BACKGROUND: CCHFV is well recognized as a major public health threat and its prevalence and epidemiological distribution in Pakistan and specifically in KP province is not well documented. METHODS: We used a gold-standard PCR-based diagnostic assay for confirmation of CCHFV among suspected patients. A total of 150 patients were enrolled from June 2022 to September 2022 and their blood samples were collected for PCR confirmation. RESULTS: The overall positivity rate for CCHFV was 26.67 %, with the virus mostly prevalent in the middle-aged group (21-40 years). In the July of 2022, a significant spike in the prevalence of CCHFV was observed in provincial capital Peshawar with the highest burden (31.57 %). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate the necessity of strengthening CCHFV monitoring programs and intensifying efforts to identify hotspot regions for effective surveillance and control of CCHFV. The months before the Eid-ul-Adha are crucial in the context of CCHFV control.

BACKGROUND: Low selenium concentrations are associated with worse outcomes in heart failure (HF). However, the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Therefore, we aimed to contrast serum selenium concentrations to blood biomarker and transcriptomic profiles in patients with HF. METHODS: Circulating biomarkers, whole blood transcriptomics and serum selenium measurements in a cohort of 2328 patients with HF were utilized. Penalized linear regression and gene expression analysis were used to assess biomarker and transcriptomics profiles, respectively. As a proof-of-principle, potential causal effects of selenium on excreted cytokines concentrations were investigated using human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). RESULTS: Mean selenium levels were 60.6 µg/L in Q1 and 122.0 µg/L in Q4. From 356 biomarkers and 20 clinical features, the penalized linear regression model yielded 44 variables with <5 % marginal false discovery rate as predictors of serum selenium. Biomarkers associated positively with selenium concentrations included: epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), IFN-gamma-R1, CD4, GDF15, and IL10. Biomarkers associated negatively with selenium concentrations included: PCSK9, TNFSF13, FGF21 and PAI. Additionally, 148 RNA transcripts were found differentially expressed between high and low selenium status (Padj.<0.05; log-fold-change<|0.25|). Enrichment analyses of the selected biomarkers and RNA transcripts identified similar enriched processes, including regulation processes of leukocyte differentiation and activation, as well as cytokines production. The mRNA expression of two selenoproteins (MSRB1 and GPX4) were strongly correlated with serum selenium, while GPX4, SELENOK, and SELENOS were associated with prognosis. In the in-vitro setting, PBMCs supplemented with selenium showed significantly lower abundance of several (pro-)inflammatory cytokines. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that immunoregulation is an important mechanism through which selenium might have beneficial roles in HF. The beneficial effects of higher serum selenium concentrations are likely because of global immunomodulatory effects on the abundance of cytokines. MSRB1 and GPX4 are potential modulators of and should be pursued in future research.

RESUMO

The immune system is intimately involved in the pathophysiology of heart failure. However, it is currently underused as a therapeutic target in the clinical setting. Moreover, the development of novel immunomodulatory therapies and their investigation for the treatment of patients with heart failure are hampered by the fact that currently used, evidence-based treatments for heart failure exert multiple immunomodulatory effects. In this Review, we discuss current knowledge on how evidence-based treatments for heart failure affect the immune system in addition to their primary mechanism of action, both to inform practising physicians about these pleiotropic actions and to create a framework for the development and application of future immunomodulatory therapies. We also delineate which subpopulations of patients with heart failure might benefit from immunomodulatory treatments. Furthermore, we summarize completed and ongoing clinical trials that assess immunomodulatory treatments in heart failure and present several therapeutic targets that could be investigated in the future. Lastly, we provide future directions to leverage the immunomodulatory potential of existing treatments and to foster the investigation of novel immunomodulatory therapeutics.

