RESUMO
This cross-sectional study employs structural equation modelling (sEM) to explore both direct and indirect effects of parental level of education and child individual factors on the length-for-age outcomes in children aged 6-24 months assisted by the Bolsa Família Program in the State of Alagoas. A total of 1448 children were analysed by the sEM technique. A negative standardised direct effect (sDE) of the children's younger age (sDE: -0·06; P = 0·017), the use of bottle feeding (sDE: -0·11; P < 0·001) and lack of a minimum acceptable diet (sDE: -0·09; P < 0·001) on the length-for-age indicator was found. Being female (SDE: 0·08; P = 0·001), a higher birth weight (SDE: 0·33; P < 0·001), being ever breastfed (sdE: 0·07; P = 0·004) and a higher level of parental education (SDE: 0·09; P < 0·001) showed a positive SDE effect on the child's length-for-age. The model also demonstrated a negative standardised indirect effect (SIE) of the sweet beverage consumption (SIE: -0·08; P = 0·003) and a positive effect of being ever breastfed (SIE: 0·06; P = 0·017) on the child's length-for-age through parental level of education as a mediator. This research underscores the crucial role of proper feeding practices and provides valuable insights for the development of targeted interventions, policies and programmes to improve nutritional well-being and promote adequate linear growth and development among young children facing similar challenges.

Red pitaya (Hylocereus costaricensis) is a promising species, with high cultivation potential due to the organoleptic and functional qualities of its fruits. However, irrigation water salinity can affect the crop yield. Therefore, materials rich in organic substances can minimize the damage caused by excess salts in soil and/or water. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of organic matter sources as attenuators of salt stress on the production and biochemical responses of red pitaya seedlings. A completely randomized design in 4 × 5 factorial scheme, with five sources of organic matter (humus, sheep manure, biofertilizer, organic compost and sand + soil) and four salinities (0.6, 2.6, 4.6 and 6.6 dS m-1) with four replicates and two plants per plot was used. The shoot length, root length, cladode diameter, number of cladodes, number of sprotus, root volume, shoot dry mass, root dry mass and total dry mass, root and shoot dry mass ratio, chlorophyll a, b and total, amino acids and soluble sugars were evaluated at 120 days after the treatments began to be applied. Red pitaya is moderately tolerant to salinity (ECw from 4.0 to 6.0 dS m-1). Organic compost and sheep manure attenuate the harmful effects of salinity on red pitaya seedlings. Under salt stress conditions, red pitaya plants increase their levels of proline, amino acids and total sugars.
A pitaia vermelha é moderadamente tolerante a salinidade. O composto orgânico e estrume ovino atenuam os efeitos nocivos da salinidade nas mudas de pitaia vermelha. Sob condições de estresse salino, as plantas aumentam os níveis de aminoácidos e açúcares totais.

Capsiate (CAP) is a nonpungent capsaicin analog (Capsicum annuum L. extract) that has been studied as a potential antiobesity agent. However, the interaction between chronic CAP supplementation and resistance training is not clear. The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in adipose tissue-derived hormones, body composition, appetite, and muscle strength after 10 weeks of resistance training, combined with chronic CAP supplementation in healthy untrained men. We hypothesized that CAP could induce higher benefits when combined with resistance training after 10 weeks of intervention compared to resistance training alone. Twenty-four young men (age, 22.0 ± 2.9) were randomized to either capsiate supplementation (CAP = 12 mg/day) or placebo (PL), and both groups were assigned to resistance training. Body composition, leptin and adiponectin concentrations, subjective ratings of appetite, energy intake, and exercise performance were assessed at before and after 10 weeks of progressive resistance training. There was a significant increase in body mass (P < .001), fat-free mass (CAP: 58.0 ± 7.1 vs. post, 59.7 ± 7.1 kg; PL: pre, 58.4 ± 7.3 vs. post, 59.8 ± 7.1 kg; P < .001), resting metabolic rate (CAP: pre, 1782.9 ± 160.6 vs. post, 1796.3 ± 162.0 kcal; PL: pre, 1733.0 ± 148.9 vs. post, 1750.5 ± 149.8 kcal; P < .001), maximal strength at 45 leg press (P < .001) and bench press (P < .001) in both groups, but no significant (P > .05) supplementation by training period interaction nor fat mass was observed. For subjective ratings of appetite, energy intake, leptin, and adiponectin, no significant effect of supplementation by training period interaction was observed (P > .05). In conclusion, 10 weeks of resistance training increased total body weight, muscle mass, and maximum strength in healthy untrained men; however, CAP supplementation (12 mg, 7 days per week) failed to change adipose tissue-derived hormones, appetite, body composition and muscle strength in this population. Registered under Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (RBR-8cz9kfq).

