RESUMO

This experiment was conducted to examine the effect of 2 phosphorus (P) sources on broiler performance to day 14. The P bioavailability was estimated using bird performance and tibia ash measurements, whereas P digestibility, intestinal P transporter, kidney vitamin D-1α-hydroxylase, and vitamin D-24-hydroxylase mRNA abundances were also determined. Slope regression analysis was used to determine the bioavailability of dicalcium phosphate (Dical P) and nanocalcium phosphate (Nano P) with dietary available P (AvP) set to 0.20% P (control) using AvP from the major ingredients and Dical P. The experimental treatments were achieved by supplementation with either Dical P or Nano P to generate 0.24, 0.28, 0.32, and 0.36% AvP. A total of 648-day-old unsexed broiler chicks were divided into 72 birds per treatment (8 replicate cages of 9 birds). Slope regression analysis showed positive linear relationships between BW, feed intake (FI), tibia ash weight (TAW), and tibia ash percentage (TAP) with dietary Dical P and Nano P levels. Comparisons between regression slopes for Dical P and Nano P fed birds were not significantly different for BW, feed intake, tibia ash weight, and tibia ash percentage, indicating similar P bioavailability from Dical P and Nano P. There were interactions between P source and AvP for feed efficiency (FE) and apparent ileal P digestibility (AIPD). Dicalcium phosphate had greater FE than Nano P at 0.28% AvP and greater AIPD than Nano P at 0.24% AvP. The addition of AvP from Dical P and Nano P resulted in reduced sodium phosphate cotransporter mRNA abundance in the duodenum in a dose-dependent response. In the kidney, vitamin D-1α-hydroxylase mRNA abundance was greater at 0.36% Nano P compared with control, but there was no difference with Dical P. There was no difference in vitamin D-24-hydroxylase mRNA abundance between control and supplementation with Nano P or Dical P. In conclusion, Nano P and Dical P had the same bioavailability but had different effects on gene expression.