AIM: Malnutrition has been linked to cardiovascular diseases. Both selenium and iron deficiency have been associated with worse prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). Yet, little is known about the role of micronutrients in the development of atrial fibrillation (AFib). In this study, we aimed to elucidate the association of micronutrient deficiencies with new-onset AFib. METHODS: Selenium, magnesium, and iron parameters were measured in a well-characterized prospective cohort study (N = 5452). Selenium deficiency was defined as serum selenium < 70 µg/L, iron deficiency as serum ferritin < 30 µg/L, and magnesium deficiency as plasma magnesium < 0.85 mmol/L. New-onset AFib was the primary outcome. Additionally, we tested for previously reported effect-modifiers where applicable. RESULTS: Selenium, iron, and magnesium deficiency was observed in 1155 (21.2%), 797 (14.6%), and 3600 (66.0%) participants, respectively. During a mean follow-up of 6.2 years, 136 (2.5%) participants developed new-onset AFib. Smoking status significantly interacted with selenium deficiency on outcome (p = 0.079). After multivariable adjustment for components of the CHARGE-AF model, selenium deficiency was associated with new-onset AFib in non-smokers (HR 1.69, 95% CI 1.09-2.64, p = 0.020), but not in smokers (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.29-2.08, p = 0.619). Magnesium deficiency (HR 1.40, 95% CI 0.93-2.10, p = 0.110) and iron deficiency (HR 0.62, 95% CI 0.25-1.54, p = 0.307) were not significantly associated with new-onset AFib. CONCLUSION: Selenium deficiency was associated with new-onset AFib in non-smoking participants. Interventional studies that investigate the effects of optimizing micronutrients status in a population at risk are needed to assess causality, especially in those with selenium deficiency. Micronutrients deficiencies (selenium, iron, and magnesium) have been associated with cardiovascular diseases and mitochondrial dysfunction in human cardiomyocytes. However, it is not known whether these deficiencies are associated with atrial fibrillation. To investigate this question, we measured all three micronutrients in 5452 apparently healthy individuals. After a mean follow-up of 6.2 years, there were 136 participants who developed atrial fibrillation. Participants with selenium deficiency had a significant increased risk to develop atrial fibrillation, as did the participants with two or more deficiencies.

The significance of nanomaterials in biomedicines served as the inspiration for the design of this study. In this particular investigation, we carried out the biosynthesis of calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaONPs) by employing a green-chemistry strategy and making use of an extract of Ficus carica (an edible fruit) as a capping and reducing agent. There is a dire need for new antimicrobial agents due to the alarming rise in antibiotic resistance. Nanoparticles' diverse antibacterial properties suggest that they might be standard alternatives to antimicrobial drugs in the future. We describe herein the use of a Ficus carica extract as a capping and reducing agent in the phyto-mediated synthesis of CaONPs for the evaluation of their antimicrobial properties. The phyto-mediated synthesis of NPs is considered a reliable approach due to its high yield, stability, non-toxicity, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness. The CaONPs were physiochemically characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning-electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The biological synthesis of the calcium oxide nanoparticles revealed a characteristic surface plasmon resonance peak (SPR) at 360 nm in UV-Vis spectroscopy, which clearly revealed the successful reduction of the Ca2+ ions to Ca0 nanoparticles. The characteristic FTIR peak seen at 767 cm-1 corresponded to Ca-O bond stretching and, thus, confirmed the biosynthesis of the CaONPs, while the scanning-electron micrographs revealed near-CaO aggregates with an average diameter of 84.87 ± 2.0 nm. The antibacterial and anti-biofilm analysis of the CaONPs showed inhibition of bacteria in the following order: P. aeruginosa (28 ± 1.0) > S. aureus (23 ± 0.3) > K. pneumoniae (18 ± 0.9) > P. vulgaris (13 ± 1.6) > E. coli (11 ± 0.5) mm. The CaONPs were shown to considerably inhibit biofilm formation, providing strong evidence for their major antibacterial activity. It is concluded that this straightforward environmentally friendly method is capable of synthesizing stable and effective CaONPs. The therapeutic value of CaONPs is indicated by their potential as a antibacterial and antibiofilm agents in future medications.

AIMS: The importance of autoantibodies (AABs) against adrenergic/muscarinic receptors in heart failure (HF) is not well-understood. We investigated the prevalence and clinical/prognostic associations of four AABs recognizing the M2-muscarinic receptor or the ß1-, ß2-, or ß3-adrenergic receptor in a large and well-characterized cohort of patients with HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Serum samples from 2256 patients with HF from the BIOSTAT-CHF cohort and 299 healthy controls were analysed using newly established chemiluminescence immunoassays. The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality and HF rehospitalization at 2-year follow-up, and each outcome was also separately investigated. Collectively, 382 (16.9%) patients and 37 (12.4%) controls were seropositive for ≥1 AAB (P = 0.045). Seropositivity occurred more frequently only for anti-M2 AABs (P = 0.025). Amongst patients with HF, seropositivity was associated with the presence of comorbidities (renal disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, and atrial fibrillation) and with medication use. Only anti-ß1 AAB seropositivity was associated with the primary outcome [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval): 1.37 (1.04-1.81), P = 0.024] and HF rehospitalization [1.57 (1.13-2.19), P = 0.010] in univariable analyses but remained associated only with HF rehospitalization after multivariable adjustment for the BIOSTAT-CHF risk model [1.47 (1.05-2.07), P = 0.030]. Principal component analyses showed considerable overlap in B-lymphocyte activity between seropositive and seronegative patients, based on 31 circulating biomarkers related to B-lymphocyte function. CONCLUSIONS: AAB seropositivity was not strongly associated with adverse outcomes in HF and was mostly related to the presence of comorbidities and medication use. Only anti-ß1 AABs were independently associated with HF rehospitalization. The exact clinical value of AABs remains to be elucidated.