Gut microbiota imbalance is associated with the occurrence of metabolic diseases such as obesity. Thus, its modulation is a promising strategy to restore gut microbiota and improve intestinal health in the obese. This paper examines the role of probiotics, antimicrobials, and diet in modulating gut microbiota and improving intestinal health. Accordingly, obesity was induced in C57BL/6J mice, after which they were redistributed and fed with an obesogenic diet (intervention A) or standard AIN-93 diet (intervention B). Concomitantly, all the groups underwent a treatment phase with Lactobacillus gasseri LG-G12, ceftriaxone, or ceftriaxone followed by L. gasseri LG-G12. At the end of the experimental period, the following analysis was conducted: metataxonomic analysis, functional profiling of gut microbiota, intestinal permeability, and caecal concentration of short-chain fatty acids. High-fat diet impaired bacterial diversity/richness, which was counteracted in association with L. gasseri LG-G12 and the AIN-93 diet. Additionally, SCFA-producing bacteria were negatively correlated with high intestinal permeability parameters, which was further confirmed via functional profile prediction of the gut microbiota. A novel perspective on anti-obesity probiotics is presented by these findings based on the improvement of intestinal health irrespective of undergoing antimicrobial therapy or not.
RESUMO
Marginal bone loss around immediately placed implants may compromise esthetic outcomes in the anterior maxilla. The relatively recent socket-shield technique of partial extraction therapy has been described as being useful to maintain the structure of peri-implant tissues. The present technique report introduced a digital workflow to perform image-guided implant placement after partial extraction therapy. In this technique, digital 3-dimensional images are used to plan and orient the flapless surgical procedure and to digitally design a custom abutment based on the natural emergence profile as segmented from the tooth to be extracted.

Brain functions are influenced by the presence, activity, and metabolism of the gut microbiota through the gut-microbiota-brain (GMB) axis. The consumption of a fiber-rich diet increases the content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) from bacterial fermentation in the colon. Among SCFAs, butyrate stands out because of its wide array of biological functions, such as ability to influence brain functions. Pharmacologically, sodium butyrate (NaB) regulates gene expression in the brain, where it has several beneficial effects ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to behavioral disorders through inhibitors of histone deacetylases (HDACis). In this context, we review the mechanisms of action of the two types of butyrate on brain functions, with an emphasis on the epigenetic approach. Both types of butyrate are potentially interesting for the prevention and adjuvant therapy of neurological and psychological disorders due to their neuroprotective functions. However, further studies are needed to investigate the possible neuroepigenetic effects of butyrate derived from bacterial fermentation.
RESUMO
Cefepime (CEF) is a cephalosporin and can be administered in secondary peritonitis together with metronidazole to treat sepsis. This study aimed to develop and validate an LC-ESI-QTOF-MS method for the quantification of cefepime in the plasma and peritoneal microdialysate of healthy Wistar rats. Chromatographic separation was performed using a CLC-ODS C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm), a C18 pre-column (4 mm, 5 µm) and isocratic elution. Gallic acid was used as the internal standard. The mobile phase consisted of (A) ultrapure water (pH adjusted to 3.5) and (B) acetonitrile (80:20, v/v) at 0.8 ml/min. Quantification was performed using a mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization in positive mode to monitor ions with m/z 481.1322 (CEF) and m/z 171.0288 (IS). The method was validated for selectivity, precision, accuracy, linearity, stability, lower limit of quantification, carryover, recovery and matrix effect. Calibration was done in the ranges 1-40 and 1-100 µg/ml for the peritoneal microdialysate and plasma, respectively. Plasma extraction recovery ranged from 93.9 to 99.9%. The technique was validated and successfully applied in a pilot pharmacokinetic study for estimating the free concentration of CEF in the peritoneal microdialysate of rats for the first time.

