BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common oral malignancy. Some evidence indicated that there is a correlation between microRNA single nucleotide polymorphisms and the risk of oral cancer. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association between mir-499 polymorphism with the risk of oral cavity and oropharyngeal SCC in a subset of Iranian Population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control pilot study total of 112 participants including 56 histopathlogically confirmed oral and oropharyngeal SCC patients and 56 age- and sex-matched controls were included The mir-499 rs3746444 T/C polymorphism was detected using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. The comparisons of the distribution of the allele and genotype frequencies were performed using Chi-square test, and P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: The result of the present study indicated that the frequency distribution of mir-499 was not significantly different between cases and controls (P > 0.05). We also did not find any significant association between the risk of the cancer and mir-499 polymorphisms in the recessive (Odds ratio [OR]: 6.60; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.77-56.74; P = 0.11) and dominant (OR: 1; 95% CI: 0.37-2.74; P = 1) inheritance models even after adjustment for smoking. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicated that the polymorphisms of mir-499 are not associated with the risk of oral and oropharyngeal SCC in Iranian population. However, further large scale studies are needed to validate our findings.

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, implant insertion is accompanied by undesired consequences. As surgery techniques become more and more complex, an increase of intra- and post-op complications can be expected. Application of low-level laser (LLL) is one of the conservative approaches to control the complications with any side effects and low treatment costs. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of 650 nm LLL irradiation on the reduction of complications after advanced implant surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this triple-blinded clinical trial, 30 patients aged between 25 to 65 years were in need of bone graft or sinus lift procedure for simultaneously implant insertion. In the LLL treatment group, the surgical site of each implant was treated with 650 nm laser. The same method and duration were applied in the placebo group. The pain levels, facial swelling, and wound healing were evaluated. RESULTS: This study indicated that pain levels were reduced in the laser group (p <0.05). Also, facial swelling in the 3rd and 7th day after the surgery relieved more in laser group. Furthermore, investigation of the surgical site showed a higher level of wound healing in the laser group (p <0.05). CONCLUSION: Regarding the biological effects of advanced implant surgeries and accompanying complications, adjuvant treatment with a laser could significantly improve wound healing and reduce the severity and duration of pain and swelling. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This clinical trial demonstrates reductions of the level of pain, facial swelling and improvements of wound healing are followed by the use of low-level laser therapy.

BACKGROUND: The transfer of the tibialis posterior tendon to the dorsum of foot can restore the function of theparalyzed dorsiflexor muscles of the foot and ankle. In order to reduce the wound complication in the insertionsite of tendon to bone by a plantar knop we used a new method of fixation by an absorbable screw inserted dorsally. METHODS: we performed this operation on 15 patients in a 3 years period. All patients had drop foot deformitydue to irreversible lesions of the peroneal nerve. The inclusion criteria was the peroneal nerve palsy that wasnot improved after 18 months even by using nerve releasing or nerve repairing. All patients were evaluatedafter 6 months for ankle function and wound complications. RESULT: Of 15 patients one was excluded from study. At 6 month ten patients got excellent score (66%) and 4good score (26%) further ankle function. There was no wound complication at insertion site. CONCLUSION: This simple modification for insertion site fixation had good result in restoring ankle functionwhiles eliminated the possibility of plantar pressure sores caused by fixation knop.