BACKGROUND: Booster vaccine doses against SARS-CoV-2 have been advocated to address evidence of waning immunity, breakthrough infection, and the emergence of immune-evasive variants. A heterologous prime-boost vaccine strategy may offer advantages over a homologous approach, but the safety and efficacy of this approach with the mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 (BNT: Pfizer) and inactivated BBIBP-CorV (BBIBT: Sinopharm) vaccines have not been studied. METHODS: We conducted a non-randomized, non-blinded phase II observational community trial acrossBahrain, investigating the reactogenic and immunogenic responseof participants who had previously received two doses of BBIBP, followed by a third booster dose of either BBIBP (homologous booster) or BNT (heterologous booster). Immunogenicity through serological statuswas determined at baseline and on the following 8thweek. Reactogenicity data (safety and adverse events) were collected throughout study period, in addition to participant-led electronic journaling. RESULTS: 305 participants (152 BBIBP and 153 BNT booster) were enrolled in the study,with 246 (127 BBIBP and 119 BNT booster) included in the final analysis. There was a significant increase in anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels post booster administration in both groups; however, the heterologous BNT arm demonstrated a significantly larger mean increase in the level of spike (S) antigen-specific antibodies (32.7-fold increase versus 2.6, p < 0.0001) and sVNT neutralising antibodies (3.4-fold increase versus 1.8, p < 0.0001), whereas the homologous arm demonstrated a significant increase in the levels of nucleocapsid (N) antigen-specific antibodies (3.8-fold increase versus none). Non-serious adverse events (injection site pain, fever, and fatigue) were more commonly reported in the heterologous arm, but no serious adverse events occurred. CONCLUSION: Heterologous prime-boost vaccination with the mRNA BNT162b2 (Pfizer) vaccine in those who had received two doses of inactivated virus BBIBP-CorV (Sinopharm) vaccine demonstrated a more robust immune response against SARS-CoV-2 than the homologous BBIBP booster and appears safe and well tolerated. BACKGROUND: Serum selenium levels have been associated with the incidence of heart failure (HF) and signs of the metabolic syndrome. In addition, notable differences have been reported between males and females in food intake and micronutrient metabolism, possibly explaining different health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to elucidate sex-specific, cross-sectional phenotypic differences in the association of serum selenium concentrations with parameters of metabolic syndrome and HF. METHODS: We investigated data from individuals from a community-based cohort (PREVEND; N = 4288) and heart failure cohort (BIOSTAT-CHF; N = 1994). In both populations, cross-sectional analyses were performed for potential interaction (p < 0.1) between sex and serum selenium with overlapping signs and clinical parameters of the metabolic syndrome and HF. RESULTS: Baseline selenium levels of the total cohort were similar between PREVEND (85.7 µg/L) and BIOSTAT-CHF (89.1 µg/L). Females with lower selenium levels had a higher BMI and increased prevalence of diabetes than females with higher selenium, in both PREVEND (pinteraction < 0.001; pinteraction = 0.040, resp.) and BIOSTAT-CHF (pinteraction = 0.021; pinteraction = 0.024, resp.), while opposite associations were observed for males. Additionally, in females, but not in males, lower selenium was associated with a higher prevalence of myocardial infarction (MI) in PREVEND (pinteraction = 0.021) and BIOSTAT-CHF (pinteraction = 0.084). CONCLUSION: Lower selenium was associated with a higher BMI and increased prevalence of diabetes in females, opposite to males, and was also associated with more MI in females. Interventional studies are needed to validate this observation.

