RESUMO

Phage lambda's cosB packaging recognition site is tripartite, consisting of 3 TerS binding sites, called R sequences. TerS binding to the critical R3 site positions the TerL endonuclease for nicking cosN to generate cohesive ends. The N15 cos (cos(N15)) is closely related to cos(λ), but whereas the cosB(N15) subsite has R3, it lacks the R2 and R1 sites and the IHF binding site of cosB(λ). A bioinformatic study of N15-like phages indicates that cosB(N15) also has an accessory, remote rR2 site, which is proposed to increase packaging efficiency, like R2 and R1 of lambda. N15 plus five prophages all have the rR2 sequence, which is located in the TerS-encoding 1 gene, approximately 200 bp distal to R3. An additional set of four highly related prophages, exemplified by Monarch, has R3 sequence, but also has R2 and R1 sequences characteristic of cosB-λ. The DNA binding domain of TerS-N15 is a dimer.

Introduction. Malocclusions are considered alterations or occlusal disorders associated with aesthetic, ethnic and cultural conditions. Malocclusions have been studied and have been related to the influence of dental caries in the development of temporal or permanent dentition and to the presence of poor oral hygiene as possible risk factors. Although there is an abundance of literature related to this topic, very few studies have demonstrated the relationship between body posture and the presence of malocclusions. The objective of the present paper was to determine the frequency of malocclusions associated with posture problems in a population of school children from the State of Mexico. Methods. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out. Clinical evaluation of malocclusions was performed following the Angle and WHO criteria for the evaluation of postural attitude of children considering correct and incorrect categories by observing their spinal columns and possible alterations in their frontal and sagittal planes. Results. Following the criteria of Angle, the prevalence of malocclusions in the population of the present study was class 1 in 55.2% of the subjects. According to the WHO criteria, the highest frequency corresponded to code 1 of discrete anomalies in 70.7% of the subjects. The prevalence of incorrect position was 52.5%. In our study, results show that when position alterations are present, it corresponds to the presence of malocclusions. According to the classification of Angle and posture alterations, odds ratio (OR) was 10.5 (95% CI 7.0-18.9; p <0.0001) and occlusion conditions related to the WHO with posture alterations were OR 24.4 (95% CI 9.9-65.0; p <0.0001). Conclusions. When malocclusions are shown in children of this age, they are frequently related to posture problems. This stage of life is important due to the fact that this is the period when the majority of morphological and functional changes occur. During this period of life, supervision must be given in order for the child to attain ideal posture as well as functional occlusion.

RESUMO

Bacterial pollution in the Houston metropolitan area (Texas) watersheds was studied using statistical methods to determine the Escherichia coli levels and causes of their spatial and temporal variability. Houston bayous generally exhibit elevated E. coli concentrations. The more urban watersheds had higher concentration ranges and geometric means and had more spatial variation with higher overall ranges at downstream monitoring stations. They also were less sensitive to temperature variations and more strongly influenced by rainfall events. The median flow in the more urban bayous is predominantly wastewater. Frequent rainfall in the region, combined with relatively long travel times in the bayous, results in elevated bacterial levels in the bayous. Multiple regression models using water quality parameters were more representative on the segment level and not at the watershed level and may not be useful for predictions that rely on conventional water quality measures, particularly in urban watersheds, such as those studied here. Cluster analysis for the segments resulted in two distinct clusters differentiated by their developed land-use, population density, domestic animal density, and grassy land-use.

RESUMO

In some Sonoran Desert Cactaceae the primary root has a determinate root growth: the cells of the root apical meristem undergo only a few cell division cycles and then differentiate. The determinate growth of primary roots in Cactaceae was found in plants cultivated under various growth conditions, and could not be reverted by any treatment tested. The mechanisms involved in root meristem maintenance and determinate root growth in plants remain poorly understood. In this study, we have shown that roots regenerated from the callus of two Cactaceae species, Stenocereus gummosus and Ferocactus peninsulae, have a determinate growth pattern, similar to that of the primary root. To demonstrate this, a protocol for root regeneration from callus was established. The determinate growth pattern of roots regenerated from callus suggests that the program of root development is very stable in these species. These findings will permit future analysis of the role of certain Cactaceae genes in the determinate pattern of root growth via the regeneration of transgenic roots from transformed calli.