RESUMO

We investigate a nano-patterning process which creates reproducible periodic surface topological features that range in size from ∼100 µm to ∼20 µm. Specifically, we have fabricated multi-layered thin films consisting of germanium/silicon strata on a planar substrate, with each layer having nanometers thickness. The material processing exploits focused 244 nm ultra-violet laser light and an opto-mechanical setup typically applied to the inscription of fiber gratings, and is based upon the well-known material compaction interaction of ultra-violet light with germanium oxides. We show this process can be extended to create arrays of metal nano-antennas by adding a metal overlay to the thin film. This results in arrays with dimensions that span nanometer- to centimeter-length scales. Also, each nano-antenna consists of "nano-blocks." Experimental data are presented that show the UV irradiance dosage used to create these metal nanostructures on D-shaped optical fibers has a direct relationship to their transmission spectral characteristics as plasmonic devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Plant height and leaf angle are important determinants of yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Genes involved in regulating plant height and leaf angle were identified in previous studies; however, there are many remaining unknown factors that affect rice architecture. RESULTS: In this study, we characterized a dwarf mutant named ds1 with small grain size and decreased leaf angle, selected from an irradiated population of ssp. japonica variety Nanjing35. The ds1 mutant also showed abnormal floral organs. ds1 plants were insensitive to BL treatment and expression of genes related to BR signaling was changed. An F2 population from a cross between ds1 and indica cultivar 93-11 was used to fine map DS1 and to map-based clone the DS1 allele, which encoded an EMF1-like protein that acted as a transcriptional regulator. DS1 was constitutively expressed in various tissues, and especially highly expressed in young leaves, panicles and seeds. We showed that the DS1 protein interacted with auxin response factor 11 (OsARF11), a major transcriptional regulator of plant height and leaf angle, to co-regulate D61/OsBRI1 expression. These findings provide novel insights into understanding the molecular mechanisms by which DS1 integrates auxin and brassinosteroid signaling in rice. CONCLUSION: The DS1 gene encoded an EMF1-like protein in rice. The ds1 mutation altered the expression of genes related to BR signaling, and ds1 was insensitive to BL treatment. DS1 interacts with OsARF11 to co-regulate OsBRI1 expression.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the possibility of a universal cut off value between benign and malignant lymph nodes in patients with tumour by Z-Score transformation method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Diffusion weighted imaging, ADC measurements of malignant and benign lymph nodes of 6 studies (4 body parts), conducted for 5 times, in two institutions with variable technical details were analyzed in their original value as well as the standardized Z-Score value. The standardized Z-Score value was obtained by subtracting the population mean of the control group from an individual raw score and then dividing the difference by the population standard deviation of the control group. General cut off values were obtained by both Mega-analysis by receiver operator characteristic curve analysis, when data from the 6 studies were combined and Meta-analysis with weighting coefficients and cut off values of the six individual studies. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy with cut offs from individual studies, meta-analysis and mega-analysis were calculated. Kappa test was performed to assess the consistency of diagnostic test accuracy, between optimized cut offs of individual studies and the proposed universal cut offs obtained from meta-analysis and mega-analysis. RESULTS: The ADC values of benign and malignant lymph nodes are significantly different, but with large overlap across the studies. The overlap can be minimized by Z-Score transformation. The result of ROC analysis of the collective Z-Score transformed ADC values of 6 studies was superior to that of the collective original ADC values (sensitivity: 87.4% versus 67.2%, specificity: 90.5% versus 87.9%, accuracy: 89.6% versus 81.4%). The universal Z-Score cut off from Meta-analysis is also better than the original ADC cut off (sensitivity: 82.8% versus 76.3%, specificity 92.6% versus 62.9%, accuracy 89.6% versus 67.1%). Applied to the individual studies, the universal transformed Z-Score cut offs produced superior consistency with the individual optimal cut offs (individual and meta Z-Score: 0.7228-0.9793; individual and mega Z-Score: 0.7111-0.9169) compared with the universal original ADC cut offs (individual and meta ADC: 0.3030-1.0000; individual and mega ADC 0.3268-0.9618). CONCLUSION: Z-Score transformation could minimize inter-study variations due to heterogeneity of MR systems and sequence parameters, and provide a more consistent universal cut off value between benign and malignant nodes across studies.

RESUMO

We have investigated experimentally and numerically the temperature and refractive index (RI) sensitivity characteristics of excessively tilted fiber gratings (Ex-TFGs) in detail. Both results have shown that the temperature and RI sensitivities of Ex-TFGs are mode order dependent. For temperature sensitivity, the higher order cladding mode of Ex-TFG exhibited lower temperature sensitivity, quantitatively, the temperature sensitivities of TM cladding modes at the resonance wavelength around 1550nm are 9pm/°C, 6.8pm/°C, 5.6pm/°C and, 4pm/°C for cladding mode 28th, 31st, 35th, 40th, respectively, indicating the overall temperature sensitivity of Ex-TFGs were lower than that of normal FBGs. The SRI sensing results have shown that the RI sensitivity of Ex-TFG at the special index value could be improved by choosing the cladding mode with effective index close to the refractive index of the detecting medium. The SRI sensitivities at the effective mode index were 2250nm/RIU at 1.408, 864nm/RIU at 1.395, 1536nm/RIU at 1.380 and 1360nm/RIU at 1.355, for the cladding mode of 28th, 31st, 35th, 43rd, respectively. The experimental results have also shown the SRI sensitivity of Ex-TFG was increasing with increasing of the resonance wavelength.

RESUMO

Here we present a new generic opto-bio-sensing platform combining immobilised aptamers on an infrared plasmonic sensing device generated by nano-structured thin film that demonstrates amongst the highest index spectral sensitivities of any optical fibre sensor yielding on average 3.4 × 104 nm/RIU in the aqueous index regime (with a figure of merit of 330) This offers a single stage, solution phase, atto-molar detection capability, whilst delivering real-time data for kinetic studies in water-based chemistry. The sensing platform is based upon optical fibre and has the potential to be multiplexed and used in remote sensing applications. As an example of the highly versatile capabilities of aptamer based detection using our platform, purified thrombin is detected down to 50 attomolar concentration using a volume of 1mm3 of solution without the use of any form of enhancement technique. Moreover, the device can detect nanomolar levels of thrombin in a flow cell, in the presence of 4.5% w/v albumin solution. These results are important, covering all concentrations in the human thrombin generation curve, including the problematic initial phase. Finally, selectivity is confirmed using complementary and non-complementary DNA sequences that yield performances similar to those obtained with thrombin.