Selenium is a trace element required for the active function of numerous enzymes and various physiological processes. In recent years, selenium nanoparticles draw the attention of scientists and researchers because of its multifaceted uses. The process involved in chemically synthesized SeNPs has been found to be hazardous in nature, which has paved the way for safe and ecofriendly SeNPs to be developed in order to achieve sustainability. In comparison to chemical synthesis, SeNPs can be synthesized more safely and with greater flexibility utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants. This review focused on the synthesis of SeNPs utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants; the mechanisms involved in SeNP synthesis; and the effect of various abiotic factors on SeNP synthesis and morphological characteristics. This article discusses the synergies of SeNP synthesis via biological routes, which can help future researchers to synthesize SeNPs with more precision and employ them in desired fields.

The dispersion of SARS-CoV-2 in aquatic environments via the discharge of domestic and hospital sewage has been confirmed in different locations. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible impacts of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposure to SARS-CoV-2 peptide fragments (PSPD-2001, 2002, and 2003) alone and combined with a mix of emerging pollutants. Our data did not reveal the induction of behavioral, biometric, or mutagenic changes. But we noticed an organ-dependent biochemical response. While nitric oxide and malondialdehyde production in the brain, gills, and muscle did not differ between groups, superoxide dismutase activity was reduced in the "PSPD", "Mix", and "Mix+PSPD" groups. An increase in catalase activity and a reduction in DPPH radical scavenging activity were observed in the brains of animals exposed to the treatments. However, the "Mix+PSPD" group had a higher IBRv2 value, with NO levels (brain), the reduction of acetylcholinesterase activity (muscles), and the DPPH radical scavenging activity (brain and muscles), the most discriminant factors for this group. The principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis indicated a clear separation of the "Mix+PSPD" group from the others. Thus, we conclude that exposure to viral fragments, associated with the mix of pollutants, induced more significant toxicity in zebrafish adults than in others.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS)-related abdominal pseudocyst (APC) is a rare cause of shunt malfunction. Variable VPS function due to APC has not been described before. A 21-year-old male with hydrocephalus and bilateral VPS presented with a right-sided shunt malfunction. After a routine abdominal ultrasound (US), that proved to be unremarkable, the patient had a clinical and radiological improvement followed by a relapse. An abdominal computed tomography scan subsequently showed an APC around the peritoneal catheter tip. Laparoscopic intervention on the APC cured the shunt malfunction. We believe that the APC emptied during the compression involved while performing the abdominal US. The pseudocyst collapse led to missing it on the abdominal US and explains the short-lived clinical and radiological improvement. We introduce the concept of APC-related variable VPS function, discuss the possible mechanisms by which the pseudocyst deflated, and make suggestions toward this diagnostic problem. Key Messages: A collapsible abdominal pseudocyst could result in a variable ventriculoperitoneal shunt function. Starting the abdominal ultrasound examination over the location of the peritoneal catheter tip may overcome the collapse. Contrasted computed tomography is superior to ultrasound in diagnosing the pseudocyst.

Alpha-amylase (α-amylase) is a key player in the management of diabetes and its related complications. This study was intended to have an insight into the binding of caffeic acid and coumaric acid with α-amylase and analyze the effect of these compounds on the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). Fluorescence quenching studies suggested that both the compounds showed an appreciable binding affinity towards α-amylase. The evaluation of thermodynamic parameters (ΔH and ΔS) suggested that the α-amylase-caffeic/coumaric acid complex formation is driven by van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding, and thus complexation process is seemingly specific. Moreover, glycation and oxidation studies were also performed to explore the multitarget to manage diabetes complications. Caffeic and coumaric acid both inhibited fructosamine content and AGE fluorescence, suggesting their role in the inhibition of early and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). However, the glycation inhibitory potential of caffeic acid was more in comparison to p-coumaric acid. This high antiglycative potential can be attributed to its additional -OH group and high antioxidant activity. There was a significant recovery of 84.5% in free thiol groups in the presence of caffeic acid, while coumaric attenuated the slow recovery of 29.4% of thiol groups. In vitro studies were further entrenched by in silico studies. Molecular docking studies revealed that caffeic acid formed six hydrogen bonds (Trp 59, Gln 63, Arg 195, Arg 195, Asp 197 and Asp 197) while coumaric acid formed four H-bonds with Trp 59, Gln 63, Arg 195 and Asp 300. Our studies highlighted the role of hydrogen bonding, and the ligands such as caffeic or coumaric acid could be exploited to design antidiabetic drugs.

