A case of small-cell carcinoma (SCC) of the parotid gland in an 82-year-old woman is reported. SCC arising in major salivary glands are extremely rare. By immunohistochemical study, this case was classified as a small-cell carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation. These neoplasms seem to have a far better prognosis than those arising from the bronchial tree. Treatment is mainly local and regional surgery with complementary radiotherapy.

RESUMO

The cytopathologic findings in 17 patients with hydatid cyst are reported. All patients but one were referred for evaluation of a tumor mass. In 13 patients the aspirated material was diagnostic of hydatid cyst. In four patients only acellular laminated membranes were present in the aspirate and a presumptive cytopathologic diagnosis of hydatid cyst was made. Subsequent histologic studies confirmed the diagnosis of hydatidosis in all patients. No complications were encountered. Fine-needle biopsy appears a safe diagnostic approach in the evaluation of suspected hydatid disease. The presence of acellular laminated membranes confirm the diagnosis of hydatid cyst.

RESUMO

We report a complicated case of hydatid cyst mimicking a renal tumor, diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The cytological features are described and the diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration biopsy is underscored.

RESUMO

A case of xantomatogranulomatous cholecystitis found in a review of 615 surgical gallbladders is reported, an incidence of 0.16%. Symptoms were those of acute cholecystitis. There was xantogranulomatous infiltration of the neighboring tissues. Both macroscopic and imaging features were those of a carcinomatous lesion. The definitive diagnosis was made by peroperative frozen sections.

RESUMO

A retrospective study of fine needle aspiration (FNA) of thyroid nodules was carried out in patients from the primary level of care in our city during the last four years. Overall 385 aspirations were carried out in 361 patients (93.2% females and 6.8% males). From the overall number of evaluated FNA, 88.31% had cytological criteria of benign disease; the remaining 11.7% corresponded to neoplastic lesions. Histological confirmation was obtained for all the latter. The patients with benign cytology underwent clinical follow up and eventual cytological controls. In the 45 instances of neoplastic cytology there were 2 false positive diagnoses (4.4%). The technique was highly cost effective. FNA should be include in the follow up of thyroid nodules, and it should be available by request from primary care teams.

RESUMO

A case of carcinoid tumor of the appendix with "signet ring" cells pattern and asymptomatic clinical course is presented. The tumor was detected during a Bilroth I gastrectomy procedure. Mucin-secreting cells with cytoplasms often containing argentaffin and argyrophil granules was the predominant histologic pattern. Lack of neuron-specific enolase activity and their positivity for lysozyme and EMA marker indicate an origin from crypt cell and not a neural crest source. After simple appendectomy, the patient was healthy 3 years following surgery.