RESUMO

Measurements of spin excitations are essential for an understanding of spin-mediated pairing for superconductivity; and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) provides a considerable opportunity to probe high-energy spin excitations. However, whether RIXS correctly measures the collective spin excitations of doped superconducting cuprates remains under debate. Here we demonstrate distinct Raman- and fluorescence-like RIXS excitations of Bi1.5Pb0.6Sr1.54CaCu2O(8+δ). Combining photon-energy and momentum dependent RIXS measurements with theoretical calculations using exact diagonalization provides conclusive evidence that the Raman-like RIXS excitations correspond to collective spin excitations, which are magnons in the undoped Mott insulators and evolve into paramagnons in doped superconducting compounds. In contrast, the fluorescence-like shifts are due primarily to the continuum of particle-hole excitations in the charge channel. Our results show that under the proper experimental conditions RIXS indeed can be used to probe paramagnons in doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors.

RESUMO

KEY MESSAGE: A Brd2 allele suppresses heading date by altering the expression of heading date regulators such as OsMADS50 , and also negatively regulates chlorophyll biosynthesis. Heading date and plant height are important determinants of yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.). In this study, we characterized a late heading, dwarf mutant known as lhdd10 selected following ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS)-treatment of ssp. indica cultivar 93-11. lhdd10 showed late heading, dwarfness and slightly darker-green leaves than wild-type 93-11 under long-day and short-day conditions. We isolated lhdd10 by map-based cloning; it encoded a putative FAD-linked oxidoreductase protein (a brassinosteroid biosynthetic gene) that localized to the nucleus. LHDD10 was constitutively expressed in various tissues, but more so in shoot apices and panicles. Our data showed that lhdd10 influences heading date by controlling the expression of heading date regulators, such as OsMADS50 in both LD and SD conditions. lhdd10 also negatively regulated expression of chlorophyll biosynthetic genes to reduce the chlorophyll content. Our data indicated that BRs play important roles in regulating heading date and chlorophyll biosynthesis. This work provides material that will allow study of how BRs regulate heading date in rice.

RESUMO

A well-behaved spin-light emitting diode (LED) composed of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum disks (MQDs), ferromagnetic contact, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The degree of circular polarization of electroluminescence (EL) can reach up to a high value of 10.9% at room temperature in a low magnetic field of 0.35 T, which overcomes a very low degree of spin polarization in nitride semiconductors due to the weak spin-orbit interaction. Several underlying mechanisms play significant roles simultaneously in this newly designed device for the achievement of such a high performance. Most of all, the vacancy between nanodisks can be filled by half-metal nanoparticles with suitable energy band alignment, which enables selective transfer of spin polarized electrons and holes and leads to the enhanced output spin polarization of LED. Unlike previously reported mechanisms, this new process leads to a weak dependence of spin relaxation on temperature. Additionally, the internal strain in planar InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells can be relaxed in the nanodisk formation process, which leads to the disappearance of Rashba Hamiltonian and enhances the spin relaxation time. Our approach therefore opens up a new route for the further research and development of semiconductor spintronics.