Background and Aims: Peripheral neuropathy is a common diabetic complication. It is linked to poor glycaemic control and longer duration of diabetes. We explored the association between HbA1c and neuropathy risk considering the duration of diabetes in a sample of Saudi diabetic patients. Method: We conducted a monofilament test on 343 diabetic patients referred to our specialist diabetology centre in Saudi Arabia. We utilized a multiple generalized logistic regression model with a binary outcome related to neuropathy complications. Results: We found that over four out of every five patients have peripheral neuropathy. The interaction between HbA1c and duration was significant (estimate = -0.02802, P = 0.00534), a positive association between neuropathy and both HbA1c (increased risk by 46.2%, P = 0.03222) and DM duration (increased risk by 19.6%, P = 0.04497). Conclusions: The shorter the duration of diabetes, the more positive the relationship between HbA1c and peripheral neuropathy. In patients living for over 40 years with diabetes, HbA1c was higher among those who did not have peripheral neuropathy. It could be argued that this is an artefact of survival as poorer glycaemic control will likely result in higher mortality in earlier years of the diabetes career.

Aim: To determine the pattern and in-hospital mortality of thoracoabdominal injuries associated with head injuries (HI) due to motor vehicle accidents. Settings and Design. A single-center retrospective study in a tertiary care hospital, level 1 trauma center in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. Methods and Materials: Descriptive analysis was conducted to evaluate sex, age, types of head injury, associated thoracoabdominal injuries, particular admission day, duration of hospital stay, and discharge category, and associations between different variables and outcomes were analyzed. Results: The cohort had a mean age of 26.9 ± 15.8 years, with a predominance of men (86.9%). Thoracoabdominal injuries were present in 6.8% of MVA-related HI, and 14.3% of victims expired during their hospital stay, mostly within the first 10 days. All expired patients had posttraumatic brain lesions. Moreover, there was a significant association between intensive care unit (ICU) admission and poor prognosis. Conclusions: Existence of posttraumatic brain lesions and requirement of ICU admission are significant variables affecting outcomes in patients with motor vehicle-associated HI with concomitant thoracoabdominal trauma in this study. Patients who survived the first 10 days after trauma seemed to have a better prognosis. More efforts are needed to reduce the health burden of this lethal injury.

Objectives: This study aimed to provide information on the epidemiology, trend, associated traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) and non-spinal injuries, and risk factors affecting the in-hospital outcome of RTA-related traumatic spinal injury (TSI) over the past decade in Aseer province, Saudi Arabia. Methods: In this retrospective study, we included all RTA-related traumatic injuries (5797) admitted to ACH from 1st January 2010 to 31 December 2019, from which 810 cases were TSIs. The cases were identified through the hospital database registry.. Descriptive analysis was performed for gender, age, level of spinal injury, admission day, type of care unit, associated injuries, presence of TSCI and discharge category. Results: TSIs accounted for 13.97% of RTA-related injuries with a predominantly male population. The patients had a mean age of 30.7 years, 46.67 % of victims were between 19 to 30-years old. There was a significant decrease in the number of RTA-related TSIs over the study period. Lumbar and cervical injuries were more prevalent (32.47 and 31.36 %, respectively). Most (73.58 %) TSIs occurred during working days, and 6.54% required critical care admission. Associated non-spinal injuries occurred in 50.25% and TSCI in 6.91% of patients. The in-hospital mortality was 5.18%. The Age, level of spine injury, need for critical care, associated injuries, and TSCI significantly affected the likelihood of improvement. Conclusion: The latest government initiatives to reduce RTA like speed limits and waring of seat belts have resulted in a concordant decline in TSI incidence with good consistency between police and health registration data.

Background: COVID-19 was declared a public health emergency of global concern by the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 30, 2020. Vaccination is one of the most effective methods for halting the pandemic and preventing complications. Vaccine hesitancy is a possible threat to global public health. Understanding the key determinants that influence the community's preferences and demands for a future vaccine may aid in the development of strategies to improve the global vaccination program. The aim of this study was to assess the beliefs, barriers, and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination among Taif University students in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study, based study in Taif University, Saudi Arabia. Data was collected using a designed self-administered questionnaire that was shared as a link through social media. 332 students were considered eligible to participate voluntarily. Data were analyzed using the (SPSS) program version 25. Results: Out of 332 participants, 278 (83.7%) were accepting to take the covid vaccine, while 54 (16.3%) refused. Believes in vaccine safety and effectiveness and trust in the ability of the vaccine to prevent the complication, were all associated with high acceptance rate. Fear about side effects is considered a major factor for vaccination refusal. Conclusion: Most of the participants have the willingness to be vaccinated. The majority of students who agreed to take the vaccine were in the medical field, and that is mostly due to their high knowledge exposure. This indicates the importance of raising the awareness of the non-medical students.

