Changes in Ca2(+)-ATPase activity were studied in leucocytic fraction of patients with varying forms of acute leukemia at different stages of the disease. It has been shown that Ca ion concentration increase in the medium of leukemic cell incubation leads to a growth of Ca2(+)-ATPase activity in them, the level of which correlates with the form of acute leukemia, the stage and severity of the clinical course of the disease.

Changes of sodium transport in tumor cells and their normal analogs were studied. For the first time we used a direct method of investigation with sodium-selective electrodes which permitted the study of ion transport in dynamics. As a result of investigation of sodium transport on malignant transplanted cultures of fibroblasts (7L strain) and on their normal prototypes--embryonic fibroblasts of hamsters, and also on the cells of Ehrlich ascite tumor--it was shown that when transferred the tumor cells in 15% hypertonic solution significant active transport of ions from the cells into the external medium was recorded. This phenomenon was not found in the normal cells. The experiments showed that in the process of malignancy significant changes began in the cellular membranes connected with the disturbance of activation of some enzymes, particularly Na,K-ATPase.

The effect of a local X-irradiation on the transmembrane transfer of Na ions and activity of Na-K ATPase in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells has been investigated. Irradiation with doses of 0.05 and 0.15 C/kg are shown to change natrium ion transport. This effect is absent at a dose of 0.08 C/kg. A change in the rate of active transport correlates to some extent with the disturbance in Na-K ATPase occurring at the same radiation doses.

A study was made of the effect of X-radiation on sodium and water transport within a section of rabbit small intestine. The effects induced by radiation doses of 0.21 and 0.39 C/kg were compared. The authors discuss the possibility of modification of the radiation lesions by the administration of cystamine prior to irradiation.