RESUMO

We examined methods of controlling the pulse duration, spectral width and wavelength of the output from an all-fiber Yb laser mode-locked by carbon nanotubes. It is shown that a segment of polarization maintaining (PM) fiber inserted into a standard single mode fiber based laser cavity can function as a spectral selective filter. Adjustment of the length of the PM fiber from 1 to 2 m led to a corresponding variation in the pulse duration from 2 to 3.8 ps, the spectral bandwidth of the laser output changes from 0.15 to 1.26 nm. Laser output wavelength detuning within up to 5 nm was demonstrated with a fixed length of the PM fiber by adjustment of the polarization controller.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the roles of angiogenesis, thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) and transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) in invasive and noninvasive prolactinoma. METHODS: TSP-1 and TGF-ß1 protein were examined using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting in 81 prolactinomas. Angiogenesis was assessed by measuring microvessel density via CD34 immunostaining. RESULTS: Microvessel density was significantly higher in invasive prolactinomas than in noninvasive prolactinomas. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that significantly fewer invasive prolactinomas were positive for TSP-1 compared with noninvasive prolactinomas (17.9% versus 50.0%, respectively), and significantly higher numbers of invasive prolactinomas were positive for TGF-ß1 compared with noninvasive prolactinomas (82.1% versus 42.9%, respectively). Microvessel density was significantly lower in TSP-1-positive prolactinomas than in TSP-1-negative prolactinomas, and significantly higher in TGF-ß1-positive prolactinomas than in TGF-ß1-negative prolactinomas. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest a close relationship between angiogenesis and tumour invasiveness in prolactinoma. TSP-1 and TGF-ß1 may play important roles in the progression of prolactinoma, by affecting angiogenesis.

RESUMO

We report an all-fiber mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) employing carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer composite film. By using only standard telecom grade components, without any complex polarization control elements in the laser cavity, we have demonstrated polarization locked vector solitons generation with duration of ~583 fs, average power of ~3 mW (pulse energy of 118 pJ) at the repetition rate of ~25.7 MHz.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the stroke risk in patients with head and neck cancers (HNCs) using population-based data. METHODS: From claims collected in the Taiwan National Health Insurance database, we identified 13,390 HNC patients with diagnosis made in 2000-2002. A reference cohort of 53,517 non-cancer individuals matched for age, gender, and stroke risk factors was used for assessing stroke risk in follow-up to 2008. RESULTS: The overall stroke incidence was 1.44-fold higher in the HNC than in the reference cohort (11.4 vs 7.9 per 1000 person-years). Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were 1.54 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.40-1.68) for ischaemic stroke and 1.36 (95% CI: 1.09-1.69) for haemorrhagic stroke. The cancer-to-reference stroke incidence rate ratio was age dependent and the highest in the age group younger than 40 years (5.45, 95% CI: 3.78-7.87) and decreased with aging. Comparing different therapeutic modalities, HNC patients receiving both radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy (CT) had the highest stroke risk (HR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.22-1.74), followed in sequence by those who had CT alone, RT alone, and without therapy. CONCLUSION: Patients with HNC are at increased risk of developing stroke, especially in the young age group and in those who received both RT and CT.

RESUMO

Despite their importance to oral health, the mechanisms of minor salivary gland (SG) development are largely unexplored. Here we present in vivo and in vitro analyses of developing minor SGs in wild type and mutant mice. Eda, Shh and Fgf signalling pathway genes are expressed in these glands from an early stage of development. Developing minor SGs are absent in Eda pathway mutant embryos, and these mice exhibit a dysplastic circumvallate papilla with disrupted Shh expression. Supplementation of Eda pathway mutant minor SG explants with recombinant EDA rescues minor SG induction. Supplementation with Fgf8 or Shh, previously reported targets of Eda signalling, leads to induction of gland like structures in a few cases, but these fail to develop into minor SGs.

RESUMO

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by defective ectodermal organ development. This includes the salivary glands (SGs), which have an important role in lubricating the oral cavity. In humans and mice, HED is caused by mutations in Ectodysplasin A (Eda) pathway genes. Various phenotypes of the mutant mouse Eda(Ta/Ta), which lacks the ligand Eda, can be rescued by maternal injection or in vitro culture supplementation with recombinant EDA. However, the response of the SGs to this treatment has not been investigated. Here, we show that the submandibular glands (SMGs) of Eda(Ta/Ta) mice exhibit impaired branching morphogenesis, and that supplementation of Eda(Ta/Ta) SMG explants with recombinant EDA rescues the defect. Supplementation of Edar(dlJ/dlJ) SMGs with recombinant Sonic hedgehog (Shh) also rescues the defect, whereas treatment with recombinant Fgf8 does not. This work is the first to test the ability of putative Eda target molecules to rescue Eda pathway mutant SMGs.

