RESUMO

For establishing a sustainable society, it is crucial to reuse the organic waste as a material resource. Therefore, herein, we aim to pulverize the methane fermentation residue sludge by ball milling and high-speed agitation to directly utilize it as a liquid fertilizer. The solid particles in the sludge can be below 100 µm, corresponding to the nozzle diameter of the boom sprayer by both ball milling and high-speed agitation; when ball milling was carried out for at least 1 h, the ratio of coarse particles larger than 100 µm decreased by less than 10%. In addition, the phosphate-ion concentration in the sludge increased with a decrease in the particle size of solid in the sludge mainly due to increase in its specific surface area. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of various experimental conditions for ball milling on the pulverization efficiency. Results suggests that for grinding the soft solid particles in the sludge by ball milling, the volume ratio of the total medium balls and sludge, total volumes of the balls and sludge, and inner pot volume should be larger, while the ratio of the rotation speed to the critical rotation speed should be almost the same as those reported previously in the reports on grinding of inorganic particles to attain an effective pulverization.

RESUMO

HYPOTHESIS: It is important to elucidate the effect of the particle dispersion/aggregation state of electrode slurries on resulting electrodes for the development of superior lithium-ion batteries. Many studies have been conducted to characterize cathode slurries for lithium-ion batteries; however, the particle dispersion state of cathode slurries remains unclear. This study investigates the rheological behavior and the packing ability of the cathode slurries for obtaining a denser electrode with lower electric resistance. EXPERIMENTS: In addition to the conventional flow curve measurement, we measured the changes in the hydrostatic pressure of the slurries with time to evaluate their packing ability. The relationship between the properties of the cathode slurries and those of the as-cast cathodes was also investigated. FINDINGS: It was found that a slurry in which acetylene black powder forms a network structure, with sufficient strength and the ability to rapidly recover after breaking, yields a cathode with comparatively high density and comparatively low volume resistivity. It was also found that the normalized settling time of a cathode slurry determined from its change in hydrostatic pressure over time correlates well with both the density and volume resistivity of a resulting as-cast cathode.

RESUMO

The performance of lithium-ion battery electrodes is influenced by particle dispersion in the slurry used for their production. In this study, we elucidate the effects and mechanism of the binder mixing sequence on the characteristics of the slurry used in the production of negative electrodes. Therefore, we optimize the preparation of the negative electrode slurry by evaluating the electrode characteristics resulting from changing the binder mixing sequence. During the preparation of the electrode slurry, the state of the adsorption of the binder to the particle changes when the sequence of binder addition is changed. The change in the adsorption state of the binder influences the particle dispersion in the slurry, rheological properties of the slurry, and packing characteristics of the particles. Under the influence of the aforementioned changes, electrodes possessing identical compositions exhibited different performances. The slurry in which the particles were dispersed produced an electrode possessing a low volume-resistivity, whereas the slurry in which the particles were agglomerated produced an electrode with a high volume-resistivity. Evidently, controlling the adsorption state of the binder by altering the binder mixing sequence is essential for fabricating electrodes possessing a low volume-resistivity.

RESUMO

A newly identified chemical, 4-{3-[(3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino]propyl}-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-5-one (BAPP) was characterized as a plant immunity activator. BAPP enhanced disease resistance in rice against rice blast disease and expression of a defense-related gene without growth inhibition. Moreover, BAPP was able to enhance disease resistance in dicotyledonous tomato and Arabidopsis plants against bacterial pathogen without growth inhibition, suggesting that BAPP could be a candidate as an effective plant activator. Analysis using Arabidopsis sid2-1 and npr1-2 mutants suggested that BAPP induced systemic acquired resistance (SAR) by stimulating between salicylic acid biosynthesis and NPR1, the SA receptor protein, in the SAR signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Purpose: This article evaluates the clinical usefulness of an attachment involving a +20-D lens to gain extended field images on wide-angle optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods: An attachment with a +20-D lens was developed to take OCTA images of anterior segments, and it was used to obtain extended field images of the posterior segment in this study. Ten eyes of 5 individuals who did not have a history of ocular or systemic disease underwent wide-angle OCTA with a 12 × 12-mm center field using the PLEX Elite 9000 with and without the attachment. The ratio of the area of the center field to the area of the extended field with the attachment was calculated. Results: The mean area of the center image was 125 disc areas and that of the field extended by the attachment was 210 disc areas. The mean ratio between the center field and the extended field was 1.67. Conclusions: The attachment involving the +20-D lens seems to be clinically useful to gain extended field images on wide-angle OCTA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Three eyes of 2 cases had repeating recurrences and spontaneous closures of macular holes (MHs) after vitrectomy. CASES: A 66-year-old man had rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in his left eye and underwent vitrectomy with successful retinal reattachment. A full-thickness MH developed 1 year after the vitrectomy and spontaneously closed 1 month later. Opening and spontaneous closure of the MH recurred an additional 4 times over 7 years. An 80-year-old man had suffered intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation and underwent vitrectomy in his left eye. An MH developed in the eye 6 years and 3 months after the vitrectomy. Repeated opening and spontaneous closure of the MH occurred twice in the left eye. The same patient also suffered IOL dislocation and underwent vitrectomy in his right eye. An MH also developed in the right eye 2 years and 9 months after the vitrectomy. Repeated opening and spontaneous closure of the MH occurred 3 times in the right eye. OBSERVATIONS: The visual acuity was maintained at the last visit in both cases. CONCLUSIONS: MHs in vitrectomized eyes can show repeated recurrence and spontaneous closure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effectiveness of vitrectomy for diffuse diabetic macular edema (DDME) and its dependence on optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings. METHODS: The records of 65 patients and 81 eyes who received vitrectomy for DDME and followed up for at least 6 months were retrospectively reviewed. All eyes were classified according to their morphological characteristics on OCT including sponge-like diffuse retinal thickening (SDRT: n = 13), cystoid macular edema (CME: n = 42), serous retinal detachment (SRD: n = 13), and the combination of all morphological characteristics (FULL: n = 13). The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and spectral domain OCT were investigated preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: At six months after surgery, BCVA in logMAR units was significantly improved in all groups except the SDRT group. The improvement was -0.04 ± 0.20 in the SDRT group (P = 0.504), -0.16 ± 0.24 in the CME group (P < 0.01), -0.32 ± 0.32 in the SRD group (P < 0.01), and -0.26 ± 0.19 in the FULL group (P < 0.01), and significantly better in eyes with subretinal fluid (SRF; the SRD and FULL groups) than in eyes without SRF (the SDRT and CME groups, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Vitrectomy can be a useful treatment option for DDME, particularly for eyes with SRF.