Background: Diabetic emergencies are serious acute life-threatening complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). The Hajj season requires the health system in Saudi Arabia to prepare efficiently for the healthcare of millions of pilgrims, particularly for diabetic emergencies. Thus, diabetic emergencies need rapid recognition, diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to explore the frequency and associated factors of diabetic emergencies among the pilgrim's patients with DM during Hajj, Mecca 2019. Methods: This is a prospective study which was conducted on 153 patients with DM. They were selected from three major healthcare-providing facilities during Hajj, which are Arafat, Muzdelefah and Muna healthcare centres. The study was conducted from Aug 5 to 12, 2019. All the patients who presented with any of the hypoglycaemic or hyperglycaemic emergencies had their demographic and clinical characteristics recorded to estimate the prevalence of each emergency and identify its significant associated factors. Result: More than 90% of the study participants were patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while around 7% had type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS) and hypoglycaemia were presented in (n = 11, 7.2%), (n = 19, 12.4%) and (n = 28, 18%), respectively, of the participants. Moreover, the study found that "younger age" (odds = 30.4, P = 0.0115) and "type of medication" are significantly associated with DKA. Furthermore, "older age", "type of medication", "having Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)" and "diabetes duration" were found to have a significant association with HHS. Moreover, hypoglycaemia was associated with neuropathy complication (odds = 3.54948, P = 0.0187). Conclusions: Among the pilgrims with diabetes participating in Hajj, a considerable proportion with a range of diabetic emergencies present to the onsite medical facilities. Preparation is required in terms of logistics and health education about diabetic emergencies to meet the needs of pilgrims with DM, especially those who use insulin and have longstanding diabetes. Further research on DM and the creation of guidelines for health providers and patients with DM during Hajj are important focuses for the future.

The present work investigates on anodisation of aluminium in 1.0 M sodium oxalate and methodically evaluates the influence of zirconium silicate as an additive. The effect of additive upon structure, morphology, micro hardness and composition of the coating formed under various anodising conditions has been examined comprehensively. The surface of the coating was modified by stearic acid and its immersion time was optimized. The dependence of surface morphology, kinetic parameters, and microstructural characteristics of the coating on electrolyte /additive concentration, anodising time, and the temperature has also been inspected. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with EDAX studies indicates the beneficial role of zirconium silicate towards the formation of crystalline coating with improved corrosion-resistant characteristics. The static water contact angle on the surface-modified coatings was 122° ± 0.4°. This contact angle of super hydrophobic coating has been improved by KOH treatment (152.76o ± 0.4°) which is obtained under optimized conditions exhibit the corrosion resistance (1.68 × 108 Ω cm-1)which is nearly 8 times higher than that of bare aluminium (8.36 × 101 Ω cm-1). The efficacies of the surface-modified coatings against bacteria that are commonly encountered in marine (Desulfovibrio desulfuricans) and medical applications (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) are also demonstrated.

Thidiazuron (TDZ) is an active substituted phenyl urea compound that has found a significant role as a plant growth regulator. The most exciting aspect of its function is that it can mimic auxins and cytokinin but is chemically different from these two. Many theories have been put forward, and experiments performed to understand the mode of action of TDZ in callogenesis. One suggested mechanism presents that it works by inhibiting the cytokinin degrading enzymes that compete with cytokinin for an active site on the enzyme. An example is the TDZ-induced suppressed expression of gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis genes encoding GA3 and GA20 oxidases. This is entailed with a slightly increased expression of GA catabolism genes encoding GA20 oxidase. Similarly, one of the recommendations is that TDZ induces the expression of specific genes and transcription regulatory sequences that are either responsible directly for callus formation or in turn induce other auxins or cytokinin for callogenesis. There is no concise review available that discusses the details of TDZ-induced callus, specifically and other in vitro cultures in general. This review is an attempt to explore all these pathways and mechanisms involved in callogenesis in plants stimulated by TDZ.
