Introduction: Pain management is an important issue in a physiotherapeutic approach. Low back pain is one of the main causes of pain and disability in the world, and therefore we studied it using thermography as an imaging tool for objective evaluation and the visual analogue scale for subjective evaluation. Objective: To describe the correlation between subjects with low back pain (PL) and subjects without low back pain (PS) using the subjective sensation of pain and thermographic values as variables. Material and methods: A correlational study was carried out, evaluating 10 subjects divided into two groups, a group of subjects with low back pain and a group without low back pain. The temperature was recorded in degrees Celsius, using thermograms and marking thermal points to evaluate each area, which was correlated with the pain rating initially established by the subjects. Results: The subjects without low back pain did not show abnormal temperature variations, and showed healthy musculature. In contrast, 2 subjects with low back pain showed abnormal thermal variations, an indication of probable muscle damage. The other 3 subjects did not show a relationship between pain and thermographic response. Conclusions: The pain-thermography relationship showed a negative Pearson correlation for the abdominal region and an extremely low positive correlation for the lumbar region, with a statistical significance index greater than .05 (CI). Therefore, in this study no connection was found between pain index and temperature by muscle region. Infrared thermography proved to be a tool capable of detecting thermal alterations in real time, in potentially injured anatomical areas.

RESUMO

This paper reports on an investigation into the thermally stimulated luminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) characteristics of novel luminescent phosphor. A new Pr3+-doped, lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3)-based luminescent phosphor is developed. Samples of LaAlO3:Pr3+ were irradiated to beta doses, in air, from 0.1Gy up to 50Gy and then were analyzed using both TL and continuous wavelength OSL (CW-OSL) techniques to determine their luminescent characteristics. This phosphor shows a TL glow curve, after its irradiation to beta radiation, with two TL peaks: one located around 160°C and a second at 300°C. CW-OSL response presented a fast decay into the first 20s of blue light stimulation. TL and CW-OSL response as a function of beta radiation dose were linear in the studied dose range. The high sensitivity of the CW-OSL and TL response will make this phosphor suitable for beta radiation detection. Finally, the kinetic parameters of activation energy, frequency factor and kinetic order were analyzed in the TL response using computerized glow curve deconvolution based on general order kinetic model.

RESUMO

Thermoluminescent (TL) response of trivalent praseodymium ion doped lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3:Pr3+) obtained by Pechini method and Spray Dryer was studied. TL response of LaAlO3:Pr3+ powders submitted at 1600°C exhibited one peak centered at 157°C. Sensitivity of LaAlO3:Pr3+ was improved in around 90 times compared with undoped LaAlO3. TL response as a function of wavelength showed a maximum in 230nm. Dosimetric characteristics of LaAlO3:Pr3+ under UVR radiation effects were analyzed. Evaluation of activation energy was obtained by Glow Fit v.1.3 software. Experimental results about thermoluminescent characteristics of LaAlO3:Pr3+ suggest as good candidate to be employed as a complementary thermoluminescent device with other TL phosphors as aluminum oxide.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It has been identified shared allergens from whole body between Blatella germanica and Periplaneta americana. It has been reported high correlation between both cockroaches. OBJECTIVE: To estimate correlation between skin test for two major species of intradomiciliary cockroaches. METHODS: It was included patients with clinical diagnostic of allergy pathology whom attended to external consult of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service of the Hospital Universitario de Puebla in a period of six months, prick skin tests with standardized antigens of Blatella germanica and Periplaneta americana were made. RESULTS: One hundred twenty patients were enrolled in the study, 54.2% were women and 45.8% were men, with a mean age of 15.7 years old. The correlation coefficient between Germany cockroach and American cockroach to erythema was 0.49 and to papule was 0.40. CONCLUSION: The outcomes showed a moderate correlation or a considerable relation between both cockroaches whether erythema or papule. Based on the results presented, we suggest to evaluate both antigens in order to improve diagnostic accuracy.

RESUMO

The ablation of cardiac arrhythmias by radiofrequency has changed radically the treatment of arrhythmias. We present the case of a woman with cirrhosis and no structural heart disease, who was severely limited in her activities because of drug-refractory paroxysmal supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. She underwent an atrio-ventricular node ablation by radiofrequency. She was discharged with no antiarrhythmic drugs and on a permanent cardiac pacing. She showed obvious improvement in her quality of life.

RESUMO

A two year five months old girl is presented with chromosomic complement 47,XXX/48,XXXX/49,XXXXX and presence of 2, 3 and 4 corpuscles in the nuclei of epithelial cells of oral mucosa. It is clinically characterized by short stature, mental retardation, generalized hypotony, bilateral elbow sub-luxation, mesotaurodontism and patent ductus arteriosus. The comparison of the clinical findings between the reported mosaics and the present case indicate the dealing with a specific pattern, recognizable clinically. In the etiologic analysis of this disease the review of pertinent literature suggests the occurrence of successive non-disjunction of the chromosomes X in more than one postzygotic divisions originating more than two stem-cell lines.