This article presents a rapid technique for the accurate transfer of implant positions immediately after image-guided surgery to enable the immediate installation of a definitive complete-arch implant-supported prosthesis with an implant biological width of 3 mm within 3 appointments. A sleeveless copy of the implant surgical guide is magnetically connected to a reference guide to ensure the accurate capture of cylindrical titanium transfer abutments. In the laboratory, the sleeveless guide with the splinted transfer abutments attached is used to generate a definitive cast to be scanned with a desktop scanner. The resulting digital definitive cast is then combined with the original meshes of the prosthetically driven virtual treatment plan to enable a definitive computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured prosthesis to be fabricated and installed with passive fit.
RESUMO
The objectives of this study were to test an artificial substrate sampler method for aquaculture ponds and assess the water quality based on the benthic macroinvertebrate community living in fishpond sediment at four farms with tilapia production in the Baixa Mogiana region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Benthic macroinvertebrates were monitored every 15 days for 3 months. Approximately 500,000 organisms distributed in 47 taxa were collected. Chironomidae, Glossiphonidae, Hirudinidae, Libelullidae, Oligochaeta, and Polycentropodidae were present in all collected samples, with the dominance of Chironomidae in the benthic community. Polycentropodidae, a sensitive family to organic pollution, had a greater abundance in fish farms with better environmental conditions. Significant differences in dissolved oxygen and pH were observed among fishponds at different fish farms. Biomonitoring with artificial substrate is a simple and low-cost alternative to monitoring water quality of tilapia culture in fishponds. The artificial substrate sampling method was effective, but the evaluation of more critical conditions of water quality would improve the method and enhance the knowledge of taxa and ecology of macrobenthic organisms in fishponds.

The present study aims to compare the effectiveness of surgical and medical therapy in reducing the risk of cancer in Barrett's esophagus in a long-term evaluation. A prospective cohort was designed that compared Barrett's esophagus patients submitted to medical treatment with omeprazole or laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. The groups were compared using propensity score matching paired by Barrett's esophagus length. A total of 398 patients met inclusion criteria. There were 207 patients in the omeprazole group (Group A) and 191 in the total fundoplication group (Group B). After applying the propensity score matching paired by Barrett's esophagus length, the groups were 180 (Group A) and 190 (Group B). Median follow-up was 80 months. Group B was significantly superior for controlling GERD symptoms. Group B was more efficient than Group A in promoting Barrett's esophagus regression or blocking its progression. Group B was more efficient than Group A in preventing the development of dysplasia and cancer. Logistic regression was performed for the outcomes of adenocarcinoma and dysplasia. Age and body mass index were used as covariates in the logistic regression models. Even after regression analysis, Group B was still superior to Group A to prevent esophageal adenocarcinoma or dysplasia transformation (odds ratio [OR]: 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.27-0.97, for adenocarcinoma or any dysplasia; and OR: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.08-0.81, for adenocarcinoma or high-grade dysplasia). Surgical treatment is superior to medical management, allowing for better symptom control, less need for reflux medication use, higher regression rate of the columnar epithelium and intestinal metaplasia, and lower risk for progression to dysplasia and cancer.

The selective synthesis of 4-alkynyloxazolones and their further applications as substrates to electrophile-promoted nucleophilic cyclization have been developed. The reaction of ynamides with terminal alkynes proceeded smoothly to give 4-alkynyloxazolones in the presence of a catalytic amount of palladium(II) acetate. The products were obtained with the sequential formation of new C-C and C-O bonds via a cascade procedure. The first step involved a carbon-oxygen bond formation, via a 5-endo-dig closure, which was confirmed by X-ray analyses of the crystalline sample. Subsequently, the reaction of 4-alkynyloxazolones with an electrophilic selenium source gave 3-phenylselanyl benzofuran derivatives via an electrophile-promoted nucleophilic cyclization.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is still a worldwide public health problem, requiring the development of adjuvant therapies to combat it. In this context, modulation of the intestinal microbiota seems prominent, given that the composition of the intestinal microbiota contributes to the outcome of this disease. The aim of this work is to investigate the treatment with an antimicrobial and/or a potential probiotic against overweight. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a 12-week overweight induction protocol. After that, 4-week treatment was started, with mice divided into four groups: control, treated with distilled water; potential probiotic, with Lactobacillus gasseri LG-G12; antimicrobial, with ceftriaxone; and antimicrobial + potential probiotic with ceftriaxone in the first 2 weeks and L. gasseri LG-G12 in the subsequent weeks. RESULTS: The treatment with ceftriaxone in isolated form or in combination with the potential probiotic provided a reduction in body fat. However, such effect is supposed to be a consequence of the negative action of ceftriaxone on the intestinal microbiota composition, and this intestinal dysbiosis may have contributed to the destruction of the intestinal villi structure, which led to a reduction in the absorptive surface. Also, the effects of L. gasseri LG-G12 apparently have been masked by the consumption of the high-fat diet. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the use of a ceftriaxone in the adjuvant treatment of overweight is not recommended due to the potential risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease.

