by endoscopy in every patient over 40 years in which it is determined by biopsy.

RESUMO

In vitro cytotoxicity on human rhinopharynx KB cells, as well as hemolytic activity on human erythrocytes, was produced by an aqueous extract of the sponge Pachymatisma johnstonii. Optimum temperature and pH were the same for both activities (37 degrees C, pH 5). Moreover, after partial purification, the compounds involved were found in the same chromatographic fraction. These compounds were sensitive to treatment with dithiothreitol, but not with papain or trypsin. Cytotoxicity was destroyed by heat, whereas hemolysis subsisted after the extract was heated to 100 degrees C.

RESUMO

50 patients with cholestatic jaundice were studied with liver biopsy and fine needle transhepatic cholangiography. In 36 cases there was obstruction of the extrahepatic bile ducts. Rest of the cases had normal bile ducts. These findings were compared with those of the liver biopsy. When there is portal inflammation, bile pigment intracellular, cholangitis and bile plugs associated there was obstruction in 99 per cent of cases. A concluded that cholangiography should precede biopsy in cholestatic jaundice.

RESUMO

Adenine mononucleotides of transulucent and white parts in the adductor muscle of Japanese oyster are identified and measured after the separation on PEI-cellulose column. The studies are performed on oysters kept in aerated sea water aquarium. Results obtained for both tissues are compared each other and with the literature data.
