RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of odontoplasty on apparent digestibility of diet for horses, consumption time, and particle size of feces. Nine horses were used, aged 14.5±3.3 years and weightng 531±38.7kg. The diet consisted of 1.5% of live weight (LW) in Tifton 85 hay and 0.75% of LW in concentrate for both assays. The experiment consisted of two tests of apparent digestibility using the method of total collection, before and after the odontoplasty, where the consumption time of hay and concentrate was also evaluated and the particle size of the feces was analyzed. An effect (P<0.05) of odontoplasty on the apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber was observed. Effect of the consumption time for the concentrate (P<0.05) was observed, but not for the forage (P<0.05). There was more retention (P<0.05) of the fecal particles in the sieves of bigger granulometry. The odontoplasty increases the digestibility of dietary nutrients and feces particle size, without changing feces quality. Animals after the procedure have shorter concentrate consumption time.(AU)

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Leaves of Pyrostegia venusta are popularly used to treat vitiligo; however, none in vivo study showed its ability. AIM OF THE STUDY: The overall objective of the present study was to evaluate the antiinflammatory and hyperpigmentant activities of hydroethanolic (HE) extract of leaves from P. venusta in animal models of vitiligo induced by croton oil and monobenzone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antiinflamatory and antioxidative effects of topical and oral administration of HE extract of P. venusta were evaluated in Swiss mice on edema model induced by croton oil, and further the N-acetyl-b-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity, cell infiltration, and cytokine and reactive species oxygen (ROS) levels. The involvement on mice pigmentation, cell infiltration and cytokine levels were evaluated on vitiligo model induced by monobenzone in C56BL/6 mice. RESULTS: HE of P. venusta by gavage (300 mg/kg) reduced NAG activity in 32.5 ± 5% on mouse ear edema induced by croton oil. Similarly, cell infiltration was lower (42.3 ± 5.9%) when compared to control group, as well as interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels, in 44.1 ± 9.7%, 71.9 ± 22.2% and to basal levels, respectively. Topical treatment with HE of P. venusta (10%) diminished cell infiltration (67.7 ± 7.1%) and ROS levels (total reduction). P. venusta either by gavage (300 mg/Kg) or topically (10%) increased epidermal melanin level (116.5 ± 13% and 100 ± 16.9%, respectively), diminished dermal depigmentation (36.0 ± 6.7% and 38.2 ± 6.2%, respectively), as well as tissue TNF-α levels (68.2 ± 11.6% and 99.2 ± 12.1%, respectively) and cell infiltration (basal levels and 94.3 ± 9.17%, respectively). However, only topical treatment with HE of P. venusta altered melanin specific marker in hair follicles. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time these data show that topical and oral administrations of P. venusta have significant antiinflammatory and hyperpigmentant effects, demonstrating different topical and systemic effects through two animal models. Together these models are capable to mimic several features founded in vitiligo, and the results support the ethnopharmacological use of P. venusta.

RESUMO

In this work, 25,806 potentially amplifiable microsatellite loci (PAL) were identified in pejerrey, (Odontesthes humensis), with 21% of dinucleotide, 22% trinucleotide, 37% tetranucleotide, 13% pentanucleotide and 7% hexanucleotide. Of the total loci, 167 were classified as "Best PAL", more likely to be variables in populations. The results show that with a small coverage of the genome it was possible to identify a large number of microsatellite loci...

Rhamdia quelen is an important Neotropical catfish species for fisheries and aquaculture in southern Brazil, where it is called Jandia. Like other native Brazilian species of economic importance, R. quelen genetics needs more attention for animal breeding programs. The growth hormone gene is known to be linked to a number of molecular markers and quantitative trait loci. We sequenced the coding region of the growth hormone gene with the primer walking technique. As in other Siluriformes, the R. quelen growth hormone gene has four introns and five exons, in a 1465-bp coding region. The tertiary structure of the encoded protein was predicted by bioinformatics; it has four α-helix structures connected by loops, which form a compressed complex maintained by two disulfide bridges.