Nicotine is an endocrine disruptor and imprinting factor during breastfeeding that can cause food intake imbalance in the adulthood. As nicotine affects the intestinal microbiota, altering the composition of the bacterial communities and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) synthesis in a sex-dependent manner, we hypothesized that nicotine could program the gut-brain axis, consequently modifying the eating pattern of adult male and female rats in a model of maternal nicotine exposure (MNE) during breastfeeding. Lactating Wistar rat dams received minipumps that release 6 mg/kg/day of nicotine (MNE group) or saline for 14 days. The progeny received standard diet from weaning until euthanasia (26 weeks of age). We measured: in vivo electrical activity of the vagus nerve; c-Fos expression in the nucleus tractus solitarius, gastrointestinal peptides receptors, intestinal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), SCFAs and microbiota. MNE females showed hyperphagia despite normal adiposity, while MNE males had unchanged food intake, despite obesity. Adult MNE offspring showed decreased Bacteroidetes and increased Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. MNE females had lower fecal acetate while MNE males showed higher vagus nerve activity. In summary nicotine exposure through the milk induces long-term intestinal dysbiosis, which may affect eating patterns of adult offspring in a sex-dependent manner.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to verify the association between socio-economic and demographic characteristics and dietary patterns (DP) of children assisted by the Conditional Cash Transfer Program, Bolsa Família Program (BFP). DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. DP were defined using a principal component analysis. The association of the predictive variables and DP was modelled using multilevel linear regression analysis. SETTING: This study was conducted in six municipalities from the State of Alagoas, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: The participants were children aged 6-24 months who were assisted by the BFP. RESULTS: A total of 1604 children were evaluated. Four DP were identified (DP1, DP2, DP3 and DP4). DP1 is composed of traditional Brazilian food. DP2 is formed mostly from ultra-processed foods (UPF). DP3 consists of milk (non-breast) with added sugar, while DP4 consists of fresh and minimally processed foods. Caregivers with higher age and education (ß = -0·008; (95 % CI -0·017, -0·000); ß = -0·037; (95 % CI -0·056, -0·018), respectively) were negatively associated with DP2. We observed a negative association between households with food insecurity (ß = -0·204; (95 % CI -0·331, -0·078)) and DP4 and a positive association between caregivers with higher age and education (ß = 0·011; (95 % CI (0·003; 0·019); ß = 0·043; (95 % CI 0·025, 0·061), respectively) and DP4. CONCLUSION: This study identified the association between socio-economic inequities and DP early in life, with an early introduction of UPF, in children assisted by BFP in the State of Alagoas.

BACKGROUND: Acute capsaicinoid and capsinoid supplementation has endurance and resistance exercise benefits; however, if these short-term performance benefits translate into chronic benefits when combined with resistance training is currently unknown. This study investigated changes of chronic Capsiate supplementation on muscular adaptations, inflammatory response and performance in untrained men. METHODS: Twenty untrained men were randomized to ingest 12 mg Capsiate (CAP) or placebo in a parallel, double-blind design. Body composition and performance were measured at pre-training and after 6 weeks of resistance training. An acute resistance exercise session test was performed pre and post-intervention. Blood samples were collected at rest and post-resistance exercise to analyze Tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-), Soluble TNF- receptor (sTNF-r), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10). RESULTS: Exercise and CAP supplementation increased fat-free mass in comparison to baseline by 1.5 kg (P < 0.001), however, the majority of the increase (1.0 kg) resulted from an increase in total body water. The CAP change scores for fat-free mass were significantly greater in comparison to the placebo (CAP ∆%= 2.1 ± 1.8 %, PLA ∆%= 0.7 ± 1.3 %, P = 0.043) and there was a significant difference between groups in the bench press exercise (P = 0.034) with greater upper body strength change score for CAP (∆%= 13.4 ± 9.1 %) compared to placebo (∆%= 5.8 ± 5.2 %), P = 0.041. CAP had no effect on lower body strength and no supplementation interactions were observed for all cytokines in response to acute resistance exercise (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Chronic Capsiate supplementation combined with resistance training during short period (6 weeks) increased fat-free mass and upper body strength but not inflammatory response and performance in young untrained men.

In the present report, we describe targeted next-generation sequencing of the EDA gene of a male poodle with a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. The result was compared with the reference sequence and with the result of the sequencing of a normal dog's EDA gene. No point variant, small deletion or insertion were found in the exons and splice sites, but a transition and a transversion were found in the intron 6' and 3' UTR, respectively. The cause of the dysplasia of the affected dog in this study is neither a point variant nor a small deletion or insertion in the exons and splice sites of the EDA gene. Therefore, patients with phenotype of XLHED may have other types of variants in the EDA gene or variants in other genes of the EDA signalling pathway.