RESUMO

Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) diagnosed with resistant phenotypes, and those who relapse, have a dismal prognosis for cure. The antifolate methotrexate (MTX), a universal component of ALL therapies, is metabolized by folylpoly-gamma-glutamate synthetase (FPGS) into long-chain polyglutamates (MTX-PG(3-7)), resulting in enhanced cytotoxicity from prolonged inhibition of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and thymidylate synthetase (TS). Using DNaseI assays, we identified a hypersensitive site upstream from exon-1, suggesting chromatin remodeling could alter FPGS expression. We demonstrated that histone deacetylase-1 (HDAC1) is recruited by NFY and Sp1 transcription factors to the FPGS promoter in ALL cell lines. We examined the effect of histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) sodium butyrate and suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) on the expression of FPGS and other folate-related genes. HDACIs increased FPGS mRNA expression by 2- to 5-fold, whereas DHFR and TS mRNA expression was decreased. Combination treatment with MTX plus SAHA significantly increased cytotoxicity and apoptosis in B- and T-ALL cell lines as compared with each drug alone (CI

RESUMO

We present a protocol for simultaneous structural characterization of a confined fluid and the confining substrate, along with the extraction of site-site pair correlation functions of the liquid of interest. This is based on neutron diffraction experiments, exploiting where feasible the isotopic substitution technique, analyzed through numerical coarse graining calculations and atomistic simulations. All of the subtleties of the experimental procedure, the needed ancillary measurements, and the recipe for tailoring the numerical codes to the real experiment and sample are described in the case of water confined in MCM41-S-15. In particular the excluded volume effects and the relevance of liquid-substrate cross-correlation terms in the neutron cross section are quantitatively discussed. The results obtained for the microscopic structure of water evidence a non-homogeneous distribution of molecules within the pore, with the presence of water-substrate hydrogen bonds, and a strong distortion of the water-water radial distribution functions with respect to those of bulk water extending at least up to three hydration layers.

RESUMO

A simple and general approach has been developed for the enhancement of random lasing based on the composite consisting of nanospheres and nanorods array. Due to the inherent nature of high refractive index, the selected nanorods act efficiently as scattering feedback centers, which can promote the formation of closed loop paths of the emission arising from nanospheres. To illustrate our working principle, the composite consisting of Tb(OH)(3)/SiO(2) nanospheres and ZnO nanorods was chosen as an example. Quite interestingly, it is found that the random lasing behavior can be easily achieved for the composite system, while it is absent in pure Tb(OH)(3)/SiO(2) nanospheres. The strategy demonstrated here should be very useful for the future development of coherent light emission sources and many other optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

We demonstrate surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fiber devices based upon ultraviolet inscription of a grating-type structure into both single-layered and multilayered thin films deposited on the flat side of a lapped D-shaped fiber. The single-layered devices were fabricated from germanium, while the multilayered ones comprised layers of germanium, silica, and silver. Some of the devices operated in air with high coupling efficiency in excess of 40 dB and an estimated index sensitivity of Delta lambda/Delta n=90 nm from 1 to 1.15 index range, while others provided an index sensitivity of Delta lambda/Delta n=6790 nm for refractive indices from 1.33 to 1.37.

RESUMO

Photonic crystals of Tb(OH)(3)/SiO(2) core/shell nanospheres with different periodicities were used as a resonant cavity to explore laser action. By changing the particle size, the optical stop band of the photonic crystals can be tuned to coincide with the multiple emission bands of terbium ions. An overlap of the stop band on the multiple emissions of the active materials embedded inside the photonic crystals offered a good chance for resonance. Lasing emissions arising from terbium ions occurred near the band edge of the PCs were demonstrated.