RESUMO

The goal of this research was to evaluate the ability of the genotyping information available in the Brazilian Criollo Horse Stud Book to describe the genetic variability of the breed and the exclusion probability determined in comparative tests. Altogether, two softwares were used in the analyses of the available genotypes: Cervus 3.0.3 and Genepop 4.0. Eight microsatellite markers totaled 109 alleles, with an average of 13.6 +/- 0.6 alleles per locus. Large differences between expected and observed heterozygosity were ubiquitous (0.821 +/- 0.07 and 0.470 +/- 0.17, respectively). Although the estimated null allele frequency caused initial concern (0.284 +/- 0.199), it is likely that it was a reflection of the inbreeding coefficients found (0.432 +/- 0.184). All loci showed significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with heterozygote deficit (P < 0.0001) and genotypic linkage disequilibrium with at least one marker. The high polymorphic information content (0.798 +/- 0.088) could not warrant exclusion power for three loci (HMS7, HMS6 and HTG4) above 50% (0.491 +/- 0.158). However, combined exclusion probability reached 99.61%, a level close to ideal. The results demonstrate the excellent performance of the markers assessed in describing the genetic status of the breed and suggest the considerable ability to establish parentage.

RESUMO

Thymomas are tumors characterized by a remarkable morphological heterogeneity and variable clinical behavior. This tumor has unique clinical associations, most notably with hematological abnormalities and myasthenia gravis. According with the Müller-Hermelink criteria, there are significant differences between the histological types of thymomas and the association with myasthenia gravis. Among the different histological types, medullary thymoma is the least frequent variant associated with this autoimmune disease. In this report we describe a case of medullary thymoma presenting in a 71-year- old woman with a myasthenic syndrome.

RESUMO

The major features of the nevoid basal-cell carcinoma syndrome are epidermal multiple cell carcinomas, cysts of the jaws and skeletal abnormalities, mainly in the ribs. The authors have reviewed the literature concerning multiple anomalies which are associated to this syndrome, and report a clinical case, emphasizing the advantages of early diagnosis, mainly for dermal and maxillary lesions.

RESUMO

(1) Experimentally observed changes of contractile force induced by changes in the pattern of stimulation of frog ventricular myocardium were compared with predictions computed on the basis of a model for the contractile conditioning, proposed in a previous paper. (2) For this purpose, two functions (Potentiation and Inhibition) which describe in the model the effect of previous contractions, were determined experimentally. (3) It is shown that the model adequately predicts : force-frequency curve Inotropic Effect Curves at different basal frequencies, effect of the suppression of a contraction in a sequence of definite frequency, frequency-staircases, and strength-interval curves. (4) The formal characteristics of the model are discussed, and it is suggested that the potentiation mechanism results from the recirculation of activator calcium in two types of compartments, from which calcium passes to the myofilaments during the contractions or is lost to the exterior with first order kinetics during the rest period. Possible locations for these compartments are proposed. Various hypothesis on the nature of the inhibitory mechanism are considered.

RESUMO

(1) The effects of previous contractions on the actual contractile strength is studied in strips of toad ventricle. The inotropic effect is quantified by superposing a conditioning contraction to a rhythm of definite frequency, its measure being the difference in strength between a rhythm contraction in the presence and in the absence of the conditioning one. (2) The inotropic effect is studied as a function of the interval between the actual and conditioning contractions. Depressed sections of the curve, associated to shortened action potentials, are detected and excluded. (3) The inotropic effect is always positive at low frequencies, but at higher frequencies and long intervals it becomes negative. (4)In high calcium concentration the inotropic effect is always negative and does not depend on frequency. Morever, the joint effect of two previous contractions is equal to the sum of the individual effects of each one. (5) The results are interpreted in terms of two independent elementary processes, one of which potentiates whereaas the other inhibits the strength of contraction. The former disappears in high calcium. Assuming some simple properties for these processes a mathematical expression has been achieved. This expression describes the inotropic effect of any sequence of contractions as a function of intervals involved.
